Team USA will not participate in World Youth Championships citing security concerns
The United States will not participate in the IAAF World Youth Championships (World U18 Championships), USA Track and Field announced Monday.
The event is scheduled for Kenya, which has a “critical” crime and terrorism rating by the U.S. State Department.
According to a news release, USATF conducted a risk assessment and reviewed the State Department’s security summary.
“Due to increased security costs and the fact that all athletes would be aged 18 and younger, USATF has decided not to hold a selection event nor to travel to the championship,” according to a USATF news release.
This was to be the last year of the event with plans calling for regional events for juniors rather than a world championship.
Britain has previously pulled out of the event.

LaMelo Ball scores 92 points, dedicates performance to young girl in need of heart transplant
LaMelo Ball added another chapter to the lore of the Ball Brothers of Chino Hills (Calif.) when he dropped an insane 92 points in a 147-123 victory against Los Osos, according to Prep Circuit and other reports.
Ball was 37 for 61 from the field — 30 for 39 on two-point attempts and 7 for 22 from three. He also was 11 for 14 from the free throw line. He also added five rebounds and seven assists.
He had 41 of his 92 in the fourth quarter, according to BallIsLife.com. That’s in an eight-minute quarter. He finished with 63 in the second half.

“It was very exciting, almost overwhelming,” coach Stephan Gilling told The Los Angeles Times.
A four-star UCLA commit, the sophomore is the youngest of the three Balls Brothers. Lonzo is a freshman at UCLA, LiAngelo is a Chino Hills’ senior. The 92 is a Ball family record. LiAngelo is currently sitting out two weeks to rest up for the forthcoming playoffs, clearing the way for LaMello to serve as his team’s primary scoring threat.
The game was Chino Hills’ first since its 60-game winning streak was snapped by Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) on Saturday at the Nike Extravaganza.

“My boys get mad when they lose,” Lavar Ball, the boys’ father, told ESPN.com. “[LaMelo] started on fire. Just attacking the rim. They tried to double- and triple-team him after he scored 45. … He loves to score. That’s the type of things he’s going to do next year on a daily basis. It’s easy for him. He finally got to play his game.”
Ball’s tweet includes the hashtag #love4lexi. Lexi is the sister of a member of the Chino Hills dance team who is in need of heart transplant. She underwent surgery and is being kept alive via an Ecmo machine.
Ball and other members of the Chino Hills community have recently adopted the hashtag.
This was a tweet from the weekend, showing Lexi with positive news. Subsequent tweets over the last few days have indicated that her condition has worsened.
Ball’s on-court performance drew reactions far and wide, most strikingly from his brother at UCLA, Lonzo.
The plaudits for Ball’s 92 points also came from Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley and Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.
Todd Gurley, Jared Goff, Joc Pederson plan outing to see LaMelo Ball after 92-point game
Among those amazed by LaMelo Ball’s 92-point performance Tuesday for Chino Hills (Calif.) were Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley and Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.
They were so impressed that they are planning an outing to go see him play, as they noted in a Twitter conversation.
Players who scored 100 points in high school basketball history
As amazing as LaMelo Ball’s 92-point performance for Chino Hills (Calif.) was on Tuesday night, consider that there have been 1at least 5 players who have scored 100 in a boys game, according to the National Federation record book.
Given that the Federation only includes schools that are part of state associations, it is possible there could be more. There also are believed to be at least two instances in before 1925 that are not listed.
The most recent was Tigran Grigorian, who scored 100 in 2003 for Mesrobian (Pico Rivera, Calif.), in a game that ended 114-47. Mesrobian had only six players and used a full-court press for the entire game, according to news reports at the time. Afterward, the losing coach from Los Angeles Pacific Christian refused to shake the winning coach’s hand and even the Mesrobian athletic director expressed disdain for the feat.
The previous 100-point game came from Dajuan Wagner for Camden (N.J.) in 2001 on his way to Memphis and then becoming a first-round NBA draft pick.
Wagner’s century mark game came 22 years after Kenneth Johnson scored 105 for Grandfield (Okla.).
ALL-USA Watch: Michigan State signee Sidney Cooks reaches scoring milestone
Michigan State signee Sidney Cooks, the No. 5 player in the Class of 2017, reached a milestone Tuesday night.
The 6-4 forward from St. Joseph (Kenosha, Wis.) became the leading scorer in girls basketball in her county when she posted 24 points in a 59-24 victory against Racine Prairie.
Cooks has 1,683 points to break the mark of 1,681 points set by Madie Kaelber from Indian Trail (Kenosha). The team has three more games in the regular season before the postseason.
Cooks, a McDonald’s All American, was selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason team after averaging 23.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 2.9 assists as a junior as St. Joseph reached the state final. She also averaged 10.3 points and 7.8 rebounds for Team USA in FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer.
Super 25 Computer boys basketball rankings: Who's the top team in every state?
As we near the close of the high school basketball regular season, we took a look at the state by state rankings according to the Super 25 Computer.
Super 25 Computer rankings are provided by Ken Massey. The ratings are designed to reward teams for their performance, and objectively quantify those performances. Strength of schedule is built into the model. The model also corrects for home field advantage. Teams lose less for a loss on the road and gain more for a win on the road. Margin of victory also is factored in. Because some of the data is based on past performances, the computer will be more accurate as the season progresses. Once a team plays three games, the computer can better slot how it stacks up against teams nationally.

USA TODAY Sports' 2017 Composite Boys Basketball Player Recruiting rankings
With the spring signing period approaching, USA TODAY Sports has compiled its composite basketball rankings for the Class of 2017.
The composite represents the average rankings of the four major recruiting services – 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout. The lower the average the better. For players who are not ranked by a particular service, the player receives a maximum number based on the way players are ranked for each site beyond the last player (248 for 247, 101 for ESPN and Scout, and 151 for Rivals).
While opinions are split, Arizona signee DeAndre Ayton, the 7-footer from Hillcrest Academy (Phoenix) is the current No. 1 player followed by Washington signee Michael Porter Jr., a 6-10 forward from Nathan Hale (Seattle).
