Not many people get the key to their city, let alone a high schooler.

But Kysre Gondrezick got that honor this week in Benton Harbor, Mich., when she was recognized at a city commission meeting and received multiple standing ovations.

The 5-9 basketball star became the first Benton Harbor player to win Miss Basketball, given by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and the Detroit Free Press annually since 1981. She also won the Gatorade State Player of the Year.

In voting for the award, she more than tripled the first-place votes of runner-up Mardrekia Cook. She totaled 4,887 points, Muskegon’s Cook had 2,900 and third-place finisher Alexis Sevillian of Goodrich had 2,245 points.

A Michigan signee, Gondrezick averaged 40.5 points per game as a senior and set the state’s single-game record when she poured in 72 in an 80-72 double overtime victory against Buchanan.  She scored 851 points this season, second only to Michigan State redshirt senior Jasmine Hines, who scored 935 points for Central Lake in the 2009-10 season.

Gondrezick’s career total of 2,827 points also is second to Hines (3,034).

“I just wanted Benton Harbor to be good again,” Gondrezick told the packed house, according to WSJM.

She will suit up one more time as a high schooler for the West team in the Jordan Brand Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 15.

Colquitt County, No. 2 in the final Super 25 football rankings last fall, is losing nearly 20 starters, but the program also has lost both its coordinators and several other assistants.

The Packers, who are riding a 30-game winning streak, will be without many of the stars of its high-powered offense with the graduations of quarterback Chase Parrish, running back Kiel Pollard and wide receiver Ty Lee, as well as defensive standouts Rakeem Hightower, Ja’Quain Blakely and Dee Walker.

Coach Rush Propst has announced a number of staff changes, including a replacement at defensive coordinator, but still has a number of spots to fill, according to a report from the Moultrie Observer.

Outside linebackers coach Bubba Walker will move to defensive coordinator next season. He replaces Jeremy Rowell, who has taken a position as secondary coach at Georgia Southern. Walker joined the Colquitt staff last season after having been the defensive coordinator at Valdosta State.

Steve Figueroa, who played for Propst at Hoover (Ala.) will move from the ninth-grade staff to coach the safeties. Defensive line coach Courtney Sanders  and cornerbacks coach Dextra Polite remain. Colquitt is looking for an inside linebackers coach following Grangers Shook’s departure to become defensive coordinator at Prattville (Ala.).

The offensive staff has lost coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sean Calhoun, inside receivers coach John Cooper and outside receivers coach Josh Crawford. Calhoun, who spent two years at Colquitt and was named offensive coordinator last fall, has been named the head coach at Carrollton (Ga.), and Cooper will be his coordinator, according to the Moultrie Obsever. Crawford has been named offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Morehouse College.

Evan McKissick, another former player for Propst at Hoover, has been moved from the ninth-grade staff to coach tight ends, inside receivers and H-backs.

Propst told the Observer that he plans to add two more offensive coaches on the varsity and add four more coaches to the ninth-grade staff.

As has been reported previously, Colquitt will host American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) on Aug. 27. The remainder of its non-league games are against Mill Creek, Tucker, Roswell, Brookwood and Valdosta. The game against Roswell is a rematch of the AAAAAA state title game.

Colquitt currently has nine games on its schedule with the possibility of a 10th. Propst said Bessemer City (Ala.) has opted against playing in Moultrie the next two seasons, opening up a slot for another game.

In the aftermath of a Little League in Pleasanton, Calif., posting what might be the most perfect sign ever for obnoxious sports parents, we thought we’d add to the conversation with the interview above with Jim Delaney by Tampa TV station WFLA.

Delaney is the director of recruiting for Recruit Look, a company that helps high school athletes get noticed by colleges.

“Parents just need to be fans in the stands talking with the coaches, supporting them and not talking about the sport very much,” he says. “Let them initiate the conversation.”

Talk about drama … Juneau Douglas made the Alaska state title game with a buzzer beater in the semifinals, a night after advancing with a game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds left.

On Friday, Ketchikan made a three-pointer with 9 seconds left to tie the game.

Kaleb Tompkins, a second-team all-state player, then took the game in his own hands, dribbling the length of the floor and looking for a good shot. He almost lost the ball in the backcourt before recovering. He then drove into the lane, backed out a few feet, and floated in the game-winner with two seconds left for a 42-40 victory.

Tompkins finished with a game-high 22 points.

Here is how it looked:

The night before, Juneau Douglas trailed against Bartlett the entire game until the final horn.

Sophomore Kolby Hoover nailed a deep field goal with 1.7 seconds left for the 58-57 victory. Douglas had trailed 57-53 when Tompkins hit a three-point to cut the lead to one. Bartlett then missed the front end of a one-and-one. Tompkins got the rebound, found Hoover with a long pass downcourt for the game-winner.

Juneau Douglas takes on Dimond on Saturday for the crown.

We have shown you plenty of dunks from Harvard-Westlake freshman Cassius Stanley during the season — all of which have generated oohs and aahs.

Harvard-Westlake dominated Palma (Salinas, Calif.) with a 66-49 victory in the CIF Division IV final on Saturday at Sleep Train Center in Sacramento.

Here is a dunk on a lob pass in the third quarter. He actually went so high that he hit his neck on the bottom of the backboard but still corralled the ball, put it through and then went to the free throw line after the foul.

“It was amazing,” Stanley said, via The Los Angeles Times. “It was everything everyone dreams of, dunking in an NBA arena.”

“I saw it was so high it was either going to end badly or well. I think it ended well.”

The Virginia men’s basketball team is playing for a spot in the Final Four on Sunday in Chicago.

And while that is today’s No. 1 priority, the Cavaliers will have plenty to look forward to for next year with the addition of Kyle Guy.

Guy, a 6-3 combo guard from Lawrence Central (Indianapolis) will be in Chicago on Sunday as he arrives in town for the start of the festivities surrounding the McDonald’s All American Game. The players are scheduled to visit a Ronald McDonald’s House in Chicago on Sunday afternoon and then visit the historic Chicago Theatre, site of Monday’s Powerade JamFest events.

Guy is the 11th University of Virginia player to be named a McDonald’s All American and the first in eight years. He also was named the Gatorade Indiana State Player of the Year.

Top Mississippi State recruit apologizes for video allegedly showing him striking woman

Jeffery Simmons, the top-rated signee in Mississippi State’s 2016 recruiting class, allegedly struck a woman several times on Thursday, according to a WCBI report.

The report cites a video that appears to show Simmons, a top five defensive end from Noxubee County (Miss.) who was considered the state’s best recruit, hitting a woman on the ground several times. Simmons was set to enroll at Mississippi State this summer.

Mississippi State has not commented on the incident, and coach Dan Mullen did not return multiple requests for comment from Gannett partner The Clarion Ledger in Jackson on the situation.

Simmons posted an apology on his Facebook account to the Taylor family and specifically Sophia Taylor. The Clarion-Ledger hasn’t confirmed that the apology is tied to the alleged assault. The apology has since been deleted, but here is the text:

“Where do I start? Where do I begin? Wow! Decisions, choices, and actions should always be carefully thought through when incidents occur. I take full responsibility for my actions that occurred on Thursday evening. My apology goes out to the Taylor Family and especially to Sophia Taylor.

“What was I thinking? Honestly, I wasn’t thinking, all I could think was this is my family and I am supposed to defend my family. Many know my deceased nephews were my pride and joy, I do everything I do in honor of the life they never got the chance to live, and to listen to someone speak to terrible about them really caused me to make choices, decisions and act in a manor (sic) that was out of character for me. Is that an excuse?… NO!

“I truly hope that you will find it in your hearts to forgive me for my actions. I want to apologize to those that have supported me, those who look up to me and those who I consider family. I hope that each of you will accept my apology. I was raised in church, I’ve asked for forgiveness and I pray for God’s continued guidance as I move forward in becoming a better person.”

The police in Macon, Miss., are aware of the incident but charges have not been filed and the police have not commented.

Chino Hills (Calif.) has completed its perfect season and solidified its spot atop the USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25.

The Huskies (35-0) beat De La Salle (Concord), 70-50, for the CIF State Open Division title Saturday in Sacramento, punctuated by its usual high-flying end-to-end style and key performances by the UCLA-bound Ball Brothers.

Because the CIF does not allow its teams to play beyond the state championship, Chino Hills will not take part in the DICK’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals in New York this week.

The immediate aftermath spurred conversation about whether this Chino Hills team is the best in California, especially after playing a tough schedule that included the City of Palms Classic in Florida and an appearance at the Spalding HoopHall Classic in Massachusetts beyond a difficult run of teams in Southern California. Most of those games include lopsided margins.

Whether or not, Chino Hills is the best ever or the best in recent memory, the Huskies were the best this season.

“During the playoff round, everything came together for us,” Chino Hills coach Steve Baik told USA TODAY Sports. “We beat a lot of good teams by a considerable margin because of the way we played defense.”

RELATED: With three brothers and a cousin, a whole new Ball game for Chino Hills

That challenge included a rare halftime deficit as De La Salle slowed the pace and led 30-28 after taking a 19-9 lead. This against a Chino Hills team that tied the state record with 18 games of 100 points or more.

“The biggest thing at the half is Lonzo got on his teammates for not really playing with energy,” Baik said. “Plus, our center was not playing up to par. In the second half, he did what he was supposed to do in the first half.”

Lonzo Ball and the Huskies opened the second half with a 15-2 run and outscored De La Salle 19-5 in the third quarter. The Huskies also held De La Salle (31-3) to 25 percent shooting in the second half after the Spartans hit at a 50 percent clip in the first half.

For Chino Hills, senior Lonzo Ball had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists. LaMelo Ball had 14 points. LiAngelo Ball had 18 points. Eli Scott added 16 points and eight rebounds and Onyeka Okongwu had seven points, nine rebounds and blocked five shots.

With the state and national titles in hand, Lonzo Ball heads to Chicago on Sunday for the McDonald’s All American Game.

It wasn’t just a good weekend for the Final Four-bound Oklahoma basketball team.

The football team had a pretty good Sunday, getting verbal commitments from two four-star receivers from Texas seemingly within minutes.

First, Jalen Reagor from Waxahachie announced his commitment. Reagor, 5-11, 182, committed days after an unofficial visit to the Norman campus on Friday. Reagor is ranked among the top 50 receivers in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings and has been timed at 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Next was Cedar Hill’s Charleston Rambo, who is ranked as the No. 22 receiver and No. 23 player overall in the 247 Composite.

Rambo is listed as just 165 pounds on his 6-2 frame but has the ability to separate from the defense. Rambo most recently visited Notre Dame.

Kobe Bryant, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year in 1996, is entering the home stretch of his illustrious NBA career.

But he certainly hasn’t forget the high school that helped make him into the player and person he is today.

USA TODAY Sports’ Martin Rogers went to Lower Merion (Penn.) High School to learn how Kobe’s remarkable high school career prepared him for greatness.

“He would tell me on the bus that Jordan couldn’t stop him,” a former teammate said of Bryant. “I still think that would be crazy for an NBA player to say right now. But he was always looking for the next challenge.”

You have to give credit to Nancy Mulkey.

The nation’s tallest girls basketball player at 6-9, Mulkey allowed herself to be jumped over — twice — by Josh Jackson during the POWERADE JamFest on Monday night at the Chicago Theatre during McDonald’s All American Game week.

The Oklahoma-bound Mulkey was facing the basket and Jackson came down the lane and leaped over her on the first attempt, but he missed the dunk. He then somehow convinced her to let him do it again, this time jamming the ball through and hanging by an arm that was through the rim.

Mulkey, from Cypress Woods High in the Houston area, looked a bit worried — both times — especially as Jackson’s legs flew by her head, which she covered with both arms.

Pittsburgh's two high school recruits seek releases after coaching change

New Pittsburgh basketball coach Kevin Stallings has been a busy man since word surfaced Sunday that he was leaving Vanderbilt.

Like any new coach, among his first orders of business was to try to retain the recruits signed by the previous coach. Except within a day of Stallings being hired, Justice Kithcart and Corey Manigault have both asked to be released from their National Letters of Intent signed in the fall.

Junior college guard Crisshawn Clark tweeted that he was still committed to the Panthers.

While both players could still end up at Pitt after building a relationship with Stallings and his new staff, both want to explore the landscape a bit more, assuming Pitt releases them.

Manigault is a 6-8 power forward from Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) and Kithcart is a 6-2 guard from Virginia Episcopal (Lynchburg).

According to reports, Maryland, Providence and Temple are among the potential suitors for Manigault.

Kithcart, ranked as the No. 15 combo guard in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, had considered TCU and Memphis when he initially picked Pitt. Oddly enough, former Pitt coach Jamie Dixon is now at TCU.  He also was recruited by Vanderbilt and Stallings.

“I was just very candid with both of them,” Stallings said during his introductory news conference, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If they don’t want to be here, I understand how change can affect some people, so we’ll do what we have to and can to keep them, but at the same time not be in their way if they want to go elsewhere.”

Stallings has reportedly offered 6-2 junior point guard Aaron Thompson, Manigault’s teammate at Paul VI. Thompson is considered a four-star by Scout and a three-star by Rivals. While Thompson has many offers in the ACC as well as UConn, he also had an offer from Vanderbilt when Stallings was the coach.

In a radio interview with the Starkey and Mueller Show in Pittsburgh, Stallings said being at Pitt presents a wider recruiting pipeline than what he experienced at Vanderbilt.

“There were so many factors and so many moving parts with that process at times at Vanderbilt that it made our recruiting pool quite a bit smaller,” Stallings said, according to pittsburgh.cbslocal.com. “We felt like we were able to be very effective within that small recruiting pool but I would tell you if there were 100 kids that were Division I college basketball players, we could probably recruit 25 or 30 of them…As long as I worked there, I refused to look at it as an impediment. I was not going to use that as an excuse.”

Texas baseball signee Kyle Muller strikes out 18 straight, records 36 consecutive outs on Ks

Dallas Jesuit’s Kyle Muller, who’s headed to Texas to play baseball next year, had quite the outing in a game Monday against Austin Lake Travis.

Muller struck out the first 18 batters he faced and carried a perfect game into the seventh before allowing a single, which he followed up with another strikeout. In his past three starts combined to that point, Muller had recorded 36 consecutive outs — all on strikeouts. That streak ended when he coaxed a double-play ground ball to end the seventh inning.

He finished Monday’s game with 21 strikeouts, and, according to the Dallas Morning News, Muller is 4-0 on the season with a microscopic 0.42 ERA in 33 innings, with a whopping 66 strikeouts.

Oh yeah, he also leads the Dallas area with 12 home runs. Here he is mashing a walk-off earlier this month:
