Teen shot at football game in Tulsa; shots fired at Louisiana game

A teen was shot at the McLain High School football field in Tulsa, Okla., police said, according to multiple reports.

Police said the teen was in stable condition at a nearby hospital after the bullet grazed his left temple, the Tulsa World reported.

Police said they don’t believe the injury to be life-threatening.

“He’s conscious. He got a little bit woozy, but he’s in stable condition,” Police Cpl. Naresh Persaud told the World.

The shooting occurred after an argument between the victim and a group of other teen boys inside the stadium that was verbal until the shot was fired. What caused the argument is unclear, police said.

The shooter has been arrested and three others were being held for questioning.

Police evacuated the stadium when shots were heard, although it was a chaotic scene as fans began to run and a number of people were injured.

The game was stopped with Sequoyah leading 26-6 with a few minutes remaining.

Meanwhile, in Louisiana the conclusion of Friday night’s 49-11 Scotlandville victory against McKinley was punctuated by gunfire. Mike Gegenheimer, a freelance reporter for the New Orleans Advocate, reported on the incident from the scene, noting that the shots fired precipitated a mass exodus to cars and that there were no reported injuries, despite a flurry of shots following the game:

No suspects have been detained in connection with the shooting, per Gegenheimer, though a weapon was identified, which could eventually help identity those responsible for the incident. There were no reported injuries.

Both teams immediately went to their buses.

The Terry Gambill Era at Allen, Texas, is off to a 2-0 start.

Allen, ranked No. 13 in the Super 25, rolled to a 45-10 victory against visiting Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.) on Friday night with help from five Evangel turnovers.

Gambill, a former Allen assistant, returned in the offseason to replace longtime coach Tom Westerberg.

While the score was tied at 3-3 with less than five minutes left in the first quarter, Allen would score 28 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Brock Sturges ran for 40 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns and Carson Shleker scored on a 42-yard reception from Mitchell Jonke and a 62-yard punt return. Jonke threw for 120 yards and a TD.

Kirby Bennett added a 1-yard run and backup QB Grant Tisdale connected on a 22-yard TD pass with Tevyn Stevenson.

Evangel’s lone TD was on a 3-yard run from Elijah Chatman late in the third quarter.

After opening with home victories against out-of-state foes, Allen visits Coppell (Texas) next week.

The Shawn Robinson Bowl was a victory for the quarterback’s new school against his former school as No. 7 DeSoto (Texas) downed Guyer (Denton, Texas), 51-17 on Friday night.

Robinson, who transferred after his mother became the girls basketball coach at DeSoto, threw two touchdown passes and ran for another in the victory.

A TCU commit, Robinson threw for 112 yards and ran for 94 as DeSoto outgained Guyer by a margin of 395 to 240.

Robinson has been respectful of his former coaches and teammates throughout the week, although DeSoto asked him not to do an interviews. Earlier this week, DeSoto coach Todd Peterman told The Dallas Morning News, “People can make something out of it if they want, but there’s nothing to it on our side. It’s nothing we’ve talked about as a team. I meet with Shawn every day, and it’s something that has never even been brought up.”

Along with Robinson, Kelan Walker ran for three touchdowns – 1, 3 and 4 yards – on 10 carries.

Noah Cain ran for 129 yards and both Guyer touchdowns. Guyer attempted 14 passes, gaining 20 yards.

Add this to the highlight reel as he hit Connor Hutchings with a 44-yard strike off a scramble with no time left in the first half to give Pinnacle a 16-10 lead at halftime Friday night against Chandler.

The score provided momentum for the second half, but it was Chandler that squeaked out a 31-16 win.

Guess you could see this one brewing.

Lanett (Ala.) was leading by 15 points and was trying to run out the last minute of the game, but Horseshoe Bend coaches called timeouts after plays on first and second down, according to an account in the Opelika-Auburn News.

Lanett coach Clifford Story did not appreciate that tactic and told his coaches to have his quarterback Tr Story, also his son, throw a deep ball. The result was a 49-yard TD. Lanett then called a trick play on the PAT that failed. And then went for an onside kick.

The final score ended up as 38-17.

“We’re trying to get the game over, and they wanted to keep calling timeouts. So let’s just score again then,” coach Story told the Opelika-Auburn News. “All of it just escalated from there.”

Coaches will taunting each other across the field in the final moments and Story said Horseshoe Bend coach Jason Franklin refused to shake hands and “cursed him out.” Story added that Franklin then cursed out a Lanett assistant coach and made physical contact with him.

Franklin declined to comment on the incident after the game.

You can see the postgame scuffle in the video above.

“It could have been ugly,” Story said. “That’s just not the kind of thing we do here at Lanett.”

No. 11 Mallard Creek (N.C.) holds off Byrnes (S.C.) in rematch of 2015 classic

A year ago, Mallard Creek’s climb up the national rankings was short-circuited by an early season 31-29 loss to Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) on a field goal in the final two minutes after Mallard Creek climbed back from a three-touchdown deficit.

This time, when the two schools met, Mallard Creek got the early lead and then held on for a 21-14 victory Saturday night.

Mallard Creek (Charlotte), ranked No. 11 in the Super 25, moved to 3-0 with the victory heading into an off week.

Byrnes (1-2) bounced back to cut the lead to 21-14 with eight minutes to play and then made an interception on the next possession to take over at midfield. Mallard Creek’s defense stiffened and forced a punt with less than five minutes left.

Mallard Creek was able to put together a drive and hold on for the win.

Mallard Creek got on the scoreboard with an 18-yard run by quarterback Chauncey Powell late in the first quarter. Mallard Creek then made an interception early in the second quarter and quickly turned the turnover into a TD for a 14-0 lead.

Byrnes got a fabulous one-handed catch in the back of the end zone from Demarcus Gregory to cut the lead to 14-7 with 4:26 left in the half.

Ahead 14-7 late in the third quarter, Mallard Creek had a chance to seemingly put the game away after getting to the Byrnes’ 6. But after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Mavericks went four-and-out.

On the next play, Mallard Creek’s Larry Mankins tipped the screen pass to himself and went in for pick six for a 21-7 lead.

Bruce Henderson, a 17-year-old football player at Sultana High (Hesperia, Calif.), needed emergency surgery after suffering a head injury during Friday night’s game.

Henderson is “responding to stimulus on his hands and feet,” according to an update on Sultana football team’s Twitter feed on Saturday evening.

Henderson suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter against Norte Vista High, according to Victor Valley News. Other accounts indicate it is possible the injury could have stemmed from Henderson hitting his head on the ground. The video is inconclusive.

According to the report, Henderson made it to the huddle and then went to the bench. He stood up, told the coaches he wasn’t feeling well and passed out. The report said Henderson was having seizures and did not regain consciousness as he was tended to by athletic trainers and paramedics.

After the surgery, his mother, Katrina, posted on Facebook: “Still have a very long road to recovery. They said [Bruce] could be in here for 3 months. Depends on how long it takes for swelling to go down.”

Support has come in from other football programs and schoolmates on social media. A prayer service is scheduled for Sunday. A number of players visited Henderson in the hospital on Saturday.

Two members of the 2015-16 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Wrestling Teams won gold medals at the Junior World Championships this weekend in Macon, France.

Two-time ALL-USA Wrestler of the Year Mark Hall from Apple Valley, Minn., won the 74 kg/163-pound weight class and Lee, a two-time ALL-USA selection from Franklin Regional in Murrysville, Pa., repeated at 50 kg/110 pounds and won his third consecutive world title overall.

It is the first time the U.S. has won two Junior World gold medals in men’s freestyle since Stephen Abas and Donny Pritzlaf in 1998, according to USA Wrestling.

RELATED: Meet the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Wrestling Teams

Hall, who is heading to Penn State after a summer that saw him compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials, won the world title with a decisive 10-0 victory against 2016 Junior Asian champion Ahmad Bazrighaleh of Iran. Hall used a quick takedown on a single leg and then four leg laces to end the bout.

Hall was the first high schooler to win 12 state titles in Minnesota — six individual titles and six team titles.

Hall adds Junior World champion to a resume that already included 2014 Cadet World champion, three-time age-group World Team member, three-time USAW Cadet Nationals champion and six-time high school state champion. His resume also includes a 2014 Cadet world title, three Cadet national titles and three appearances on the World Team.

“After last year, that feeling’s been in my heart for a while, and this just takes it and crushes that feeling I had last year,” Hall said. “That’s the first time I’ve ever had tears of joy.

“It feels good, and it helps me know that I have step that I’m on now, and I’ve just got to keep climbing the others. This is big, but there are bigger and better things that I can get to.”

In the final against Kyrgyzstan’s Khurshid Parpiev, Lee, an Iowa commit, trailed 4-0 early and then 8-3 before posting eight consecutive points for a dramatic 11-9 victory.

“I just overcame a lot,” said, Lee, who will be vying to win a fourth consecutive Pa. state titles this winter. “I felt like he was just very counter offensive. I’m getting in places where I’m normally comfortable, and next thing you know it I’m giving up exposure points and four’s. I didn’t know what to do. I just kept wrestling.”
