Alston Orji, ranked as the No. 7 inside linebacker prospect in the Class of 2018, has committed to Vanderbilt.

Orji, from Rockwall (Texas), announced his commitment on Twitter following his high school team’s spring game Tuesday night.

According to 247Sports, Vanderbilt inside linebackers coach Chris Marve visited the school earlier Tuesday and watched the spring game. Vanderbilt had offered the 6-2, 225-pound prospect in the fall and he and his family took an unofficial visit in March.

Orji, ranked No. 21 in the 247Sports Composite in the state of Texas, is listed with 58 tackles last season.

He chose Vanderbilt from among 19 reported offers, including Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UCLA and Washington.

The CIF North Coast softball playoffs began Tuesday and defending Division I champion Freedom (Oakley) made a statement in Round 1.

Credit junior pitcher Vanessa Strong for that.

Strong pitched a perfect game in a 7-0 victory against Arroyo and struck out 19 of the 21 batters she faced.

The victory moved Strong to 15-5 in the circle and lowered her ERA for the season to 0.96. She has allowed one earned run in her last four outings.

Washington St. football signee: Recruiting rankings 'can't save you on Saturdays'

Jamire Calvin was a four-star wide receiver at Cathedral (Los Angeles), a U.S. Army All-American and ranked among the top 50 players at his position by the 247Sports Composite.

After a tumultuous recruiting, Calvin signed with Washington State on National Signing Day in February.

With the perspective of being a highly regarded recruit, Calvin offered this on Twitter:

Asked to expound further on the point he was trying to get across, Calvin said.

“I’ve seen a lot of five-star guys and highly ranked guys coming out of high school and then not produce at the next level. A lot of high school rankings come off of hype more than actual talent, and play. And a lot of lower or non-ranked guys seem to do better and prosper at the next level more than the ranked guys.

“Don’t get me wrong some top recruits do live up to the hype, though. Most don’t and that comes to show who’s really good and who was just hype.”

Even before he decided on Washington State, Calvin tweeted that he planned on being a freshman All-American. That tweet from January remains pinned to the top of his timeline.

He still has that among his goals. “I will strive to make it happen,” he said Wednesday.

More than 400 football players in the Class of 2018 have been nominated for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl presented by American Family Insurance.

One hundred players will be selected from among the 400 nominees to the play in the game in January in San Antonio on NBC.

The nominees were chosen by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee, which consists of All American Games, its national network of coaches and scouts, and 247Sports.

At this point, 38 players in the Class of 2018 have publicly identified that they have committed to the Army Bowl. Among them are the top eight players in the 247Sports Composite: pro-style quarterback Trevor Lawrence, strong side defensive end Xavier Thomas, weak side defensive end Micha Parsons, cornerback Patrick Surtain, running back Zamir White, inside linebacker Palaie Gaoteote, guard Jamaree Sayler, offensive tackle Jackson Carman.

A South Florida wide receiver in the Class of 2019 has committed, decommitted and recommitted in the span of about 12 hours, according to 247Sports.

Brieon Fuller from Doral Academy Charter (Miami) announced his commitment to the University of Miami on Wednesday night.

He then decided after talking things over with his mother to decommit about 10 hours later on Thursday morning. In a message to 247Sports, he wrote, “I verbally committed last night to UM [but] after sitting down with my mother my decision has [to] change … I’m opening up my recruitment for other opportunities.”

Shortly thereafter, he posted on Twitter that he was committed to Miami:

As a Class of 2019 prospect, Fuller has plenty of time before he has to sign a National Letter of Intent. Verbal commitments are non-binding so he could change his mind again. Fuller (6-1, 175) has eight reported offers.

He caught five passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in Doral’s spring game.

Mustapha Muhammad didn’t wait for his commitment to post a video. He posted a video on Twitter to announce his top 10.

Muhammad, 6-4 and 235, is ranked as the No. 4 tight end and No. 10 player overall in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Muhammad released his top 10 on the day of his spring game at Ridge Point (Fort Bend, Texas).

To no surprise, the group is a list of college football powerhouses: Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA and USC.

Illinois softball pitcher throws 'perfect' perfect game after no-hitter

Sophomore Jayme Eilers of Sterling (Ill.) struck out all 15 batters she faced Wednesday for a five-inning perfect game shortened by the 10-run rule.

Sterling beat Dixon, 10-0, in the Class 3A Rock Falls Regional semifinal.

The “perfect” perfect game followed a no-hitter in her last outing.

“It was almost all riseballs; I threw a couple of other ones a few times, but I have a lot of confidence in my riseball, and it was really working today,” Eilers told SaukValley.com after the perfect game. “I was pretty relaxed out there – until the last inning, because I knew what I had going. I knew Mallory [Newman] is a good hitter, and I was a little shaky, but I just threw a little harder and tried to get her to swing.”

Newman forced a 3-1 count — the only batter to reach three balls. According to SaukValley.com, Eilers threw 50 of her 61 pitches for strikes. Dixon only made contact with eight pitches — all foul balls, including a bunt attempt.

The tweet includes the audio of the game announcers calling the strikeouts.

Brandon Slater, a 6-6 small forward ranked No. 30 overall in the Class of 2018 by Scout.com, has committed to Villanova.

Slater is the first member of Jay Wright’s class and chose the Wildcats over the likes of Maryland, Miami, Virginia, Wake Forest and South Carolina.

Some recruiting sites have him as a small forward and others as a shooting guard. Regardless, all agree that he is among the top 50 prospects in the nation for 2018.

Slater averaged 15.2 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) and also plays for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL circuit.

“I’m definitely going to have to get better at everything,” Slater told Scout.com. “I can be a better presence, but I can lock up the best player, make the right passes and be the energy guy and do anything else that they need.”

Brandon Roy, who led Nathan Hale (Seattle) to the Washington state 3A title and the No. 4 final ranking in the Super 25, will be the new coach at Garfield, his alma mater, according to reports.

Roy, whose number hangs in the rafters at Garfield’s gym, replaces Ed Haskins, named an assistant coach at Washington State in mid-April. Haskins spent nine years at Garfield, including seven as the athletic director.

Haskins posted a congratulatory tweet welcoming Roy back to Garfield, although school officials have not commented. Roy’s assistant at Hale, Jamal Williams, confirmed the move and said he would be joining the Garfield staff.

Haskins posted a record of 213-34 during his tenure and won the 4A state championship in 2014 and the 3A state title in 2015. This past season, Garfield reached the state title game before falling to Nathan Hale, 68-51.

Roy, the former Washington and NBA star, took over Hale before last season and benefited from the transfer of Michael Porter Jr., the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2017, and brother Jontay. Nathan Hale was 29-0 and spent much of the season at No. 1 in the Super 25, but the team opted not to play in the DICK’S High School Nationals.

Roy was shot April 29 outside his grandmother’s home in Compton, Calif. Roy left a nearby hospital the same day he was treated for the gunshot wound and returned to his home in Washington, one of his family members told USA TODAY Sports after the incident.

Parker Hannon, a 15-year-old from Roswell High in Georgia, set a world record by making 31 field goals from 20 yards out in 60 seconds Friday at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Hannon broke the Guinness Book of World Records mark set by four-time Super Bowl champion Adam Vinatieri during Super Bowl week in February. A Guinness representative was on site and the record needs to be certified.

“Once someone beats it, records are meant to be broken,” Hannon said. “I’ll come back and beat it again.”

Hannon acknowledged he was nervous and hit the tee a few times, but said he focused on blocking that out and going to the next kick.

Hannon was joined by 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Morten Andersen, who was Hannon’s first kicking teacher when he was going into the fifth grade. Andersen said he knew Hannon was special early on and had the determination necessary to succeed.

“It all starts with Morten Andersen, 25 years in the NFL,” Hannon said. “You can’t find a better instructor than that.”

The event raised money for the Pat Tillman Foundation and Kids & Pros, a Georgia-based football development organization.

Before the event, Hannon said the key to his success would be not taking too many steps before each kick to use time. He said Vinatieri often took three steps on his attempts and Hannon thought he could take one.

The genesis of the idea came in March when Parker and his father Jim went out to see what would happen if they tried what Vinatieri did.

“We think he’s one of the best kickers for his age, for sure,” his father, Jim Hannon, said this week. “It was just he and I on a cold night in early March.

“We saw (Vinatieri) kick and watched that video and he was taking three steps. I didn’t think we would have to. We took a video off the phone with a timer so we could tell exactly. We only had 10 balls and he kicked all 10 in 12 seconds. That told me he was pacing 50. We’ve done it a few times since then with more balls. Obviously, we wouldn’t be trying to do it if we didn’t think we could.”
