QB Jake Fromm officially a Georgia Bulldog and Army All-American

Wednesday was a day for ceremony and celebration for Jake Fromm at Houston County in Warner Robins, Ga.

In the morning, Fromm publicly signed his financial aid agreement to attend the University of Georgia. Because the senior quarterback plans to enroll in January, the school would not be able to have a ceremony for him on National Signing Day in February.

In the afternoon, he accepted his honorary jersey for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

“I come from a military-based town with a lot of pride in our military,” he told USA TODAY High School Sports. “Playing in this game is something I don’t take lightly.

“I remember in my freshman year in high school and watching the Army Bowl on TV. It’s an incredible experience and really a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to play in it and I’m excited to be getting the chance.”

While Fromm will end his high school career in San Antonio on Jan. 7, he isn’t ready to stop playing with his Houston County teammates. That means, the team must beat Valdosta this week. A loss and Houston County doesn’t make the playoffs in a stacked region in Georgia’s AAAAAA classification.

Houston County was the top-ranked team in the state and then suffered back-to-back losses to Lee County and Coffee County, but bounced back with a victory last week against Northside. Fromm accounted for 652 yards in that game – 530 passing with four touchdowns and 122 rushing with another TD.

“They are really good football team,” Fromm said of Valdosta. “If we don’t win it, we don’t go to the playoffs so it’s all hands on my deck. This could be my last high school football game and I’m not ready for it to end. I’m going in full force and ready to go.”

Thanks to his performance against Northside, Fromm is now potentially in reach of Clemson star Deshaun Watson’s state record of 13,077 career passing yards. He is 431 yards away and would accomplish the feat in 10 fewer games than Watson did at Gainesville High.

But the math says this: If Houston County wins against Valdosta, he’ll have another game and seems almost certain to get the record.

“It’s a big deal,” Fromm said, “but I don’t put any individual awards or accolades before my team. I don’t care how many yards I throw for. If we don’t win our next football game, (the record) is not going to mean a lot for me. I want to win a state championship really bad and this is my last year to do that.”

Record or not, Fromm’s career numbers jump off the page: 12,647 yards, 114 touchdowns, 61 percent completion rate. He is ranked as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the class by 247Sports and the No. 5 player overall in the state of Georgia.

And he will remain at home for college football. Fromm flipped from Alabama in March and has been steadfast in his commitment to the Bulldogs and is among the most diligent commits in trying to recruit other players.

Truth be told, the signing ceremony Wednesday was more for show. He has already signed his financial aid papers before the season started.

“It was good to get it out of the way (before the season) and I’m very thankful for it,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I still go out and play football. I never went into any football game to hold anything back or not wanting to get hurt. As far as how I play and the way I play, (signing the papers) didn’t have any effect.”

The papers bind Georgia to Fromm, but not Fromm to Georgia. Still, there is no indication he plans to change his mind.

Fromm said once he gave his commitment to the Georgia staff, “that was the end of it.”

“I’m a Georgia Bulldog,” he said. “At end of the day, that’s what I wanted to be and that’s always what I wanted to be. I’m just excited to be Georgia Bulldog.”

With the early signing period for basketball recruits in the Class of 2017 set to begin Wednesday, USA TODAY Sports has compiled its annual Composite Team Rankings.

The composite looks at the rankings from 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout and averages them to determine where each team stands. Teams that were unranked by 247, Rivals and Scout received a 26 — one spot lower than the top 25. Teams unranked by ESPN received an 11; ESPN has only released a top 10 leading into the signing period.

What you don’t see here are the names Duke or Kentucky. Both figure to be high in these rankings by the time their classes are finished, but Duke has one commitment and Kentucky has none at this point. Duke got a commitment from Alex O’Connell from Milton (Ga.), ranked as the No. 23 shooting guard by ESPN.

Massive Texas guard Jack Anderson receives Under Armour All-America jersey

0

Jack Anderson is one of the highest-ranked Texas Tech commits in some time.

The massive offensive guard is ranked No. 3 at his position, No. 8 in Texas overall and No. 42 in the nation so it was big news when he made his decision in mid-October.

Anderson remains in his home state after picking the Red Raiders over offers from Alabama, Florida State, LSU and in-state rivals Texas and Texas A&M.

But before he gets to Lubbock, Anderson will represent Frisco High at the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando on Jan. 1.

Anderson received his honorary jersey Friday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school for a ceremony with family, friends and teammates.

Versatile Markquese Bell eager for Under Armour All-America Game

0
0

Where hasn’t Markquese Bell lined up for Bridgeton (N.J.)? He has played safety, corner, wide receiver, punter, placekicker.

That versatility and athleticism — and notably his ability at safety — have made Bell an Under Armour All-American.

He received his honorary jersey Friday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school for a ceremony attended by family, friends and classmates.

“I really don’t care where I play,” he says. “But certain schools have me on defense and certain schools say I could possibly go both ways,” Bell said. “To me, I don’t think you can really play both ways. You can have certain plays and stuff, but I think I would be more effective on defense. To everybody that wants to know, I think I’ll play defense in college.

“I just like to hit people. That’s the one position where I can do it without getting in trouble. It’s just all about coming down and hitting somebody.”

Bell, who volunteered to play safety during The Nike Opening Finals in July, is ranked as the No. 4 athlete, No. 95 player overall and No. 1 player in New Jersey by ESPN, which will broadcast the Under Armour game from Orlando on Jan. 1.

“The aspect of the game I’m looking forward to the most is getting to hang out with all the talent because it’s not something you get to do every day,” he said.

By then, Bell will have made his college choice. He plans to announce Dec. 1.

Bell was the focus of attention for many schools over the summer, but narrowed the list from 13 to seven. He has taken official visits this fall to Maryland, Michigan, Florida and Rutgers and plans to visit Ohio State for the Michigan game in late November.

“It’s been good, it’s been bad. It’s had its ups and downs,” Bell said of the recruiting process. “It’s been a lot of stress, so when I do commit, it’ll be a lot of stress off me. I won’t have to worry about where I’m going next and who I got to talk to.”

He will make his selection in order to enroll early in college, but he will be back at Bridgeton at least one more time this spring.

“Before I thought about anything about enrolling early, I had to make sure that I could come back for graduation so my grandma can see me graduate,” Bell said. “She’s been through so much to put me through school and everything. She tried her best, so she has to see me graduate.

“There’s a chance I could possibly play early if I do early enroll. I feel like if I come in early and I show them what I can do and they can work with me a little bit more, then I think I have the potential to play early.”

JT Daniels puts on another show as No. 3 Mater Dei (Calif.) moves to 10-0

No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) closed a perfect regular season with a 59-7 victory against JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) on Friday night.

Mater Dei moves to 10-0 for the first time since 1997 and figures to be the No. 1 seed in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. The Monarchs (10-0) led 28-7 after the first quarter and 52-7 at halftime.

Monarchs quarterback J.T. Daniels played into the third quarter and came out with 458 yards and six touchdowns on 24-for-38 passing. H also has now eclipsed 3,500 passing yards on the season.

Amazingly, that is the seventh time in 10 games that Daniels — only a sophomore — has had at least six TD passes in game and the 10th time in his career that he has had five or more.

Daniels has 53 touchdowns on the season, second in California state history.

Osiris St. Brown had two touchdown catches.

No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Nev.) runs in-state win streak to 82 games

No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) finished another perfect regular season — this time with an 11-0 mark — in a 56-7 victory against Sierra Vista.

The Gaels ran their winning streak to 50 games overall and 82 against Nevada opponents, and open the postseason next week in pursuit of an eighth consecutive state title. Gorman hosts Palo Verde in the Sunset Regional quarterfinals next week.

Tate Martell had four passing touchdowns and Biaggio Ali-Walsh ran for three rushing TDs. Austin Arnold had a rushing and receiving score.

After Gorman’s last three opponents failed to score, Sierra Vista at least found the end zone once. Since its triple-overtime thriller against St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Gorman has outscored its last five opponents by a whopping 310-20.

Gorman rolled to a 42-0 lead at halftime, the same halftime score as in last week’s 56-0 victory against Durango.

Sierra Vista’s fans opted for the Mannequin Challenge at some point during the game.

Newberg entered the playoffs as the No. 30 seed in Oregon and needed to travel more than 250 miles to South Medford for Friday’s first-round playoff game. The bus ride home, though, had to be fun.

Anthony Adams, who has played quarterback at times for Newberg, lined up a receiver on a fourth-and-20 play with less than a minute left. And only managed to catch a pass from Garrett Myers and go 90 yards for the score and the 26-23 upset.

The win was Newberg’s first playoff victory in 16 years.
