Mass. school cancels varsity and JV games over incident at 'parent-sponsored' event

Officials at Plymouth South High in Massachusetts have canceled the varsity and junior varsity football games because of “inappropriate behavior” at a parent-sponsored event for the players, according to The Boston Globe.

In a statement, Plymouth Schools Superintendent Gary E. Maestas said the incident did not involve drugs or alcohol but did not provide specifics.

The varsity team was scheduled to play Hanover on Friday night and the JV team was scheduled to play Saturday morning. The freshman team’s game against Hanover remains as scheduled for Saturday.

“The administration at Plymouth South believes that the forfeiture of this game is part of a learning process for our student athletes and is apologetic to Hanover High School for this inconvenience,” Maestas said in the statement. He added that administrators met with the players and parents.

Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri told The Globe that the school relayed information to the police, but “there is no police involvement at this time.”

Plymouth South is expected to resume play next week against Scituate.

As we told you earlier in the week, West Orange-Stark (Texas) had not allowed a point in the first four games of the season.

The streak ended Friday night — on a safety — because of a holding penalty in the end zone against Silsbee.

So the defense remains unscathed, running its scoreless streak to 20 quarters after West Orange-Stark finished off a 44-2 victory.

West Orange-Stark entered the game having outscored its opponents 203-0 over the first four games.

In a close game between district rivals, sometimes you have to go to the back of tricks.

That was the case as Cypress Ranch held off Cy-Fair in Texas 24-17 with the go-ahead score coming on this fake fiedl goal attempt.

R.J. Sneed caught the pass and then needed to make a diving leap for the end zone with the tackler closing in.

The result was a score and Cypress Ranch extending its district win streak to 19 games dating back to the 2014 season and putting the Mustangs in the driver’s seat for the district title.

DeSoto, Cedar Hill players join for pregame prayer rather than kneel for anthem

Before the annual Battle of the Belt Line between Cedar Hill and DeSoto in Texas, a number of cheerleaders took a knee for both teams. The anthem was played while the teams were in their locker rooms.

When they got to the field, the teams gathered for a pregame prayer.

“It was about justice,” DeSoto wide receiver BJ Hanspard told EJ Holland of 247Sports. “We didn’t want to kneel for the anthem. We wanted to come together as enemies for prayer.”

Led by a player for each team, the prayer included references to the players being a family, a unit and part of “one nation under you, God.”

DeSoto, ranked No. 6 in the Super 25, won the game 33-18.

The Mansfield (Texas) football team and community mourned the death of teammate John Moran, 15, who died Friday hours after a junior varsity game.

Coach Daniel Mayberry told NBC5 that Mora, a sophomore, died from an “accident.”

An offensive lineman on the JV team, Moran played Thursday night’s game and was not injured. He complained of stomach pains later that night, Mayberry said, and his family took him to the hospital where he died.

The varsity team wore “RIP John” on their wrist tape during Friday night’s game.

According to Fox4, police said Moran died after playfully sparring with a friend. Early indications, according to the report, indicate Moran’s spleen might have been ruptured by a punch.

Police are treating his death as an accident.

“The whole Mansfield district, the whole football team, everyone is just heartbroken and just can’t believe that it happened. He’s in all our prayers,” said teammate Jake Jones told NBC5.

Protests by high school teams around the nation during the national anthem have been in solidarity with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Friday night, Kaepernick was in solidarity with them.

Kaepernick kneeled behind players and coaches from Castlemont in Oakland as they took part in a “die-in” protest, laying on their backs with their hands up during the national anthem.

Kaepernick visited the school a week after the team kneeled and raised their firsts during the national anthem before last week’s game.

Videos and tweets appeared early Saturday on social media. Kaepernick addressed the team and thanked them for their support before the game in video posted by assistant coach Ben Arnold. Excerpts of the speech were posted by the San Jose Mercury News.

“I know situations like a lot of y’all might be in where people don’t treat you the same, they don’t give you that time of day, they don’t give you those opportunities to be the best you can be.

“That’s why I made the decision to do what I did. You all inspired me with what you did, following that and standing up. You all are doing this at a much younger age than what I did. This took me a while to get to this point. And you all are conscious of this at this point in time to make that stand.”

“What’s most important is you look out for one another. This is your family. These are your brothers. I look at all of you as brothers. I see your strength. I see your power, your courage, your confidence. And that’s something you have to be able to speak into each other as well.

“When you talk to him, talk to him with confidence, speak confidence into him. ‘You’re going to play great today. You’re going to be the best player out there. Not just the best player on the field, you’re going to be the best player when you walk off that field and into the real world.”

“You are important. You make a difference. This matters. Everything you do matters. Look out for one another. Lift each other up. That’s what this is about.

“I had to come support y’all because of the same way y’all took a stand, and still with me, I have to come out here and stand with y’all. So I appreciate what y’all did. I love you all. Y’all my brothers. I’m here with you.”

Receiving his U.S. Army All-American Bowl honorary jersey as part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance was only the start of a big day for Calabasas (Calif.) senior Darnay Holmes.

He went out later that night and made a one-handed 54-yard reception in the first quarter and then scored on a beautiful punt return that included a strong stiff arm in Calabasas’ 42-7 victory against El Camino Real.

“It hasn’t sunk in full but it’s a day I want to thank God for and a day that will go down in Calabasas history,” Holmes told the Los Angeles Daily News.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is Jan. 7 in San Antonio and will be broadcast on NBC.

Holmes, ranked as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 11 player overall by the 247Sports Composite, plans to announce his college choice at the game. UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska are among the teams getting consideration from among his 25 reported offers.

Jordan Burroughs, a two-time Olympic wrestler who won gold in London in 2012, had the gym at his high school alma mater named in his honor Saturday.

Burroughs won three district titles, two regional championships and a state title in 2006 at 135 pounds while at Winslow Township High School in South Jersey.

He would win a senior national title as a high schooler before moving to the University of Nebraska, where he won three Big Ten titles and two national titles.  His international career includes three world titles as well as the Olympic gold.

Beyond his remarks during the ceremony, Burroughs posted a thank you on Twitter: “Thank you to Dr. Poteat and the entire Winslow Township Board of Education for today! It’s truly an honor! Jordan Burroughs Gymnasium!”

With four- and five-star athletes all over the field, No. 2 IMG Academy tends to produce highlight-reel plays.

But this one might be the best of the season so far.

Oregon tight end commit Tre’ McKitty extends to his right and reached out with one hand to snag a pass from quarterback Kellen Mond during the Ascenders’ 38-0 victory against Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.).

McKitty had two touchdown catches to give him four in the last two games — a far cry from a junior season in which he only recorded one catch for 22 yards.

First, here’s the catch.

And here’s what he told USA TODAY High School Sports about it on Saturday:

“The ball looked like it was kind of far, so I didn’t think I could get there with two hands,” he said. “So I stuck one out and came down with it.”

Asked whether he felt confident he had secured the catch, McKitty said, “Once it hit my hand, it stuck, I knew I had it.”

Puyallup (Wash.) High School quarterback Nathaniel Holcomb threw 10 touchdown passes Friday night to set the state record for 11-man football.

He joins three players who threw 10 touchdown passes in a game in eight-man football.

The previous record was nine, set in 1998 and equaled in 2014.

Holcomb finished with 451 yards passing in a 77-60 victory against South Kitsap, completing 33 of 53 passes.

The 10 TDS give him 25 through four games along with 1,581 passing yards, according to the Kitsap Sun.

Five of Holcomb’s touchdown passes went to Tallon Yerbury, one short of the state record that was set in 1986 and equaled in 2014.

West Linn's Tim Tawa sets Oregon state record for career touchdown passes

Tim Tawa from West Linn added six more touchdown passes to his career total to break the Oregon state record for career TD passes.

Tawa now has 107, eclipsing the mark set by Central’s Grant Hedrick from 2007 to ’09. The record breaker came on a scramble to his right as he threw across his body and found the receiver heading to the end zone during a 50-7 victory against Tualatin.

He took to Twitter to thank his teammates and assure the team’s followers “We aren’t done yet.” West Linn went 12-2 last season before falling in the 6A state title game to Jesuit.

A Stanford baseball commit since his sophomore year, Tawa set the state record for single-season passing yards last fall as a junior and repeated as the Gatorade Oregon Player of the Year. He also was part of the basketball team that won its fourth consecutive state title last winter.

If No. 22 St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) is to win its first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title since 1989, the path goes through Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) and DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.).

Step 1 was completed Saturday when the Cadets dispatched Good Counsel 39-22 to set up next week’s matchup with the Stags, who are ranked No. 4 in the Super 25.

St. John’s (4-1) ran for 170 yards in the first half and led 23-7 while stifling Good Counsel’s usually prolific run game to 23 yards, according to The Washington Post.

Good Counsel cut the lead to 36-22 with four minutes left in the third quarter, but got no closer.

Keilan Robinson had three touchdowns and 142 yards for St. John’s.

Mohamed Ibrahim finished with 162 yards on 20 carries to lead the Good Counsel ground attack that got going in the second half.

Los Angeles Clippers guard Austin Rivers took to Twitter on Saturday night to bemoan the mixtape culture, where seemingly all basketball players who go to camps or tournaments are featured with their own highlight videos.

Confronted with the notion that he was being too nostalgic at age 24, Rivers backed off a bit.

Rivers was ranked as the No. 1 player overall in the Class of 2011 by Rivals.com coming out of Winter Park, Fla., and was named the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year. He also was a McDonald’s All-American and the Naismith Player of the Year.

He played at Duke before leaving for the NBA, where he was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round and currently plays for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Jose Fernandez’ impact on Baulio Alonso High School in Tampa and the school’s baseball program was so great that his No. 16 was retired less than three years after he graduated.

Among the reasons: As a sophomore, about a year after arriving from Cuba, Fernandez retired 18 consecutive batters in the 2009 Florida championship game to help Alonso win its first state crown.

Fernandez had allowed three runs in the first inning and was dominant from there as Alonso beat Miami Columbus 4-3. Jordan Huchro came in to close out the last batter after Fernandez allowed a single and hit a batter in the seventh.

Fernandez along with two friends died in a tragic boating accident early Sunday morning, officials said.

As a senior, Fernandez was more refined as a pitcher and went 13-1 with a 2.35 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 93 innings. He also threw two no-hitters as Alonso again won the state title after reaching the state semifinals the previous season.

Shortly after his senior year, he was drafted by the Marlins with the 14th overall pick in 2011.

He was named National League Rookie of the Year in 2013 and had his jersey retired the next February in a ceremony attended by teachers, coaches and former teammates.

“It’s something you always got in your heart,” Fernandez, then 21, told the Tampa Bay Times of his high school.

If you thought Alabama was efficient in its 48-0 victory against Kent State, check out the numbers on Crimson Tide quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa, ranked as the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the Class of 2017, was 41 for 47 passing for a school-record 493 yards and five touchdowns as Saint Louis (Honolulu) beat ‘Iolani 42-24. Consider that he was 30 for 33 in the first half before two deep balls as time was ticking down before halftime.

Despite throwing his first interception of the season, he also eclipsed 7,000 career passing yards as Saint Louis improved to 5-0. He has 7,192 yards.

VIDEO: Punt attempt by Hill School (Pa.) turns into wild 85-yard run for TD

Talk about making the most of a tough situation.

After a three-and-out and backed inside its 20, The Hill School (Pottstown, Pa.) set up for a punt.

The combination of a low snap that bounced and two defenders quickly getting through the upbacks to converge on the punter looked like trouble. But the ball somehow ended up in the hands of Jack Bowen.

And 85 yards — and a few nifty moves later — Bowen was in the end zone for an 85-yard TD.

“When the one kid hit our punter, the ball popped out and right into my hands,” said Bowen, originally from West Caldwell, N.J. “From there I just did what I normally do and ran.”

Hill lost 23-19 to Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, Pa.), but Bowen has established himself as a big-play guy early in the season.

Unique plays are nothing new for Bowen. Check out this one from last October.
