The “dream” Final Four in the CIF Southern Section Open Division boys basketball playoffs is happening.

No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) faces No. 12 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) at 10 p.m. ET on Friday with No. 10 and defending champion Chino Hills against No. 13 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) at 11:30.

“The CIF set it up this way and everyone knew it was going to happen,” Chino Hills coach Stephan Gilling told The Los Angeles Times. “We’re there and planning to win it.”

A tournament game in Ohio got out of hand early, and it never managed to get back on track.

Newark (Ohio) jumped out to a 40-0 lead after the first quarter against Hamilton Township, then extended the lead to 64-2 by halftime. The final score: 100-9 in favor of Newark.

The Wildcats are 24-0 and considered one of the top girls teams in the state.

The outcome in Ohio is hardly unique. A game in Louisiana ended 100-5 a couple days ago, while one in Tennessee ended 101-8.

Georgetown commit Tremont Waters honored at Jordan Brand Classic Senior Night

Tremont Waters will have one of the toughest jobs during the Jordan Brand Classic on April 14 at the Barclays Center: Being a point guard.

The best players in the nation will be on the court at the same time. Each is a top scorer on his respective team. That means touches. Waters’ job will be to figure out who gets the ball when and where.

“I’m going to go in and do what I usually do – try to run the show,” he said. “Obviously, everyone is going to want the ball. I want to score when I have the ball and also make everyone else look good by making myself look good, too.”

Waters was the the star of the show when the Jordan Brand Classic Senior Night presented by American Family Insurance came to high school, Notre Dame in New Haven, Conn., to honor him with a banner.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I’ve worked hard my life to be the best person and basketball player I can be. I’m looking to go have a great time and enjoy the atmosphere and play at the Barclays Center. I want to show everyone what I can do.”

The 5-11 Waters is ranked as the No. 9 point guard in the Class of 2017 and No. 38 overall by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He committed to Georgetown in mid-October, several days after visiting campus.

“I’ve been following their season very closely,” he said. “Overall, I like the school, the campus and the coaches made me feel like I was at home. They talked to me about a lot more than basketball. The school really specializes in business. I want to be able to make money outside of basketball when I’m done.”

But a player from Connecticut going to Georgetown, given the long history between the two programs in the old Big East?

I hear it a lot; actually I hear it every day,” he said. “Why didn’t you choose UConn? You should have went to UConn. It’s something you can’t control.”

Sidney Cooks ready to represent at McDonald's All American Game

Sidney Cooks may feel a little bit lonely at the 2017 McDonald’s All American Game.

Perhaps not in the classical sense; but moreso because of her uniqueness: Cooks will be the only girls player from Wisconsin, as well as the only female selection headed to a Big Ten school next season.

“This was definitely a dream of mine,” Cooks said of being named a McDonald’s All American. “I’m the first one out of my city, Kenosha (Wis.), and the only one representing the Big Ten. I just feel like when I go I want to represent Wisconsin good, my city good, and the Big Ten and Michigan State.”

Cooks, the No. 5 player in the nation according to ESPN, received her honorary jersey on Thursday when the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance came to her school.

“My whole school came, so it was a very live environment,” she said of the ceremony. “They were very excited. It was fun. I got to have my family next to me, and it was really just a nice experience to have everyone here with me to get honored for this big accomplishment.”

Though the lone recipient from her state, the St. Joseph’s Catholic (Kenosha, Wis.) star will be surrounded by some familiar faces. But she’s most excited about making her name on a national stage.

“I will be reunited with some of my USA Basketball teammates, so I’m excited about that,” she said. “But when it comes down to the game, I’m just going to leave it all out on the floor and be very vocal.

“People don’t usually expect big basketball players to come out of Wisconsin, especially females, but I think I’m going to represent them very well and just have a lot of fun throughout the game. They’ll know who I am by the time the buzzer goes off.”

As for the future, Cooks sees herself fitting in wherever she’s needed in East Lansing, and she has set some pretty lofty goals.

“I can play positions from the 3 to the 5, so I’ll be versatile,” Cooks said. “Unfortunately, I’m not going to have Tori Jankoska there next year, and I’d love to play with her because she’s an outstanding point guard. But I just want to come in and fill that sport and be a leader as a freshman and just enjoying my time. Hopefully we can get a championship in my four years there.”

The McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance visited La Lumiere in LaPorte, Ind., on Thursday for a rare doubleheader.

Jaren Jackson and Brian Bowen received their honorary jerseys in a ceremony, the only two high school boys teammates selected for the March 29 game in Chicago.

“It makes it more fun for us to be from the same school and playing together on the West team, just like we’ve been playing in school,” said Jackson, a Michigan State signee. “It will add to the excitement. Not many teams get to send two players from the same school to the McDonald’s All American Game so it’s really special.”

Said Bowen, “It means a lot to both of us. We’ve built a great relationship over the year so it’s going to be fun to play on the same team at McDonald’s.”

Jackson is a 6-11 power forward who is ranked No. 16 by ESPN in the Class of 2017.

To finally have his honorary jersey, he said, “was surreal.”

“Every day, its’ getting closer,” he said. “When you get to put on that McDonald’s All American jersey, it’s exciting. It gets your blood pumping and it makes you feel like your hard work has been paying off.”

Bowen is a 6-7 small forward who is ranked No. 12 by ESPN. He remains uncommitted.

“I’m really honored to be able to be in this situation,” he said. “I want to go to Chicago and just have as much fun as I can, live in the moment, have a great time, bond with the guys from around the country and make sure our team wins, of course.”

Who to watch in Pylon Elite 7on7 Las Vegas National

The nation’s largest 7on7 football event is back in Las Vegas this weekend.

The Pylon Elite 7on7 Las Vegas National has attracted 136 teams in the high school division for players who members of the Class of 2018, 2019 and 2020, organizers say. That is up from 120 last year. Unlike other events in which teams are broken up into divisions based on skill level, all 136 teams play in a single division and begin with pool play.

There are 41 middle school teams for seventh and eighth graders, roughly the same as last year, and 21 youth teams, up from 13.

“We are blessed to have young men from around the United States and Canada who believe in their abilities to compete and respect the time and dedication mentors in communities around the world put forth in guiding these young men to our event,” Baron Flenory, the founder of Pylon 7on7 Football said. “We strongly believe in the power of opportunity and provide a platform for athletes to compete and be seen.”

The Las Vegas event is part of Pylon’s National Championship Series, which features regional events and culminates in Dallas at AT&T Stadium in late June.

“The sport of 7on7 football is growing rapidly and we will continue to push forward in development of this sport across the United States and overseas,” said Joshua Borne, the managing partner for Pylon 7on7 Football.

Among the teams to watch are: 702 Elite, Body by Tra, DB Guru, Eat, Fire, FSP, Ground Zero, Frat Boys, Rhare Breed, Team Lillard, Team Texas, Team Utah, Tucson Turf, Winner’s Circle, Yak Elite, Boom, Proway, Zorts and the Washington Raider.

As you can tell by the names, these are club teams that bring in players from multiple high schools within a particular area rather than teams that represent specific high school programs.

Here are 10 players to watch this weekend

Palaie Gaoteote, 702 Elite: Fresh off his commitment to USC, Gaoteote is a five-star inside linebacker whom Top247 ranks as the No. 5 player overall in the Class of 2018. Gaoteote was a key member of the defense for Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) as the Gaels won a third consecutive Super 25 championship. He had 68 tackles as a junior with 11.5 tackles for loss. Among his best games was Gorman’s win against St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in an overtime thriller when he finished with 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

Jaiden Woodbey, Ground Zero: Woodbey from St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) is an Ohio State commit who is ranked as the No. 3 safety and No. 32 player overall, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Brevin Jordan, 702 Elite: We will consider this as entry with the talented QB and pass-catching combo from Gorman. Thompson-Robinson, ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and No. 54 overall, moves to quarterback for Gorman following the departure of Tate Martell to Ohio State. He already has 22 offers. The 6-3 Jordan is ranked as the No. 3 tight end and No. 71 player overall and has 26 offers. He had nine receiving touchdowns as a junior.

Jacob Sirmon, FSP Blue Chip: The No. 3 pro-style quarterback and No. 21 player overall, he committed to Washington in December 2015. He threw for 2,500 yards with 18 touchdowns and two interceptions for Bothell (Wash.).

Braden Lenzy, Team Lillard: Lenzy caps a week in which he committed to Notre Dame after attending the school’s junior day a few weeks ago. Lenzy, from Tigard (Portland, Ore.), is ranked as the No. 10 athlete in the Class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite, although he is projected as a receiver.

Olaijah Griffin, Ground Zero: The No. 9 cornerback and No. 57 player in the nation, Griffin has 12 reported offers, including much of the Pac-12. He attends Mission Viejo High in California.

Elijah Moore, Florida Fire: Moore, from St. Thomas Aquinas, earned an invitation to The Opening Finals last week with his performance at the regional event in Orlando. Ranked as the No. 31 wide receiver in the class, he has 31 reported offers.

Mark Pope, Florida Fire: Pope’s stock continues to rise in recruiting circles and was among the most impressive players on the field at the recent Plyon Southeast regional event near Orlando. He scored a lot of touchdowns and punctuated many with unique TD celebrations. Pope, from Miami Southridge, is ranked as the No. 21 wide receiver and has 20 offers.

Akeem Dent, Florida Fire: A Miami commit, Dent is ranked as the No. 1 cornerback and No. 18 player overall in the Class of 2019, according to Top 247. Dent transferred from Pahokke to Palm Beach Central in July. He was a key player on Pahokee’s run to the state title, although that title was stripped from the school for using an ineligible player.

Eric Ezukanma: As a junior at Timber Creek (Keller, Texas), he scored 27 total touchdowns. He recorded 1,447 yards as a receiver and 383 as a rusher. Texas A&M is considered the early leader for Ezukanma, ranked as the No. 30 wide receiver in the class.

Girls Preparatory School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) athletic director Stacey Hill was arrested Wednesday in an undercover prostitution sting in nearby Dalton, Ga.

According to police, Hill answered an online ad and agreed to meet an undercover officer who was posing as a prostitute. He was arrested, along with seven others, and charged with pandering, which is a misdemeanor.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports Hill has been at GPS, an all-female college prep school, for decades.

The school released a statement Thursday on the matter, saying Hill had been temporarily relieved of his duties.

The GPS administration has recently become aware of misdemeanor charges that have been brought by the Dalton Police Department against Athletic Director Stacey Hill. We are in the process of gathering information surrounding the incident that has been reported. Per school policy in matters such as this, Mr. Hill has been temporarily relieved of his duties, both on campus and off. At the present time, this is a legal matter between Mr. Hill and the Dalton, GA authorities, and it would not be appropriate for GPS to comment further.

WTVC reports that Hill has been released on $2,000 bond.

Mack Beggs, the Texas transgender teen in the midst of transitioning from a girl to a boy, won his first state tournament match Friday morning.

The Euless Trinity standout captured the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 6A Region II girls wrestling title last week when his opponent forfeited prior to the match.

EARLIER: Transgender teen wins regional wrestling title amid firestorm of opposition

Beggs has been the subject of intense media scrutiny all week, but the Dallas Morning News reports his first match was largely uneventful, and he left the mat immediately without speaking to reporters.

Beggs’ opponent, Clear Springs’ (League City) Taylor Latham, didn’t speak with reporters, either, according to the paper.

The UIL’s policy states that an athlete must compete as the gender on his or her birth certificate.

Beggs is scheduled to wrestle again Friday afternoon.

Grandview (Aurora, Colo.) star Michaela Onyenwere wasn’t necessarily a player waiting for accolades. In fact, she wasn’t totally sure she’d be recognized as a McDonald’s All American.

“I was nervous to find out if i did (make it),” she said. “My little brother actually told me. I was really excited to finally be recognized. I think the whole experience will be really fun.”

Onyenwere was honored Friday at her school as part of the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes tour presented by American Family Insurance came to her school.

“It’s a blessing and an honor to be in this position,” Onyenwere said. “I see the people on the backdrop, and it’s just an honor to be recognized with people like Skylar Diggins and Kevin Durant. To be in this game in just amazing.”

Onyenwere, a top-10 player in class of 2017 according to ESPN, will play her college ball at UCLA.

“I’ll have to take a backseat to a lot of people,” she said. “I’m hoping to learn new things about my game and how hard I can push myself. I’m not going into it with solid expectations; I’m just hoping I can produce and I’m excited to be on the team.”

No. 12 Bishop Montgomery beats No. 2 Sierra Canyon in Southern Section semifinals

0

LOS ANGELES — “How ‘bout Jordan!”

Those three words exclaimed by Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) coach Doug Mitchell in the postgame press conference perfectly summed up how the No. 12 Knights upset No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in a CIF-SS Open Division semifinal Friday night at Galen Center.

Jordan Schakel, a 6-foot-5 small forward heading to San Diego State, scored 20 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter as Bishop Montgomery downed the Trailblazers, 70-63, advancing to the Open Division championship game next Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim.

Bishop Montgomery (26-2) will face the winner of the second semifinal between Santa Ana Mater Dei and Chino Hills.

“It’s been a year where Jordan is recovering from injuries and he’s seemed to be getting closer and closer to (being healthy),” Mitchell said. “He missed some shots early, but they were deep in-and-out, and he stayed aggressive.”

Schakel had five points on just 2 of 10 shooting through the first three quarters before he went off in the fourth, at one point nailing three consecutive 3-pointers, including an off-balance leaner to give the Knights a 57-51 lead with 3:08 to play.

“That was probably the most amazing feeling of my basketball life,” Schakel said. “I just had to trust myself, the looks I was getting and follow through.”

Another player Bishop Montgomery was able to trust was one it has for much for the last four years, Oregon State-bound shooting guard Ethan Thompson.

Thompson scored 19 points with 12 of those coming in a strong first half effort for the Knights.

Bishop Montgomery jumped out of the gates with a 13-2 run, capitalizing on the open looks being given by a Sierra Canyon defense on its heels.

The Knights extended their first quarter advantage to 16, 20-4, on a 3-pointer from David Singleton, a basket from Fletcher Tynen and a layup from Josh Vazquez.

The Trailblazers (27-2) were able to settle down toward the end of the quarter, as Marvin Bagley III connected on a 3-pointer to cut Montgomery’s lead to 12, 25-13, at the end of one.

Bagley, who scored three points in the first quarter due to hard double teams from a disciplined Montgomery defense, came alive in the second, scoring eight in the period to help Sierra Canyon pull within seven, 37-30, at halftime.

“We went into the game thinking (the double teams) were going to happen,” Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols said. “We tried to send more cutters through and spread the double team, but they were effective.”

The Trailblazers were effective in the beginning of the second half, going on 13-2 run to take its first lead of the game, 43-39, after a 3-pointer and offensive rebound bucket from Bagley with 3:45 left in the third quarter.

The Knights didn’t panic, however, as Schakel and Thompson managed to settle things down over the last few minutes.

“They did a great job of withstanding our run,” Nichols said. “They made great plays down the stretch and are obviously a very well-coached team.”

Bagley finished with game high in points and rebounds with 28 and 12, respectively.

Mansfield Timberview (Arlington, Texas) star forward Chennedy Carter put on an offensive clinic Friday, leading her team past The Colony, 62-50. Carter scored 38 points and pulled down 11 boards.

“She was just so dominating out there, especially in the first half,” Timberview coach Kit Kyle Martin told the Dallas Morning News.

Carter, a McDonald’s All American, scored 21 of her 38 points in the first half.

A fellow McDonald’s All American selection, Jade Williams, paced The Colony with seven points, seven blocks, and 10 rebounds.

Williams will play her college ball at Duke, while Carter is headed to Texas A&M.

Timberview will face Liberty (Frisco, Texas) in the Class 5A Region II final Saturday.

Kelsey Marshall had 26 points and five rebounds to lead Miami Country Day to an 81-40 win against Providence (Providence) in the Florida 4A girls basketball championship game Friday.

Country Day, ranked No. 7 in the Super 25, won its fourth consecutive state title.  The team is now tied for the second-longest streak of state titles in girls basketball. The record of five belongs to Ribault (Jacksonville) from 1999 to 2003.

The state title also might have secured Miami County Day a spot among the four girls teams in the DICK’S Sporting Goods Nationals in New York. The school won the event in 2015.

Country Day (28-1) trailed early in the first period but closed the quarter on a 12-3 run to lead 22-11.

The Spartans had four players in double figures and shot 58 percent (32 of 55) to overwhelm a Providence (26-1) team that was looking to complete a perfect season.

Country Day led 48-23 at halftime and opened the second half on a 13-3 run to push the lead to 61-26 and start a running clock midway through the third period. The Spartans led by as many as 45 points in the fourth period.

Maria Alvarez had 17 points and eight rebounds while Channise Lewis had 12 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds for Country Day.

Maria Kuhlman had 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Providence.
