A Kentucky softball pitcher almost threw consecutive perfect games, but will ended up with a perfect game and a no-hitter. Only a walk stood in her way, as reported by the Levis Lazer.

Lawrence County (Louisa, Ky.) junior Ciana Bowen struck out 10 of the 15 hitters she faced against Shelby County (Shelbyville) in a 10-0 victory that was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

She then pitched three more perfect innings before allowing a walk in the fourth against Magoffin County (Salyersville) in a 14-0 win also shortened to five innings. After the walk, she finished off the no-hitter and ended the game with 12 of the 15 outs recorded by strikeout.

Bowen, a 5-9 righthander, committed to West Virginia Wesleyan earlier this month.

Four-star QB Cameron Rising flips from Oklahoma to Texas

Less than two weeks after Texas got its first quarterback commitment of the Tom Herman era in four-star Casey Thompson, the Longhorns added another quarterback Saturday.

Cameron Rising, from Newbury Park (Calif.), had been an Oklahoma commit before announcing his decision to flip via Twitter.

He had been in Austin last weekend for the spring game. Thompson alsoattended the game.

“I could feel the energy throughout the entire program — the coaches, players, recruits and fans,” Rising wrote in a long statement on Twitter. “I want to be part of building something special, something historic and know that Texas is the place for me. I truly believe Coach Herman will bring Texas back to the elite status program it is.”

Rising said he was shutting down his recruitment to “focus on academics and my senior season.” After committed to Oklahoma, he had said he would keep his options open.

Rising made the switch on the same day the junior was fitted for a tuxedo for the prom. He spoke with Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, as well as Herman and Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck, by phone.

Rising is the No. 7-ranked pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite.

Rising burst on the scene as a sophomore, when he threw for 3,213 yards, 40 touchdowns and one interception in 2015.

He was offered scholarships by Washington State, Cal, Oregon State, Arizona State, Arizona, Michigan, Louisiana State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Alabama, Miami, Penn State, Texas Christian, UCLA and Mississippi.

Texas, Oregon, Louisville and West Virginia followed earlier this year, despite a junior season limited to five games because of a shoulder injury. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, Oregon head coach Willie Taggart and new Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck visited Newbury Park’s campus in January.

Rising announced his commitment to Oklahoma in August, after a whirlwind six-campus tour with his father Nicko and his grandfather James that included Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Houston, where Herman was still coach.

“My coach, Keith Smith, told me about this feeling I would get when I found the right school,” Rising said. “I thought I found that feeling at the University of Oklahoma — great school, great program, great players, great recruits and great facilities.”

Weekend football recruiting winners: LSU, Penn State, Maryland, Texas

More spring games meant more recruits on college campuses and more commitments. Here is a rundown of the weekend’s biggest recruiting winners.

LSU

The Tigers got three commitments from three defensive players from the same high school in Georgia hours before its spring game. LSU offered all three players on Friday and had reeled them in by Saturday.

Amazingly, that is the second time that Ed Orgeron’s staff has landed three high school teammates on the same defense. The last time was from Evangel (Shreveport, La.). This time, the trio comes from Rome (Ga.).

Adam Anderson, ranked as the No. 4 outside linebacker in the Class of 2018 per the 247Sports Composite, flipped his commitment from Georgia. Jamarcus Chatman, whose 31 reported offers were among the most of any player in the class, is ranked as the No. 11 strongside linebacker. He is among the few players whom Miami was hotly pursuing to get away. Jaquon Griffin is a strongside defensive end recruit.

LSU also got a commitment from a transfer, North Carolina State tight end Thaddeus Moss, who is on campus for his official visit. Moss, the son of former NFL tight end, had six receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown as a freshman for the Wolfpack.

Maryland

Maryland also scored commitments from high school teammates and continued the DMV pipeline with a four-star lineman from each side of the ball from DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.).

Austin Fontaine is a 6-2, 312-pound defensive tackle is ranked No. 7 at his position and No. 69 in the nation.  Evan Gregory is a 6-4, 285-pound guard who is ranked at No. 14 at his position.

Penn State

The Nittany Lions got commitments from a pair of large offensive tackles. Nana Asiedu is a 6-6, 265-pound four-star prospect from North Stafford (Stafford, Va.). He is ranked as the No. 9 OT in the class by the 247Sports Composite. Antwan “A.J.” Reed is massive at 6-5 1/2 and 326 pounds and is a three-star prospect from Muskeon (Mich.).

Texas

California QB Cameron Rising flipped from Oklahoma to Texas and then offensive tackle Reese Moore selected the Longhorns over Oklahoma, TCU and others.

Moore, from Seminole (Texas), is 6-6, 265 and ranked among the top 30 players at his position. He also is the first OT commit for Texas in this class. Moore also plays tight end — although he is projected as a college tackle —  and has shown good speed and footwork.

You can read more details on that by clicking here.

Other commits of note:

  • Georgia got a commitment from the nation’s No. 1 kicker, Jake Camarda from Norcross (Ga.).
  • Miami bolstered its top-ranked class with three-star weakside defensive end Gregory Rousseau from Campagnat Catholic (Hialeah, Fla.).
  • Tennessee also added a quarterback in Michael Penix from Tampa Bay Tech in Florida. Penix is a pro-style QB who had been among the Vols’ primary targets this spring.
  • Minnesota continued to build its class with wide receiver Erik Gibson from King (Detroit). He is a three-star prospect.

Michigan basketball coach resigns because 'parents have taken the fun out of it'

A Michigan high school basketball coach has resigned after leading his team to the regional championship game.

While Clayton Castor wrote that there were a number of reasons for his departure at Gladstone, his main reason — he no longer wanted to deal with players’ parents.

“At the end of the day, the reason why I am resigning is because of parents,” Castor said, according to The Daily Press. “I don’t want to deal with them. The last five years I have coached at Gladstone I have given it my life. My time could have been better spent doing other things.

“I really, really enjoy this. But parents have taken the fun and enjoyment right out of it. Maybe some of this is on me. I just don’t have thick enough skin or the will to put up with it. For that amount of time, it’s just not worth it.”

He also cited a meeting with the booster club that he thought was “out of line” and the suspension of five players for violating training rules that “took the wind out of my sails, but we gathered ourselves back and fought really hard,” Castor said.

In the end, he said: “I have a lot of different reasons why I wanted to resign and only a few reasons to stick around.”

The program had 18 wins this past season, the most since 1996-97, and Castor finished with a two-year record of 29-15.

ALL-USA history: Named ALL-USA first team in 2012

Can surprise opponents with limber, fast lateral movement. Knows what to do, and how to do it when it comes to engaging blockers and locating the action. Violent tackler. Nose for the ball.

Draft negatives: Leverage is a consistent issue with him. Exposes too much of his chest to blockers and will get moved by double teams. Lacks length and it shows up on tape.

What he says, at the Senior Bowl: “I love to hit. There is no better feeling in knowing a running back or a quarterback is doing some suffering with what you just brought. No better feeling.”
