No. 6 Lake Travis (Austin) and Judson (Converse, Texas) combined for nearly 825 yards of offense and 74 points in the first half before Judson pulled away in the second half to record a 65-45 upset in an opener.

Lake Travis used a 72-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Baldwin to Hudson Card to close the gap to 49-38 in the third quarter.

But Julon Williams went 69 yards for a touchdown to push himself to beyond 200 yards and extend the margin to 55-38. That also capped a stretch of three consecutive runs by Williams that went for touchdowns of 22, 40 and 69 yards.

A 1-yard TD by Rashad Wisdom and a 23-yard field goal from Shane King upped the lead to 65-38 with six minutes remaining. Wisdom had a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first half.

Card added a late score for Lake Travis on a 27-yard run to set the final margin.

Things don’t get easier as Lake Travis hosts Steele (Cibolo) next week; Judson travels to Brennan (San Antonio).

No. 1 Mater Dei (Calif.) ends three-time champion Bishop Gorman's 55-game win streak

Does high school football have a new king?

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 1 in the Super 25, beat three-time national champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), 35-21, on Friday night to snap the Gaels’ 55-game winning streak.

Gorman, ranked No. 3 in the Super 25, had not lost since Oct. 4, 2013 against Booker T. Washington (Miami) by a score of 28-12. Among those 55 victories were 18 against out-of-state opponents, including 12 from California.

The Mater Dei win, however, comes with almost an entire season to play. The Monarchs must navigate the difficult Trinity League and the Southern Section playoffs. That path includes challenging meetings at St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) on Oct. 13 and against Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) in two weeks.

Bishop Gorman (1-1) hosts nationally ranked Miami Central and De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in the next two weeks before opening play against Nevada schools.

Bishop Gorman trailed 28-7 after three quarters and seemed to be on the ropes, but the Gaels roared back. Amod Cianelli had a 4-yard run off the right side to cut the lead to 28-14 with 10:41 remaining and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson hooked up with Brevin Jordan on a 49-yard strike with 8:45 left.

But Mater Dei answered – and answered quickly – 77 yards in four plays in 1:32 to push the lead back to 35-21 with 7:13 remaining. Shakobe Harper scored on a 20-yard run.

Harper’s run was set up by a long throw and great catch.

Harper was among the keys for the Monarchs (2-0), who showed more of the run game than usual. Harper rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

In what could be a QB rivalry at the college level, USC commit JT Daniels was 19 for 32 for 315 yards and two touchdowns for Mater Dei. UCLA commit Dorian Thompson-Robinson was less efficient, going 15 for 37 for 334 yards with two touchdowns but with two costly interceptions for Gorman.

Of note, USC coach Clay Helton and UCLA coach Jim Mora were at the game.

Mater Dei opened up a 28-7 lead on a 42-yard interception return by sophomore Darion Green. That followed a 26-yard TD by Cal commit Nikko Remigo from Daniels that capped a three-play, 80-yard drive.

Remigo also had a 20-yard TD catch from Daniels that gave Mater Dei a 14-0 lead with 4:06 left in the first half. Gorman answered with an 82-yard pass play from Thompson-Robinson to Cedric Tillman to cut the lead to 14-7.

Calif. back Skyler Taylor runs for seven touchdowns

La Habra (Calif.) running back Skyler Taylor scored seven touchdowns Friday night in a 45-14 victory against Tesoro — six of the scores came in the first half.

Taylor finished with a career-high 289 yards.

He posted three touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 92-yarder, and three more in the second on runs of 1 yard, 1 yard and 33 yards. His final score came on a 66-yard run in the third quarter. At one point, Taylor scored twice in the span of 75 seconds.

“It was a hard week of practice but we knew we had to come back and win,” Taylor told the Orange County Register. “Give a lot of credit to the O-line and the defense.”

He continued the salute on Twitter:

Here are the longest active 11-man streaks through Saturday morning:

2. Soldotna (Alaska) — 55.

3. Bishop Guilfoyle (Altoona, Pa.) — 48. (plays Saturday)

How is this for a big night? Three touchdowns and three interceptions.

That’s what Nathaniel Bentrup posted for Bishop LeBlond (St. Joseph, Mo.) in a 42-0 victory against Cameron.

On offense, he tallied six catches for 111 yards with scores of 12, 13 and 14 yards, respectively. His three picks on defense all came in the first half.

“We worked so hard in practice of being in the right place at the right time,” Bentrup told the St. Joseph News Press. “It’s good coaching.”

Here are highlights of Bentrup in action from last season:

Cagan Campbell was the Alabama 6A state champion in the 60 meters and the 400 meters last spring on the track. Last January, he ran what at one point was the fastest time in the country in the 400 indoors at 47.64 seconds.

So, we know Campbell is fast.

Translate that into football speed and watch as the Hillcrest (Tuscaloosa) senior races untouched for an 84-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff Friday night, although Oak Mountain edged a rallying Hillcrest 28-27.

In what might be the first play of the year candidate, the freshman football team from Xenia (Ohio) returned a kickoff for a touchdown after an amazing five laterals.

Xenia recovered the dribbling kick against Troy at its 30-yard line and then you have to see the video to believe it before Markus Allen emerges with the ball and goes 45 yards for the score.

That left Xenia trailing 44-42 and having to go for the two. Alas, the conversion failed and Xena lost, but what a play.

No. 2 IMG Academy (Fla.) downs No. 9 Centennial (Calif.) in Honor Bowl rematch

No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) traveled west and beat a top 10 opponent for the second consecutive week, downing No. 9 Centennial (Corona, Calif.), 40-20, in the featured game Saturday at the Honor Bowl in San Diego.

The Ascenders’ winning streak now stands at 30 consecutive games after the victories against then-No. 7 Chandler (Ariz.) and Centennial to start the season.

Saturday night’s game was a rematch of IMG’s thrilling 50-49 victory in last year’s Honor Bowl, but this game was not as close.

Centennial (0-1) was hampered by injuries to starting quarterback Tanner McKee, one of the nation’s best who injured an ankle in the first quarter, and backup Ala Mikaele, who was taken off the field on a stretcher after a helmet-to-helmet hit in the second quarter.

Senior Arturo Herrera, who switched to receiver this season after serving as McKee’s backup last season, then moved back to QB.

Herrera helped rally Centennial and a field goal cut the deficit to 26-20 in the fourth quarter. That’s when a pair of long runs from Trey Sanders put the game out of reach. He went 75 yards with 6:38 to play and then 65 yards a few minutes later to set the final margin.

Bookie Radley-Hiles, returning to his native California, was named game MVP for IMG thanks to his two interceptions. Quarterback Artur Sitkowski was named the Character Award recipient.

For Centennial, the Character Award went to Herrera for switching positions. The MVP went to Thomas Kinslow, who had a pair of rushing TDS and 134 yards on the ground.

IMG plays its home opener net week against St. Frances Academy (Baltimore), a rematch of a game the Ascenders won 38-0 last season. Centennial faces Etiwanda and will await further evaluation as to whether McKee will be available to return.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), ranked No. 6 in the Super 25, beat Garces Memorial (Bakersfield), 63-0, on Saturday night. The Braves scored touchdowns five different ways.

Check out this slalom run for a score by Iowa State quarterback commit Re-al Mitchell, who changed directions and then changed directions again and again to get to the end zone.

Mitchell had three carries for 28 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He was 7-for-7 for 116 yards and a TD through the air.

Kemmerer (Wyo.) became the latest school with a long losing streak to break into the win column.

Kemmerer, a 2A program, downed Saratoga 34-0 to snap a state-record 36-game regular season losing streak. The program’s last win was on Sept. 28, 2012.

Kemmerer got on the board early with a safety after a penalty in the end zone and then scored two plays after the free kick. The score remained 8-0 at halftime, but Kemmerer turned it on the second half for the victory.

The program has a new head coach this season in Bart Jernigan, who lost his debut but now has the team in the win column.

VIDEO: Arizona team completes Hail Mary for thrilling eight-man victory

How about a game-winning Hail Mary in eight-man football in Arizona?

Well, we have it for you right here.

Williams High was leading 24-22 with seven seconds remaining. Bagdad had the ball and needed a miracle finish to win the game in a rematch of the 1A state title game last fall that Bagdad won 60-6.

No problem.

Senior quarterback Israel Loveall launched a deep pass that Scott Finnerty somehow caught between three defenders and ran into the end zone to pull out an improbable victory.

“I think I might have been the ninth guy to the end zone in celebration as we stole a victory against a very solid Williams Vikings team,” coach Dalton Mills said.

With a 24-22 lead, Williams drove into Bagdad territory in the final minute. Bagdad created a fourth-and-eight situation. Williams faked a punt and was stopped short of a first down.

But Bagdad had only seven seconds to pull a miracle.

A screen pass to Rio Delgado went for eight yards. He got out of bounds with  2.6 second left on his 43-yard line. That’s when Loveall launched the long pass that will be talked about in 8-man circles for a long time.

Michigan QB accounts for 9 touchdowns, 64 points in game

Have a day, kid!

Zack Pickens of Watervliet (Mich.) accounted for nine touchdowns — he threw for five touchdowns and he ran for four more — in a 72-36 victory against Buchanan.

He score 64 points, which is third all-time, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association record book. And you have to go back to 1914 and 1920, respectively, to find the two players who had 66.

Pickens’ totals: 358 yards passing on 12-for-19; 138 yards rushing on 21 carries.

The nine touchdowns in a game ties him for fifth in state history, but again, you have to go back a long way. The most recent player to score nine or more was Francis Tallent in 1929 for Menominee.

“We weren’t doing anything special, just playing and trying to score as many touchdowns as we can,” Watervliet coach Jeremy Andrews told the Herald Palladium. “The quarterback is the focal point in our offense.”

Note: This story was originally published in October of 2015. Republished Friday for obvious reasons.

In what would have been one of the biggest recruiting shockers ever, five-star Rawle Alkins tweeted Friday that he had committed to the University at Buffalo.

A tweet from Alkins’ account read, “Proud to say that I have Committed to play my college basketball at the University of Buffalo #GOBULLS.” In the photo that appears to be Alkins, he is shown with a Buffalo backpack and has a blue dot after the hashtag.

As would be expected, the reaction was, “Wait, what?”

Tweets from two recruiting website said that Alkins was “joking around” on Twitter and just messing with everyone.

Later, Alkins tweeted that his friends at school had grabbed his phone and he had not committed to Buffalo.

Alkins, who is from Brooklyn, is playing for Word of God Christian in North Carolina this year and has offers from Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina and St. John’s, among others.
