Ty Jones is coming off one of the most prolific seasons for a receiver in Utah high school football history.

The 6-4 senior from Provo had 1,523 yards and 20 touchdowns — both among tops in the state record book.

He accomplished that on 63 receptions, meaning an average of 24.2 yards per catch and a touchdown every three times he caught the ball.

The numbers and his skills were enough to make him a U.S. Army All-American, and he officially joined the elite team Monday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

He was honored in front of teammates, parents and classmates.

The Army Bowl is Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

Jones is a three-star Washington commit.

The visit to Provo was the final spot on the Selection Tour in advance of the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas receiver says bowl game won't be only factor in college choice

Wide receiver Michael Harley will be watching the Russell Athletic Bowl with interest when West Virginia plays Miami on Dec. 28.

Harley, from No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), commited to West Virginia in June but received a Miami offer last month and has visited the campus multiple times.

Harley said the result of the bowl game will be a factor, but contrary to a report, not the only one, he told USA TODAY High School Sports on Monday night.

“No sir, it’s not that simple,” Harley said when asked whether, as reported, the winner of the game would automatically be his college choice.

“I will stay committed or commit to Miami when the time is right,” he said. “Everything is 50-50 between the game two schools.”

Harley was quoted as saying that he would attend the winning school by 247Sports, although the story goes on to note that Harley planned to visit both schools in January. National Signing Day is Feb. 1.

Harley plans to attend the bowl game at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, also the site of his incredible performance Friday in the Florida 7A title game. In a 45-6 victory against Plant (Tampa) that gave Aquinas a three-peat, Harley had five receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Among them was a 62-yarder from Jake Allen that led to the running clock late in the third quarter.

The speedy 5-9 Harley will play his final high school game at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

A Maine community is in stunned mourning after a beloved track coach suddenly died Sunday from an apparent heart attack after running on a treadmill.

Will Fulford, the track and cross country coach at Biddeford (Maine), was running alongside his wife when he collapsed and lost consciousness, Ashley Potvin-Fulford told the Portland Press Herald.

Fulford, 29, was also a special education teacher at Biddeford.

“Will was a quiet, kind man and our kids loved working with him,” Jeremie Sirois, the school principal, told the paper. “It’s a huge blow to our kids and our athletic program.”

That’s Lamb flying over the middle to make a spectacular one-handed grab. His efforts weren’t enough, however, as Foster fell 31-24 to Temple (Texas) in the Class 5A Division I state semifinals Saturday.

Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) continued to move upward in the latest Super 25 Computer rankings for boys basketball, pushing from No. 4 to No. 2.

Chino Hills (Calif.) remains No. 1, with Montverde Academy (Fla.) and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) is No. 5, having moved from No. 9 in the previous rankings.

The Super 25 Computer rankings are provided by Ken Massey. The ratings are designed to reward teams for their performance, and objectively quantify those performances. Strength of schedule is built into the model. The model also corrects for home field advantage. Teams lose less for a loss on the road and gain more for a win on the road. Margin of victory also is factored in. Because some of the data is based on past performances, the computer will be more accurate as the season progresses.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is No. 6 with Houston Math Science and Tech, Saint Anthony (N.J.), Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Klein Forest (Houston) rounding out the top 10.

La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.), the No. 1 team in the Super 25 Expert rankings, starts the second 10 followed by Garfield (Seattle), DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.), Shadow Mountain (Pheonix) and Maple Grove (Minn.).

Detroit Jesuit (Michigan) checks in at No. 16 followed by Foothills Christian (El Cajon, Calif.), Apple Valley (Minn.), Dekaney (Texas) and Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.).

The final five spots belong to Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.), Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia), Omaha South (Neb.), DeSoto (Texas) and Overland (Aurora, Colo.).

Safe to say Aquira DeCosta, the top-ranked girls basketball player in the Class of 2018, is off to a good start. A really good start.

The 6-2 DeCosta has led St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.) to a 5-0 record heading into the Nike Tournament of Champions, beginning next week in Phoenix.

She was named the Most Valuable Player of the Cardinal Newman Classic in Santa Rosa after posting a total of 57 points and 42 rebounds in three games. That included a game of 20 points and 20 rebounds against Menlo-Atherton.

An American Family Insurance Preseason ALL-USA selection, he then had 24 and 10 in a victory against Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (San Francisco).

Thus far, she is averaging 18.2 points and 13.4 rebounds, an increase from averages of 15.2 and 9.4 last season.

RELATED: American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Girls Basketball Team

St. Mary’s, which was ranked No. 1 in the Super 25 for much of last season, is ranked No. 16 this season. The Rams are without Mi’Cole Cayton, now at Cal, and Kat Tudor, now at Oregon State, and lost another player to transfer.

“We have lost some key players last year that were clutch so I do believe that I have more responsibility on myself this season,” DeCosta said. “I have been working on my communication both on and off the court and I am building up my leadership role on this team. I feel like I’m handling it pretty well so far and I’m just going to continue what I’m doing.”

DeCosta is coming off a summer in which he averaged 10.1 rebounds and 9.6 points for Team USA in U17 World Championships.

She narrowed her recruiting choices to six, announcing the finalists in no particular order on Nov. 1 — Baylor, UCLA, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisville and Washington.

“My game has its areas for improvement like anyone else’s so I’m constantly working on it,” she said. “I’ve been specifically working on my mid- to long-range shot more and then my ballhandling and just being more aggressive and a dominant force on the court.”

The TOC provides an opportunity for Stockton to test itself against many of the nation’s best programs. The Ram ran through the event last season with four wins, including a five-point finals victory against nationally ranked Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.).

“The team and I, we are focused on what we have to do and we’re ready for anything coming our way,” DeCosta said. “I think that we are actually playing really good. We’re playing with a lot of heart and intensity and even though we have a long way to go, I’m proud of how hard we are working every day to get better and to reach our full potential as a team.”

Michigan lands four-star WR Tarik Black

Michigan added its first 2017 football recruit of the week today, when Cheshire, Conn. four-star receiver Tarik Black committed to the Wolverines.

Black, a 6-foot-4, 208-pound receiver, chose the Wolverines over Auburn, Alabama and Stanford, among others.

He is ranked as the nation’s No. 17 receiver and No. 124 overall player in the 247Sports Composite.

Michigan also is pursuing high-level receivers in Detroit Cass Tech five-star Donovan Peoples-Jones, who will announce Thursday night on ESPN, and Clay-Chalkville, Ala. four-star Nico Collins. U-M coach Jim Harbaugh visited him last week, two days after Auburn’s Gus Malzahn. Collins took official visits to Michigan (Sept. 3), Auburn (Sept. 10) and Alabama (Nov. 12).

With Black’s commitment coming just hours after running back A.J. Dillon decommitted, Michigan is back to 21 commitments in the 2017 class.

In addition to Peoples-Jones on Thursday, U-M is awaiting decisions from Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson on Friday and IMG Academy (Fla.) center Cesar Ruiz on Monday.

Longtime Cedar Hill (Texas) coach Joey McGuire told his team Wednesday that he is leaving the school to join new Baylor coach Matt Rhule’s coaching staff, according to The Dallas Morning News.

The Dallas report cited three Cedar Hill players and said SicEm365.com first reported the news..

“All I saw was that he was in tears,” wide receiver Camron Buckley said.

McGuire spent 14 seasons at Cedar Hill and won state titles in 2006 and back-to-back in 2013 and ’14.

He had an offer to join the Texas coaching staff as tight ends and special teams coach in 2015 but wanted his son Garret to finish high school at Cedar Hill before making a move.

McGuire is the third high school coach in Texas on Rhule’s staff. David Wetzel (Reagan; San Antonio) and Shawn Bell (Cedar Ridge) also are said to be joining the staff. Wetzel was the current president of the Texas High School Coaches Association. Bell is a former Baylor quarterback.

The specific positions for McGuire, Wetzel and Bell have not been announced.

Legendary Baylor football coach Grant Teaff had implored Rhule to go and hire some Texas high school coaches to build a bond to the state’s high school programs. He seems to have taken the advice to heart in a big way.

Bishop Gorman's Tate Martell wins Gatorade National Football Player of the Year

No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) quarterback Tate Martell has been named the 2016-17 Gatorade National Football Player of the Year.

Martell received the honor in a surprise presentation at his home from former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, who was in the family kitchen when Martell returned home from school. George, wearing a chef’s hat and apron, reached under the counter and pulled out the trophy.

“Tate really deserves to be this year’s Gatorade National Football Player of the Year because he embodies everything the award stands for,” George said in a new release. “Not only has Tate excelled on the field, but he’s also a stellar student and is a positive influence in the community. I’m excited to follow his career and watch all the things he will accomplish in the future.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence as well as high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Martell is now a finalist for the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year award, which will be presented in July in Los Angeles.

Martell has won the Gatorade Nevada State Player of the Year twice — once a sophomore and this year. This season, Martell led the Gaels to another undefeated season and a third consecutive Super 25 championship. He finished his career with a 45-0 record and 113 touchdown passes. As a senior, he completed 136 of 215 passes for 2,362 yards and 41 touchdowns with just one interception. He also rushed for 1,257 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Martell has a 3.32 grade point average. He has volunteered as a youth football coach and as a mentor to elementary-school students.

“Big-game experience, toughness and a lightning-quick release have helped elevate Tate Martell into one of the top prospects in the 2017 class,” said Craig Haubert, ESPN’s national recruiting coordinator said. “(He)  has shown big-play ability with the tools to hurt defenses with both his arm and legs. Despite his lack of ideal stature, he has proven to be resourceful as a passer, blending athleticism, mechanics and feel for the position to be productive from the pocket or to create second chances and keep plays alive. Martell has proven himself a competitive and talented player and has amassed a track record of wins that’s impressive as any in this class.”

Martell will play his last high school game at the U.S. Army All-American Game on Jan. 7 in San Antonio and days later will enroll at Ohio State.

It has by no means been an easy road for No. 3 DeSoto (Texas) to the Texas 6A-II championship, and it’s not getting any easier with Steele (Cibelo) awaiting them.

Steele, whose only loss was a 59-56 overtime thriller against No. 13 Lake Travis (Austin) at the start of September, has breezed through the playoffs, with its closest game being a 17-0 victory against Vandergrift.

But can the Knights take down the Eagles?

According to USA TODAY High School Sports’ score predictor, Desoto pulls out the win by a touchdown.

Score Predictor uses data from the Super 25 computer to compare two teams and plays multiple simulations to determine the most likely result.
