Kevin Knox from Tampa Catholic scored 30 points in all sorts of spectacular ways during the Tampa Catholic’s preseason game against St. Petersburg (Fla.) in the St. Petersburg High Tip Off.

Knox played only about two quarters because he was on the bench with foul trouble.

Knox, a 6-8 forward, averaged 30.1 points and 11.2 rebounds last season for the Crusaders and has been named to the 2016-17 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Boys Basketball Team.

Knox is ranked No. 7 in the ESPN100.

Belen Jesuit (Miami) will begin atop the USA TODAY Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Preseason Super 25 for winter boys soccer. The preseason rankings were released Tuesday.

Belen Jesuit went 27-0-2 last season and won the Florida Class 4A title, the first in school history.

Belen Jesuit finished No. 7 in the final Super 25 last winter.

Coach Tanger Mendonca returns several key players, but must replace senior captain Francisco de la Camara, who finished his season with 59 goals, two short of the Miami-Dade County scoring record.

Seven states play winter soccer (in alphabetical order): Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Voting was done prior to teams beginning play within the last week in several states. As has been the case in the past, the national rankings include 10 teams.

Loyola (Los Angeles), which finished No. 4 last winter with a 28-4-0 season, is No. 2 in the preseason and looks to successfully defend its CIF Southern California Regional title.

Coppell, which was No. 2 last season with a 24-0-2 record, is No. 3 in the preseason.

St. Paul’s School (Covington, La.) comes in at No. 4 after a season in which its lost only once — to eventual Super 25 winter national champion Montverde Academy (Fla.).

Ponte Vedra Beach (Fla.), which was 25-0 last season, is No. 5.

Defending Super 25 champion Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) will begin this winter as the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association Preseason Super 25 for winter girls soccer.

Santa Margarita was 25-4 last season and ended the season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Tesoro in the CIF Southern California Regional Division I final.

The team returns several key players, especially on the back line, led by junior Notre Dame commit Chloe Boice, junior Emma Leong and sophomore Madison Curry, who scored twice in the title game and the game-winner in the semifinals.

Seven states play winter soccer (in alphabetical order): Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Mount Carmel Academy (New Orleans) is No. 4 after a 21-1-7 season and top 10 ranking last winter. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) rounds out the top 5 after finishing out of the rankings a year ago.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) averages nearly 40 points per game with star players all over the field on offense and is ranked No. 9 in the Super 25.

Wide receiver Michael Harley is among the big playmakers, averaging 13 yards per catch, and he will end his high school career at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Harley received his honorary jersey Tuesday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school. He was honored in front of family, friends and teammates in a ceremony at the school.

Harley, a three-star recruit, shows speed and agility and can create space to get open.

He committed to West Virginia in June, but could end staying closer to home. He received an offer from Miami less than two weeks ago and plans to take an official visit in January.

The Army Bowl is Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

Four-star wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon will join his IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) quarterback and roommate Kellen Mond at Texas A&M.

Ausbon flipped his commitment from LSU to the Aggies on Tuesday night, days before the two schools are set to play. He announced the decision on Twitter with a video to the tune of “I’m Coming Home.”

Before transferring to IMG for his senior year, Ausbon played in his hometown of Houston, for St. Thomas as a freshman and Episcopal as a sophomore and junior.

He becomes the second player to decommit from LSU since the firing of Les Miles. The other was junior college wide receiver Stephen Guidry

Ausbon had 18 catches for 399 yards and five touchdowns for the Ascenders, who finished 11-0, their second consecutive unbeaten season.

He is ranked as the No. 11 wide receiver and No. 74 player overall by the 247Sports Composite.

He will report to College Station after playing in the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 1 in Orlando.

Sue Cannon, the legendary Texas girls basketball coach, won her 1,100th game Tuesday night as Euless Trinity beat Home School Athletic Association (HSAA) 56-28, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Cannon pushed her overall career record to 1,100-348 and 722-270 at Trinity, which is already 11-0 this season.

According to the National Federation record book, the winningest girls basketball coach is Leta Andrews at 1,416 victories. She retired from Granbury (Texas) in 2014.

The active wins leader is also from Texas. Joe Lombard is No. 2 overall with 1,261 entering this season, according to the Amarillo Globe-News. Lombard, whose teams have won the last three state 5A titles, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame last June.

Mother McAuley (Chicago) entered this girls volleyball season with the high expectations that always come with a program that had won 14 previous Illinois state titles but a roster with less experience on the big stage.

But the Mighty Macs are on the big stage now after thriving against a national schedule to finish as the champion in the inaugural USA TODAY Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Super 25.

While the final Super 25 won’t be released until after the CIF state championships in California is held Dec. 4, the determination has been made that No. 2 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) would not pass Mother McAuley even with a victory.

McAuley finished 40-1 with 32 consecutive victories to end the season and won the Illinois 4A title.

The Mighty Macs won the 2013 state title, their second in a span of 12 years after winning two state titles between 2000 and 2010.

“Last year we had lost in the playoffs, and coming into this season, we talked a lot about not riding the emotional roller coaster,” coach Jen DeJarld said. “We talked about how the mental part of our game had to be different.

“We worked a lot on learning how to be poised under pressure and not get emotional when good things happen or when bad things happen and not to feed into the praise or the criticism. We wanted a steady balance. That was the goal of the entire season.

“Playing in those big matches when everything was on the line, that’s where we pulled through.”

The examples of that determination are many.

• Take the Louisville Invitational in early September. Coming off what would be their only loss of the season to St. Joseph’s Academy (St. Louis), the Mighty Macs were trailing Mercy (Ky.) and down 17-11 in the third game and pulled out a 25-23 win. “That was a turning point for us,” DeJarld said. “We always found a way to win.”

• Or beating nationally ranked Assumption (Louisville) in Chicago and then beating Assumption again 2-1 in the Asics Challenge after losing the first game. “We had split a lot of times, but we had never beaten them twice (in that situation) in the 30-year history of the tournament,” she said. “That’s another point when we were peaking.”

• Or the Class 4A Hinsdale South Supersectional against Geneva that ended in a dramatic 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 victory. McAuley trailed 11-4 in each game. In the third game, it fell behind 11-4 and then 19-4 before winning. “That was a pretty incredible win against a high-caliber team,” she said. ‘Their front line is 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.”

• Or the state final against Minooka in which the teams split the first two games. McAuley came from behind to win the third game 25-19. The three games had identical 25-19 scores. “That was another really talented team and again we were down and again we rallied back,” she said. “Honestly, our strength of schedule and playing such good matches all season helped pull us through in Game 3s all year.”

The team was led by senior Notre Dame signee Charley Niego; seniors Katie O’Connell and Abby O’Brien, who are heading to Ferris State in Michigan; senior Emma Reilly (Appalachian State); senior Ashley Maher (Lipscomb); and sophomore setter Nancy Kane.

“This is a group where a lot of them had never won a championship in their lives in anything and had not had a lot of success with teams they had been on, either club teams or grammar school teams,” DeJarld said. “They didn’t have a lot of that type of experience, but they really made it their mission to win a state championship. For this team to be able to do that was quite an accomplishment.”

Santa Margarita, which moved up a spot in the Super 25, is the No. 1 seed in the eight-team Open Division and faces Santa Fe Christian in the final four on Saturday. The winner meets the winner of Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) and St. Ignatius (San Francisco) on Dec. 3.

Nebraska Class B state champion Skutt Catholic (Omaha) is No. 3 followed by Kentucky state champion Sacred Heart (Louisville) and Corona del Sol (Tempe), the Arizona state champion, is No. 5.

Hebron (Texas) is the biggest mover after repeating as UIL 6A state champions and knocking off then-No. 1 Oak Ridge (Conroe) in the semifinals and Clear Creek (League City) in the final. Oak Ridge had been unbeaten.

Hebron moves from No. 24 to No. 9. Clear Creek enters the rankings at No. 10. Oak Ridge fell to No. 11.

Calabasas (Calif.) football hasn’t lost this season, and a big reason why has been the play of Brendan Radley-Hiles.

The junior has received a ton of national attention, gaining interest from the likes of Nebraska, Notre Dame, Alabama, UCLA, and others.

Radley-Hiles, a cornerback, also makes plays on the offensive side of the ball, as you can see below in the video courtesy of #D1Bound.

Before she was a three-time Olympic gold medalist as a goalkeeper, Hope Solo was a two-time Parade All-American as a forward at Richland High in Washington state.

She scored 109 goals in her prep career, including two in the state championship game in 1999. Richland went undefeated that season and was ranked in the top five in the nation.

Solo was back in her hometown for Thanksgiving and was honored by her favorite hometown restaurant, Sterling’s, with a photograph on the wall. She is shown waving the American flag after the U.S. team beat Japan 2-1 to win the gold medal at the London Olympics.

In case you are wondering, Solo was a goalkeeper as a teen for her club program, Three Rivers Soccer, and also was in goal for the U.S. Soccer U18 team at the Pan Am Games with shutouts in the semifinal and gold medal match.

Quarterback Beau English from No. 6 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) has been voted the Super 25 Top Star for games of Nov. 17-19 by readers of USA TODAY High School Sports.

English, an Air Force commit, had four passing touchdowns and a rushing TD as the Stags rallied to beat St. John’s (Washington, D.C.), 34-29, to win its fourth consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title

English had three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 17-yard run that proved to be the game-winner.

Fordham Prep edged Xavier Prep 21-18 on Thanksgiving in New York’s oldest sports rivalry, with official results dating back to 1906. It was Fordham’s first win in the series since 2001, according to news12varsity.com.

In the 93rd edition of the Turkey Bowl between the teams, Fordham Prep quarterback Matt Valecce threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final minutes. With his three TDs, Valece moved into 10th place on the New York state career touchdown list.

Xavier had an 18-13 lead and had a chance to push the margin to eight points with 3:32 remaining, but missed a 34-yard field goal.

Fordham took over and its own 20 on a march for the winning drive. The first play was a hook-and-lateral that went for 42 yards from Valecce to Thomas Natkin to Will Loffredo. Five plays later, Valecce threw a 30-yard TD pass to Liam McHale for the 19-18 lead and then Valecce converted the two-point conversion on a run for the final margin.

Loffredo had in 10 catches for 151 yards and two scores.

As noted by our friends at For The Win, Lynn (Mass.) English threw a touchdown pass with eight seconds to go and completed a two-point conversion to take a 20-15 lead against annual Thanksgiving Day rival Lynn Classical.

Classical’s Melvin Nieves took the kick, and after a series of laterals, the ball got into the hands of Marcus Rivera. He went down the right sideline and got a block from Chase Buono.

The play covered 83 yards for an amazing 21-20 victory.

Briarwood Christian (Ala.) sophomore running back J.R. Tran-Reno found the end zone the hard way, leaping over a defender for this 12-yard TD run in a 15-0 victory against Mortimer Jordan (Morris).

Briarwood advances to face Wenonah on Friday in the state 5A semifinals.
