Bol Bol has an insane 7-foot, 8-inch wingspan

Bol Bol, son of former NBA giant Manute Bol, has been making significant strides in his game over the past few months.

What can’t be taught or polished, however, is size—and Bol has that in spades.

Check out this roster, tweeted by Adam Zagoria, of the Under Armour Elite 24 teams.

As noted, Bol’s wingspan is a full five inches more than three other bigs, and four inches longer than the next closest player.

We’re still a ways off from finding out where the 2018 star will land—Kansas and St. John’s are early leaders—but some college will be getting a premium rim protector.

Michigan state association cancels scrimmage for rules violation

The Michigan High Athletic Association has banned Canton and Wyandotte Roosevelt from participating in a scheduled football scrimmage for a rules violation, according to the StateChampsSportsNetwork. The cancellation of the scrimmage impacted both the varsity and junior varsity programs.

The school took part in a combined practice last weekend, but the state associated determined that was a scrimmage. Rules say teams must have 10 practices before they can scrimmage; the schools only had five before last weekend.

The state ruled each school also will lose one preseason practice, as selected by each coach.

Wyandotta coach Ron Adams sent a letter to parents, players and community supporting to apologize.

Part of the statement: “I apologize for the impact this will have on our players, program and fans. I never intended to deceive, manipulate or violate the rules. I accept full responsibility for my decision and actions as the head football coach for Wyandotte Roosevelt High School”.

Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix) already had one of the nation’s best big men in 7-footer DeAndre Ayton, ranked as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2017.

Now, the program has added 7-3 Chris Sodom from Beaumont Central in Texas, according to a tweet late Friday night. Sodom is originally from Nigeria and played for the Houston defenders on the Under Armour Association circuit.

He is a shot blocker, given his size, and will need to refine and develop his offensive game. He averaged 3.7 points and 3.8 rebounds during the 12 games of the UA schedule.

His addition follows that of Duro Shegc, a 6-9 eighth grader whom Hillcrest says has a 7-foot-5 wingspan.

Ryan Johnson had three touchdowns, including scores of 51 and 41 yards in the second quarter, to lead No. 23 Chandler (Ariz.) over Red Mountain (Mesa) 34-10 in the season opener Friday.

Chandler blanked Red Mountain 20-0 after halftime and was able to force turnovers.

Neither team scored in the first quarter before kicker Josh Daniels gave Red Mountain the lead moments into the second quarter with a field goal. Chandler answered as sophomore QB Jacob Conover hit Johnson with a short pass and Johnson burst down the sideline for the 51-yard TD and a 7-3 lead.

Red Mountain answered as Lance Lawson found Romero for a 59-yard TD with 7:03 left in the half before Johnson ran for a 41-yard score to make it 14-10 at halftime.

Conover, replacing current Oregon State freshman Mason Moran, finished the first half at 10-for-18 for 107 yards and a TD.

A pair of field goals and a 2-yard rushing TD by Oregon State commit TJ Green pushed the lead to 27-10 after three quarters before Johnson put the game away for Chandler with another TD run with less than eight minutes remaining.

The 34 points is a good sign for a Chandler offense that already has lost wide receiver Kolby Taylor for the season with a leg injury.

Chandler faces Centennial (Corona, Calif.) in the Brothers in Arms Bowl next weekend. It was be Centennial’s season opener.

Chris Wilson, a defensive back from Hitchcock, Texas, decommitted Friday from UCLA, less than three weeks after committing.

The manner in which he made his announcement rubbed some UCLA fans — and others — the wrong way.

As noted by ESPN recruiting analyst Craig Haubert, Wilson could have handled the situation better.

Wilson is ranked as a three-star prospect and also has reported offers from Iowa State and Stephen F. Austin, but as his tweet indicates, others have come calling recently.

It was a rough night for many of the nation’s longest active 11-man football winning streaks.

Edgewood Academy (Ala.) sat its nation’s-best streak end at 71 games. Dillon (S.C.) had its streak end at 37 games, which was fifth-longest in the nation.

In North Carolina, Crest (Shelby) saw its streak end at 32 in a 27-12 loss to South Point (Belmont).

The 32-game streak, which dated back to Dec. 14, 2003, was tied for No. 7 among active runs entering the season.

The game was a rematch of the 3A state title game last year, won by Crest 24-21 in overtime.

Despite losing 24 seniors from last year, South Point dominated early, outgaining Crest 173-30 in the first half.

Isaiah Washington from the Bronx and Trevon Duval from Wilmington, Del., had a back-and-forth duel to highlight the 11th annual Elite 24 at the scenic Brooklyn Park Pier.

Washington finished with 36 points — just shy of the Elite 24 scoring record held by Lance Stephenson — but Duval’s Team Drive got the victory against Washington’s Team Clutch, 140-136, in the first Elite 24 game to go to overtime.

Duval finished with 25 points, which puts him in the top 5 in scoring in event history, and added seven assists.

Team Clutch, which never led, trailed by seven points with 1:18 remaining at 125-118. A Washington three with 34.1 seconds left cut the lead to 127-123, but Hamidou Diallo scored off an outlet pass to push the lead to 129-123.

Washington made one of two free throws and then M.J. Walker drained a corner three with 22.4 remaining to cut the lead to 129-127.

After the teams traded steals, Clutch drove to the basket in the final seconds. A goaltending call on Diallo with 0.5 seconds remaining tied the game at 129-129 and forced OT.

Washington, ranked as the No. 32 point guard in the Class of 2017 by ESPN.com, had five points at halftime before scoring 31 points in the second half and overtime, many during a stretch of one-on-one vs. Duval.

“I was just wanted to represent my city and make sure nobody counts me out,” Washington said. “(Duval) is a good player. Everybody has their days.”

Also for Clutch, Auburn commit Austin Wiley had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Jalek Felton had 16 points on 8-for-15 shooting.

Along with Duval, Zion Williamson had 23 points on 10-for-10 from the field and Diallo had 21 points on 11-for-17 shooting.

No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) got a stern test in a preseason kickoff classic game against Miami Carol City, heading into its nationally televised season opener against No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) next week.

After being held scoreless in the first half, IMG returned the favor in the second half for a 17-7 victory.

The Ascenders had a rough first half with 82 penalty yards and 74 total yards of offense.

“It was an ugly first half, but that happens the first game and also happens two teams who are very physical – their defense is as good as you’re going to see around,” IMG coach Kevin Wright said. “We went in at halftime and had to focused on being disciplined, and it was good to see how they responded.

Four-star running back Asa Martin’s 13-yard run with less than nine minutes left in the third quarter tied the score at 7-7. After a field goal, IMG extended the lead on a 13-yard pass to LSU commit Jhamon Ausbon from Texas A&M commit Kellen Mond, making his IMG debut under center.

Carol City had taken a 7-0 lead on a 3-yard run by Oregon State commit Camron Davis with less than three minutes left in the half.

Grant Delpit had a pair of interceptions for IMG, helping to stall Carol City’s efforts.

The game against Grayson is scheduled for Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2 as part of the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff.

Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.) and Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) played in December in the state playoffs, with Colquitt County winning on the way to its second consecutive title and beating Mill Creek for the third straight meeting.

The teams faced off again to open the season Saturday at the Corky Kell Classic inside the Georgia Dome with Mill Creek posting a 34-27 victory, snapping the Packers’ 30-game winning streak.

Colquitt had not lost since Dec, 6, 2013.

Cameron Turley, who threw for more 2,300 yards last season with 18 touchdowns, had 304 yards passing and three touchdowns to lead Mill Creek.

Mill Creek led 20-3 with more than two minutes left in the third quarter, but Colquitt rallied for a field goal to end the quarter and cut the lead to 20-6. After Colquitt County got the ball back early in the fourth quarter, Jay Saunders hit Tory Ponder for a 34-yard touchdown to cap a drive that included converting fourth-and-4.

Turley answered with a 40-yard TD pass to tight end Mitch McEnaney for a 27-13 lead with 7:53 left in the game. Back to Saunders and Colquitt, and this time, he hit Xavier Powell for 54 yards to close the gap to 27-20 with 6:37 remaining.

After a defensive stop by Colquitt, Saunders was intercepted by Victor Heyward and Mill Creek took over at the Packers’ 19-yard line. Turley then hit Adrian Jackson with an 8-yard touchdown pass for a 34-20 lead with 4:13 remaining.

Still, Colquitt kept fighting — Saunders connected with Ja’Marcus Peterson for a 67-yard TD with 2:42 remaining and the margin was back to seven points.

The final dagger came in the last minute with Edmond Graham’s caught a 41-yard pass on third down.

Philomath (Ore.) suspends football activities during investigation into summer camp incident

PHILOMATH, Ore. — Philomath High School may have to cancel more football games as a result of an ongoing investigation into allegations of misconduct by players.

The Corvallis Gazette-Times reported that the school has already canceled the football team’s Sept. 2 home opener, but may also have to cancel two nonleague games because of Oregon School Activities Association rules on practices.

OSAA rules require three weeks of practices before games but because of the suspension, there likely will not be time for that.

All football activities have been suspended through Aug. 31 because of the ongoing criminal investigation into conduct that took place at a summer camp at Camp Rilea in Warrenton in which 35 players took part. Members of the coaching staff have been put on paid administrative leave. School officials are looking for interim coaches for whenever the program is allowed to resume while it conducts its own investigation into the coaches.

The suspension of football activities has been necessary for student safety,” district superintendent Melissa Goff said, according to Gazette-Times.

The school board said it was advised not to do any interviews or investigate until an investigation was completed by the Oregon State Police and the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office.

The specifics of the incident have not been publicly revealed. District officials said they don’t know who was involved and have made no determinations of guilt or potential punishment.
