Elite 11 finalist Justin Rogers out to compete against the nation's best

Through six events so far, six quarterbacks have been invited to the Elite 11 finals.

One of them belongs to Justin Rogers, a dual-threat quarterback from Parkway (Bossier, La.) who earned his invitation at The Opening Regional event in New Orleans on Sunday.

The Elite 11 finals will be held in June in Los Angeles with the top 11 players earning invitations to The Opening Finals in Oregon in July.

“Getting the invite to the Elite 11 is honestly a dream come true,” Rogers said. “I’m looking forward to competing against the top guys in the country.”

On Sunday, he showed off his arm strength and accuracy.

Rogers, ranked as the No. 11 dual-threat QB by the 247Sports Composite, has 21 reported offers. He narrowed his list to seven in early March: LSU, TCU, Oregon, North Carolina, Tennessee, Louisville and Houston.

He said what has attracted attention is “me being a hard worker and understanding what I’m capable of athletically and mentally.”

Rogers threw for 3,022 yards, 30 touchdowns with eight interceptions as a junior and said these type of experiences only help him get ready for next fall.

Parkway went 11-2 last season and lost in the 5A quarterfinals to Landry-Walker.

“Events like this and others help prepare me mentally for my senior season,” he said. “I know I will have to battle some adversity throughout this journey so this will help.”

Abby Kapp has become the queen of clutch as Boyertown (Pa.) has advanced to its first PIAA state final in girls basketball.

Kapp hit a 17-footer from the top with 1.1 seconds left for a 39-37 victory against Cardinal O’Hara in the 6A semifinals on Monday night.

“I had a feeling,” she told WFMZ. “Sometimes you never know. Sometimes it bounces out or it’s not your night. But my shot went in … and that’s about it.”

She finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

That followed a game-winning three with 17 seconds remaining for a 56-55 victory against Northampton in the quarterfinals.

Girls Sports Month: Mallory Ussery blasts grand slams in consecutive at-bats in California

Mallory Ussery, of Kennedy High (Freemont, Calif.), had one of those days that you can only dream about.

Ussery, a third baseman/catcher, came up to the plate with the bases loaded against Piedmont (Calif.) and smashed a grand slam.

But it gets better …

She came up the plate with the based loaded — in her next at-bat  — and smashed another grand slam.

“It was definitely a unique experience,” Ussery said. “Before that game, me and my teammate, Holly Gonzalez, told each other that one of us needed to hit one out today. We just had that feeling it was going to happen. And in the end, she ended up hitting a three-run homer and I hit two grand slams.
“I guess you could say me and her just had a feeling it was going to be a good day.”

According to CalHi Sports, it was only the second time that was reported to have happened. The other was in 1989 by Chris Barajas from Mesa Verde (Citrus Heights). The difference is that was consecutive at-bats over two games — not in the same game.

Kennedy beat Piedmont, 13-1.

Nine players invited to Under Armour All-America Game for baseball

Jarred Kelenic, who was Team MVP for the U18 United States baseball team that won the Pan-American Games in Mexico last fall, was among the first nine players invited to the Under Armour All-America Game.

The game is July 29 at Wrigley Field and will be broadcast on the MLB Network.

Kelenic is a Louisville signee but could be picked high in the first round of the MLB Draft in June.

Kenosha Indian Trail shortstop Gavin Lux became the first Wisconsin high-schooler taken in the first round of the MLB Draft since 1979 this past season when the Dodgers selected him No. 20 overall. Kelenic has the opportunity to be perhaps the highest Wisconsin high-school player ever chosen.

“We have our college scholarship, so now we’re just trying to get our stock up for the draft,” Kelenic said. “If we’re fortunate to get picked high enough to sign; that’s a bonus. But it’s college first, college is the A plan and pro ball is the Plan B.

“Right now, I’m just trying to get better in all phases of the game. I definitely think it’s quite an accomplishment for Gavin (Lux); he’s a great player, great person. If I’m fortunate enough to get picked as high or higher, whatever the case may be, it’s going to be a blessing. If I keep getting better, I guess we’ll just see what happens.”

Here are the nine players announced:

Triston Casas— IF, 6-4, 240 – American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)

Mason Denaburg— RHP, 6-3, 195 – Merritt Island (Fla.)

Nolan Gorman— IF, 6-1, 210 – Sandra Day O’Connor (Glendale, Ariz.)

Joe Gray— OF, 6-2, 195 – Hattiesburg (Miss.)

Jordan Groshans—IF, 6-4, 188 – Magnolia  (Texas)

Jarred Kelenic— OF, 6-0, 190 – Waukesha West (Wisc.)

Matthew Liberatore— LHP, 6-4, 200 – Mountain Ridge (Peoria, Ariz.)

Noah Naylor— C, 6-0, 195 – St. Joan of Arc (Mississauga, Ontario)

Cole Wilcox— RHP, 6-5, 225 – Heritage (Chickamauga, Ga.)

Less than a month after Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a four-star dual-threat QB from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), announced his final 12, he announced his final seven on Tuesday night.

Thompson-Robinson, ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat QB and No. 50 player overall in the Class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite, is planning a summer announcement.

Thompson-Robinson has spent his high school career, to this point, playing behind star QB Tate Martell, who has since moved on to Ohio State, and being used as a receiver.

Bishop Gorman is the three-time defending Super 25 champion and enters the 2017 season with a 54-game winning streak. Only Kimberly (Wis.) has a longer active 11-man streak with 56 wins in a row.

LaVar Ball responds to LeBron's warning: 'If they get a little touchy about it, who cares'

This may not come as much of a surprise, but LaVar Ball doesn’t seem to care what LeBron James thinks.

Appearing Tuesday on FOX Sports Radio’s JT “The Brick” with Tomm Looney show, Ball reiterated his comments about LeBron’s sons just hours after the Cleveland Cavaliers star asked that he keep his family out of it.

I have no problem with LeBron, they asked me a question about if I thought superstar players’ kids were good. My opinion is I’ve never seen one that’s been really good. LeBron is going to make his kids one of the best players ever according to him.

I’ve never seen one really live up to what their dad has done, so he could be the first. It’s not about me having his kids name in my mouth, I’m not worried about his family. If somebody asks me a question I’ll answer it the way I want to answer it.

The full interview is well worth your time, but LaVar goes on to say that he’s not going to change his ways, no matter who he offends.

“I don’t care, they not going to stop me from doing what I’m doing. If they get a little touchy about it, who cares,” Ball said. “They’re not gonna do nothing to me and I’m not gonna do nothing to them, it’s not a big deal.”

The oldest son of Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and the son and nephew of assistant coach Joey Porter will be subject to a football eligibility hearing by the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Seven players have transferred from Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic following the firing of former Steelers linebacker Jason Gildon in December.

The hearings for Michael Tomlin, Joey Porter Jr. and Amosis Porter are scheduled for May 4.

RELATED: Report says Mike Tomlin, Joey Porter were selfish football parents at North Catholic

“We are bringing Michael Tomlin and two others in for a hearing because the board just has some questions to clear up about the transfer and the timing of the transfer after the coaching change was made,” WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley told the Post-Gazette.

Michael Tomlin transferred to Shady Side Academy after playing football at North Catholic. His younger brother, Mason, was deemed eligible at Shady Side without a hearing because he did not play football at North Catholic.

Joey Porter Jr. and Amosis Porter have transferred to North Alleghany (Wexford, Pa.). The families live in that district. Will Rogers, another of Porter’s nephews, has been granted eligibility because he did not play football at North Catholic.

Lonnie Walker finished with 35 points — two shy of his career high — to lead Reading (Pa.) into the PIAA Class 6A state final.

Along the way to those 35, Walker — a Miami signee who is a McDonald’s and Jordan Brand Classic all-American  — had some pretty moves, as captured by Overtime.

Here are two of them: a dunk and a pretty spin move on a drive.

Reading faces Pine-Richland — a 65-60 winner over Carlisle — in the state final this weekend.

For National Puppy Day, 5 times real puppies got involved in recruiting

When your school name is the Georgia Bulldogs, there are worse ideas than getting an actual dog involved in the recruiting process as we’ve seen over the last few years.

Go back to 2011 when Isiaah Crowell, the No. 1 running back in the class, made his National Signing Day announcement by hoisting a live bulldog puppy for the cameras. The puppy was wearing a Georgia sweater and Crowell nicknamed him mini-UGA, after the Georgia mascot at the time.

While Crowell did don the hat, similar to most signing day ceremonies, the dog stole the show.

“It was my friend’s dog,” Crowell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I figured it’d be a good idea since he already had a dog.”

In September 2015, running back Elijah Holyfield — son of the former heavyweight champion — brought out to adorable bulldog puppies to help make the announcement for Georgia.

In January 2016, Georgia coach Kirby Smart showed up at Alabama commit Tyler Simmons’ house with a bulldog for an in-home visit. Simmons, by the way, would end up flipping to Georgia, although we’re not sure how much credit to give the bulldog.

On National Signing Day in 2016, defensive tackle Michal Carter announced his intention to sign with Georgia with the help of an actual bulldog.

Gus Malzahn is the Auburn coach, and Auburn’s mascot is a tiger. But that didn’t spot him for a dog encounter on the recruiting trail. Malzahn was mobbed by the dogs of offensive line commit Nick Brahms during an in-home visit. The scene made for a cute photo with the coach and Sadie, Harley and Odie.

Nine of the 15 players selected for the 2015-16 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Basketball Teams are in action this weekend in the NCAA Women’s Tournament’s Sweet 16. That includes all five members of the first team.

Three of the players were high school juniors last season so they are not in college yet.

Here are the players, their high school, their college and their matchup:

FIRST TEAM

ALL-USA Player of the Year Sabrina Ionescu, Miramonte (Orinda, Calif.) – Oregon – The No. 10 Ducks are in the Sweet 16 for the first time and play No. 3 Maryland in the Bridgeport Regional.

SECOND TEAM

Kaila Charles, Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) – Maryland – The Terps have been very good from the field in the tournament (55.5% percent shooting). Next up is a matchup with upset-minded Oregon in Bridgeport.

Joyner Holmes, Cedar Hill (Texas) – Texas – The No. 3 Longhorns face No. 2 Stanford in the Lexington Regional and look for Holmes to play a key role on the inside.

Kiara Lewis, Whitney Young (Chicago) – Ohio State – Without top scorer Brianna Turner, the Buckeyes will need to look for other options against Notre Dame in Lexington.

THIRD TEAM

Tyasha Harris, Heritage Christian (Indianapolis) – South Carolina – The No. 1 seed in the Stockton Regional, the Gamecocks face upset-minded Quinnipiac, the No. 12 seed that has ousted Duke and Miami.

It looks like Michael Porter Jr. will get his wish.

A day after telling USA TODAY High School Sports he was seeking a release from the school, a Tacoma News Tribune reporter tweeted that Washington has, indeed, let Porter out of his signed letter of intent.

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the school indicated after the firing of Lorenzo Romar that all signees would be free to look elsewhere. Porter has indicated his final four schools are Missouri, Virginia, Washington, and Oklahoma.

On Tuesday, Washington point guard signee Blake Harris was granted his release.
