Q&A with ESPN's Craig Haubert on what to watch in IMG Academy vs. Grayson

$

How talented are the rosters for No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) and No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)?

Well, more than 5% of the players ranked in the ESPN300 will be on the same field in the same game. That’s right, 17 players in the ESPN 300 are on the two rosters.

The game is part of the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff and airs at 6 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN2. Craig Haubert, a national recruiting analyst for ESPN, will be part of the broadcast team.

SCORE PREDICTOR: What happens when IMG faces Grayson?

Haubert spoke with USA TODAY High School Sports about what to expect and the top players on both teams.

Q: Grayson comes in with a number of transfers and also a new coach in Jeff Herron. I know you saw them practice in the spring and again this week. What’s your impression of how the transition is going?

A: The fact that he is new has made it easier for all the players because he came in the door and everyone is on equal footing. There aren’t guy who have been there for a while and he’s been coaching them and then a group of guys who are new with a coach they aren’t familiar with. The players who were there are getting a new coach and the players who are new are in a new situation anyway.

I know they did some team-building exercises in the spring and summer. In being around them in the spring and the fall, nothing really stood out along those lines. Some of those guys who have come in have been able to rally the troops and get everyone on the same page.

This game is a blessing and a curse. You’re coming out of gate with a difficult game and can find out a lot about your team. Also, during the dog days of summer, it’s easier to keep the guys motivated when they know their first game is on national TV against an equal or more loaded team.

Q:  Speaking of continuity, Kevin Wright enters Year 2 at IMG. He had the offseason, the spring and the summer to work with players despite the number of transfers that come into the program. Do you get the sense he is better acclimated?

A: He hasn’t had to worry about making the transition from a traditional high school to IMG this year. There certainly seems to be a comfort level there with him in terms of the program. It is a very different beast than a tradition high school with the players living there and the regimented schedule. IMG is not for everyone but they really have kind of found their groove. It also helps that the guys who are back are big leaders on the team.

Kellen Mond (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Kellen Mond (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Q: A lot of attention will be on IMG’s quarterback, Texas A&M commit Kellen Mond, who is replacing Shea Patterson. You have him as No. 2 among dual-threat quarterbacks in the ESPN 300. What are you expecting?

A: I’m really interested to see him. He is a good looking prospect, great frame and size. He’s really athletic and so was Shea, but he could even bring more of a dual-threat attack to that position. IMG is looking at a new quarterback, new receivers and a big game so what type of consistency can they can find? I think Kellen Mond is someone with his best football still ahead of him.

Q: Let’s flip over to IMG’s defense. They have playmakers at every level, but you start with the top two defensive ends in the ESPN 300 for 2017 in Robert Beal and Joshua Kaindoh.

A: A major factor in this game is going to be how the Grayson offensive tackles handle those two. Beal is a great athlete with a quick first step. He does the little things well,  in terms of using his hands and leverage and awareness. He can be an immediate impact guy and he’s difficult to handle. He’s been well coached and now he’s going into that situation where he can grow with the type of concentration and focus he can get at IMG. Kaindoh is a little more raw and he’s so tall. He’s getting better every time we see him.

Q: Dylan Moses is another obvious name in his first year at IMG. He’s been recruited forever, it seems. What’s your sense of how he’s settling in at linebacker?

A: I’m probably the most intrigued to see him. He’s been on the scene for a while. He’s a  phenomenal athlete who was a running back and made the transition to linebacker as a junior at his former school. He had to do a lot and was a little banged up. On film, he didn’t look like a player who was completely comfortable in that role. He’s now had the chance to go through the spring and summer and be more specific and more concentrated on defense. As talented as he is, and as well-known as he is, he’s a better player than we’ve seen in past. It will be interesting to see his growth at that position.

MORE: Class of 17 profile on Dylan Moses

Q: When you look at Grayson on defense, there are a lot of guys who stand out, starting in the secondary with DeAngelo Gibbs and Jaymest Williams. What challenge do they provide?

Gibbs is an athlete and most schools are recruiting him for the secondary. He’s got great size and he can cover a lot of ground. If Grayson is going to win this game, Gibbs will need to make plays on both of the ball.

Williams is more diminutive in his build and is an intense competitor. When I was out at practice and wanted to talk to him, I waited an extra 15 minutes because he’s out there when practice is over working with some of the corners, doing extra things and in no rush to get off the field. He’s a new guy but had quickly become a leader on that defense.

They both need to play like top 50 national players.

Q: Grayson quarterback Chase Brice is ranked No. 14 among pro-style passers in the ESPN rankings. He is a bit different in style than Mond. What’s your feeling on how he deals with what he is facing in IMG’s secondary?

A: He’s been there and he has the ability to make all the throws. When I had the chance to see him, what stuck out to me is that he’s a really consistent performer. He’s a good player. Clemson has two quarterback commits in this class with Chase and Hnter Johnson and you can see why they would have interest in a player like him. Offensively, with what Grayson does and some of the wing-T elements, he needs to make good decisions throughout the game in terms of handing the ball off and in the passing game.

When you look at that IMG secondary, there are two rangy guys in (LSU commit) Grant Delpit and (Ohio State commit) Isaiah Pryor. Those guys can cover a lot of ground quickly. There aren’t going to be a lot of openings, but if there are openings, they won’t be there for long.

Q: ESPN has a lot of big games this weekend. If you couldn’t be at IMG-Grayson, which game would you want to see?

A: Cedar Hill-Gorman. There seems to be a lot of excitement down there in Texas. You have two very successful programs and Cedar Hill has had a lot of success playing teams. There should be a great contrast in styles.

Three years after brain surgery, Nevada forward Jaelyn Royal commits to New Mexico State

Jaelyn Royal, who had brain surgery in December 2013, committed to play basketball at New Mexico State.

Royal, a 6-foot forward from Nevada, underwent Chiari Malformation decompression surgery, a procedure that reduces or eliminates pressure on the spinal cord caused by the cerebellar tonsils, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal. A small piece of the skull is removed to relieve the pressure.

After the surgery in December 2013, she was not cleared by doctors until April 2014. She was unable to do any conditioning or weight lifting to get back in basketball shape until August of that year. She was eventually allowed to get in the gym three times a week as she continued her recovery. She played a limited role as a sophomore at Liberty (Henderson, Nev.).

She transferred to Coronado last year and had to sit out her junior season because of transfer rules.

She played AAU basketball for the So Cal Select program over the summer and recently tore her ACL. She hopes to recover in time for her senior season.

Olympic swimmer Cammile Adams is back home in Texas and back in the classroom.

She needs her final internship credit to graduate from Texas A&M after taking 18 months to train for Rio and will serve as a student teacher at Copeland Elementary in the Cy-Fair Independent School District.

A former Cypress Woods swimmer and now two-time Olympian, she finished fourth in the 200-meter butterfly in Rio with a personal-best time of 2:05.90. She also was chosen as one of the U.S. swim team captains.

“I was just really excited to get back to a normal life,” Adams said in a news release, according to the Houston Chronicle. “I grew up in Cy-Fair, and so I wanted to come back home. School and students is what I miss the most after 18 months of not being around it. That’s why I did it this fall instead of waiting for spring.

“I really missed it and wanted to get back into it.”

Adams will be in a fifth-grade classroom.

“It was super surprising and exciting (to bring in Adams), because that’s one of our kids,” Copeland principal Michelle Rice said.

“We always know there are CFISD graduates going on to do great things but we don’t get to see all of them make their mark. When you’re able to see them making a difference and having a positive impact, that’s what you want to celebrate.”

Eaton (Haslet, Texas) High School kicker Rhett Marshall must have a strong leg.

According to accounts from Michael Florek of the Dallas Morning News, Marshall kept kicking balls on to the roof of the building behind the end zone — despite a net ostensibly intended to keep the balls from going on the roof.

And given that it was a 55-0 victory Thursday night for Eaton against Braswell (Little Elm), his leg was in use quite often.

The result: Someone had to climb up to the roof and retrieve the balls.

Lowell Narcisse, an LSU commit from St. Charles, La., has suffered a torn ACL, he announced Friday on Twitter.

Narcisse, ranked as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings, was injured on a 17-yard run during a 28-12 victory against Donaldsonville on Thursday. Narcisse was attempting to elude a defender on the play. He left the game and was able to leave the stadium under his own power, according to SECCountry.com.

“I know this is probably what everybody didn’t expect,” Narcisse  wrote on Twitter. “My MRI just came back and yes I tore my other ACL. Thanks for all your prayers and calls. Go Wildcats.”

This is his second ACL tear; he tore the ACL in the other knee about 15 months ago during the 2015 spring game and then suffered a scare when he injured that knee again during St. Charles’ postseason run last fall.

Narcisse completed 11-of-17 passes for 113 yards with two touchdowns and an interception before the injury.

Narcisse is expected to enroll early at LSU in January.

TCU commit Shawn Robinson made a triumphant debut for DeSoto (Texas), leading the No. 14 Eagles to a 47-13 victory against Dallas Jesuit.

Robinson, a transfer from Denton Guyer, threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more before coming out in the third quarter.

He was hot from the start.

Robinson finished with 281 passing yards on 11 for 18 and 100 rushing yards on seven carries.

DeSoto took a 14-3 lead into halftime but scored three times in the third quarter on a 34-yard pass to Emmett Perry, a 74-yard run by Robinson and a 24-yard pass to KD Nixon. Nixon finished with 123 yards on four catches.

Courtney Douglas, who came in to replace Robinson with the score 34-6, ran for 126 yards total, most coming on a late 87-yard run.

The defense held Jesuit to 4.6 yards per play and 326 total yards.

Next up for DeSoto (1-0) is a much-anticipated game in which Robinson will face his former team, Denton Guyer.

Judson (Converse, Texas) scored 22 points in the fourth quarter for a 35-28 upset victory against No. 9 Lake Travis (Austin) on Friday.

Lake Travis seemed to be pulling away when Maleek Barkley scored on a 21-yard run and a 28-13 lead with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter. It was Lake Travis’ third TD of the quarter after Judson held a 13-7 lead at halftime.

Judson began its comeback on a 14-yard TD run by Mi’kel Jackson with 9:33 left in the game. Julon Williams then cut the margin to 28-26 with  16-yard run with 4:21 left after the two-point conversion pass failed.

With Lake Travis clinging to a two-point lead, Barkley slipped in the end zone for a Judson safety to tie the score at 28-28 with 4:03 left.

Judson’s winning points came on a 36-yard pass to Sincere McCormick with 1:28 left in the game.

Lake Travis got the ball just into Judson territory but was stopped on downs with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Lake Travis travels to Steele (Cibolo) next week. Judson hosts Brennan (San Antonio).

No. 17 Allen (Texas) beats Hoover (Ala.) in Tom Landry Classic

Hoover (Ala.) posted the first points of the game and never scored again as No. 17 Allen (Texas) earned a 25-7 victory in the Tom Landry Classic.

The victory was the first for new Eagles head coach Terry Gambill, who returned to Allen to replace Tom Westerberg. Gambill is a former Allen assistant.

The game was played before an overflow crowd of more than 20,000, including many fans who trekked from Alabama to watch the Bucs.

Neither team lit things up offense in a game that featured 22 penalties, but Allen got field goals of 48, 47 and 32 yards from Michael Ewton, who also added a pair of extra points.

Allen QB Mitchell Jonke threw for 155 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Brock Sturges ran for 60 yards and a TD. Tenyo Aieni had 70 yards receiving.

For Hoover — which became the first out-of-state team to play in the Landry Classic — was led by Garrett Farquhar’s 131 yards passing and 51 yards receiving by Shedrick Jackson.

Allen led 10-7 at halftime and opened up a lead in the third quarter on Ewton’s 47-yard field goal, a safety and an 8-yard TD reception by Josh Cornell.

Austin Westlake downs No. 11 Katy in Texas showdown

Austin (Texas) Westlake retook the lead with 10:10 remaining in the fourth quarter and held off No. 11 Katy for a thrilling 32-29 victory on Friday night.

After Westlake broke a 22-22 tie on a 28-yard field goal by Mauro Montemayor, the Chaps opened the lead further when Texas commits QB Sam Ehlinger hit Andrew Boykin for a 17-yard touchdown with 2:25 left in the game.

Katy, however, was not going away. JC Angulo caught a 64-yard pass from Rocky Emery 19 seconds later and the margin was back to three. But an onside attempt failed and Westlake was able to finish off the victory.

Ehlinger finished 18 for 30 for 250 yards with one touchdown passing and ran for another 64 yards. Boykin had seven catches for 103 yards for last season’s 6A D1 runner-up.

For Katy’s ground-based attack, Deondrick Glass carried the ball 16 times for 173 yards with touchdowns of 37 and 59 yards.

After Katy went undefeated a year ago, this was its first loss since the 6A D2 state final in 2014. According to the Houston Chronicle, Katy had not lost a season opener since 2008.

Auburn basketball commit Austin Wiley, ranked as the No. 17 player in the Class of 2017 by ESPN.com, has transferred to Conrad Academy in Orlando, he confirmed to USA TODAY High School Sports.

Wiley, a 6-10 power forward, had previously indicated his plans to leave Spain Park High (Hoover, Ala.) for a prep school in Florida. He averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds last season for Spain Park, which reached the state 7A finals.

“I’m going to miss all the people at Spain Park and the school,” Wiley told USA TODAY High School Sports last week at Elite 24 in Brooklyn. “But it was just a choice for furthering my education and furthering my basketball talent. I just had to get better as a player and a person, so that’s why I made the move.”

Wiley had 22 points and 12 rebounds, the only player in the Elite 24 game with a double-double. In the process, he earned a share of the MVP award.

Conrad is coached by Shawn Wiseman, who led United Faith Christian Academy to a pair of North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1A state titles in 2009 and ’10.

Wiley also was on Team USA’s gold medal winners at the U17 world championships.

“I feel like I got better,” he said. “It was hard competition. I just got better as a player.”

Top 10 cornerback Jaymest Williams commits to South Carolina

LOGANVILLE, Ga. — Jamyest Williams committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks at Grayson High School’s football stadium Saturday afternoon.

Surrounded by friends, teachers and family, Williams put on a Gamecocks visor, ending a roughly three-year recruiting process.

“Relieved, really,” Williams said in a brief interview with TEGNA partner 11Alive. “Got it over with. Glad I got it over with.”

“This is a great opportunity for me and my family. I think it’s going to put me in the best position to succeed,” he added.

The senior cornerback out of Grayson High School is the No. 10 athlete in the country and is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the country, according to Rivals.com.

Williams narrowed it down to five schools before his announcement Saturday. They were South Carolina, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State and Tennessee. His first college offer was from Georgia Tech back in 2013.

While everyone suspected Williams would be heading out to Columbia, S.C. next year, University of Georgia fans were clinging on to a little bit of hope, but were disappointed.

What did Williams have to say to those fans?

“Well, you know…,” Williams said stopping, then burst out laughing. He knew to be careful with his words. Georgia fans are a passionate bunch.

“Spurs up!” Williams said.

Williams is the fourth four-star commit for the Gamecocks this month, and he is one of the highest ranked players to commit to South Carolina in several years.
