VIDEO: Ohio goalkeeper AJ Wolford makes three saves in four seconds on penalty kick

AJ Wolford had a busy day in net for Swanton High in Ohio, and while his team fell 6-0 to Archbold, were it not for Wolford, the margin could have been worse.

In the video below, Wolford makes three saves in the span of about four seconds on a penalty kick to stymie Archbold’s scoring attempt.

“That kid’s a monster. The kid came up big, came up big on a PK,” coach Rob Upham told the Swanton Enterprise. “The ball’s bouncing around everywhere. It was ridiculous. Probably the funniest (and) most intense PK we’ve ever had. That kid was definitely the player of the game in my opinion.”

The nation’s longest active 11-man football winning streak can hit 50 games on Friday night.

Valle Catholic in Sainte Genevieve, Mo., has not lost a game since Nov. 23, 2012 to Penney (Hamilton, Mo.) and is 4-0 on the season. The Warriors play Grandview (Hillsboro, Mo.).

Valle has outscored its first four opponents this season 208-58 and has allowed an average of less than 10 points per game over the 49 consecutive victories.

RELATED: Longest active winning streaks entering the 2011 season

What’s even more amazing, Valle is winning without the type of players who are heavily recruited and becoming college football stars.

“Throughout this streak, we’ve only had kid who’s gone on to play college football,” coach Judd Naeger told TEGNA partner KSDK in St. Louis. “Most games we’re not the biggest team. Most games we’re not the fastest team. It’s a willingness to give everything you can for the guy next to you.”

Valle is a school of 135 students and the football program has 45 players listed on the roster. But the school does have a full trophy case with 14 state titles overall, including the last three.

“We want everyone who ever played for Valle to be proud of how we play,” Naeger said.

And when the streak ends?

“At that point we’ll be able to look back and see what we did,” Naeger said, “and we’ll get to be just a normal football team.”

Punter Joe Doyle gets Under Armour All-America jersey after winning spot

Punter Joe Doyle earned his spot in the Under Armour All-America Game with his performance at a Kohl’s Kicking National Invitational Camp in July.

But he didn’t get to don the jersey until Thursday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school, Farragut High in Knoxville, Tenn.

Doyle was honored in front of family, friends and teammates during the ceremony.

At the camp, Doyle had averages of 52 yards per punt and 4.4 seconds of hang time to finish in the top 2 among a group of 200 punters.

“It was the best punters in the country,” he said. “I originally got invited to the U.S. Army All-American (Bowl) at a camp. Then I went to the Under Armour camp and made it. I made my decision right when I got the Under Armour invite and immediately called (representatives from) the Army game to say I was playing in Under Armour.”

He becomes the second Farragut specialist selected for the Under Armour game in two years. Ben Hoffman, now at Eastern Kentucky, was on the roster as a longsnapper last season.

Doyle’s value to Farragut is unquestioned. He put two punts inside the 10-yard line last Friday in a 28-27 victory against Bearden.

His performance at the camp and subsequent invite has also led to an uptick in his recruiting.

A former soccer player, whose brother Aaron was an All-American at Farragut in 2004, doesn’t hold a scholarship offer, but said Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State and Purdue are among FBS schools showing interest.

“Nothing too serious,” said Doyle, who handles kickoff, field goal and punting duties at Farragut. “The school showing the most interest is Tennessee.”

Dimitri Jones had 202 rushing yards Thursday in Frisco (Texas) Liberty’s 31-13 victory against South Garland for its first win of the season.

A total of 83 of those yards came on this play, although the play probably should have been stuffed at the line of scrimmage before Jones spun, shook off a few other tacklers and took it to the end zone.

Liberty also had an 83-yard passing touchdown from Grant Buss to Joshua Wright.

The two states testing HS athletes for steroids turn up few positives

AP GAY TEENS STEROIDS A FILE USA NY

When Texas legislators dismantled the state steroid testing program for high school athletes in May 2015, New Jersey and Illinois were the only states remaining with testing programs.

Texas had the most far-reaching program, having spent $10 million over eight years before the program was disbanded. The first 30,000 tests found only 11 positives. Few saw those numbers as good news of clean athletes or even as proof the program could be a successful deterrent.

New Jersey released its results this week for the 2015-16 school year. Of 497 samples collected, there were zero positives. The 497 included 343 male athletes and 154 female athletes in 13 sports such as football, wrestling, basketball, girls and boys soccer. The tests are administered during championship competitions.

Illinois has had similarly few positives since the testing program began in the 2008-09 school year. The Illinois program started as a postseason testing program but the protocol changed five years ago to make any athlete in a state-sanctioned sport eligible to be tested.

The IHSA said the athletes are selected randomly.

Paul Anzano, outside legislative counsel for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, has said in 10 years of testing, there have only been three positive tests and those were for a banned supplement.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association spends about $100,000 on the program, with half coming from the association and the other from federal grants. A state Assembly committee has sought an additional $45,000 in funding that would allow for testing beyond championships.

Georgia football commit Jake Fromm seems to have the state single-season passing record in his sights.

Fromm from Houston County (Warner Robbins, Ga.) is on pace to hit 5,000 yards by the 12th game of the season. While Georgia schools only play 10 regular season games, Houston County seems on its way to the postseason with a 5-0 start.

The GHSA single-season record of 4,506 was set in 2010 by Hutson Mason of Lassiter High in Marietta. He went on to play for Georgia. The state career record is 13,077 by current Clemson QB Deshaun Watson when he was at Gainesville.

Fromm passed 11,000 yards for his career Thursday night when he threw for 394 yards and six touchdowns in a 63-28 victory against Warner Robins.  He also ran for a TD and had 63 yards on the ground. He had more than 300 yards and five of the six touchdowns with five minutes left in the first half.

He has 25 passing TDs on the season.

Fromm is ranked as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

As the kneeling for the national anthem continues among high school football programs around the nation, the Minneapolis South girls volleyball team opted to kneel as a group before Thursday night’s match.

RELATED: Entire San Francisco area football team kneels for national anthem

An email request to the team’s coach asking why the players decided to kneel was forwarded to the Minneapolis Public Schools Office of Communication. Spokesman Dirk Tedmon issued a statement that said, “We respect our students’ right to freedom of speech as long as their actions do not threaten the safety and security of others.”

The girls volleyball team at South follows several football players at Minneapolis North taking a knee for the national anthem last Friday night.

“It’s a peaceful protest, they were actually, not harming anyone. They decided to do that on their own, so we value that and want to make sure they have the opportunity to do that within our school system,” Michael Walker, head the the Office of Black Male Student Achievement in the Minneapolis Public Schools, told TEGNA partner KARE.

“Obviously we’re not promoting one way or the other but we want to make sure they have the opportunity to share their perspective, and speak their truth, stand up for what they believe in and allow that to happen. As long as it’s not infringing on anyone else’s rights we’re okay with that,” Walker added.

LSU quarterback commit Myles Brennan became the career leading passer in Mississippi history in the first quarter Friday.

Brennan from St. Stanislaus (Bay St. Louis) needed 125 yards to eclipse Dylan Favre, who threw for 12,559 yards during his career at St. Stanislaus.

He got the record out of the way early, throwing for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter against D’Iberville. He finished with 366 yards and five touchdowns in three quarter and now is at 12,801 yards.

“It’s a huge honor and a huge accomplishment,” Brennan told The Sun Herald. “Not just a personal accomplishment, but a team accomplishment.”

Brennan had thrown for 1,645 yards in his first five games of the season and could potentially eclipse his state single-season record of 5,761 that he set as a sophomore. He also threw for a state-record 64 touchdowns that season.

No. 23 Miami Central escapes with victory against Miami Norland

$

Miami Central will head into its showdown against Booker T. Washington without a loss.

The No. 23 Rockets escaped with a 29-27 win against Miami Norland on Friday night.

The Rockets (4-0) face Booker T. next week; BTW was ranked No. 2 in the Super 25 last week before losing to Jackson.

A field goal, a defensive stand and a Willie Davis touchdown run in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter lifted the Rockets to victory despite a late score from Norland.

With eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, an Isaac Addison interception off a screen pass gave Central the ball in Norland territory. The Rockets quickly moved to first-and-goal from the Norland 7-yard line, but settled for a 20-yard field goal for a 23-20 lead.

Norland took over at its own 28-yard line and then struggled with a sack, incomplete pass, penalty and then another incompletion and had to punt.

Moments later, Central got a 49-yard run for a touchdown from Davis, but missed the extra point to increase its lead to 29-20 with 3:52 remaining.

Norland drove the ball down and scored on a TD pass from Carr with 38 seconds remaining and then made the extra point to trim the lead to 29-27, but time was running out. Miami Central recovered an onside kick to end the game.

Central played without its starting quarterback who was serving a one-game suspension.

Earlier, Norland reached the Central 5-yard line and then had to kick a field goal to tie the score 20-20 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

Central has taken the 20-17 lead with 8:24 left in the third quarter on a touchdown run by Seth McGill, but the extra point was blocked.

In the final 30 seconds before halftime, Norland took the lead 17-14 on  12-yard run by Alex Carr. Norland benefited from a turnover that gave it the ball on the Central 31 with 50 seconds remaining.

Norland kicked a 29-yard field for the 14-10 lead with 1:03 remaining in the half.

Miami Central had a 6-0 lead after the first quarter before Carr answered with a TD pass for a 7-6 lead midway through the second quarter. Central answered with TD run by Kynlan Smith and the two-point conversion for a 14-7 lead.

Fallout continues for teams kneeling during the national anthem

As expected, the Watkins Mill football team took a knee during Friday night’s national anthem before the team’s loss at Damascus. The players moved forward with their stated plan to kneel despite threats made to their principal, with the student athletes themselves adamant they are taking a stand in the right arena.

“I think it’s a great place to have the discussion,” Watkins Mill senior Brian McNeary told the Washington Post at a Thursday practice. “Because football is America’s sport. If football players do it, it’s the best way to draw attention.”

Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg, Md., had previously held a pep rally Friday, hours before many of its players kneeled during the national anthem at the game against Damascus.

But the principal has been getting threats by the dozens, the latest is that players’ tires will be slashed. The team remained undaunted.

“Most of the threats are coming from adults and I feel like that’s childish of them, to be honest,” McNeary said. “I think we’re doing a good job of remaining calm and dealing with it and we’re working through it together.”

This is the second time Watkins Mill students have kneeled during a game.

Last week, they did the same against Gaithersburg.

Elsewhere:

  • Maury High in Virginia was among the first schools with players taking a knee last week. About half the Maury players took a knee before Friday night’s game.
