Mitchell Robinson has his honorary jersey for the McDonald’s All American Game and he says now, “it’s starting to feel more real.”

Robinson, a 7-footer from Chalmette High (La.) was honored Friday when the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

“It’s awesome to me because I didn’t think I was going to make it at first,” Robinson said. “Then when I saw my name on TV it was shocking, like I was actually a McDonald’s All-American. It feels great.”

The McDonald’s game is March 29 at Chicago’s United Center.

Ranked No. 9 by ESPN, Robinson is averaging 27.5 points, 12 rebounds, nearly seven blocks and two steals per game.

With the upcoming All American game, Robinson is starting to get a sense that his high school career is winding down before he heads to Western Kentucky. Chalmette is unbeaten in district play entering the regular season finale Friday night.

“I’m starting to get a feel for it being the end,” he said. “I feel great about it. High school is really going to be over and then I’ll get the chance to make my dream come true.”

N.J. girl can play basketball with boys after court reverses decision

A New Jersey judge has ruled that a Catholic school girls can play on her school’s boys team, reversing his initial ruling, NJ.com reported.

Superior Court Judge Donald A. Kessler said that Sydney Phillips, now 13, must be allowed to play at St. Theresa’s School in Kenilworth, N.J. The eighth-grade boys team has one game remaining and the playoffs.

The case drew the attention of the WNBA’s New York Liberty, which invited Phillips to practice with them.

It went further when Sydney and her sister were expelled from the school Feb. 1 following their parents filing a lawsuit. The judge stayed the expulsions until a court hearing, and this week Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, head of the Archdiocese of Newark, reversed the decision to remove them from the school.

Among the reasons for the reversal of his Jan. 5 decision the judge cited were that two girls were allowed to play on the St. John the Apostle boys team after Tobin said the CYO rules were “unfair.” The boys on the team had unanimously voted not to play if the girls were no longer allowed on the team. The team was prevented from continuing its season, but Tobin also reversed that ruling and the team resumed play.

The Cardinal said the rules that call for boys to play with boys and girls to play with girls after the fourth grade will be reviewed at the end of the season, according to NJ.com.

“The settled legal right is that you have girls playing on boys teams,” Kessler said.

After the ruling, Theresa Mullen, Sydney’s mother, told NJ.com: “I’m happy the cardinal rescinded the expulsion and I’m happy that Sydney gets to play for the school that she loves and I’m happy that girls get to play at St. John’s School for the school that they love,” Mullen said moments after hearing Kessler’s decision in court.

Because St. Therese is a small school and not enough girls signed up to make a girls team this year, there was only a boys team. According to a lawsuit filed by her father, the adults at the school said she could not play on the boys. For its part, the school argued — according to the New York Post — that after some confusion over if the school would field a girls team, Phillips didn’t return her forms on time, a claim her father denied.

Olympian Sydney McLaughlin had added another national high school record to her collection.

McLaughlin, from Union Catholic (N.J.), set the mark in the 300 meters at the inaugural Artie O’Connor Invitational at The Armory in New York with a time of 36.82 seconds, according to DyeStat.com.

The previous record was 36.96 seconds by Francena McCorory from Bethel (Hampton, Va.) in 2006.

McLaughlin narrowly missed the record at the Millrose Games last Saturday with a time of 37.09 seconds.

“There a so many more people at Millrose and it got to my head a little bit. I didn’t run my race,” McLaughlin told DyeStat.com. “I felt like I was going along with the flow and wasn’t competing.”

McLaughlin is already the national recordholder in the 400 meters indoors and the 400-meter hurdles outdoors

McLaughlin was named the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year last spring.

Along with running for her high school team, McLaughlin was part of a Team USA dream team that set the world record in the distance medley relay at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.

Also at the meet, a team from the New Jersey-New York Track Club — Donn Cabral, Ford Palmer, Graham Crawford and Kyle Merber — broke the world record in the 4 x mile relay in a time of 16:12.81.

14-year-old Jarrius Robinson stealing show, melting hearts at NBA All-Star Weekend

Jarrius Robinson was the star of Day 1 of NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans, including his performance at media day and scoring a bucket on his only shot during the Celebrity Game. He even got interviewed on SportsCenter.

Robinson, 14, has been battling biliary atresia, a liver disease that limits his growth.

As noted by For The Win and explained in his bio on the website of his foundation called “It takes lives to save lives,” he has been through many surgeries. And when he was just 1 years old, he had a liver transplant that resulted in complications that left him in a coma for “close to a year.”

Things weren’t looking good, but then a miracle happened. Per Jarrius’ site: The respirator was taken away. But JJ was not ready to stop fighting. He started to breathe on his own. Doctors couldn’t really offer much of an explanation. JJ’s mom came up with her own: “It was a miracle – nothing but God.”

Jarrius is awaiting another liver transplant. You can donate to help with his medical bills at his GoFundMe page.

Jarrius has become a legend in New Orleans as a superfan of the Saints, who signed him to an honorary contract. So it made sense he would have a big role with All-Star Weekend in town.

Robinson also made headlines Friday as he was sent to do interviews during media day. When Russell Westbrook was a late arrival, Robinson took his spot.

He also got into a fun scrum with Charles Barkley.

Washington, who warmed up in a Kentucky shirt as he always does, was cheered by the Kentucky faithful (even though he was playing for the other team). After the game, he posed for photos with everyone from little kids to senior citizens.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Washington told USA TODAY High School Sports after the game. “The fans were amazing. It feels like home here. I love it.”

The game was a family affair for the Washingtons. Findlay Prep is coached by dad Paul Sr., his brother Spencer is on the team and mom Sherry made the trip.

“I have been watching all the Twitter feeds where everybody says they are driving down four hours or six hours to watch him play. That excites me a lot,” Sherry told VaughtsViews.com.

Findlay Prep faces Tennessee Prep on Saturday evening. Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.), led by Duke signee Gary Trent Jr., and Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix), led by DeAndre Ayton also are in action. Prolific faces Sunrise Christian from Kansas; Hilcrest faces The Rock School from Florida.

Four high school football players from Bishop Moore in Orlando who also happened to be members of the weightlifting team rescued a woman who was pinned under a truck.

Witnesses told WESH.com that a white pickup trick hit Susan Gentry in the middle of a crosswalk. Gentry pushed her young daughter out of the way.

“The tire was on her chest and was suffocating her,” said her husband Mark, who was there.

Bystanders were unable to lift the truck off Susan, but found the four high school players who were strong enough to help lift the truck

“Right place at the right time,” Mario Hernandez, one of the players, told WEHS. “There’s a reason for everything. Feels like a God moment, you know what I mean?”

Mark Gentry says the players “definitely” saved his wife’s life. She remains in the hospital but her condition is improving, he said. She fractured her pelvis and has several bruised ribs.
