Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford looks back on experience of playing HS football in Texas

Earlier this month, Highland Park (Dallas) won its first Texas 5A Division I title since 2005, when Detroit Lions star QB Matthew Stafford was under center.

The Scots, behind Jerry Jones’ grandson John Stephen, defeated Temple 16-7 to take home the title.

Stafford sent the team a short video message before the game, and, ahead of his return to Dallas to face the Cowboys Monday, discussed what it was like playing high school football for a Texas powerhouse.

“I was a 15-year-old sophomore playing in Texas Stadium, playing against Ennis and a bunch of really good football teams, a bunch of cameras on you after the game,” Stafford said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “I think that kind of puts you in the spotlight early and lets you understand what it’s all about.”

And, speaking directly to his experience winning a state title, Stafford has fond memories.

“It’s really cool being a part of that. Obviously when we won the state championship it had been a pretty good while since we had won one before, so it was nice to kind of make that a real possibility for everybody again. I’m obviously proud they did it again this year.”

No. 3 overall player Marvin Wilson sets final 5 with one surprise

Marvin Wilson, the No. 1 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 3 player overall according to 247Sports, revealed his “final five” upon his arrival at the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando on Tuesday

And there was a surprise choice in the group.

Wilson’s five are Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State and South Florida. He will make his announcement on National Signing Day on Feb. 1.

Texas and Texas A&M did not make the final cut, but his relationship with new South Florida coach Charlie Strong — the former Longhorns coach — impacted his decision to include the Bulls.

“He’s somebody who got to know me as a guy throughout the process and that spoke volumes,” Wilson said. “Now that he’s at USF, I want to take that into consideration.”

Wilson, an American Family Insurance ALL-USA first team selection from Episcopal in Bellaire, Texas, is scheduled to visit LSU on Jan. 13 and said he has not determined which school will get his last official visit.

Six players ranked as five stars by the 247Sports Composite remain uncommitted with several set to announce at either the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 1 or the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7.

Here is a look at each player’s expected plan and schools that remain involved.

RELATED: Five-star Cam Akers picks Florida State

2. Foster Sarell, OT, Graham-Kapowsin (Graham, Wash.). Expected to announce his decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. His finalists are Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford, USC and Washington. He has taken official visits to all of them, except Stanford. He has visited Palo Alto numerous times unofficially. Stanford has landed another top 20 tackle in Walker Little from Bellaire (Episcopal, Texas).

3. Marvin Wilson, DT, Episcopal (Bellaire, Texas). Revealed his top five of Florida State, Oklahoma, LSU, Ohio State and South Florida when he arrived at the Under Armour All-America Game. He plans to announce on signing day. He has taken official visits to Oklahoma, Florida State and Ohio State and has a visit planned for Jan. 13 to LSU. He said he has not decided where — or if — he will use his fifth visit.

7. Jeffrey Okudah, CB, South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, Texas). Expected to announce at the Army Bowl and is said to be down to Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida. Ohio State has long been considered the favorite.

12. Darnay Holmes, CB, Calabassas (Calif.). Expected to announce at the Army Bowl from Nebraska, Ohio State, USC and UCLA. The Bruins are the favorite, but he visited Ohio State for the Michigan game and got an in-home visit from Ohio State coaches before the dead period began in mid-December.

16. Joseph Lewis, WR, Hawkins (Los Angeles). Has not set a commitment date, saying in his most recent USA TODAY blog that he might announce at the Army Bowl, but he also could wait until signing day. He had in-home visit with USC, Nebraska and Arizona State among others.

31. Aubrey Solomon, DE, Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.). Expected to commit on signing day and has official visits scheduled for January to USC, Auburn and Florida in the final three weeks.
