Army All-American Bowl commitments: WR Jamire Calvin to Oregon State

Wide receiver Jamire Calvin became the first player to commit during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl when he selected Oregon State on Saturday in San Antonio in a emotional moment with his family.

Calvin, from Cathedral (Los Angeles), is ranked as the No. 36 wide receiver by the 247Sports Composite.

His finalists had been Alabama, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon State and Washington State with many analysts thinking he would be heading to Nebraska. He also received a New Year’s Day offer from Baylor.

“Originally my mind was set on another school, but in the past few days talking with everybody, talking with my dad and the other guys, I hard a heart change. Being able to play with my best friend is just a blessing.”

The Beavers also have a commitment from Jeffrey Manning, a Cathedral defensive back.

Calvin had 86 catches for more than 1,300 yards with 17 touchdowns.

RELATED: Who is winning the recruiting race among Army All-Americans?

Here are the remaining players who are scheduled to announce during the Army Bowl telecast and when:

Eno Benjamin, RB, Wylie East (Wylie, Texas) — Second quarter

Benjamin was an Iowa commit who was among the players who decommitted after defying Iowa’s policy by taking other official visits. His final five are Arizona State, Missouri, Texas, Utah and Michigan. He is ranked as the No. 8 running back.

Chuck Filiaga, OT, Aledo (Texas) — Second quarter

The 6-6 Filiaga moved from California to Texas before his senior year of high school, but he doesn’t seem likely to move west for college. Michigan, Oklahoma and Nebraska are his finalists. He is listed as the No. 14 offensive tackle.

Bubba Bolden, S, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) — Third quarter

Will Bolden joins high school teammates Tate Martell, Haskell Garrett and Tyjon Lindsey at Ohio State? Or will he stay on the West Coast at USC? Bolden is a former USC commit. He is ranked as the No. 6 safety.

Jeffrey Okudah, CB, South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, Texas) — Third quarter

Ranked as the No. 7 player overall, he is said to be down to Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida State. Ohio State has long been considered the favorite.

Darnay Holmes, CB, Calabassas (Calif.) — Fourth quarter

Ranked as the No. 12 player overall, he is expected to choose from among Nebraska, Ohio State, USC and UCLA. The Bruins are the favorite, but he visited Ohio State for the Michigan game and got an in-home visit from Ohio State coaches before the dead period began in mid-December. The Buckeyes’ late run could sway him. Holmes said this week that he had not finalized his decision and was planning to consult with his mother when she arrived in San Antonio on Thursday.

Foster Sarell, OT, Graham-Kapowsin (Graham, Wash.) — Fourth quarter

The No. 2 player overall in the Class of 2017, Sarrell has  finalists of Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford, USC and Washington. He has taken official visits to all of them, except Stanford. He has visited Palo Alto numerous times unofficially. Stanford has landed another top 20 tackle in Walker Little from Bellaire (Episcopal, Texas). “It was really tough, it was a lot of deciding and meeting with my family, rethinking everything,” Sarell said. “I made my choice this week. It comes down to best fit, where you want to be and that’s where it came down for me.”

Darnay Holmes' little nephew really wanted him to commit to Ohio State

Darnay Holmes, one of the top cornerbacks in the Class of 2017, committed to UCLA during Saturday’s Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

That was a popular choice with his family — except his little nephew.

As Holmes was talking about his decision, his nephew was pointing to the Ohio State hat on the table. When Holmes instead picked up the UCLA hat, you can see the disappointed reaction.

Here is something you won’t see very often: UCLA-bound Cody Riley dunked so hard for Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) that the rim was tilted to the side, leading to the game being delayed.

After a delay, Riley and teammate Marvin Bagley III pushed the backboard back into place so the rim was back in its proper spot.

Sierra Canyon beat Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) 84-52 in the daylong Sierra Canyon Super Showcase. Bagley had 24 and Riley finished with 15.

National Hoopfest: Dunk in final seconds lifts Memphis East over No. 4 Montverde

Consider the season series even at one game apiece.

Chandler Lawson got free for a dunk in the closing seconds as Memphis East upended No. 4 Montverde Academy (Fla.) 75-73 in the featured matchup of the Penny Hardaway National Hoopfest on Saturday at Arlington (Tenn.).

The victory avenges a loss to Montverde in the championship game of the City of Palms tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. last month. The teams could meet again in this week’s Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Mo.

R.J. Barrett scored for Montverde to tie the game at 73-73 with nine seconds remaining to set up the final sequence.

Memphis East had opened a lead late in the fourth quarter but Montverde closed it to one at 66-65 with more than three minutes remaining on consecutive three-pointers in what was largely a back-and-forth affair throughout.

Also at the event, No. 4 Simeon (Chicago) pulled away after a close first half to defeat Cordova (Tenn.), 80-61.

Texas-El Paso signee Evan Gilyard showed why he’s one of Illinois’ top seniors with a 32-point afternoon. Blake Williams scored 23 to lead the Wolves while Tyler Harris chipped in with 17.

After a miss by Panther Creek (Valera), Holden Sinclair hit a full-court buzzer beater. And we mean, full court. He is literally standing under one basket and then hit the shot at the other end.

Sinclair is used to throwing deep — he’s also the quarterback on the school’s football team.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl for 2017 was barely over when Derrik Allen, a five-star cornerback in the Class of 2018, was looking forward to next year. And he tagged the nation’s No. 1 recruit, Clemson quarterback commit Trevor Lawrence.

Both Allen and Lawrence are from Georgia so it seems likely they will be assigned to the East team.

Allen is ranked as the No. 3 cornerback and No. 23 player overall by the 247Sports Composite.

Allen has 33 reported offers.

Najee Harris, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, arrived in Alabama on Sunday and will enroll at the University of Alabama in time for classes, which begin Wednesday.

Harris was spotted in the airport by AL.com along with quarterback signee Tua Tagovailoa, who was on the same flight. Tagovailoa had said earlier in the week at the U.S. Army All-American that he and Harris were on the same flight.

Harris later texted Scout.com and wrote, “I’m here at Alabama and going to ‘Bama.” He has been committed to Maryland since the spring of 2015.

Michigan had made a late push for Harris from Antioch (Calif.).  Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh stopped in to see him in January at his school when recruiting other Bay Area players. Michigan held a satellite camp that Harris attended at Antioch in June and Harris took both an unofficial visit to Michigan for the Big House BBQ in August and an official visit to Michigan.

RELATED: Seven commitments at Army Bowl

Harbaugh even attended one of Harris’ games during Michigan’s bye week, when Harbaugh helped introduce the Homecoming queen. Even Harris’ brother tweeted last week he wanted Najee to attend Michigan.

Harris, an American Family Insurance ALL-USA running back, said earlier in the week that he wasn’t planning to make a public announcement of his intentions at the Bowl and remained true to his word.

“Where I’m going is not a surprise,” he told USA TODAY Sports after the game. “I’m just not telling y’all.”

Earlier in the week, a person familiar with Harris’ plan said his mother asked Army Bowl officials to switch Harris’ flight Sunday from San Antonio to Birmingham. Harris was initially scheduled to fly home to Oakland. The person was not authorized to speak because Harris family’s request has not been made public.

However after the Army Bowl, his mother, Tianna Hicks, said, “His momma wants him home in Oakland.”

Harris also said he needs minor knee surgery for a small meniscus tear.

Cal QB commit Chase Garbers reacts to Sonny Dykes' firing

Cal quarterback commit Chase Garbers said he was “very shocked” when he learned Sunday that Bears coach Sonny Dykes was fired, but it won’t change his intention to go to Cal.

“I’m looking forward to who my next head coach will be,” Garbers told USA TODAY Sports. “I’m still a Bear and plan on signing with Cal.”

Garbers, from Corona Del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.), is ranked as the No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2017. He is among 13 commits in the Class of 2017, with two junior college transfers already signed.

Like many, he was caught off-guard by when the decision was made. Dykes was 19-30 in four years at Cal, which joins Western Michigan as the only FBS schools without head coaches. P.J. left Western Michigan for Wisconsin last week.

A search for a new head coach will begin immediately with the idea that a new coach could be in place by the end of the week as recruiting heats up when the end of the dead period. College football signing day is Feb. 1.

“It’s very odd to happen this late,” Garbers said. “But it is part of the process and it happens. I talked with the rest of the staff and a bunch of current players so that is good.”

Garbers threw his support on Twitter and an in interview behind offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, who was named Cal’s interim coach. At 31, he would be the youngest head coach in a Power 5 conference, if hired. Despite Cal losing Jared Goff and several top receivers, the Bears ranked No. 10 in FBS in offense in 2016.

“We all really want Spavital to be the guy,” he said, “but they’re going through the interview process.”

Running back Biaggio Ali-Walsh also told USA TODAY Sports that he intended to stick with his commitment. Ali-Walsh starred for three-time Super 25 champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) and was named the Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year as a junior.

“I’m still committed and I am excited to see who the new coach is. Regardless, Go Bears!!,” he wrote in a Twitter direct message.

On Twitter, Jordan Genmark-Heath, a safety prospect from Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), also affirmed his intention to stick with Cal. He committed in late October.

A questionable call at a girls basketball game led to a fight between the parents of two players in Florida last week, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel.

At some point during a game between Hagerty (Oviedo, Fla.) and Lake Mary (Fla.), the father of a Hagerty player—James Osgood Ackermann, 52—made a comment about the officiating.

The father of a Lake Mary player told the man to “shut up,” according to the police report. Ackermann then allegedly called the man an “idiot,” to which the man dared Ackermann to call him an idiot again. The police report states Ackermann did just that. The two then fought.

The two were eventually separated by other fans.

The Seminole County police are still investigating the incident.

2018 Ohio State QB commit Emory Jones predicts future title game greatness

$
0

A little confidence never hurt anyone.

And Heard County (Franklin, Ga.) star Emory Jones seems to have plenty of it. The Ohio State QB commit predicted Monday that he and the Buckeyes will be in the title game in a couple years.

That’s not a terribly bold claim, of course, given Ohio State’s recent success under Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ recruiting prowess. With that in mind, Jones’ next claim may be a bit tougher to bring to fruition—at least right away.

Jones, arguably the best dual-threat QB in the class of 2018, will have a lot of company in the Ohio State backfield to compete with, so getting on the field—in a couple years, that is—may be quite the challenge.

But hey, far be it from us to doubt him. He’s clearly uber-talented and there’s no reason to suggest he won’t be a major cog in the Buckeyes’ machine.

See ya in 2019!

Marvin Wilson (Photo: Jim Halley, USA TODAY Sports).

With 13 players having announced their commitments at the Under Armour All-America Game and U.S. Army All-American Bowl, seven players ranked in the Top 50 of the Super 25 Composite rankings remain uncommitted.

With National Signing Day set for Feb. 1, here is a look at those seven players. (The number represents the player’s ranking in the composite.)

3. Marvin Wilson, DT, Bellaire (Episcopal, Texas): The five-star was among the most popular players at the Under Armour All-America Game and then was on the sideline to watch the U.S. Army All-American Game. At the UA game, he announced his five finalists: Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma and South Florida. While South Florida seems the outlier in the group, Wilson cited his relationship with new Bulls coach Charlie Strong as the reason for his interest.

16. Joseph Lewis, WR, Hawkins (Los Angeles): The battle for the No. 3 wide receiver in the nation seems to be coming down to USC and Nebraska. Lewis gave his visit to Nebraska a high rating in his blog for USA TODAY High School Sports. USC will get the final say with an official visit scheduled on the final weekend. Greg Johnson, ranked as the No. 1 athlete in the country, also has offers from USC and Nebraska. They are not viewed as a package deal per se, but the opportunity to play together seems attractive.

31. Aubrey Solomon, DT, Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.). After an eventful week at the Army Bowl, Solomon announced a final four of Michigan, Alabama, USC and Georgia. He is a former Michigan commit and his mom is believed to hold Michigan in high regard. Georgia would present an opportunity for him to join many players he was with in high school. Solomon was born in Fresno, so a return to California – even southern California — might have some appeal.

34. Austin Jackson, OT, North Canyon (Phoenix). The 6-6, 280-pound Army All-American is ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Arizona and is being pursued by both Arizona State and Arizona. But expect him to head to California and sign with USC. He has taken official visits to Arizona State, USC, Washington and Oregon.

43. LaBryan Ray, DE, James Clemens (Madison, Ala.). The top-ranked player in the state of Alabama and an Under Armour All-American could remain at home. He has visits scheduled to Tennessee, Alabama and Florida and visited Ole Miss in early December.

45. Devon Hunter, S, Indian River (Chesapeake, Va.). His finalists are believed to be Virginia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Florida and North Carolina. He has visits scheduled for Florida, Auburn and Alabama before signing day. Virginia Tech is considered the heavy favorite.

49. Jeff Thomas, WR, East St. Louis (Ill.). Thomas showed out in scoring two long touchdowns at the Under Armour game and could garner significantly more interest. He has official visits to Louisville, Miami and Tennessee in the final three weeks. Some think he could remain in-state and select Illinois.
