DeMarcus Cousins was a big supporter of high school athletics in Sacramento during his time with the Kings in both public and not-so-public ways.

He has attended a number of Grant High football and basketball games. At football games, he generally stood behind the end zone in order to not attract attention but signed autographs and posed for photos with those who asked.

“That was me not too long ago, a high school kid trying to figure out life,” he told The Sacramento Bee several years ago.

Cousins was selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA first team in 2009 at Leflore High in Mobile (Ala.).

Cousins also helped pay for the funeral expenses of slain Grant football player Jaulon “J.J.” Clavo, who was shot and killed hours before a game in November 2015. He wrote “RIP JJ” on his sneakers for the next game. Cousins had wanted the donation to remain anonymous but work leaked.

“It touched me. I’m a parent myself and I couldn’t imagine losing one of my kids,” he said then. “It wasn’t really about me, it was about the family, about the kid. … I was just playing my part. Specific areas I like to reach out to because at one point in time I was one of those kids. I didn’t have a lot of opportunities. … I know exactly what those kids are going through. I’m just a testimony that you can believe in yourself, you can do things. Don’t become another statistic. Believe in yourself. Dream big. Anything is possible.”

Cousins was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans but said that won’t change his relationship with the city.

“Even though I’m gone, it’ll still be the same. You know, I’m still lookin’ out for these kids. Every family in this city matters to me; every soul in this city matters to me,” he said.

In response to the trade, the basketball team at Grant posted a brief video to say thank you for his part with the Kings and in the community.

Mae Jemison (Huntsville, Ala.) has advanced to the regional finals in 5A in Alabama in dominant fashion.

That included a first-round victory against East Limestone by a final score of 77-24 and then a win against Fairfield, 64-49. Next up is Lee (Huntsville) on Tuesday night.

But before looking ahead to that game, here is a look back at dunk show that Jemison put on against East Limestone. Among the star showmen was Jordan Brand All-American John Petty, an Alabama signee who is ranked No. 21 by ESPN and is the reigning Mr. Basketball in the state.

Petty is No. 23 in the video below from MarsReel.

Why 6-8, 400-pound Daniel Faalele is the most intriguing recruit in 2018

Daniel Faalele (Photo: 247Sports)

Daniel Faalele (Photo: 247Sports)

Daniel Faalele has one thing you can’t teach: Size.

He is 6-8 and weighed in at 400 pounds on Sunday at Nike’s The Opening Regional in Orlando, and then showed his strength in a number of drills.

His journey has taken him from Australia to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) — only about 10,000 miles. Faalele took part in a Michigan satellite camp in Melbourne last spring and nothing stays quiet in recruiting.

Without ever playing a high school football game, he has received 14 offers. The most recent came from Florida State after he attended junior day Saturday. He also has offers from LSU, Michigan, Miami, Virginia, Oregon and others.

His national profile also got raised with a lengthy ESPN feature last month.

ESPN national recruiting analyst Craig Haubert saw Faalele for the first time Sunday.

“I was talking to a coach and I look up across the field on the far side and there’s the mountain of a kid. He’s easy to pick him out and he doesn’t disappoint in terms of measurables,” Haubert said. “He could walk into a WWE locker room and not be out of place. He’s that physically impressive.

“Getting the chance to see him take some reps — and that’s a very small sample size — but you can see in that little bit why schools express interest and want to take a chance on a kid with no tangible game experience.”

One thing Haubert notes is that Faalele is “not a physical sideshow.”

“He moves really well,” he said. “Based on what you hear that he can do in the weight room, he has a frame to rework his body composition. You can’t teach 6-7, 375 and he’s probably more than that, but you also can’t teach athleticism. One one rep, the other kid started to drive him back and get into him, but he didn’t panic, slowed him down and was big enough and strong enough to stop him. If you can’t bend and aren’t flexible, being 6-7 can be a detriment as much as a positive.”

Habuert said Faalele still has a “newness” and it will take him some time to learn and get more accustomed to the football atmosphere.

Coming off its sixth consecutive Florida state title, St. John’s Country Day (Orange Park) remains No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Super 25 for winter girls soccer.

MORE: See the full Super 25 rankings

While St. John’s Country Day’s season is complete, action is continuing in other states so the final Super 25 won’t be released until all seven states that play winter soccer are complete.

St. John’s beat Lakeland Christian, 2-0, in the Class 1A final for win No. 44. The program has equaled a school record with 57 consecutive games without a loss.

Only St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) has won more consecutive Florida state titles with seven from 1993 to ’99.

Southlake Carroll (Texas) remains No. 2 despite playing to a scoreless tie against Byron Nelson (Trophy Club).

Out West, Juniperro Serra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) stays at No. 3, heading into a Southern Section second-round playoff game against Los Osos on Tuesday. Serra beat Dana Hills 4-1 in the first round.

Coppell (Texas) remains unscored upon in its 13 victories and is No. 4.

The two newcomers are Merritt Island (Fla.) and Oxford (Miss.).

Merritt Island, ranked No. 9, finished its season at 20-0-1 and won the program’s second state title since 2010. Merritt Island beat Stanton (Jacksonville) 4-2 on penalty kicks for a 1-0 victory in the 3A final.

Oxford finished 19-0 and won the Mississippi 5A state title. The team allowed a total of 12 goals on the season and posted a shutout against West Harrison (Gulfport) in the state final.

With only seven of the top 100 players still uncommitted, USA TODAY Sports has compiled its Composite Team Recruiting Rankings for the Class of 2017.

The composite looks at the rankings from 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout and averages them to determine where each team stands. Teams that were unranked received one more than the maximum listed by each service (51 for 247, 41 for ESPN, 36 for Rivals, 26 for Scout).

Kentucky has moved into the familiar spot of unanimous No. 1, while UCLA is a unanimous No. 2. UCLA was No. 1 after the early signing period. Washington is fueled by the signing of Michael Porter Jr., who is either the No. 1 or No. 2 player in the class. Alabama has made huge strides under Avery Johnson, led by All-Americans Collin Sexton and John Petty.

ALL-USA Watch: Hockey star Jack Rathbone returns from concussion to lead Dexter (Mass.)

Jack Rathbone (Photo: Jennifer Bowman)

Jack Rathbone missed four weeks of the season with a concussion and the frustration was mounting. He was eager to get back on the ice.

In his return, the Dexter Southfield School (Brookline, Mass.) junior defenseman let everyone know he was back. Rathbone scored a power play goal at 1:27 of overtime for a 3-2 win against New Hampton.

“I was a little frustrated from being out for four weeks, but coming back and scoring a goal like that definitely lifted my spirits a little bit,” he said. “It’s always nice to contribute. When you can score a big goal in overtime, it was fun to know you’re back and playing and excited about the second half of the season.”

Despite missing time, Rathbone was selected among the Midseason American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year candidates.

As the regular season nears its end, Dexter is 19-2-3 and ranked among the top teams in New England prep school hockey. Rathbone has 14 goals and 16 assists in 18 games.

But his more complete play in the defensive zone is what has impressed talent evaluators.

“It’s something I’ve been focusing on, becoming a more complete 200 foot player,” he said. “All of my coaches, my dad, anyone who has been helping me playing prep school as an underclassmen and going to practice and going to battle with older guys every day forces me to be become stronger and more detail-oriented in my own zone. That helped me. I owe it a lot to my coaches at Dexter for helping me become as complete a player as possible. My decision making and overall paying attention to the little details in the defensive zone are two of the things I’ve worked on.”

Rathbone committed to Harvard in November 2015 as a sophomore. Among the other options was Boston College, where his father played for four years. Jason Rathbone coaches his son’s midget team, the Cape Cod Whalers.

“He didn’t really give me a nudge,” Jack said. “He loved his four years there and encouraged it because it’s hard not to when you’re talking about one of the best hockey programs and great education wise. I don’t think I could have made a bad decision when it came down to it. I don’t think he was pushing me either way.

Rathbone said he “felt right at home when I stepped on campus in Cambridge.”

“It’s hard to say no when you’re talking about one of the best schools in the country,” he said. “I was really excited to get that opportunity to get that education and play hockey while I’m there.”

After finishing up at Dexter, Rathbone is expected to play a few games for the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL. He did not play in the USHL before the prep school season, instead playing for the split-season Whalers.

He also played last September in the All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on a team coached by former Philadelphia Flyer John LeClair.

“It’s a year-round job — just trying to stay in shape and better yourself every day,” he said. “Even in the summer, you’re in the gym; in the winter, you’re at the rink most of the time.

“It’s a heavy workload, but when you’re doing something you love, you don’t see it as work. You see it as going to the rink every day and having fun with your teammates.”

On the horizon is the NHL Draft, where he was projected as a mid-round pick in the early rankings by the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting bureau.

“It’s on your mind. It’s a dream for every player,” he said of getting drafted. “You try not to block it out, but focus on where you are and play your game for the rest of the season. If you do that, that will all take care of itself.”

Before Chasity Patterson arrived at North Shore (Houston) as a freshman, she wrote down her goals:

“It was definitely to be the all-time leading scorer at North Shore, getting 3,000 points and be a McDonald’s All American,” she said. “Just to accomplish all three of those in my senior year is big for me.”

Patterson, a 5-6 guard who is ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2017, received her honorary jersey for the McDonald’s All American Game on Tuesday when the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance came to her school.

“Oh man, it was a dream come true to (get the jersey) in front of my family and friends,” said Patterson, a Texas signee. “I thank God for being named a McDonald’s All American. It’s just a blessing.”

Patterson’s senior season ended last week when North Shore was knocked out of the playoffs in a heartbreaking 52-51 loss to Clear Falls. “It was sad,” she said.

Her attention now turns to prepping for the McDonald’s game, which is March 29 in Chicago.

“This is the time to really focus on getting in the gym,” she said. “I am in the three-point contest and the game is going to be very competitive. I want to make sure I represent my city and my family well and I’m going to be working to stay sharp.”

Patterson passed 3,000 points in late January, but she and her school wanted her to reach the milestone in a home game. She drew to within 26, which was about her average, but a road game was next on the schedule. She held back and scored 14 in a lopsided victory.

“As we got closer to the mark, I knew I wanted to do it in front of my friends, family and on my homecourt,” she said. “We looked at how many points would I score the game before. It worked out well to get it in front of everybody. It was definitely what I wanted to do.”

Along with the points, Patterson saw her rebounds, assists and steals increase each year of her high school career.

“That all came with part of my role on the team,” she said “I had to make that happen for my team to get where we were and go far.”

And at least one big assist came from dad.

“I have to give props to my dad for pushing me to make scoring, rebounding, assists and all that a big focus of what we worked on,” she said. “He never coached me, but. we definitely trained a lot. I never had a trainer. I hit the gym did with him and did some training with my AAU team. He also did a lot with the mental part of the game and helping me with that.”

Matt Corral, a USC commit quarterback who is ranked among the top pro-style quarterbacks in the Class of 2018, has enrolled at Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) for his senior season, coach Antonio Pierce told the Long Beach Press Telegram.

He is expected to move into the Poly district so he can play immediately. The move also will allow him to graduate early so he can enroll ay USC in January.

Corral confirmed last week on Twitter that he was no longer at Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.).

“I did not get expelled, nor did I punch anyone,” he tweeted. “I ran into problems at a school that is biased towards money. So if you have a lot of it, you run the school. No matter what the situation is. No matter what I say, I am wrong.”

He later added: “Leaving Oaks Christian is something that my family thought was the right thing to do. I am sorry if I offended anyone.”

The 6-3 Corral committed to USC in February 2016 and is ranked No. 2 by Scout at his position and No. 6 overall. He was named the MVP of the U.S. Army National Combine last month.

In leading the Lions to their second consecutive Marmonte League championship as a junior, Corral threw for 3,188 yards and 25 touchdowns.
