Saturday’s Florida state 6A final could not have started much better for No. 24 Armwood (Seffner, Fla.)

The Hawks stopped Miami Central on fourth down on a game-opening 15-play drive and then scored on a 90-yard touchdown run by Erin Collins. Yards away from another score on its next possession, Armwood fumbled and Allen Jones went 90 yards for a Miami Central TD for a 7-6 lead.

Thanks to a series of Armwood miscues, special teams struggles and a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Miami Central was up 29-6 at halftime on its way to a 48-13 victory and its fourth consecutive state title.

Armwood (15-1) had not allowed more than 20 points in a game this season, but Miami Central had that total by the second quarter.

The Rockets (12-2) were ranked in the top 5 in the Super 25 preseason but lost 38-14 to DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) in a nationally televised season opener. After four straight wins, Miami Central suffered an 8-7 loss to Carol City. But from there, the Rockets ran the table, including beating Armwood in the state final for the third consecutive year.

Freshman James Cook ran for three touchdowns and Jerrod Thomas threw two touchdown passes in the victory.  Cook, the brother of Florida State running back Dalvin Cook, finished with 178 yards on 15 carries.

Thomas completed 13 of 19 passes for 156 yards and threw TD passes to Carmoni Green and Darnell Salomon for Miami Central, which gained 461 yards and recovered three Armwood fumbles.

Colins ran for 141 yards and caught a 33-yard pass for Armwood.

No. 2 Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.) became the first team in the state in more than a decade to post consecutive perfect seasons as the Packers repeated as AAAAAA champions with a 30-13 win against No. 15 Roswell on Saturday.

The Packers won their 30^th consecutive game and in the process broke their state scoring record for the highest classification with 700 points. Colquitt County scored 687 points last year.

With the win, Colquitt County (15-0) could lay claim to being the Super 25 national champion. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) has been No. 1 for most of the season and finished with a seventh consecutive Nevada Division I title.

Colquitt County quarterback Chase Parrish threw his 40^th touchdown of the season and 70^th of his career in the second quarter and kept Colquitt’s offense on track after spending Wednesday in the hospital with a viral infection.

Roswell (14-1) took the lead on the first series when Quintarius Neely found A.J. Smith down the sideline with an 8-1yard TD. That combination also was responsible for the game-winning TD pass in the final minute of a semifinal win against Grayson.

Colquitt County answered with a pair of Keil Pollard 1-yard runs in the next six minutes for a 14-7 lead with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Ty Lee caught a 17-yard TD pass to give Colquitt a 21-10 lead with 6:05 remaining and Roswell’s Turner Barckhoff added another field goal to cut the margin to 21-13 at halftime.

But three second-half field goals by Luis Martinez pushed the margin to 30-13 to close the scoring and secure the state title.

Among the more touching moments of the weekend at the Florida state football finals in Orlando was this dash by Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) star linebacker Devin Bush Jr. to embrace his father and coach, Devin Sr.

Flanagan won its first state title in school history, taking the 8A crown with a 26-7 victory against Osceola.

Flanagan — known as the “Dirty Birds” for its style of defense — locked down an Osceola rushing attack that had amassed more than 5,000 yards this season after allowing 100 yards rushing in the first quarter. The Falcons committed two first-half turnovers, but hung in and established its dominance in the second half.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Bush Sr. told the Sun-Sentinel. “I love these boys. I love them.”

For father and son, it was a special moment. Devin Jr. is an Under Armour All-American linebacker and is scheduled to make his college choice this week. He told Scout.com after the state title game that he had made a decision.

Florida State sent its defensive coordinator and linebackers coach to watch the game and head coach Jimbo Fisher, along with three defensive assistants, have an in-home visit scheduled for Sunday. He has been down to Florida State, Michigan, Georgia and Auburn.

Bush Sr., of course, was a member of a national title team with the Seminoles before an NFL career that included a Super Bowl ring.

For father and son, though, few moments like will eclipse the embrace captured in the video above by the Miami Herald.

Athletic plays by Huntington Prep star and Michigan State signee Miles Bridges are nothing new, so we’ll add this one to the collection.

Bridges makes his move in transition at the end of the first half in the final of the Big E Classic in Proctorville, Ohio.

Huntington Prep, ranked No. 21 in the Super 25, beat New Faith Christian (Ga.), 95-62, with Bridges being named the MVP.

Huntington next takes part in the Chick-fil-A Classic in South Carolina later this week.

As captured by D1Bound.com, wide receiver Devaughn Vele of Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) makes an amazing one-handed catch in a 31-30 victory against Oak Hills (Hesperia) in a CIF Division III-A regional playoff game.

Rancho Bernardo (12-2) advances to Atherton Sacred Heart Prep next week in a state bowl game.

According to D1Bound, Vele has a 3.93 grade point average and has no  college scholarship offers.

With the Minnesota Vikings having played Thursday, Vikings wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson was able to get back to his native South Carolina to see his high school, Northwestern (Rock Hill), win the 4A Division II state title.

Northwestern (14-1) dominated Lexington for a 63-13 victory and its third state title since 2010.

Gage Moloney threw five touchdowns and ran for another in the victory.

Patterson caught 75 passes for 944 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior in 2008 to help Northwestern to the state title game. He also was named all-state. Patterson also played basketball and ran track at Northwestern. He spent 2009 at North Carolina Tech but did not play football before he became a two-time All-American at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.

He then went to Tennessee and was selected in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

If you didn’t know that five-star quarterback Jacob Eason was in Athens, Ga., over the weekend for a visit with new coach Kirby Smart and a number of other recruits, all you had to do was check out social media.

Between Twitter and Instagram, there were plenty of images and some video from either fans or other members of the recruiting class. A fan captured Eason throwing spirals in the school bookstore after getting the ball snapped to him by offensive line recruit Ben Cleveland.

“They were really good guys and Ben Cleveland was snapping the ball to Jacob in the bookstore and playing around and you could tell they were enjoying the visit,” Nick Hulfeld, a high school senior from Florida who was visiting campus, told DawgNation.com.

Among Smart’s highest recruiting priorities is to make sure Eason, from Lake Stevens, Wash., doesn’t change his mind. Eason had a close relationship with Mark Richt, now the Miami coach, and he has taken visits to Florida and Washington since the coaching change.

The tally of undefeated 11-man football teams continued to dwindle. Thirty more teams suffered their first loss last weekend and the number is at 150.

The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) has become the 12th high school athletic association to endorse USA Football’s Heads Up Football program.

The MHSAA is recommending that all 250 of its football-playing member schools utilize Heads Up Football, a program that is used by more than 1,100 high schools nationwide.

Mississippi joins Alaska, Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Oregon, Vermont and Washington in the endorsement of Heads Up Football.

The Heads Up program is a comprehensive approach to teach and play football that “teaches tackling and blocking techniques designed to reduce helmet contact while addressing all-sport-relevant topics with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response; sudden cardiac arrest protocols; hydration and heat preparedness; and instruction on proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.”

“Our state association and member schools continue to emphasize the importance of coaching and teaching proper techniques and skills that are necessary to maximize safe play and minimize all risks involved by students participating in contact sports,” MHSAA Executive Director Don Hinton said in a statement. “Through revolutionary and unique teaching methods, Heads Up Football provides continuing education to our coaches that increases the awareness of important standards for participation in order to properly play the game and ensure the safety of all participants.”

Each high school designates a Player Safety Coach, who is trained to direct and monitor the implementation of the program and lead training for coaches, parents and players. The coaches attend USA Football clinics through the spring and summer to learn the protocols. Coaches enrolled in the program complete an online certification course from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and USA Football.

Under Armour All-American defensive end Patrick Bethel committed to the University of Miami on Monday, the second commitment for new coach Mark Richt.

Bethel from Vero Beach, Fla., announced his commitment on Twitter. He is expected to graduate early from high school and enroll at Miami following the Jan. 2 Under Armour game.

Bethel’s father, Randy, was a tight end at Miami from 1987-90.

According to 247Sports, Bethel is a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 10 strong side defensive end in the nation.

He joins Santaluces (Lantana, Fla.) linebacker Zach McCloud, who recommitted to Miami after decommitting in November.

Meanwhile, 2017 tight end Tre’ McKitty decommitted from Miami. McKitty, a Tampa native who played this season at IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), is ranked as the No. 9 tight end in his class, according to 247Sports.

In advance of the Texas 6A-II final, Katy has stormed from No. 14 to No. 5 in the Super 25 Computer football rankings.

Katy moved to the title game with a 38-0 victory against Steele (Cibolo), its 10th shutout of the season, and now faces Lake Travis, ranked No. 6 by the Super 25 Computer. Lake Travis was No. 7 last week.

None of the top four teams played last week, but it will be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown when De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) faces No. 2 Centennial in the CIF Open Division Bowl.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) remains at No. 3 and Nevada Division I state champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) is No. 4.

After Katy and Lake Travis, the Midwest dominates the next four spots with No. 7 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), No. 8 Male (Louisville), No. 9 Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio), No. 10 Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.) and No. 11 Colerain (Cincinnati).

Mission Viejo (Calif.), which was No. 20 last week, moved to No. 12 and faces Bellarmine (San Jose) in the Division I-AA state bowl. Bellarmine ended Folsom’s unbeaten season.

On the day he was hired as South Carolina coach, Will Muschamp and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott went to Conway, S.C., to visit four-star wide receiver Bryan Edwards.

The attention paid off as Edwards announced Tuesday that he was again committing to the Gamecocks and becomes the first commitment of the Muschamp era.

Edwards, an Army All-American, committed to South Carolina in late March and then reopened his recruitment in mid-November. At the time, he said he wanted to take another look at Clemson, although the Tigers staff was looking at him as a safety.

Edwards, at 6-3 and 208 pounds, is ranked as the No. 3 player in the state and No. 44 nationally at wide receiver, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Edwards’ commitment follows an official visit to campus last weekend.

“South Carolina is the place where I fit best,” Edwards told 247Sports.com. “Columbia is the place for me.”

Five-star IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) quarterback Shea Patterson is not changing his mind on his commitment to join the Rebels, according to his father Steve.

Patterson sent a tweet late Monday night that set off alarm bells for some. All it said was “Decisions … ”

It was quickly liked and retweeted and there were comments from concerned Ole Miss fans.

His father said there is no surprise announcement.

Patterson graduates from IMG on Tuesday and then is planning to head home to Biloxi, Miss., for a few weeks before going to San Antonio from the U.S. Army All-American Game.

He will then enroll and start classes in Oxford before spring practice begins.

The program includes more than wins and losses. Regional voting begins Wednesday at noon ET and encompasses 175 active public or private high school football programs that were placed into five (5) regions, 35 schools per region. The regions are based on the Super 25 Regional Computer Rankings (Pacific, Midwest, Frontier, Northeast and South).

The 35 teams were selected based on their standing in the Super 25 Regional Computer Rankings as of Nov. 30. Top teams move to the national round.

Spread the word and get voting to see who will win the prizes and the distinction of Best Football Program for 2015.

A Pittsburgh high school has suspended its boys basketball coach for allegedly verbally abusing his team during a game last Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Ron Richards was suspended by Plum High after a parent claimed Richards verbally abused the team during a game against Woodlands Hills. Plum athletic director Bob Alpino told the Post-Gazette that Richards is suspended “temporarily” and declined further comment saying it was a “personnel matter.”

Richards has a record of 233-141 in 16 seasons at Plum over two stints. He is in his seventh year of his second run.

Four-star Under Armour All-American wide receiver N’Keal Harry is 6-4, 210 pounds and obviously strong.

Just ask the rim and backboard that the Chandler (Ariz.) senior destroyed in a basketball game.

Harry is planning to attend Arizona State for football.

The game was suspended with Chandler leading 62-47 and 1:17 left to play. Given the score, Chandler has been awarded the win rather than playing the last 77 seconds.
