SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) transfer Marvin Bagley III was on the bench but not in uniform at the Hoophall Classic on Monday.

The 6-11 Bagley is waiting to see if he will be ruled eligible by the CIF Southern Section after transferring from Hillcrest Prep in Arizona.

“We’re hoping to hear by next week,” Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols said. “It’s just a matter of the CIF making the home visit to make sure the move was legitimate. They’re treating him like any other kid who’s transferring and there’s something like 512 school districts in the state, so it takes time. We were hoping he would be eligible for this week.”

Bagley is ranked as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2018 by most recruiting services and moved to Southern California in late December.

After he left Hillcrest in mid-November, he was taking NCAA-approved online courses in order to stay on track academically. Hillcrest Prep basketball program director Matt Allen said he recently sent a letter to the CIF in support of Bagley.

Bagley led Tempe Corona del Sol to a state championship last season as a freshman but transferred when Hillcrest hired his father as an associate coach.

If he becomes eligible, Bagley would join Nevada signee Devearl Ramsey and a top 60 junior in forward Cody Riley. Ira Lee, ranked as the No. 34 junior, recently left the program.

Waco Midway head football coach Terry Gambill was named the new coach at Allen (Texas) on Monday night, filling the state’s most substantial offseason vacancy.

Gambill returns to Allen, where he served as an assistant coach for nine seasons and was the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator in 2008 for an Eagles team that won a state title.

At Midway since 2010, Gambill posted a 67-13 record and took his team to the state finals in 2011. Midway was 9-4 in 2015.

Gambill also will be assistant athletic director at Allen. Gambill told David Smoak of ESPN: “The transition will be much easier because I know the Allen program, tradition, what they stand for and it won’t take me long to learn what’s taken place since I left 6-years ago.”

“Allen is best program in state of Texas and no one plays high school football like this state, I wouldn’t have left Midway if it wasn’t best.”

He issued a statement via Twitter to the Midway community:

Smoak reported last week that there were four finalists to replace Tom Westerberg, who resigned earlier this month to go to Barbers Hill outside of Houston. He will serve as head football coach and athletic director.

The others were current Allen defensive coordinator Cory Cain, San Antonio Brandeis head coach Jeff Fleener, and Rockwall head coach Rodney Webb. Fleener also was a former Allen assistant.

Westerberg left after leading Allen to four Texas state titles in the state’s biggest classification.  Westerberg’s record was 148-15 at Allen.

Georgia defensive linemen Derrick Brown and Antonneous Clayton vaulted into the Top 10 in the final ESPN football recruiting rankings for the Class of 2016.

Brown, an uncommitted defensive tackle from Lanier (Buford) is ranked at No. 9 and also added a fifth star. Clayton, an end from Dooly County (Vienna), is No. 10 and has committed to Florida.

“He had an outstanding senior season and getting a chance to see him practice at the Army Bowl, it really just solidified that he deserved to make that jump,” ESPN national recruiting analyst Craig Haubert said in a segment posted on ESPN.com. “He has outstanding size as well as initial quickness.”

RELATED: Full ESPN 300 rankings

Brown was named the American Family Insurance Defensive Player of the Year and the Anthony Munoz Lineman of the Year during the Army Bowl awards.

ESPN had only nine five-stars in this class.

Haubert pointed to Clayton’s size and his performance at the Under Armour All-America Game as reasons for the jump.

“He’s begun to fill out some,” Haubert said. “He had a tremendous first step throughout the Under Armour practices all week. He was constantly disruptive. He was dominant in the one-on-ones and he also showed that in the game. He’s a high upside player.”

At Florida, Clayton will join defensive tackle Shavar Manuel from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), who committed in the days after the Under Armour All-American Game.

At No. 1 overall, defensive tackle Rashan Gary from Paramus Catholic in New Jersey went wire-to-wire, finishing where he began.

Gary leads a deep and talented class of defensive tackles. Four of the top seven players in the class, according to ESPN, are defensive tackles. Houston commit Ed Oliver (Westfield; Houston) is No. 4; Clemson commit Dexter Lawrence (Wake Forest, N.C.) is No. 6 and Ole Miss commit Benito Jones (Wayne County High; Waynesboro, Miss.) is No. 7.

Behind Gary is Ole Miss commit offensive tackle Greg Little from Allen, Texas. Ohio State commit defensive end Nick Bosa (St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale) is No. 3, followed by Oliver and Florida State commit cornerbacks Levonta Taylor (Ocean Lakes; Virginia Beach, Va.).

After Lawrence and Jones is Georgia-committed tight end Issac Nauta (IMG Academy) at No. 8 before Brown and Clayton round out the top 10.

Georgia early enrollee Jacob Eason (Lake Stevens, Wash.) is the top quarterback at No. 13, edging out Shea Patterson, an Ole Miss early enrollee from IMG who is ranked as No. 15.

In all, 69 prospects in the ESPN 300 moved at least 30 places with more than half of them moving upward.

Among the biggest movers was outside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch, from Davis in Aldine, Texas. He has moved from No. 299 to inside the top 100 to No. 26 in the final rankings.

“We love the combination of athleticism and smarts,” Haubert said. “He is someone who can anchor a defense.”

ESPN also has a new No. 1 wide receiver in Arizona State commit N’Keal Harry from Chandler, Ariz. He also bursts into the top 25 at No. 22.

“He has an outstanding combination of size and speed,” Haubert said. “He has tremendous body control. He’s really just a playmaker. Get the football near him and Harry will come down with it.”

The players in the McDonald’s All American Game will be honored before they even get to Chicago for the annual showcase of the game’s best – and that recognition will come in their hometowns.

For the first time, McDonald’s All American Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance will travel the country recognizing the 24 boys selected to the game with a special press conference event. The event will include a jersey presentation, award ceremony and media interviews.

The athletes will get to share their success with family, friends, coaches, teammates and members of their school and community.

“For 39 years, the McDonald’s All American Games have celebrated the nation’s top high school talent – now the hometown of each of these athletic heroes will have the opportunity to join in that celebration thanks to the support of American Family Insurance,” according to a news release announcing the inaugural selection tour.

The first stop is scheduled for Tuesday with events continuing through late February. The McDonald’s All American Game is March 30 at the United Center at 9 p.m. ET. The game will be shown on ESPN.

Texas had the most All Americans with five while California and Florida had three apiece. Thirteen of the 24 players were selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA preseason team in November.

“It takes a special talent to be recognized as a McDonald’s All American.Earning that distinction can be an unparalleled source of joy for not only the player, but also for the friends, family and community that have loved, supported and mentored him every step of the way,” the news release said. “The feeling of representing those who have guided each All American will help support him in his future aspirations, while those in his hometown – young and old – will beam with the pride that, ‘He’s one of ours.’ ”

With the four major recruiting services having released their final rankings for the 2016, USA TODAY High School Sports has compiled a final update to the composite rankings.

The rankings reflect the average of 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout. The lower the number, the better the ranking. Players who are not ranked by a particular service receive the maximum number for that service: 247 for 247, 300 for ESPN, 250 for Rivals and 300 for Scout.

To no surprise, Paramus (N.J.) Catholic defensive tackle Rashan Gary is the No. 1 player. Gary was a unanimous choice among the four ranking services. Wake Forest (N.C.) defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is second; he was ranked as the No. 2 player in three of the four.

This page will be updated as players commit in advance of National Signing Day on Feb. 3

Official recruiting visits meet the Blizzard of 2016.

With blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall expected through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, the potential exists for football recruits to get stuck in transit or need to remain beyond the NCAA mandated 48-hour window.

The University of Virginia, with the possibility of two feet of snow in Charlottesville, has called off its visitors weekend and is hoping those recruits will come to campus next weekend.

National Signing Day is Feb. 3 so this weekend and next weekend are the last chances for schools to bring recruits to campus.

The NCAA has legislation in place for situations where the recruit needs to remain in the locale of college beyond the 48 hours for “reasons beyond the control of the prospective student-athlete and the institution (e.g., inclement weather conditions, natural disaster, flight delays or cancellations, airport security activity).” The school is required to submit a report to the conference detailing the circumstances.

If the recruit is delayed while traveling because of the weather, the school can play for any travel expenses, meals and lodging occurred to or from the official visit.

An NCAA waiver is not required in either case. A spokesman said the organization has staff on standby to assist schools with any issues or questions related to the blizzard.

Texas sophomore Angel Hastings scores 48 of her team's 58 points in victory

Sophomore Angel Hastings is putting up big numbers for George Gervin Academy in San Antonio, the kind that would make the legendary “Iceman” proud.

The amazing part of the stat line is the percentage of her team’s points that she is scoring.

Hastings scored 48 points Friday night in a 58-39 victory against Brackett. Four other players combined for the remaining 10 points.

Earlier last week, she had 41 points in a victory.

In a tournament game in December, she scored 36 of her team’s 43.

Hastings will be one to watch as she continues to put up big numbers.

What is being dubbed the “Game of the Year” in California is a week ago as Chino Hills vs. Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) at Ceritos College on Jan. 30.

As it stands, Chino Hills is ranked No. 1 in the Super 25 and Bishop Montgomery is ranked No. 12.

But before that game, Chino Hills (19-0) continued its perfect season Friday night against Damien (La Verne), and it was another amazing stat line for McDonald’s All American Lonzo Ball.

The UCLA signee had 32 points, 16 rebounds, 15 assists, three steals and three blocks, according to the San Gabriel Valley News. A tweet about the game read, Lonzo Ball goes nuts in Chino Hills’ 92-65 win over Damien.

Lonzo Ball’s versatility is a big reason many point to him as a candidate for the nation’s best player.

Among the many highlight plays of the night was this one:
