O'Maury Samuels, who burst onto recruiting scene after Nike Opening performance, commits to Michigan

$

On the day Michigan revealed the new slogan for its next recruiting class — “Blueprint 2017” — the Wolverines landed a significant piece.

Los Lunas (N.M.) four-star tailback O’Maury Samuels tweeted his commitment Sunday.

Samuels was relatively unknown prior to The Opening Regional in the Dallas area last month, when he turned heads and garnered a ton of attention with an impressive showing. He came into the event with little interest from D-I programs—he held an offer from New Mexico State—and left with an offer from Michigan. Now, a couple weeks later, and he’s committed to the Wolverines.

MORE: O’Maury Samuels bursts on to recruiting scene after Nike Opening performance

Samuels, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, is the nation’s No. 21 running back in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the top player in New Mexico.

He was the third player in as many days who committed after visiting for Friday’s spring game, following 2018 tight end/defensive lineman Leonard Taylor from Springfield (Ohio), just after the game on Friday night and then 2017 defensive lineman Phillip Paea, from Berrien Springs (Mich.) on Saturday.

Samuels becomes the 11th player in Michigan’s class of 2017 and pushes Michigan up to No. 7 nationally in the recruiting rankings for the class.

Samuels is the third running back in the class, joining Covington, Ga.’s Kurt Taylor and Groton, Mass.’ A.J. Dillon.

Oklahoma commit Chris Robison from Horn High (Mesquite, Texas) was named the MVP among quarterbacks during The Opening Regional event in Dallas three ago, but did not receive an invitational to the Elite 11. The lone invite went to Shawn Robinson (Denton Guyer).

He tried again Sunday in Houston and again was named MVP at his position. That was enough to gain him a spot in Los Angeles in early June. The winners then move to The Opening Final in Oregon in July.

Robison is ranked as the No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The final Super 25 expert rankings have Chino Hills (Calif.) at No. 1 and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) at No. 2.

Chino Hills finished 35-0 and won the CIF Open Division state champion, and reaching 100 points in 18 games.

Oak Hill finished 45-1 and won its first DICK’S Sporting Good High School Nationals, beating La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) on Saturday. The Warriors’ one loss was to 22 Feet Academy (Greenville, S.C.) 70-67 in mid-November.

Chino Hills was not eligible for the DICK’S because CIF rules says teams cannot play beyond the state championships.

So, we put the Super 25 Computer to work with the Score Predictor to play a simulated game on a neutral court.

And the results, according to the computer:

Chino Hills 87, Oak Hill 81.

Cedric Russell, the nation’s No. 5 combo guard in the Class of 2017, committed to LSU in September 2014.

But 18 months later, he’s now looking at other options. Russell, from Peabody (Alexandria, La.) has reopened his recruitment, his godfather told Rivals.com.

“As you get closer to actually getting on campus, you want to look at what’s a good basketball fit for you. Looking at that we decided that maybe we need to see some more options,” Derrick Kirk told Rivals.com. “He still loves LSU and he’s still considering them, but he wants to be out there and seeing that all of his options are available.”

Kirk also indicated that the 6-3 Russell might have additional options after he plays more point guard during the summer with his AAU team and also will likely see more time at the point next season with Peabody. That could make him a more attractive option to some schools at the next level.

He averaged 23 points per game as a junior and shot 52 percent from the field.

Before his commitment, he had received interest from Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Alabama-Birmingham, although coaching turnover at this programs could mean he would need to restart the process.

Simmons’ decommitment continues a rough patch for the LSU program with the expected departure of Ben Simmons, the announcement by Tim Quarterman that he was signing with an agent and Antonio Blakeney’s decision to explore the NBA, though he could return. The Tigers also lost top assistant coach David Patrick to TCU and new coach Jamie Dixon.

In Bruce Brown’s first two seasons at Vermont Academy (Saxtons River, Vt.) the team lost in the quarterfinals and then the championship game.

For his senior year, he had one goal — to not leave for the University of Miami without a title.

Brown now has two titles — New England England Preparatory School Athletic Council champion and Jordan Brand Classic All-American.

The former came last month when Brown scored 35 points in a 69-61 win against Cushing Academy. The latter came when he received a banner for his school as part of the Jordan Brand Classic Senior Night presented by American Family Insurance.

Brown, a 6-4 shooting guard ranked No. 31 by ESPN, will take part in the April 15 game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

RELATED: More on the players selected to the Jordan Brand Classic

“All he talks about is the team stuff,” coach Alex Popp told MassLive.com. “No. 1 for him was winning the championship here. He’s a winner. He values winning above all.”

Brown will be joined in New York by Tyrique Jones, who was selected for the regional game that is part of the Jordan Brand Classic festivities.

“It’s an honor to get to play in the Jordan Brand Classic,” Brown told MassLive.com. “I’m looking forward to competing.”

Cassius Winston’s future coach at Michigan State, Tom Izzo, describes him as “the straw that stirs the drink … he can make other people around him better.”

Winston has been showing that since he joined the varsity at Detroit Jesuit as a freshman. He came off the bench for the first few games before an injury opened a spot for him in the starting lineup and he has been a starter ever since.

He averaged 16 points a game his first season and improved to 17 as a sophomore, 21.5 as a junior and 22.5 as a senior. This season he also averaged 5.2 assists and 6.8 rebounds.

Winston led Detroit Jesuit to a No. 6 final ranking in the Super 25, Class A state title and a 28-0 record. He was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan and now will conclude his high school career at the Jordan Brand Classic.

Winston received a banner for his school this week during the Jordan Brand Classic Senior Night presented by American Family Insurance, surrounded by his teammates and family. The Jordan Brand Classic is April 15 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

MORE: Who else is going to the Jordan Brand Classic?

“This year I became more of a leader,” he said. “Last year was more that I was going to play my game and try to win the game like that. This year I’m trying to bring everyone with me so everyone plays at my level and my competition.

“You kind of have to build the culture that everyone has to work, has to come hard to play hard every day. It’s hard to build that kind of culture in young kids like that.”

Super 25 Computer rankings are provided by Ken Massey. The ratings are designed to reward teams for their performance, and objectively quantify those performances. Strength of schedule is built into the model. The model also corrects for home field advantage. Teams lose less for a loss on the road and gain more for a win on the road. Margin of victory also is factored in.

Udoka Azubuike, a 6-foot-11 center from Nigeria who plays at Potter’s House Christian Academy (Fla.) and has committed to Kansas, has been added to the 2016 World Select Team for the 19th annual Nike Hoop Summit.

Thon Maker and Lauri Markkanen, originally slated to play in the game, have been removed from the roster. Maker announced earlier this week plans to enter the NBA Draft.

Azubuike is a five-star center who is ranked by 247Sports.com as the 31st-best player in the nation.

Apple Valley (Minn.) sophomore Trey Jones is ranked as the No. 1 basketball recruit in his class in the state of Minnesota and No. 7 point guard in the class nationally by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He is also the younger brother of Tyus Jones, also a product of Apple Valley before going on to Duke and being selected No. 24 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft.

The recruiting battle for Trey figures to be intense — although Duke seemingly has an upper hand given the relationship with the family. Here is a look at why, thanks to our friends at Courtside Films.

In a clever move by USC coach Andy Enfield, he extended offers to the nation’s No. 1 sophomore Marvin Bagley III and his eighth grade brother Marcus on the same day, according to Evan Daniels at Scout.com.

Marvin, a 6-11 power forward, continues to pick up offers from all the elite programs that you’d expect for the No. 1 player in his class — Kentucky, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, Oregon, etc.

Bagley left Phoenix Hillcrest Prep in early November and was being home-schooled, before moving to Southern California and enrolling in Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in January.

After Bagley was ruled ineligible and lost an appeal, the CIF stated that he wouldn’t be eligible until January 2017, which would make it a year from the date he enrolled. However, the CIF ruled this week that Bagley can play at Sierra Canyon from the start of the season after the organization received updated transfer paperwork.

For Marcus, who is already 6-6, USC is the second school to offer, according to Pheonix Phamily, the Nike-sponsored AAU team Marvin Bagley Jr. runs

St. Joseph’s Regional (Montvale, N.J.) will host St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) on Sept. 10 in an out-of-state football matchup, St. Joseph’s announced Tuesday.

St. Joseph’s was 8-4 last season playing in one of the nation’s top conferences. St. Joseph’s lost in the New Jersey Public Group 4 title game 21-10 to Don Bosco Prep at MetLife Stadium. St. John’s is coming off a 7-4 season.

The game comes a week after St. Joseph’s will make a cross-country journey to play Serra (Gardena, Calif.) as part of the Honor Bowl.
