Michael Porter Jr. remains the top basketball player in the Class of 2017 in the latest 247Sports rankings released Tuesday.

Porter, a 6-9 small forward who is committed to Washington, was named No. 1 over Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix) 7-footer DeAndre Ayton in mid-July following Peach Jam.

Porter averaged 24 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals for Mokan Elite during the EYBL season.

He begins his first season at Nathan Hale (Seattle) after transferring from Father Tolton in Columbia, Mo. Porter’s father has taken a job as an assistant coach for Lorenzo Romar at Washington.

“DeAndre Ayton is a tremendous prospect who is ranked No. 1 by most analysts. I, however, favor Michael Porter as the top prospect in 2017,” 247 national recruiting director Jerry Meyer said in an interview post on the site. “I love the versatility and the steady improvement of Porter. At 6-9 he is a multi positional player with a complete skill package and athleticism.

“Porter is the consummate modern day versatile, skilled swing man. As of now, Ayton and Porter are the candidates for the top spot in 2017.”

Power forward Mohamed Bamba from the Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.) remains No. 3 followed by center Mitchell Robinson from Chalmette (La.).

Billy Preston moved into the Top 5 with this ranking. Preston, who played last season at Advanced Prep in Dallas, is at Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). Wendell Carter from Pace Academy (Atlanta) dropped one spot to No. 6. Gary Trent Jr., who had been No. 6, is now No. 11 as he begins at Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.).

A Georgia high school softball player has died just 24 days after being diagnosed with leukemia.

According to GwinnettPrepSports.com, Simran “Simi” Saiyed from Parkview (Lilburn) died Sunday at age 15.

The softball team at Parkview will wear decals on their batting helmets with her No. 17.

“She was a fantastic kid,” Parkview softball coach Justin Bishop told GwinnettPrepSports.com. “As a ninth-grader, she got amazing grades in all gifted and AP classes, as much as a ninth-grader can take. She was a very hard worker, very coachable. Her parents were very supportive. She had fun playing the game. … She had a large group of friends. You could tell that by the outpouring (Monday) at the (funeral) service. It wasn’t easy for us. It was a tough day.”

Saiyed had played on the JV team last fall as a freshman after playing baseball against boys and was not playing this season to focus on her studies.

CINCINNATI –– Sean Clifford and Matt Bockhorst — two of St. Xavier High School’s highly-recruited senior football players — received their Under Armour All-American jerseys Tuesday as the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to their school.

Clifford and Bockhorst are both four-star recruits, ranked among the top 5 in the state for the 2017 recruiting class by ESPN.

The 10th annual Under Armour All-America Game is Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla., and features more than 90 of the top recruits in the country in a nationally-televised showdown on ESPN.

Clifford, a 6-foot-2 quarterback who’s committed to Penn State, and Bockhorst, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman who’s headed to Clemson, have both seen injuries disrupt their senior seasons.

“I’m looking forward to the learning experience the most at the Under Armour All-America Game,” said Clifford. “Getting coached by the best coaches in the nation will definitely be my No. 1 priority since I want to get myself better for the college experience.”

Bockhorst has his eyes on the practice as much as the game.

“I’m looking forward to the Under Amour All-America Game practices,” he said. “I think that the relationships we develop with the other kids from around the country are really cool, and I’ll be able to get to know them throughout the week.”

Bockhorst tore his ACL at Nike’s The Opening camp over the summer and is sidelined for the season. Clifford has missed the Bombers’ last two games with a foot injury after attempting to play through it in Week 1.

The Alabama high school public address announcer has resigned but said his remarks about those who choose not to stand for the national anthem were misquoted.

As originally posted by Denise Crowley-Whitfield on Facebook Friday night, McKenzie High announcer Pastor Allen Joyner said: “If you don’t want to stand for the national anthem, you can line up over there by the fence and let our military personnel take a few shots at you since they’re taking shots for you.” The Facebook post has since been deleted.

Butler County schools superintendent Amy Bryan denounced the remarks Saturday to AL.com and said that Joyner had called to apologize.

In a lengthy email that Joyner sent to Bryan on Monday and reprinted by the Greenville Advocate, Joyner said his words were taken out of context. He said he did not want his decision to resign to be taken as an admission of “being wrong,” but rather that he is choosing not to put his family, his church and school under further scrutiny because of “this misquote.”

“I never said anybody should be shot. My words were, ‘If you don’t want to stand for the national anthem, please go sit at the baseball field and let some of our folks take a shot at reminding you of the price our military paid for your freedom to sit.’ I never advocated violence of any kind … Just an opportunity to educate.”

Sacred Heart beat rival Assumption (Louisville) in the final 25-17, 25-27, 25-20 to move to jump from No. 13 to No. 5. Assumption, which had been No. 5, fell to seventh.

In winning the LIVT, the Valkyries needed to beat some of the best teams in the state and country. After sweeping their preliminary matches Friday night, they knocked off Mercy, ranked No. 3 in Kentucky, 25-9, 25-20. They followed that up by rallying to beat Marietta (Ga.) Walton – the No. 8 team last week’s Super 25 – 23-25, 25-21, 25-22. Walton is No. 15 this week.

“We got the talent and the ability to play with anyone,” Sacred Heart coach Brett Versen told Gannett partner The Courier Journal. “It definitely gives us a little bit of confidence knowing that, hey on any given day, we can go up there and play and swing and serve and pass and play defense just like anybody else.”

The top three spots remained the same led by No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), No. 2 Fayetteville (Ark.) and No. 3 Oak Ridge (Conroe, Texas).

Eagan (Minn.) moved from No. 7 to No. 4 with victories against East Ridge (Woodbury, Minn.) and Willmar.

Eleven of the top 100 seniors in the nation and No. 1 overall junior Zion Williamson are among the stars scheduled to play in the 15th annual Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament in December in South Carolina.

Organizers announced the 16-team field that will be divided into two eight-team brackets on Tuesday for the event scheduled for Dec. 20-23.

La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) is the top national team in the field after finishing No. 3 in the final Super 25 rankings last season and reaching the title game at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Nationals. The Lakers have three top 100 players in Brian Bowen (No. 17overall by the 247Sports Composite), Jaren Jackson (No. 23 ), and Michigan commit Jordan Poole (No. 90). It is the first time that a school from Indiana has competed in the tournament.

The field includes teams from representing South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, Florida, Maryland, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) with Jordan Tucker, Louisville commit Darius Perry and USC commit Jordan Usher is another strong title contender.

Hamilton Heights (Chattanooga, Tenn.), winner of the National Association of Christian Athletes national title last season, has a pair of shooting guards ranked in the national top 50 in No. 39 Nickeil Alexander-Walker and No. 43 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Williamson will lead Spartanburg Day, which is among a strong contingent of players and teams from South Carolina participating. North Carolina commit Jalek Felton and Juwan Gary led Gray Collegiate and Christian Brown is a highly recruited star for A.C. Flora.

Lafayette Christian will be the first Louisiana school in the event’s history.

Here is the field of 16:

A 7-year-old remains unconscious after collapsing during a soccer practice late last week, his grandmother told WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Aidan Heath was running drills at the Woodstock YMCA when his grandmother saw him fall to the ground.

“I thought he was playing, and then I saw his eyes rolling into the back of his head,” Peggy Pickard Moore told the station. The coach rushed to the young boy and administered CPR until medical personnel arrived.

Moore said Heath suffered cardiac arrest and doctors believe it is a congenital heart defect, she said. More tests are expected to determine the cause.

Moore has set up a Facebook page called “Prayers for Aidan.” She posted, “Aidan is a very lovable, charming, goofy and active little boy that loves his little brother and soccer.”

The family has arranged a prayer group and is working to set up a means for donations.

Big-play threat Tee Higgins ready for Under Armour All-America Game

Tee Higgins, a wide receiver for Oak Ridge (Tenn.), seems to add highlight plays every week.

Start with his two touchdowns in the season opener that included a 51-yard score on the team’s first offensive play from scrimmage. He broke the school’s career record for receiving yards in that game, and it was just the first game of the year.

In a victory against Anderson County last Friday, he hauled in 12 passes for 135 yards and caught touchdown passes of 31, 10 and 21 yards from quarterback Johnny Stewart. Among them was a one-handed highlight reel play that was among the best in the nation.

Higgins will be taking his receiving magic to Clemson next year, but he will complete his high school career at the Under Armour All-America Game. Higgins received his honorary jersey Wednesday as the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to Oak Ridge.

“I knew (he would be great) from the first day of practice his freshman year because he had all the tools of a potentially great wide receiver,” coach Joe Gaddis said. “He can run, he can jump, he can catch the ball, he has great hands, run great routes. I knew from Day 1.”

Before Higgins heads to Clemson, his team is currently 4-0, looking to go further than a second-round loss last season in Division I 5A and hoping to make more memories.

“I’m going to miss my teammates,” he said. “When I’m down in practice, they’ll pick me. They’re just great guys.”

Higgins is ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver in the Class of 2017 and the No. 17 player overall by ESPN, and some say his game is similar to a successful NFL receiver who also played in the Under Armour All-America Game.

“A lot of people say I model my game after A.J. Green,” Higgins said. “He’s somebody I like to watch.”

For Gaddis, Higgins’ next step will involve the physical development that happens off the field.

“I think the one thing he hasn’t been able to do in high school because he goes straight from football to basketball to football again is he has missed the opportunity to get in the weight room,” he said. “Once he gets into the weight room in college, he’ll be a 220-pound machine and even greater than he is now. I’m looking forward to that transformation.”
