Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and assistants Jeff Capel and Jon Scheyer had a prominent seat on Day 1 of the City of Palms Classic in Florida.

Among the players they came to see was Tampa Catholic’s Kevin Knox, a 6-8 senior who is ranked as the No. 2 small forward in the nation by ESPN.com.

Knox, an American Family Insurance Preseason ALL-USA selection, did not disappoint with 30 points as Tampa Catholic beat East St. Louis (Ill.) 77-72.

Knox has narrowed his top five to Duke, Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina.

The numbers are astounding:

West Orange-Stark (Orange) won its second consecutive Texas 4A Division II state championship with a 24-6 victory against upset-minded Sweetwater.

The six points came when Sweetwater’s Luke James picked up a fumbled snap and went 96 yards for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

That means that West Orange-Stark’s defense did not allow a point — again. And it only allowed 148 total yards (92 in the first half).

For the season, the Mustangs allowed 69 points for the entire season, and never allowed more than 21 in a game. They allowed an average of 4.2 points per game (meanwhile, the team scored more than 800 points).

West Orange-Stark opened the season with four consecutive shutouts. In the fifth game against Silsbee, the final score was 51-2. Add in four more shutouts, including in the first postseason game. West Orange-Stark allowed only 39 points combined in six postseason victories.

“We’ve had a lot of great defenses here,” coach Cornel Thompson said. “We’ve played in 5A, 4A so it’s hard to compare defenses, but this is the best defense I’ve ever seen in 4A Division II.”

The 6-0 deficit Friday was really the first time West Orange-Stark was challenged this season.

The Mustangs got on the scoreboard on their final drive of the first half on a Jeremiah Shaw 2-yard score taking a 7-6 lead into the intermission,

“It was one play in the first quarter of the game,” junior linebacker Jerrick Spencer said. “We told each other we have three more quarters and bunch of plays left in this quarter to make it up.”

Aledo became the first Texas team to win six state championships in eight years with a 24-16 win against Calallen (Corpus Christi)  in the Class 5A Division II title game.

The run includes three 16-0 seasons — 2010, 2013 and 2016 — and this year’s edition scored a whopping 883 points, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Amid all that, the jaw-dropping play in the state title game was courtesy of 14-year-old freshman running back Jace McClellan, who dragged defenders into the end zone for the final yards of a 59-yard run.

The play can be seen on the video below at about the 40-second mark.

http://www.hudl.com/video/2/16956/585511eaff0d1a12409acd56

“I was really determined to get in,” McClellan told the Morning News. “I made a cut, I made another cut and then I saw the goal line.”

The 59 yards were among his total of 98 on 13 carries. That earned him offensive player of the year.

And on Saturday, it earned him his first college scholarship offer from SMU.

For the second consecutive game, Wheeling (Ill.) won a game at the buzzer.

T.J. Best’s shot from two feet inside halfcourt went off the glass and in for a 51-50 victory against Elk Grove

“A lot like last week, we called a timeout with 3.1 seconds left and the kids executed the play perfectly,” Wheeling coach Mike O’Keeffe told the Daily Herald. “We wanted to get the ball in T.J.’s hands and let him make a play. Michael Best set a great ball screen for his brother, and T.J. made a big-time shot.”

Best finished with 15 points, all in the second half.

Last week, Deshon Jacobs hit the game-winner in a 45-43 victory against Rolling Meadows.

Saturday was a big day for the Jones family in Arlington, Texas.

John Stephen Jones, the son of Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones and grandson of owner Jerry Jones, led Highland Park to a 16-7 victory against Temple for the state 5A Division I title at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Cowboys.

John Stephen was named the game’s offensive most valuable player after scoring on a 36-yard run in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7 and then reaching the end zone on a 1-yard run on a fourth down in the final two minutes of the third quarter. The second TD provided the winning points.

Here is how dad and granddad saw the go-ahead TD via the FoxSports Southwest broadcast.

The title was the first for Highland Park since 2005, when its quarterback was Matthew Stafford.

John Stephen isn’t the biggest. He isn’t the fastest. He isn’t the strongest. He will run hard, and he will do exactly what it takes to win a football game. He won’t impress anyone stepping off the bus, but he will leave an impact after the game is over.

He has that moxie, that other stuff we talk about when talking about good quarterbacks. And now he’s a state champion.

Only a junior, he’ll lead Highland Park’s title defense campaign in 2016.

Clairton (Pa.) cornerback Lamont Wade has decided to remain in his home state and committed to Penn State on Saturday night.

Wade is ranked as the No. 5 player at his position, No. 2 player in Pennsylvania and No. 50 player overall, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He was rated as a five-star player by Rivals and Scout and a four-star player by 247Sports and ESPN.

He released a commitment video but also donned a Penn State hat in making the announcement at an event in Clairton to top off a dapper white tuxedo jacket and black blow tie.

Wade, who is the top-rated recruit in Penn State’s class thus far, is an early enrollee and will begin at Penn State next month after he plays in the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 1 in Orlando.

His final five were Penn State, Pitt, West Virginia, Tennessee and UCLA among 25 reported offers.

Wade developed a close relationship with Nittany Lions coach James Franklin and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith.

No. 3 DeSoto finally has its Texas state championship

DeSoto (Texas) finally had that elusive state championship.

The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the Super 25, never trailed in beating Steele (Cibolo) 38-29 to win the Class 6A Division II before a crowd of more than 40,000 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

TCU quarterback commit Shawn Robinson, the team’s star all season after transferring in the summer from Denton Guyer, threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 190 and a TD. DeSoto got a scare when an injured Robinson left the game with less than 10 minutes remaining, but he returned on the next series.

The victory capped a 16-0 season for DeSoto after a 6-6 year in Todd Peterson’s first season as head coach.

Though the Eagles never trailed against Steele (14-2), their penchant for closes games continued — the team had trailed in the last three playoff games. Steele cut the margin to 35-29 on a 20-yard run by Texas Tech quarterback commit Xavier Martin.

After forcing a DeSoto punt, Steele had possession in its own territory with eight minutes remaining in the game. But Isaiah Stewart forced a fumble, DeSoto took over and then added a field goal to set the final margin with 2:06 left.

The celebration followed.

All season long, it seemed like everything was leading to this for DeSoto. The pummeling of talented teams. The two wins against rival Cedar Hill. The escape from a small but determined Abilene team. The defensive touchdowns to lift them over Klein Collins.

Despite some close calls, these Eagles aren’t just lucky. They’re a talented, disciplined, unified team that’s easily one of the best to come out of DFW in a while. They were the best team in this division, and possibly in this classification, all year long.

No. 22 Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) has won its second state title in program history, defeating Boiling Springs (Spartanburg) 28-21 in 5A state championship game Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.

The Silver Foxes finish the season a perfect 15-0 and reached the state title game for the fourth time in five years.

It’s the ninth career title for coach Tom Knotts, who previously won titles in North Carolina at West Charlotte and Independence High.

Boiling Springs cut the lead to 28-21 when Mason Streater hit tight end Michael Bollinger for a 16-yard touchdown with 6:51 left in the game. On the next possession Dutch Fork drove to the 21 but a pair of penalties took them out of field goal range and forced a punt.

Boiling Springs took over at its own 12 with 2:13 remaining and needing a touchdown. After making some headway Boiling Springs came up just short off a first down and Dutch Fork took over on downs. Dutch Fork got a first down and sealed the victory.

Dutch Fork led 21-14 at halftime behind 234 yards passing and two touchdowns from Reese Nichols. Ron Hoff had a rushing and receiving score in the first half and Bobby Irby caught a TD.

Dutch Fork pushed the lead to 28-21 with 3:40 left in the third quarter when Hoff scored on a 5-yard run for his third of the game.

No. 13 Lake Travis rolls to Texas 6A championship

No. 13 Lake Travis (Austin) closed a successful four days of state championship games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington with a dominating 41-13 victory against The Woodlands on Saturday night.

Lake Travis jumped to a 27-0 lead and rolled to its first 6A Division I title and sixth state title in school history. The previous five — from 2007 to 2011 — were in 4A.

The Cavaliers lost in the 6A Division II title game last year to Katy and opened this season with a 35-28 loss to Judson. Lake Travis won the next week against eventual state finalist Steele (Cibolo) 59-56 in overtime and rolled from there.

No team scored more than 21 points in Lake Travis’ last 14 victories and the closest any team got was 14.

“They worked their tails off,” coach Hank Carter said. “They sacrificed a lot to play football. Even practices are tough. It’s not like the other sports. The things they give up to come and do this. It makes it all worth it. What a feather in their cap as they go out.”

SMU quarterback commit Charlie Brewer was dominant on both the ground and in the air. He was efficient as a passer, dynamic as a runner, and even pulled down a one-handed grab.

Brewer was 27 of 37 for 361 yards with four touchdowns and an interception (only his third of the season). He finished the season 263 of 340 for a completion percentage of 77.35. That breaks the National Federation of State High School Associations record held by Dano Graves of Folsom (Calif.), who completed 75.2 percent in 2009.

“I grew up watching my brother have all that success,” Brewer said. “I wanted that. I finally joined the state championship club tonight. We got a really special group. Really just a brotherhood. We stuck together this season.”

Arkansas commit Maleek Barkley had six catches for 138 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown.

The Woodlands ended its season at 15-1 but regardless of the result, the support shown by the Texas High School football community at large in the wake of Grant Milton’s injury has been heartwarming.

Emma Baker of Rancho Christian (Calif.) sets national record for points by a female kicker

Emma Baker of Rancho Christian (Temecula) became the first female to score a point in a California state football championship game, kicking a field goal and making all five of her extra point attempts.

Rancho Christian beat Amador (Sutter Creek) 38-13 for the Division 6-AA championship.

Her performance capped a season in which she set the national record for a female kicker with 99 points, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The junior went 8-for-10 on field goals and 75 for 78 on extra points. Her long for a field goal was 40 yards.

“I just feel really honored to be a part of this team and how they welcomed me,” Baker told the Press-Enterprise. “I’m extremely proud to call all of them my brothers.”

In an interview with the Inland Empire, she added, “I honestly didn’t think about the records. When I kick in games, I don’t think about much except what I need to do…put the ball through the uprights. Sometimes I don’t even know the length of my field goals until after the game. I know there have been other female football kickers, and even female field players, but to score eight points in a championship game… I feel honored.”

In her third season as the team’s kicker, she has 208 career points.

“Emma’s consistency over these years has been off the charts,” coach Jim Kunau said told the Press-Enterprise earlier this season. “The other players refer to her as ‘Money’ because she’s that reliable. She is unflappable out on the field.”

Baker is a star outside hitter on the school’s volleyball team — and often goes back and forth between practice — and also plays club soccer.

Centennial (Las Vegas) lost to No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), 61-52, as part of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, but Centennial’s Troy Brown had the moment of the event to this point.

Brown, an Oregon commit, went to the rim against Marvin Bagley, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2018, and delivered this dunk in his face. That made the crowd at Bishop Gorman go wild as you can see in the video below.

Brown finished 21 points in the loss for Centennial (7-2).

Bagley had 21 for Sierra Canyon (7-0) despite sitting for a long stretch of the first quarter. UCLA-bound Cody Riley had 15 for Sierra Canyon.

The game was a showcase game added to the tournament and not part of the Tarkanian bracket.

No. 6 St. John Bosco (Bellflower Calif.) scored the most points that De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) has allowed since at least 1979 in a 56-33 victory in the CIF state championship Open Division bowl.

Bosco finished 13-2 and closed the season with impressive victories against Corona Centennial, Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and De La Salle.

The Bosco offensive line led by Wyatt Davis was dominant in leading a rushing attack that posted 358 yards. Terrance Beasley ran for 150 yards and two scores. Re-Al Mitchell was 18-for-20 passing for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

De La Salle’s Kairee Robinson scored on a 60-yard TD run on the first series. Demetrious Flowers answered with a two-yard run to tie the score.

Beasley scored on a 6-yard run after a turnover and De La Salle then answered with a 1-yard run by Robinson and the score was 14-14.

Bosco scored on its next two possessions for a 28-14 lead on a 10-yard pass from Mitchell to Terrell Bynum and a 6-yard run by Flowers.

At halftime, it was 35-17 and then Bosco added another score with 7:45 left in the third quarter on a three-yard run by Beasley that capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive.

De La Salle (11-2) hit a field goal to trim the lead to 42-20 and then recovered an onside kick. That drive ended in a 43-yard TD catch by tight end Isaiah Foskey with 1:01 left in the third quarter.

Bosco was forced to punt and De La Salle got good field position, but then fumbled. The Braves turned that into a two-yard TD run by Flowers and the game was out of reach.

Under Armour All-American Lowell Narcisse commits to LSU again

Consider the hiring of Matt Canada as offensive coordinator at LSU a rousing success thus far.

With uncertainty around who Ed Orgeron would select as offensive coordinator and the style that LSU would play, both quarterback commits in the Class of 2017 — Myles Brennan and Lowell Narcisse — reopened their recruitment.

After Canada’s hiring, Brennan said he was sticking with his original choice and heading to LSU. Early Monday morning, Narcisse did the same, saying he had “decided to start the next chapter of my life at Louisiana State University.”

Narcisse’s decision comes a week after he reopened his recruitment.

Canada was hired after the dead period began so he could not have an in-person meeting with Narcisse, but the two spent time on the phone with Canada making his pitch.

Ranked as the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the class according to the 247Sports Composite, Narcisse missed his senior season at St. James (La.) after suffering an ACL injury. He had torn the ACL in the other knee the season before in the spring game but was able to come back late in the 2015 season.

He is expected to enroll in January and reports indicate that he will not be limited in spring practice.

Narcisse was selected as an Under Armour All-American, but will not play in the Jan. 1 game as his knee rehab continues.
