Edrice “Bam” Adebayo will transfer to High Point Christian in High Point, N.C., for his senior year.

The 6-9 rising senior had been playing for Northside in Pinetown, N.C., and has offers from Kentucky, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina and many others.

Adebayo is ranked as the No. 4 power forward in the nation and No. 14 player overall in the Class of 2016, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He wrote on Twitter: “Last 3 years at Northside have been the best and I appreciate everybody that supported me but I will be attending High Point Christian Academy. I will never forget all the memories I had there. I wish you all the best in the upcoming season.”

His new coach then confirmed:

Adebayo was quietly one of the most dominant players in the country last season, averaging 32.2 points and 21 rebounds per game and is just 106 points from the 2,000-point mark for his career.

In June, Adebayo led a balanced U.S. Select team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game. The team finished 3-0 at the 2015 adidas EuroCamp in Treviso, Italy.

He continued that dominant run during the AAU season with Team Loaded (N.C.). Adeybayo averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds a game on the super-competitive adidas Gauntlet.

New York Liberty host Virginia youth basketball team disqualified for playing a girl

The Charlottesville (Va.) Cavaliers U-11 youth basketball team made it to Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, thanks to the New York Liberty and Delta Airlines.

The team gained national attention recently when it was disqualified from the National Travel Basketball Association’s National Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., because of the inclusion of Kymora Johnson, a soon-to-be-fifth-grade girl.

The Cavaliers, coaches and parents were flown to New York City and honored by the Liberty during the game against Tulsa. After the game, the Cavs were to play an exhibition game against MSG’s “Basketball in the Boroughs and Beyond” program and fans were invited to remain to support the two youth teams.

Johnson had played in the event in past year and Cavs officials insisted that they did not try to hide Johnson’s involvement, going as far as to insist that tournament officials understood that Johnson was a girl when the team checked in. The NTBA disputed this, saying the coaches were told that a girl would not be allowed to play and that the Cavs let Johnson play anyway.

Cavs coaches say they were told that teams were allowed to field one girl on their roster. That’s before things apparently changed, following the decision by officials to disqualify the Cavs shortly after the team had advanced to the tournament semifinals, apparently because another team from Florida had already been disqualified for fielding a girl.

The NTBA said players must play against players of the same gender and that the only exceptions are in certain regular season tournament but not the nationals.

Steelers' James Harrison returns sons' participation trophies, wants awards to be earned

James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers rejects the notion that every kid should get something just for participating in youth sports.

We know this because Harrison took to Instagram to announce that he is returning the “Best of the Batch” trophies that his 6- and 8-year-old sons received. He said he is proud of his sons, but Harrison’s point is that he wants his sons to earn what they get, not just be given anything.

A lot of parents probably agree, although few have taken the journey that the Steelers’ linebacker has taken.

Harrison was a walk-on at Kent State, went undrafted, played a season in NFL Europe and was cut by the Ravens before becoming a member of the Steelers. He went on to win two Super Bowl rings, make five Pro Bowls and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

Support continues for Hopkinsville, Ky., after death of football player in tragic accident

Support continues to pour in for the grief-stricken community of Hopkinsville, Ky., following the tragic death of 17-year-old football Jayvon Quarles in an accident Thursday.

Quarles died of blunt force trauma to the head when a piece of equipment that the players were moving fell on him. A massive vigil was held in his memory at the school’s football field Friday with his jersey and helmet hanging in tribute.

Among the gestures of support:

  • Madisonville High passed a helmet at a scrimmage Friday night and raised $1,200 for Quarles family.
  • At Owensboro, which was supposed to play Hopkinsville in a scrimmage Friday, students traded in their typical red and black worn on Fridays during the school year and wore orange, Hopkinsville’s colors.
  • Apollo High was scheduled to play Hopkinsville in girls soccer Saturday. Before the game, the Apollo team presented Hopkinsville with flowers in a show of support.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Keith Tandy was excused from the team’s preseason game in order to return home to Hopksinville to mourn the loss of  Quarles, his nephew. The 26-year-old Tandy is entering his fourth season with the Bucs and has played in 40 games.

In a bit of a surprise, shooting guard Mustahpa Heron, ranked No. 26 by ESPN in the Class of 2016, committed to Auburn on Sunday, giving Bruce Pearl his biggest recruiting coup since coming to The Plains.

The 6-5 Heron from  Sacred Heart in West Haven, Conn., was expected to take additional campus visits rather than commit, but a trip to Auburn led to his announcement.

“I had no idea,” Heron told Scout’s Evan Daniels when asked if he had expected to commit. “But I got a vibe here that I didn’t get at any other schools that I visited. It was a family-oriented thing. … It’s a brotherhood. I know the developmental piece will be there when I get here.”

Heron, ranked No. 1 in the state of Connecticut and No. 6 nationally at his position by ESPN, said in July that his top six was Auburn, Alabama, SMU, Mississippi State, St. John’s, Maryland and Marquette. He has already visited Alabama, St. John’s and Marquette and had a late September visit planned for Mississippi State.

His father, Bryan, had played professionally in Europe with St. John’s assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, leading to speculation that the Red Storm might be able to keep Heron in the tri-state area.

Heron played this summer for the New York RENS, who won the championship of the adidas Gauntlet.

Spencer Lee, a rising junior at Franklin Regional in Murrysville, Pa., is returning home as a world champion.

Lee, a two-time American Family Insurance ALL-USA selection, won the gold medal at the UWW Junior World Championships in Brazil with a 10-0 technical fall victory against 2014 Cadet World champion Ali Reza Goodarzi of Iran in the 50 kg/110 pound class.

Lee locked up Goodarzi four times in his signature leg lace before the match was stopped in 48 seconds.

“I was surprised I had a leg lace. They told me to cinch it up, and I cinched it up and started rolling. I didn’t stop until I heard the whistle,” Lee told USA Wrestling.

A two-time Pennsylvania state champion, Lee was dominant on his way to gold with a 55-4 advantage in combined points and technical falls in all five of his matches.

“We just saw to be a World champion, it is really important to go from takedowns to turns,” National team freestyle coach Brandon Slay told USA Wrestling. Lee has done it a lot in the past, but he specifically did it today in every one of his matches. That is what separates him from the other guys. He took people down, then went right into his lace or his gut and teched them. He kept the same focus in the finals.”

And if the gold medal weren’t enough, how about this praise from Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs?

Aaron Pico, from Whittier, Calif., won the bronze medal Sunday in the 66 kg/145.5 pounds by scoring 13 consecutive points to beat  2015 European Junior champion Enus Uslu of Turkey, 13-4. After trailing 4-2 at the break, Pico rolled up the points in the second period to finish with a nine-point edge.

“I like being the only person out there and I can feel the energy,” Pico said. “People started chanting USA. It gives you a burst of energy and you let it fly. I told myself, this is the last match, and I will put everything into it. The guy got to my leg once. If I put pressure on him, do what I do with my offense, everything is going to work out.”

Pico, who takes online classes and trains specifically for freestyle wrestling, won the silver medal last year at Junior Worlds.

Mark Hall from Apple Valley, Minn., finished ninth in the the 74 kg/193 pound class. Hall, the American Family Insurance Wrestler of the Year, finished ninth with a 2-1 record.

He won his first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals 4-2. Hall was ahead 2-1 as time was running out, but Nagy was credited with takedown for two points with one second remaining. The U.S. protested but was denied. Hall was eliminated when Nagy, the eventual bronze medalist, lost in the semifinals.

Zahid Valencia, a recent graduate of St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., finished with a 1-1 record at 84 kg/185 pounds. He placed 10th and will now head to Arizona State.

Super 25 Computer football rankings: De La Salle at No. 1, St. John Bosco at No. 2

Under the radar for much of the season, perennial power De La Salle can make a legitimate national title claim itself.

Perennial power De La Salle can make a legitimate national title claim.

Super 25 computer rankings have returned to USATODAYHSS.com with the release of our preseason rankings courtesy of Ken Massey. And the computer is going way behind just the top 25.

You can see where every team ranks nationally by clicking here and then sort by state using the navigation bar at the top.

To start the season, the computer and our expert rankings see the same team at the top: De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)

De La Salle leads a group of six California schools in the top 15, including No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower), No. 6 Mater Dei (Santa Ana), No. 12 Bishop Amat (La Puente), No. 13 Centennial (Corona) and No. 14 JSerra (Gardena).

RELATED: Complete computer rankings

RELATED: Super 25 football computer rankings – who’s No. 1 in each state?

Following De La Salle and St. John Bosco in the top 5 are St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) at No. 3, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) at No. 4 and Chandler (Ariz.) at No. 5. To match those teams up with where they stand in the Super 25 Expert rankings, Bosco is No. 13, St. Edward is No. 19, Gorman is No. 4, and Chandler is No. 20.

IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), which is No. 2 in the Super 25 Expert rankings, is No. 9 in the computer rankings.

RELATED: Super 25 Expert rankings

Because some of the data is based on past performances, the computer will be more accurate as the season progresses. Generally, once a team plays three games, the computer can better slot how it stacks up against teams nationally. The ratings are designed to reward teams for their performance, and objectively quantify those performances. Strength of schedule is built into the model. The model also corrects for home field advantage. Teams lose less for a loss on the road and gain more for a win on the road. Margin of victory also is factored in.

Pitchers come up big in Perfect Game All-American Classic

While Saturday’s Under Armour All American Game in Chicago was about the combined 16 runs scored, Sunday’s Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego was more about the pitchers.

The East beat the West 3-1 at PETCO Park with the East scoring twice in the fifth inning and then escaping with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

Seven pitchers recorded two strikeouts in their respective inning of work.

The MVP award went to East outfielder Carlos Cortes, a South Carolina commit from Oviedo, Fla. He went 2-for-4 and made a stellar defensive play in the outfield. He was the only player with multiple hits for the East.

RELATED: What we learned at the Under Armour All-American Game

Neither team threatened to score through the first four innings and the teams combined for five hits.

Jason Groome from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) showed why some consider him the favorite to the be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft when he shut down all three batters he faced in the first. Groome’s fastball his 96 mph on the radar gun.

The first run of the game for the East was scored by Alex Kirilloff (Plum; New Kensington, Pa), who had singled, stole second and moved to third on a fly out. He came home when Ryan Zeferjahn (Seaman; Topeka, Kan.) uncorked a wild pitch. Brandon McIlwain, the South Carolina quarterback commit from Council Rock North (Newtown, Pa.), then tripled and scored on an infield error for a 2-0 lead.

The West’s lone run came in the sixth when Walker Robbins (George County, Leaksville, Miss.) hit a triple into the gap in right center to score Ben Baird (Agoura; Agoura Hills, Calif.), who had walked. Robbins had two hits for the West.

The East got an insurance run in the eighth on a triple by Nolan Jones (Holy Ghost Prep; Bensalem, Pa.).

In the ninth, Robbins singled for the West, but Cortes then made a sliding catch on a shallow fly ball to right to help the East. After a walk put runners on first and second, Khalil Lee (Flint Hill; Centreville, Va.) made a diving grab off a shallow liner to left to save a run. After another walk to load the bases, a strikeout ended the threat and the game.

Home run contest

Kiriloff won the championship over Blake Rutherford from Simi Valley, Calif., by a score of 12-11 in the finals. He hit six consecutive home runs for the victory. The two left-handed hitters blasted homer after homer despite PETCO’s largely hitter-unfriendly dimensions to right field.

Kiriloff advanced with an 11-9 victory against Joe Rizzo (Oakton; Oak Hill, Va.) in the semifinals. Rutherford beat Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area; Verona, Wis.) by a count of 10-6.

Kurt Warner tweets support for James Harrison's stance on participation trophies

James Harrison has caused a ruckus on social media in the sporting world after his controversial stance on his sons’ participation trophies.

Kurt Warner, Harrison’s opponent in Super Bowl XLIII and longtime NFL quarterback, agrees. The former Super Bowl champion and MVP went to Twitter to express his thoughts.

Warner went on to debate with followers, arguing that kids shouldn’t be given trophies for simply trying and effort should be expected, not rewarded. Warner is currently serving as the offensive coordinator at Desert Mountain High in Arizona, where his son Kade is a linebacker and tight end.

The Little League team from New Albany (Ind.) is going to Williamsport for the Little League World Series, just a year later than it had hoped.New Albany lost the Great Lakes championship to Jackie Robinson West of Chicago last year in the regional final. Jackie Robinson West would go on to win the U.S. championship and then lose in the final for the world title.

But months later after questions about the geographic boundaries that Jackie Robinson West had used to select players, Little League stripped JRW in February of the U.S. title and the regional title. District administrator Michael Kelly was removed from his position and team manager Darold Butler was suspended.

“We asked the boys, and all of them want to go,” New Albany manager Josh Biven told the Indianapolis Star. “As soon as the news came out (in February), they were all over their Instagram with Great Lakes champ and their numbers. They feel like they did kind of get screwed out of their opportunity to play.”

“They deserve this recognition. Just to see it will be neat. I’ve never been there. My son has never been there. Just to get there, walk around a little bit and hang out will be really cool.”

RELATED: Little League strips Chicago team of title

For the Mountain West Little League in Nevada, it received the U.S. title banner and already had the experience of going to Williamsport.

For New Albany, the players and coaches were honored as Great Lakes champion with a ceremony in their town but didn’t get to experience the trip to Pennsylvania until now, thanks to Little League. The team bus leaves Tuesday and they will arrive Wednesday.

“Little League will bring the 2014 New Albany Little League Baseball team to attend this year’s Little League Baseball World Series,” Little League spokesman Brian McClintock said. “While nothing can replace the experience of playing in Williamsport, every Region Champion should have the opportunity to participate in the fun, exciting activities surrounding the World Series.”

While they won’t be able to play, of course, the team’s agenda will be full.

“The team from New Albany will be a part of the Grand Slam Parade, our Opening Ceremonies, receive the jerseys, hats, and medals that all World Series participants receive, and be welcomed at all other World Series events during their stay in Williamsport,” McClintock said.

They also will get to throw out the first pitch for the opening game by the Great Lakes’ champion.

As for Jackie Robinson West, attorneys for the team filed a motion last week to drop its planned lawsuit. In its response before JRW announced its intention to drop the suit, Little League said eight of the 13 players were from outside the boundary and that JRW had orchestrated a “fraud and cover-up” that included two false maps.

Additional details were uncovered in a Outside The Lines report that aired Sunday, although neither Little League nor anyone associated with JRW would speak to ESPN.

D.C. anchor says giving kids participation trophies is 'child abuse'

The decision by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison to return the participation trophies that his 6- and 8-year-old sons were given has sparked a national debate on the issue. Harrison has had supporters and detractors.

A strong nod of support came in Washington, D.C., on Monday night, from veteran anchor Jim Vance of NBC4. As reported by the DC Sports Bog at The Washington Post, Vance used the term “child abuse.”

“It’s child abuse to give a kid a trophy that he has not earned,” he said. “If a parent’s responsibility is to teach a kid how to deal with the real world, then that is child abuse. Because that’s not the real world.”

Vance said the ages of the boys didn’t matter, because “you begin teaching your children from the moment they come on this Earth.”

Vance’s colleagues on the set seemed a bit taken aback as the video above shows. Vance is never shy about his opinions as has been proved in his decades on the air.

This might be the strongest take yet on the Harrison situation anywhere.

Harry Giles III, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2016, has scheduled his five official visits, his father told CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein. A decision could come in the fall.

Three of the five are to schools within his home state of North Carolina, although Giles will play his senior season at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. The others are Kansas and Kentucky, certainly no slouches.

“I talk to the coaches all the time, of course; I feel like we all have great relationships,” Giles wrote in his blog for USA TODAY High School Sports. “Coach K always keeps me laughing, Coach Cal is cool, Coach Williams is funny, Coach Self is cool and Coach Manning is cool too. I feel like we all have great relationships, which will make my decision a lot harder.

“I don’t think I’ll cut my list again; I think the next announcement will be where I’m going.”

Where this could get interesting is whether Giles and Jayson Tatum end up being a “package deal.” Tatum already has committed to Duke and Duke is planned as Giles’ final visit.

“It’s definitely still a possibility,” Giles told USA TODAY High School Sports earlier this month when asked about teaming up with Tatum. “My man Jay had to do what he had to do because he felt the time was right. I understood. I’m definitely looking at the other schools on my list just as hard though. We’ll see what happens. We’re best friends so I literally talk or text with him a few times a day.”

WWE superstar Darren Young will always be a Farmer … the kind you find in Union, N.J.

Young, half of the WWE tag team champions with Titus O’Neil, visited his high school alma mater last week as the Union High Farmers football team had its first full day of practice. Young posed for photos, offered advice and shook hands.

As was posted on the team’s Facebook page, “Not sure if the kids or coaches were more excited about the belt.”

Young, whose real name is Fred Rosser, played football for Union and then went to Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he played one year before leaving the team to focus on his academics.

Young, 31, made his pro wrestling debut in 2002. He signed a developmental deal with WWE in 2009 and was renamed Darren Young.

Young and O’Neil, a former University of Florida football player under Urban Meyer, defend their tag team titles in a fatal four-way match Sunday at Summer Slam in Brooklyn, N.Y.
