K.J. Jarrell, a four-star recruit from No. 19 Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.), was presented with his honorary U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey Tuesday.

Jarrell was honored during a ceremony at his school as part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance.

One of the top players in Arizona, Jarrell named his top three of Arizona State, Cal, and USC last month.

He plans to visit all three schools starting next month, but he did indicate the in-state Sun Devils may start with a bit of a leg up.

“I’d say ASU definitely still sticks out,” Jarrell told 247Sports last month. “I’m just waiting to see how everything goes on my officials. I have to do what’s best for myself. It’s got to feel right. I know when it will feel right.”

We know the five Heisman finalists are the best players in college football, but what were they like back in high school?

Well, they were pretty good then, too. Jabrill Peppers, for instance, was the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Defensive Player of the Year his senior year at Paramus (N.J.) Catholic.

Deshaun Watson at Gainesville (Ga.), Lamar Jackson at Boynton Beach (Fla.) Community, Baker Mayfield at Lake Travis (Austin, Texas), and Dede Westbrook at Cameron (Texas) Yoe were quite impressive, as well.

Check out their highlights from their prep days below, courtesy of Hudl.

5 things to watch at Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals

Forty of the top boys and 40 of the top girls cross country runners in the nation compete Saturday at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego.

A live stream broadcast is available starting at 11 a.m. ET on YouTube or via http://footlockercc.com/nationals.shtml. The girls race begins at 12:15 p.m. ET with the boys race at 1 p.m.

Here are 5 things to watch:

Nevada Mareno, the South Region winner, is among the clear favorites in the girls race (Photo: KevinMorris@PhotoRun)

Nevada Mareno returns

The Stanford commit from Raleigh, N.C., is the top returning female after placing third last year at Nationals. Mareno comes in off an impressive victory in the competitive South Regional, where she pulled away after the first mile and was not challenged from there. She again dominated the state championship race in North Carolina, winning by 16 seconds after blowing away the field by 44 seconds in 2015.

Mareno has acknowledged that she has missed a lot of training this season because of college visits and also because her motivation has sagged a bit after being so dominant last year, but said the prospect of a national title has given her a boost.

Mareno’s biggest competition could be Claudia Lane, a sophomore from Malibu, Calif., who won the state Division 4 title.

Five other finishers from last year’s girls field are in the race: 20th-place finisher Jordan Oakes from Seattle; No. 27 Maria Coffin from Annapolis, Md.; No. 31

Kate Hunter from Provo, Utah; No. 33 Kayla Young from Denver; and No. 36 Julia Heymach from Houston.

Olympic moms

Two runners are the sons of mothers who competed in the Olympics. Patrick O’Brien, who placed third in the Northeast Regional, is the son of Cathy Schiro O’Brien, who ran the Olympic marathon in Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992. She finished 10th in Barcelona and was the top American. As a high schooler at Dover High, she won five state titles and won the Foot Locker Nationals. Her time of 16:46 at the 1984 Foot Locker Northeast race is still a course record; her son qualified for nationals over the same famed course at Van Cortlandt Park in New York.

Gabe Fendel, who placed third in the Midwest Regional, is the son of Solange Fendel. The former Solange de Souza ran the women’s marathon for her native Brazil at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. His father, David, was the runner-up in 1991 in the Indiana state cross country championships.

The Next Meb Keflezighi

Amir Ado’s compelling story of leaving a war-torn country and excelling as a runner in similar to that of Meb Keflezigi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist and 2009 New York Marathon winner. Ado and his family left Benghazi in 2012 and spent two years in a refugee camps before Amir, his six siblings and parents were relocated to Spokane, Wash. Ado was a soccer player but eventually took up cross country before his junior year at Ferris High. He placed third in the West Regional to qualify for nationals.

By state

California and Pennsylvania each has seven runners in the field followed by six apiece from Illinois, Michigan, Texas and Washington and five each from Maryland and East.

Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia each as three runners with two apiece from Indiana, New Hampshire and Tennessee.

Eight states are represented by one runner: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio and Oregon.

Sam Worley, the South Regional winner, is hoping to take home the Foot Locker national title (Photo: KevinMorris@PhotoRun)

Watch out for Worley

Coming off a second-place finish last week at Nike Cross Nationals, Sam Worley from New Braunfels, Texas, is among the favorites in the Foot Locker boys race. Worley’s only loss this season was to Casey Clinger, who became a two-time NXN champion last week.

Only one Texas runner has won the Foot Locker nationals in the event’s 37-year history, and that was back in 1985: Reuben Reina from San Antonio. Worley, the South Regional winner, could be the second because someone will need to take a step up to beat him Saturday.

However, Worley is one of five boys runners, pulling the NXN-Foot Locker double and the travel and the miles could take a toll.

Nine of the 40 boys competed in last year’s race led by Seth Hirsch from Omaha, who finished ninth; Finn Gessner from Madison, Wis., who was 11th; and Noah Affolder from Carlisle, Pa., who was 15th.  That trio all should contend this year.

The others returning finishers are: No. 16 Reed Brown from South Lakes, Texas; No. 24 Matthew Pereira from Kildeer, Ill.; No. 28 Tibebu Proctor from  Seattle; No. 29 Waleed Suliman from Richmond, Va.; No. 35 Matt Grossman from Millburn, N.J.; and No. 37 Talon Hull from Ogden, Utah.

Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) entered the season ranked in the top five, but an opening loss against IMG Academy sent them tumbling. The Rams have since re-entered the Super 25, and now they have a chance to prove they’re the best team in Georgia and one of the best in the country.

Standing in their way, however, is an unbeaten Roswell (Ga.) squad.

So who holds the edge in Saturday’s AAAAAAA championship in Atlanta?

According to USA TODAY High School Sports’ score predictor, Grayson pulls out a somewhat convincing win.

When your roster includes a highly-recruited five-star and two four-stars, chances are most opponents will be overmatched.

That was just the case Thursday, when No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) faced Hollywood (Calif.). The Trailblazers ran away with a 93-46 win, but reports say the starters—including Marvin Bagley, UCLA commit Cody Riley, and Arizona State commit Remy Martin—played just 15 minutes of game time.

And in that time they threw down 18 dunks, some spectacular.

Under Armour announced Thursday the official rosters for the Under Armour All-American Game, which will be Dec. 1 in Orlando and televised live on ESPN.

The 115 players selected will play under in-game coaches Deion Sanders (Team Armour) and Mike Golic (Team Highlight). Former NFL coaches Herm Edwards and Steve Mariucci will serve as practice coaches.

“The Under Armour All-America Game has become one of my favorite weeks each year,” Edwards said. “It is a week of intense competition that allows the brightest talent in high school football to shine on the field as well as bond during the week while enjoying fun and exciting activities. I can’t wait to return to Orlando later this month.”

Both Edwards and Mariucci have coached in the game previously.

“The Under Armour All-America Game continues to produce some of football’s biggest stars both on the college and NFL level,” Mariucci said. I look forward to once again coaching the next generation of football talent in Orlando this year.”

Coaches of six teams in the Super 25 were named finalists for U.S. Army All-American Bowl Coach of the Year.

The award will be presented during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Awards Show in San Antonio on Jan. 6, the night before the Army Bowl.

According to the selection committee, the award “honors the nation’s top high school football coach for exceptional coaching abilities and leadership skills, and acknowledges his role as a positive influence to young Americans on and off the field.”

The finalists listed in alphabetical order are: Elijah Brooks from No. 4 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.); Gabe Infante from No. 13 St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia); John Lambourne from No. 12 Bingham (South Jordan, Utah); Bruce Rollinson from No. 9 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.); Kenny Sanchez from No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas); and Thomas Wilcher from No. 14 Cass Tech (Detroit).

All but Infante have completed their seasons. St. Joseph’s Prep plays for a Pennsylvania state title this weekend against Central Catholic (Pittsburgh).

The East nominees are quarterback Hunter Johnson from Brownsburg (Ind.); linebacker Nate McBride from Vidalia (Ga.); and offensive linemen Nick Brahms from Navarre (Fla.) and Josh Lugg from North Allegheny (Wexford, Pa.).

The West nominees are offensive linemen Wyatt Davis from St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), Brett Neilon (Santa Margarita Catholic, Calif.) and Foster Sarrell from Graham-Kapowsin (Graham, Wash.); and defensive linemen Jaelen Phillips from Redlands East Valley (Relands, Calif.).

No. 16 American Heritage wins third Florida 5A title in four years to cap perfect season

No. 16 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) won its third Florida 5A title in four years, but added the extra accomplishment of the first undefeated season in school history.

Heritage held off Ponte Vedra 35-33 on Friday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando to cap a 14-0 year under first-year coach Pat Surtain Sr.

Surtain was promoted from defensive coordinator in the offseason after coach Mike Rumph left for the University of Miami staff.

His team found itself down 13-0 early in the game, but bounced back.

“In tough situations, that’s when you make tough people. They just put their heads down. They continued to work,” Surtain told the Sun-Sentinel. “What an adverse situation it was [down 13-0]. We haven’t faced a deficit like that, but we remained resilient. We had all the confidence in the world that our guys would bounce back.”

Heritage opened the fourth quarter with a 21-20 lead after neither team scored in the third quarter and had a first-and-goal at the 5. Quarterback Jason Brown ran in from the 5 to push the advantage to 28-20.

Ponte Vedra (13-1) drove down the field on a pair of big pass plays and then got a touchdown run from quarterback Nick Tronti, but the potential game-tying two-point pass was knocked away to make the score 28-20.

After a huge kickoff return, Heritage responded right back and Brown went in from 1-yard out for a 35-26 lead with 5:39 remaining. It was his third rushing TD of the game; he finished with four total scores.

Then it was Tronti’s turn again. A 2-yard TD run cut the lead to 35-33 with 3:06 left. Tronti finished with two rushing touchdowns and five total scores.

American Heritage attempted to run out the clock and converted one first down, but a bad snap led to a 15-yard loss. That led to a Patriots punt on fourth-and-27 with 12 seconds left.

Somehow, though, after sending everyone to block the punt, Ponte Vedra had no one back to receive. The ball bounced around as time expired.

Defending Super 25 national champion Chino Hills (Calif.) won its 41st consecutive game with an 84-70 victory against Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) on Friday at the American Family Insurance Hoophall West in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Chino Hills, ranked No. 9 in the Super 25, went 35-0 last season and is off to a 6-0 start thus far.

Gorman trimmed the lead to seven at one point in the second half and then got the advantage back to 10 at several stages in the final three minutes but were not able to come back.

LiAngelo Ball finished with 30 points, Elizjah Scott had 20 points and 14 rebounds and LaMelo Ball had 19 points and seven assists for Chino Hills, which was held to less than 100 points for only the second time this season. Last year’s team tied the state record with 100 games of 100 points or more.

Jamal Bey finished with 30 points to lead the Gaels on 12 of 21 shooting from the field.

Gorman, which had been ranked No. 20 before falling out of the rankings this week, played without Charles O’Bannon, who is sidelined with a foot injury. He is ranked as the No. 9 shooting guard in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings.
