A junior from Euclid High in Ohio died Sunday after an injury during Friday night’s football game against Solon, the school district said in a statement.

Andre Jackson was listed as a fullback and linebacker on the team roster.

Here is the statement:

Today, Euclid High School junior Andre L. Jackson passed away following an injury sustained during Friday night’s football game. Andre was a hardworking student-athlete that brought smiles to all those with whom he came in contact. The Euclid City School District would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the Jackson family during this horrific time.

Circumstances surrounding the injury were not available, although he was taken from the field to the hospital.

A cause of death has not been determined.

Euclid lost the game 33-13.

Students and community members gathered on the field Sunday night as word spread of Jackson’s death.

Jackson is the third football player nationally to die since the season began, according to USA TODAY Sports records.

Chase Lightfoot, 17, from Shadow Creek in Manvel, Texas, died Sept. 10 of a rare heart condition, according to the autopsy report. The medical examiner in Bexar County said Lightfoot was born with abnormal cardiac arteries.

Lewis Simpkins, a 14-year-old sophomore from River Bluff High (Lexington, S.C.), died Aug. 10 after collapsing at practice. The Lexington County coroner said the autopsy results were inconclusive.

Andrew Thomas concedes that playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is not like being in the Army, but it’s a chance to show appreciation for those who serve.

“I like the Army part of it,” Thomas from Pace Academy (Atlanta) said Tuesday. “It seems like I am not directly serving my country but I am indirectly getting to honor and support those by playing in something like this.”

Thomas was all about appreciation as the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school to present him with an honorary jersey in front of family, friends and teammates. The video above shows the remarks he made, without virtue of notes.

The Army Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

Thomas, a Georgia commit, is ranked as the No. 11 offensive tackle, No. 6 player in Georgia and No. 58 player overall by the 247Sports Composite.

Tarik Black knows what it’s like to be wanted.

Look no further than the video and social media campaign started by Michigan commit Corey Malone-Hatcher posted in an effort to help entice Black to join the Wolverines’ recruiting class.

Black also is wanted by the organizers of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl who brought the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance to Cheshire Academy in Connecticut to present Black with his honorary jersey on Tuesday.

Black, ranked as the No. 17 receiver in the 247Sports Composite, plans to announce his decision at the Army Bowl. Michigan remains high on his list, along with Auburn, Alabama, Stanford, Miami, Texas A&M and UCLA among others.

An assistant football coach at Hampton High in Arkansas has died after collapsing at practice, the Ouachita County Coroner told the Arkansas Democrat and Gazette.

Jorre McMahan was pronounced dead at the Camden County Medical Center. He was just 26 years old.

A cause of death has not been determined.

A former running back at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and high school star at Bauxite, McMahan was assisting head coach Wes Ables in the program’s return at Hampton. The school did not field a team last year but is 4-0 this season.

It is likely the team’s game against Camden will be rescheduled and the team will not practice Wednesday.

The loss was recognized by the Bauxite athletic programs on Twitter. McMahan was the son of the former mayor of Bauxite, Johnny McMahan.

His college coach, Hud Jackson, posted this message on Twitter:

Power forward Billy Preston, a top 15 player in the Class of 2017, has decided to open his recruitment, he told ZagsBlog.com.

Preston is being actively recruited by Indiana, Syracuse, Maryland, Kansas and USC and he is scheduled to take an official visit to Kansas this weekend for “Late Night in the Phog.”

“After talking with my family and starting my senior year at Oak Hill Academy, I have decided to open my recruitment up and explore what schools would best fit for me as a student-athlete,” Preston told ZagsBlog. “I am looking forward to taking official visits and have no time table for making my final decision.”

Preston, a native of Los Angeles, spent last season at Advanced Prep in Dallas and will play his senior year at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.

Down to 11 healthy players, North Stokes (N.C.) ends varsity football season

Citing a lack of healthy varsity-level players, North Stokes High (Danbury, N.C.) has decided to forfeit the remainder of its varsity football games for the season, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The team was 0-6 to start the season and had been outscored by an average of 33.5 points per game. The forfeits will give the program a record of 0-11 for the third time in the last four years.

North Stokes will continue with its JV program.

North Stokes is far from the only program nationally that is feeling the numbers crunch and being forced to forfeit or end the season early.

RELATED: HS football participation numbers are up because of more girls

Athletic director Michael Richardson said the school had been shuffling players between varsity and JV in order to play the games, but said that option became less realistic and safe as the season continued.

“We have to put the safety of the kids first,” Richardson told the newspaper. “And moving JV kids up to just keep the varsity program alive is putting those kids at risk and it’s not something we were comfortable doing for the rest of the season.”

“This week we were going to play a Mount Airy team, who is arguably one of the top teams in the state, with only 11 kids.  And that’s not something we were ready to do, and it’s not something that the kids were necessarily looking forward to either.”

Richardson said he believes disbanding varsity football is only a temporary measure and the team intends to resume varsity next fall.

Under Armour All-American Alijah Vera-Tucker goes from audience to honoree

$

Alijah Vera-Tucker was in the audience at this time last year when Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) teammate Camilo Eifler received his honorary jersey for the Army All-American Bowl.

This time, Vera-Tucker was in the spotlight and the jersey was for the Under Armour All-America Game, which is scheduled for Jan. 1 in Orlando.

“It was a nervous feeling, but it’s also a great feeling when you think about what you are being awarded and your teammates and family are looking at you and are proud of you,” Vera-Tucker said Wednesday after the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

“It was a really cool experience,” he added of the ceremony. “It is an honor to get this opportunity and being able to play with and against the top athletes on ESPN.”

Ranked as the No. 9 offensive tackle and No. 45 overall in the Class of 2017 by ESPN.com, Viera-Tucker is a lineman to the end. And being 6-4 and 290 doesn’t hurt, either.

“Freshman year, my first year of football, I was immediately placed on the line and I’ve been there ever since,” he said. “I just love it.”

That love of the game — along with his speed off the ball and solid footwork in pass blocking — is among the things that attracted numerous programs. He chose USC in early August and said he doesn’t intend to take official visits to any other programs.

“What attracted me was how it immediately felt like home,” he said. “There was just a feeling of brotherhood with USC and the coaching staff and their willingness to work with me.”

Before he leaves Northern California for Southern California, he has a trip to Orlando for New Year’s Day.

I’m going to try and enjoy it, but I also want to try to learn as much as can from all the coaches during practice and the game to help me in my future,” he said.

Thon Maker's 6-11 cousin joins Prolific Prep North in Canada

After spending last season at Chaminade Prep (West Hills, Calif.), Makur Maker has arrived in Canada where his famous cousins made their names.

Makur, a cousin of NBA first-round pick Thon Maker and younger brother Matur, will play at the new Prolific Prep North program in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Thon played at Orangeville Prep before being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in June. Matur, a 6-9 forward that has garnered interest from top college teams and was at Orangeville, will join Makur at Prolific Prep North.

Makur is a 6-11 prospect in the Class of 2020 who averaged 9.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game at Chaminade.

Makur only started playing basketball four years ago, but his skills have quickly accelerated. He remains raw, but he has size and athleticism.

“He’s a world-class athlete,” says Anthony “Huggy” Otto, director of basketball operations for Prolific Prep North told NorthPoleHoops.com. “He can run the court like a 6’4 guard. He’s not even aware of all the things he is capable of, after 15 minutes in the gym I helped him realize he can dunk from the free throw line with ease. He had no idea.”

Top-ranked Mater Dei falls in girls volleyball to Santa Margarita

The No. 1 volleyball team in the USA TODAY Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Super 25 has fallen.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), which has been No. 1 since the preseason, lost to No. 7 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) on Wednesday, falling in a three-set sweep, 25-11, 25-18, 25-23.

“It was a fun environment,” Santa Margarita coach Katy Daly told the Orange County Register. “We played with high energy and we didn’t let things rattle us that we have in the past. We played with the confidence that nothing was going to stop us, and I’m proud of the girls.”

Meghan McClure had 15 kills and Devon Chang  had 33 assists for Santa Margarita (19-4).  Mater Dei fell to 14-1.

The two teams meet again Oct. 20 at Mater Dei. They split their two meetings last season.

“It was not our best match,” Mater Dei coach Dan O’Dell told the Register. “Santa Margarita was awesome, they were digging everything, they were in system a lot. Devon (Chang) did a good job spreading the ball around and they gave us a lot of trouble.

“We’ve been good all year winning the serve-pass battle, and they just completely out-served us. They did a lot to frustrate us and made life tough.”

Archbishop Murphy (Wash.) has been so dominant that opponents are forfeiting

Archbishop Murphy (Everett, Wash.) was scheduled to play Sultan on Friday night, but instead Murphy will accept its second consecutive forfeit victory, according to the Everett Herald.

On the field, the Wildcats are 3-0 and have outscored opponents 173-0, but they will be 5-0 by the time the weekend is over.

The reason: Both Sultan and South Whidbey, which forfeited last week, say that their schools are are significant disadvantages in terms of team and roster size making it unwise — and unsafe — to play the games.

In perhaps a reflection of the larger issue between public and private schools, Murphy is a private Catholic school that draws players from a larger geographic area than its public school conference rivals and the program’s success has made it attractive to top athletes. Murphy is a 2A school, but is one of the top teams in the state regardless of size.

Sultan athletic director Scott Sifferman told the Herald that the decision to forfeit was a difficult one to make, as it should be, but noted at a parent meeting, “the parents collectively told us they did not want us to play the game.” He added, “Some parents told us, ‘I’m not going to let my kid be on the field.’”

Cascade Conference president Jason Frederick told the Herald that Murphy’s remaining opponents intend to play the game, but that it would be up to each school to determine how to proceed, especially if a school is hit by injuries in a given week.

The forfeits also call into question whether Murphy will remain in the conference with discussions ongoing about potentially moving to a more competitive league.

The last time St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) beat DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) was 1994.

The Cadets, who are 4-1 and ranked No. 22 in the Super 25, have a chance to end that streak Friday against No. 4 DeMatha, which is 5-0.

Both coaches says the game will be won in the trenches and both teams have quarterbacks who are efficient and can combine the run and the pass.

DeMatha quarterback Beau English, an Air Force commit, has been particularly accurate, with two games where he didn’t have an incomplete pass. St. John’s quarterback Kasim Hill, a Maryland commit, has been as effective running the ball as passing.

According to USA TODAY High School Sports’ score predictor, DeMatha has the advantage.

Oklahoma powers Jenks and Broken Arrow split last season’s two meetings.

Broken Arrow won in the regular season 35-34 with a fourth-quarter touchdown to snap Jenks’ 54-game home winning streak. But Jenks answered back, winning the state title game 35-14.

Jenks has won four of the last five and 11 of the last 13 so it could be a tough go for Broken Arrow to win in consecutive years, but that’s why they play the games.

According to USA TODAY High School Sports’ score predictor, Jenks is the favorite.

Deron Irving-Bey, a four-star defensive end from Southwestern Commencement Academy, received his honorary jersey as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance in a ceremony Thursday at his high school in Flint, Mich.

“Throughout this whole process, I just feel like another kid from Flint,” Irving-Bey said. “With accomplishing all this, it was unexpected. All I knew was the grind.

“All this happening has just been a blessing.”

Irving-Bey, who, it should be mentioned, is unfailingly polite, said he’s looking forward to the Army Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 7, mainly because of the players he’ll go up against.

“I always want competition, because if I don’t have competition, I won’t get better,” he said. “Just being a part of the top players in the country is a big blessing, and now playing against them, in a national event that’s going to broadcast all over? I can’t ask for anything more right now.”

The four-star recruit will visit Michigan this weekend and is also considering Michigan State, Tennessee, Maryland, and others.

And while all-star games are apt to be less-than-competitive affairs, Irving-Bey doesn’t intend to approach this matchup any differently.

“When I go to the game, I’m gonna do what I always do, just play my heart out.”

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) coach Kenny Sanchez has been named head coach for the U.S. U-19 National Team in the inaugural North American Championship, scheduled for Jan. 28 in Orlando.

“It’s a great honor to represent the United States and to coach some of the top football-playing student-athletes in the country,” Sanchez said in a statement. “There’s a rich tradition of success with our Under-19 National Team and those who have led it. I look forward to continuing that tradition this January in Orlando.”

Sanchez is 20-0 in his season-plus as head coach of the top-ranked Gaels and won the Super 25 championship last season. After serving as Gorman’s defensive coordinator, he succeeded his brother, Tony, as head coach when Tony was hired at UNLV.

No. 1 Bishop Gorman hosts No. 9 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) on Friday in a nationally televised game.

Previous coaches for the U-19 team include Chuck Kyle (Cleveland St. Ignatius), Tom Westerberg (Barbers Hill, Texas) and Steve Specht (Cincinnati St. Xavier).
