The 10th anniversary Under Armour All-America Game is scheduled to be played on Thursday, Jan. 4, Under Armour, Intersport and ESPN announced Wednesday.

The game is at Camping World Stadium in Orlando and will air on ESPN2 and 6 p.m. ET.

One of the top high school football showcases, the Under Armour game has featured 160 NFL Draft picks, including 41 first-round picks and 14 Pro Bowlers.

While a number of the players have been selected, the formal Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance will be begin in September.

Organizers also announced the addition of the UA Next All-America Game, which will be played in January in Orlando for the top middle school players. A date has not yet been announced.

According to a news release, “the top eighth grade student-athletes are determined in conjunction with the Under Armour All-America Middle School Camp Series and are comprised of players who have proven their worth on the gridiron and in the classroom. These accomplished athletes represent the next generation of Under Armour All-Americans.”

NFL star turned youth coach Matt Birk: Benefits of football outweigh the risks

Matt Birk, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens and is now a special adviser to the NFL, says “football is under attack” and the game “isn’t going anywhere.”

Birk, who played 210 games in a 14-year career, serves on the board of USA Football is vice president of development for American Youth Football and coaches his fourth-grade son in tackle football.

He told the St. Paul Pioneer Press this week that he sees football’s benefits as far outweighing the risks.

“There’s no question. Football teaches discipline, teamwork, there’s a brotherhood,” he told the Pioneer Press. “People say, ‘Can’t you get that from other sports?’ You can get some of that. Football is unique. Nobody loves blocking people or hitting people, but you do it for the good of the team. I think the things you learn in football are critical.

“Is it for everybody? No. I didn’t start playing football until the 10th grade. There’s a place for everybody on a football team.”

In 2013, Birk announced that he would donate his brain to Boston University’s School of Medicine for concussion research. He said he has three concussions in his career — one in high school, one in college and one in the NFL.

He also was critical of the recent study that showed 110 of 111 brains of NFL players Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

Birk said the study and the reporting around concussion issues are only part of the story and football’s future is not in peril.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “You’re really hearing only one side. Football is kind of under attack in the media. You have millions and millions of people who play football and love it. People are coaching football for free, trying to make boys into men. There are people passionate about football who believe in its power and purpose. Football isn’t going anywhere.”

Citing small roster size, Western New York schools merge football teams

0

Two football teams in Western New York have been granted an emergency merger for the 2017 season because neither team has enough players, according to the Buffalo News.

The season opener is Sept. 1.

The merger of Frewsburg and Randolph was prompted by concern that Freswburg’s roster only had 18 players, including several freshmen and first-year players, Section VI Football Chairman Ken Stoldt told the Buffalo News. The state requires teams have at least 16 players for games. The school does not have a junior varsity team to supplement the varsity roster.

“They were not confident they would make it through,” Stoldt said.

Randolph had 22 players on the roster, which is fewer than most of the teams that they were scheduled to play. The joint team will use Randolph’s schedule of games.

Frewsburg freshmen and sophomores who would have been junior varsity players will be able to compete on the Randolph JV team.

A shortage of players has caused a number of programs around the country to cancel their season or only play junior varsity. The National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations announced in its annual participation survey that the number of high school athletes overall reached an all-time high and saw the biggest year-over-year increase since 2008-09.  However, football saw a decline of about 25,500 players.

Why more college freshmen are playing at QB? Look to earlier development, coaching

0
0

Team such as Alabama, Florida State, Wisconsin and Georgia were among those who used freshman quarterbacks last season in college football.

Whereas at one point it was a given that a quarterback recruit was going to redshirt, that is far from the situation now.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit sees two reasons, and both focus on earlier development at the position than in the past.

Here is what he had to say this week on a conference call:

“The game has changed so much. I think there’s a couple different reasons why you’re seeing it more now than maybe back in the ’80s, ’90s, even 15 years ago. The reason is I think the way quarterbacks train when they’re in middle school and high school is at a very, very different level now. You get a high-level athlete who has changed with a personal quarterback coach, and you get him ready for his senior year. By the time he leaves as a senior in high school, he is so much more polished, and so much more educated on the passing game and reading coverages. It’s leaps and bounds from what it used to be.

“The second thing, I think, a lot of these quarterbacks get in early. They graduate high school early. They get in for the winter. They go through winter conditioning when they’re supposed to be seniors in high school, getting ready for prom. They go through spring football. So by the time they get ready to come back in August, they’re truly, in my opinion at that point, almost a red-shirt freshman.

“So, you take those two variables in my opinion, the development at a younger age, the fine-tuning, the studying coverages, the ability to throw the ball, and you combine that with getting into school early and I think that puts a lot of these guys in position to be able to play and adjust to the speed of the game, which is usually the toughest thing.”

Swastika drawn on field in Georgia; school identifies student responsible

0
0

A swastika was drawn in the morning dew of the football field at Grayson High (Loganville, Ga.) earlier this week and school officials said Friday that they have identified the student responsible, according to the DeKalb Chronicle.

School officials initially became aware of the symbol when a parent sent a photo. In an email to parents, school principal Dana Pugh said the dew had evaporated by the time school officials went to the field and there were no traces of the symbol.

Another photo surfaced Friday and that image included a photo of students nearby. The school administration was then able to identify the students and determine who was responsible.

“Let me be clear,” Pugh said, according to the Chronicle. “This symbol and the bigotry, hatred and terror associated with it is not welcome at Grayson High School.”

Grayson was scheduled to host Hoover (Ala.) at the field on Friday night.

No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas beats No. 3 St. John Bosco in overtime

0

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – It was sort of College Football Lite on a high school campus, and here was a three-play taste in Friday night’s second quarter that explains why.

Re-Al Mitchell, the quarterback for St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and an Iowa State commit, threw two consecutive passes to wide receiver Devon Cooley, a UCLA commit. Both passes were incomplete but only because there was blanket coverage by St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) cornerback Asante Samuel, a Florida State commit.

On third down, Mitchell looked Cooley’s way again, but Samuel was again in tight press coverage, and the result was a sack.

That’s how it went most of the night in a nationally televised season-opening game that was part of the annual GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff.

There were 29 top-300 prospects on the two rosters – most of them on defense – and it showed as No. 5 Aquinas defeated No. 3 Bosco 9-3 in overtime.

“Our defense stayed strong the whole game,” Aquinas outside linebacker Nik Bonitto said. “We enjoy these types of moments. Our defense loves to be on the field.”

Bonitto’s passion for defense was evident. He capped a stellar individual effort with a tackle for loss on the final play.

It was one of many big plays for Bonitto, who is undeclared on college but has been linked to Louisville. Bonitto also had a sack and two other tackles for losses – and all of those plays broke up drives. In fact, one of the tackles for loss was on a first-and-goal run from the 1-yard line.

On the first possession of overtime, Aquinas quarterback Curt Casteel scored on a 1-yard sneak for the game’s only touchdown. Daniel Carter’s 8-yard run on the preceding play, complete with a spin move, set up the touchdown.

The extra point was missed wide right after a bounced snap.

Mitchell nearly threw a touchdown pass on the next play, but Aquinas was able to break it up. And, on a fourth-down flea flicker to Colby Bowman, Bonitto ran the play out of bounds to end the game.

“We have such a benefit to having great coaches,” said Bonitto of an Aquinas staff that includes Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, who is in his first year as a Raiders defensive line coach. “We have been practicing that type of trick play all week, reverses.

“I just happened to recognize it, and I stayed to my job. I made the play.”

Bonitto shared top billing on the Aquinas defense with Samuel, who gave up nothing on passes, set the edge on running plays and had an interception and a blocked field goal.

Aquinas opened the scoring with a 37-yard, first-quarter field goal by Billy McConnell. The score was set up when a deflected Bosco pass was intercepted by Aquinas safety Adetutu Daranijo. Aquinas then reached the Bosco 10, but the nine-play drive stalled when Casteel was sacked twice in a row.

Bosco had a chance to tie the score in the second quarter, driving to the Aquinas 17. But on third-and-1, Bonitto burst through the Bosco line for a TFL, resulting in a missing field goal on the next play.

On the last drive of the half, Bosco had a pair of scoring opportunities. First, Bosco’s Josh Delgado nearly came up with a Mitchell pass in the end zone. The pass went off his hands, but Aquinas’ Daranijo was whistled for interference. Then a hit by safety Jordan Battle broke up a near-completion play at the Aquinas three.

There was just 160 yards of total offense in the first half, including 111 by Aquinas.

After a scoreless third quarter, Bosco tied the score 3-3 on a 25-yard field goal by James Duchesne. Bosco had a first-and-goal at the Aquinas one, making the field goal a bit of a letdown.

On the next possession, Casteel couldn’t get a handoff to his running back cleanly, allowing Bosco to pounce on a fumble 25 yards from the end zone. But Aquinas held again as Battle picked off an overthrown Mitchell pass.

Duchesne had a chance to give Bosco the lead with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter, but his 35-yard field goal attempt knuckled and missed way left.

“We never doubted our defense,” Aquinas coach Roger Harriott said. “We put our faith in our defense.”

Two arrested after gunshot ends football scrimmage in Texas

A football scrimmage in Texas between Cedar Hill and Timberview (Mansfield) abruptly ended Friday night when a gunshot was heard in the stadium.

The gunshot appeared to come from the home side parking lot at Mansfield’s R.L. Anderson Stadium as individuals ran from the parking lot to the stadium bleachers.

Fans on both sides of the stadium immediately fled the stadium for safety. Both teams ran to their respective locker rooms. No injuries have been reported.

According to Fox4 in Dallas, police arrested two men after a pursuit and recovered a gun. The names of the men have not been released.

“I was sitting on the Timberview side and heard a gunshot coming from the Cedar Hill stands,” fan Courtney Capra told USA TODAY Sports. “It looked like people may have been fighting in the stands, but as soon as I could realize what was happening everyone was clearing the field and sidelines and everybody in the stands was running and pushing each other to get to their cars. It was definitely scary.”

Three-time Super 25 champion Bishop Gorman runs win streak to 55 games

0

Three-time Super 25 champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) turned a three-point lead after three quarters into a 35-23 victory against DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) on Friday in the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff.

The win ran No. 4 Gorman’s streak to 55 consecutive games, the second longest active streak in the nation behind Kimberly (Wis.), which extended its run to 58 games with a win Friday night.

“All (the win) means is 2017, this team started off 1-0,” Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez said. “That’s what we worked toward. The past is the past, the present is the present. And just like we do, we’re going to forget about this after tonight. We’ll celebrate and get back to work tomorrow morning.”

DeMatha entered the game ranked No. 6.

UCLA commit Dorian Thompson-Robinson made his much-anticipated debut at quarterback for the Gaels (1-0). He accounted for five touchdowns – three passing and two rushing — and threw for 284 yards. Thompson-Robinson has been a part of Gorman’s success in past years but not as quarterback as Ohio State signee Tate Martell was in that role.

Making the move from wide receiver to starting quarterback, Thompson-Robinson finished the night completing 19 of 25 attempts.

“It’s amazing, having the performance we did, putting up that many points … just to get that first one is pretty good,” Thompson-Robinson said.

Gorman, ranked No. 4 in the Super 25, took a 20-17 lead with 30 seconds left in the third quarter as Thompson-Robinson found Falcon Kaumatule for a 6-yard TD.

Jalen Nailor then showed why he’s known as Speedy as he scored on a 68-yard touchdown recception for a 27-17 edge with 8:15 to go. Then, Jimmy Telles caught a 22 yard TD to push the lead to 35-17 with 4:27 left.

DeMatha would not go away, however, and cut the lead to 35-23 with 1:07 to play as Dominic Lyles reeled in a 7-yard TD pass from Tyler Lenhart.

“I’m definitely pleased with our guys effort today,” DeMatha coach Elijah Brooks. “We obviously ran up against an outstanding Bishop Gorman team. They’re not going to let you make too many mistakes, and we made too many today, didn’t execute when we need to at times, and you can’t do that against a good team like that.”

Lenhart was intercepted twice in the game, by Gorman’s Andrew Ruelas and JoJuan Claiborne. Lenhart finished 11 of 23, including two touchdowns, and 235 yards.

After gaining just 46 yards on the ground in the first half, Gorman’s defense held the Stags’ rushing game to a mere 17 yards over the final two quarters. The Gaels outgained DeMatha 351-298 on the night.

“That’s a pretty good football team we beat,” Sanchez said. “That’s a big physical team.”

Western High (Las Vegas) gets first football win on field since 2010

The drought is over.

Western High (Las Vegas) beat Rancho (Las Vegas) by a 20-0 score on Friday night for its first on-field victory since Nov. 5, 2010. Yes, 2010.

That was a 20-14 victory against Pahrump Valley to cap a 3-6 season.

The program had lost 43 consecutive games since a forfeit win against Shadow Ridge in August 2012.

New coach Tyler Tuiasosopo broke the streak in his debut.

Western had a 20-0 lead at halftime with a 239-57 edge in total yards. Neither team scored in the second half.

The jubilation was apparent in the video below from ScoreStream.

Florida commit Matt Corral shows what all the fuss is about in Long Beach Poly debut

Matt Corral finally got to play in a game that counted for Long Beach Poly (Calif.), and he did not disappoint.

The Florida commit who is ranked among the top quarterbacks in the nation threw for nearly 400 yards on 20-for-30 passing and two touchdowns in a 28-10 victory against Los Alamitos.

“Matt was great,” Poly coach Antonio Pierce told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. “I think Long Beach got to see what everyone has been seeing around the country. He’s the real deal.”

Among the highlights was a 98-yard touchdown to Keon Markham that gave Poly a 21-10 edge.

Corral had a busy offseason in which he transferred from Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) and then revoked his long pledge to USC.

“I’m happy we won,” Corral told the Press-Telegram. “We have a lot of things to work on. I’m glad to know my receivers have my back and they know that I have their back.”

Missouri QB Billy Maples ties national record with eight first-half TD passes

Missouri quarterback Billy Maples tied a national federation record with eight passing touchdowns in the first half and set the state record with nine for the game in Kansas City Park Hill’s 66-35 victory against Lee’s Summit.

According to the record book, eight passing TDs in a half has happened twice before in 1994 by future NFL quarterback Chris Redman and in 2001 by Thomas Thrash in Arkansas.

As reported by 810varsity.com, the eight TD passes went to two receivers: DJ Johnson on scores of 12, 1, 60 and 8 yards, and Ronnie Bell on scores of 31, 24, 25 and 5 yards.

Maples’ final numbers: 434 yards passing on 23 for 36 attempts.

The Mingo Central-Point Pleasant game in West Virginia on Friday night featured four lead changes in the fourth quarter.

The final one was the most dramatic: Last play of the game, 31 yards from Jeremy Dillon to Dawson Elia. Touchdown. Victory.

Mingo 36, Point Pleasant 34.

Mingo’s victory snapped Point Pleasant’s 43-game regular season winning streak.

Dillon had 409 yards of total offense (208 passing, 201 rushing) and accounted for all five of his team’s touchdowns (four passing, one rushing).

Union downs rival Broken Arrow in GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff

Union (Tulsa) took a 17-0 lead and earned a 26-15 victory against rival and host Broken Arrow (Okla.) on Saturday in front of a packed house in the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff.

A.K. Wilson’s 34-yard touchdown run in which he reversed field gave Union at 7-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. Noah Rauschenberg’s added a 37-yard field goal and Keviyon Cooper scored on a 12-yard run for a 17-0 Union lead early in the second quarter.

Broken Arrow got on the board late in the second quarter as Keishun Johnson made an acrobatic catch, but Rauschenberg answered with a 24-yard field goal to give Union a 20-7 lead at halftime.

Broken Arrow then trimmed the lead to 20-15 in the third quarter on a QB sneak from Lafayette Wright, who then scrambled and found Matt Kaiser for the two-point conversion.

After turnovers, Union got field goal from Rauschenberg – this one for 34 yards – to extend the lead to 23-15. He capped the scoring with another FG to make it a 4-for-4 day and set the final margin at 26-15.

Wilson finished with nine catches for 80 yards and ran for 46 yards and the touchdown.

Huntsville (Ala.) city councilman collapses while serving as football official

A Hunstville (Ala.) council member who also serves as a football official collapsed on the field during a game Friday night.

Mark Russell was working the Madison (Ala.) Academy-McCallie (Tenn.) game when he went down with 10:22 remaining in the second quarter, AL.com reported.

He was given CPR by Paulette Berryman, a Madison Academy photographer and cardiac care nurse at Huntsville Hospital. He was treated on the field for 20 minutes and then was transported to the hospital.

Kelly Schrimsher, communications director for city of Huntsville, told AL.com that Russell was alert and talking to family members at the hospital late Friday night.

“Football pales in comparison to trying to save someone’s life,” Madison Academy head coach Grant Reynolds said, according to AL.com. “It happened right in front of us. It was a very scary incident. Fortunately, we had the medical people close by on the sidelines to save his life.”

Saraland (Ala) holds off Heard County (Ga.) in GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff

A 2-yard run midway through the fourth quarter by Rayshawn McAlpine provided the winning points as Saraland (Ala.) beat Hard County (Hartwell, Ga.), 17-14 on Saturday in the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff in Cartersville, Ga.

McAlpine’s score capped a drive in which Stanford commit QB Jack West completed two clutch third-down passes, including a 34-yarder to Jay Williams that moved the ball to the 8. Williams pulled in the ball with an acrobatic leaping move.

The drive also featured a fourth-down incompletion, but Heard County was called for pass interference.

Heard County had a chance to win but a third-and-7 pass was dropped in the end zone, as seen in the video below. Then a chance to tie was lost with 1:14 remaining on a 32-yard field goal attempt that sailed right.

Heard County had scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a short TD pass to take a 14-10 lead after neither team scored in the third quarter.

Despite the best efforts of Ohio State quarterback commit Emory Jones, Heard County cost itself the chance to move ahead earlier. The team took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove inside the 10, but Saraland held and forced a missed field goal.

Midway through the first quarter, Heard County drove to the 13 and then committed four illegal motion penalties to halt a drive.

The game had been billed as a matchup of elite quarterbacks with Jones for Heard County — he also made some big hits on defense — and Saraland’s Jack West, a Stanford commit.

It took a week for this video to hit the Internet, but safe to say it will probably be the first ‘did you see’ that play to go viral for the 2017 high school football season.

Citrus (Inverness, Fla.) running back Rudolph Holton III had his helmet ripped off as he takes off and then continued to the end zone in the Hurricanes’ 27-26 kickoff classic victory on Aug. 18.

Holton told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday that he kept going because there was no whistle so he kept running. The play should have been ruled dead when he lost his helmet.

“They didn’t make the decision to call it back until I hit the end zone,” Holton said.

No. 2 IMG Academy (Fla.) runs win streak to 30 games by beating No. 7 Chandler (Ariz.)

No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) ran its winning streak to 30 games with a 27-14 victory against No. 7 Chandler (Ariz.) in the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff on Saturday.

Running back Trey Sanders had seven carries for 143 yards, including an 89-yard score that gave IMG a 27-7 lead with 11:29 remaining. Noah Cain had touchdown runs of 25 and 13 yards; his second TD have the Ascenders a 20-7 lead with 5:28 left in the third quarter.

RELATED: How the Super 25 fared

Overall, IMG Academy ran for 284 yards on 35 carries for an average of 8.1 yards.

Xavier Thomas, the top-ranked defensive player in the nation, had four tackles, five hurries and broke up two passes. One of those hurries led to a game-ending injury by Chandler star QB Jacob Conover, who landed awkwardly on his throwing shoulder as he tried to avoid being sacked by Thomas.

That took Conover out of his shoulder pads and put his right arm in a sling for the second half, as he watched senior Billy Bolger try to orchestrate the upset.

IMG also made key plays on special teams, including for the game’s first points. Ryker Brazerol returned a blocked punt by Nolan Smith to put IMG up 7-0 early in the first quarter and quiet the crowd of 7,000.

“We had a couple of chances in the red zone two or three times that could have put us ahead,” Chandler coach Shaun Aguano said. “Having Jacob get hurt, that was hard. “I’m happy with how our defense played. They did a good job.”

The Ascenders head west again next Saturday when they face Centennial (Corona, Calif.), in the Honor Bowl in San Diego. Game time is 10:30 p.m. ET.

A California high school football player is in a medically induced coma after surgery to remove swelling in his brain, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Bailey Foley (Photo: provided)

Bailey Foley, from Fortuna High School, was on the sideline late in the season opener at Cardinal Newman when he began have cramps and then having seizures, coach Mike Benbow told the newspaper.

He was taken to the hospital where doctors discovered bleeding on the brain, an indicator of a potential traumatic brain injury. Doctors removed a portion of his skull, a common practice when the brain swells. Doctors won’t know the extent of the injury until the swelling goes down.

“We didn’t know what happened,” his mother, Tara Johnson, told the Press Democrat. “The severity of the seizure wasn’t known until he got to the hospital.”

A linebacker and running back, Foley took and delivered hits throughout the game, but Benbow said the game film does not indicate anything out of the ordinary.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. Here is the link.

The catch of the weekend might belong to RaShawn Williams from King (Detroit). He tip-toed along the sideline in the end zone, reeled the ball in and kept his feet inbounds as he dove.

The result was a 25-yard touchdown to help King pull off the close victory, 38-35 over Indianapolis Cathedral in the final game of the three-day Prep Football Classic at Wayne State.

“It was just a regular run-off route I had until I saw Dequan Finn roll out to my side,” Williams said. “Prior to that, I told him that I had messed up those passes, and it was my bad. I said to just give me another opportunity and he trusted me when we needed a big play. …

“I knew i had my feet in because we work on situations like that in practice.”
