Jerry Jeudy follows future Alabama receivers to Under Armour All-America Game

0
0

There has been a pipeline of elite wide receivers from South Florida to Alabama. Among them are the Oakland Raiders’ Amari Cooper and current Alabama star Calvin Ridley.

Jerry Jeudy is next in that line, and one thing all three have in common on their way from high school to Tuscaloosa is an appearance in the Under Armour All-America Game. Cooper played in 2012, Ridey in 2015 and Jeudy will play in 2017.

Jeudy received his honorary jersey Tuesday as the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to Deerfield Beach for a ceremony with family, friends and teammates.

“I feel like I can do the same things Calvin Ridley and Amari Cooper have done,” Jeudy said. “Both played in the Under Armour All-American Game. Both had special seasons at Alabama and I feel like I can do the same.”

Jeudy, the No. 3 wide receiver in the class according to ESPN.com, committed to Alabama in late July. He has yet to take an official visit to campus, but is looking forward to getting there. For now, he watches from afar.

“I follow them closely,” he said. “I watch every game and I could see myself in there. I watch how they use their receivers in the game and see how I can make a difference.”

Deerfield Beach is 4-1 and Jeudy has nine touchdowns in five games after posting 10 last season.

Asked what separates him from other receivers, he says, “I feel like my yards after the catch, my ability to locate the ball at a high angle, my speed, my route running. I know how to get away from DBs.”

And he doesn’t care who those DBs are.

“Whoever they step in front of me, I gotta do what I gotta do,” he said. “You have to prove that you are the best and go out and compete.”

Foster Sarell is the No. 1 football recruit in the nation, according to 247Sports.

And that puts a bit of a target on him when he’s attending events with the top players from around the country.

Sarell, an offensive tackle, received his honorary U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey Tuesday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to Graham-Kapowsin High School in Washington state.

The Army Bowl is Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

“To be the No. 1 player in the country is amazing, it’s unfathomable and it’s such a blessing,” Sarell told 247Sports. “I’m excited to go down there ranked No. 1, but to me I’m just going to disregard the ranking and go there and work my butt off and play the best football I can whether I’m ranked No. 1 or a thousand.”

Sarell also said he will be honored to play for the military. His grandfather, Charles Geltz, is a Vietnam veteran who served in multiple locations but retired at Fort Lewis, Wash. Geltz plans to be in San Antonio for the Army Bowl.

The 6-foot-6 ½, 311-pound Sarell has been busy with official visits and will be at Notre Dame this weekend for the game against Stanford. Sarell took an unofficial visit to Stanford earlier this season and has an official visit scheduled for December. He also plans to be at the Iron Bowl to visit Alabama for the showdown against Auburn. He also has been to Washington for an unofficial and will make an official visit later in the season. Nebraska also is high on his list. Current Nebraska coach Mike Riley was the first to offer Sarell when Riley was the coach at Oregon State.

Alabama commit Akial Byers is lone Arkansas player in Under Armour All-America Game

Akial Byers goes to high school about a mile from the stadium that the Arkansas Razorbacks call home in Fayetteville. But the defensive tackle’s college destination is Alabama.

Before he gets to Tuscaloosa, though, Byers will play in the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando on Jan. 1. The Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to town Tuesday to preset him with an honorary jersey.

He is the only player from the state scheduled to play in the game.

Byers, 6-4 and 275 pounds, is rated as the No. 7 defensive tackle in the Class of 2017 by ESPN.com and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Arkansas.

Byers committed to Alabama in July after an unofficial campus visit.

Army All-American linebacker Nate McBride ready for 'the big stage'

Vidalia (Ga.) linebacker Nate McBride has long been in the spotlight as a high school star in the state of Georgia, but he wants to be more than that when he participates in the Army Bowl Jan. 7 in San Antonio.

“I want to be able to bring out my talent and make a name for myself on the big stage, not just high school football,” McBride said.

“I definitely want to play well, but I just want to remember the moment and not have to worry about anything but playing football. I’m ready to see Texas and ready to see a Spurs game—that’s going to be awesome. I’m excited to see all the men and women from the army sitting in the stands, and I’m ready to represent the U.S. Army and Vidalia, my family, my team and myself. Definitely looking forward to a good time.”

McBride received his honorary U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey Wednesday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

“It was awesome,” McBride said. “My family was there—it was a blessing. It was a lot of fun.”

One of the top-ranked inside linebackers in the country, McBride too a trip out west last weekend to see Oregon.

“It was beautiful,” he said. “The scenery was perfect, the football facilities were amazing, and the coaches and players were waiting with open arms. It’s a family-oriented team, and that really stuck out to me.”

Although McBride hails from the South, he cam away very impressed with his trip to Eugene. He said the Ducks and the Georgia Bulldogs are his leaders right now, with Alabama and Auburn in the mix.

And how does a kid from Georgia become interested in Oregon? McBride explained.

“It has always been my favorite team,” he said. “I’ve always liked the speed and the swag, and they’re top-notch when it comes to those things. And having been out there and seen how family-based it is and how close the players are—which I like—it just makes it that much better.”

POLL: Vote for Super 25 Game of the Week, Oct. 14-15

Arizona adds to monster 2017 class, adds four-star Brandon Randolph

0
0

One of the top shooters in the class of 2017 will play next season under Sean Miller. Brandon Randolph, a four-star recruit according to 247Sports, committed to Arizona Wednesday.

The news was first reported by Scout.com’s Evan Daniels.

“After taking all my visits and obviously they were my last visit, I just had a good feeling going into it,” Randolph told Scout. “It was a great atmosphere there with great academics and I guess it was just the best fit. It had everything we were looking for.”

Randolph had narrowed his choices to four about a month ago, including Syracuse, Wake Forest, and Oregon along with Arizona.

He’s Miller’s third commitment in the class of 2017, joining five-star DeAndre Ayton and four-star Alex Barcello.

LSU lands Brandon Rachal, its second four-star in class of 2017

0
0

After a disappointing 2015-16 campaign, Johnny Jones and his LSU coaching staff have done surprisingly well recruiting for the class of 2017.

That got even better Wednesday, when four-star small forward Brandon Rachal committed to the Tigers.

“I took my visit recently it just hit me that this might be the place for me,” Rachal told Scout.com. “It just felt great. Even though it’s not home, it feels like home to me.”

Rachal joins fellow four-star Galen Alexander as LSU commits in the class of 2017.

“I want to come in and be a killer,” he told Scout. “I’m going to be good on defense and offensively I’m so versatile. I think I can play and defend any position on the court so I think being able to do that and surrounding me with other players that are versatile can open up a lot of what we do as a team and caused problems for different schools.”

Nebraska QB commit Tristan Gebbia on 10,000 yards, 100 TDs milestone and more

0
0

Nebraska quarterback commit Tristan Gebbia has an impressive stat line for his senior season: 2,146 yards, 25 touchdowns, five interceptions and 7-0.

The 7-0 is the record for Calabasas (Calif.), entering its bye week. Calabasas returns to action Oct. 21 against Newbury Park, which is 5-2.

Early in that game, Gebbia is likely to join an elite list of California quarterbacks with 10,000 career passing yards and 100 touchdowns. According to CalHi Sports, he will be only the seventh in state history to combine to hit those marks.

Gebbia is ranked No. 8 among pro-style quarterbacks according to the 247Sports Composite and is coming off another efficient performance in a 46-16 victory against Westlake. With Nebraska coach Mike Riley at the game, Gebbia was 22-for-25 for 261 yards and three passing touchdowns along with a rushing touchdown in a bit more than a half of action.

USA TODAY High School Sports spoke with Gebbia about the milestone, his team and his future.

USATHSS: What does potentially joining this small group of seven quarterback with 10,000 yards and 100 TDs mean to you?

Gebbia: It’s an honor to be in that select few in a state that has produced so many great quarterbacks. But most of all it’s a tribute to my coaches and the players around me. I just play point guard they do the heavy lifting

USATHSS: Why do you think you have been so successful this season?

Gebbia: My team has worked with me for years now and me and my coaches are in sync. The sky is the limit for us as a unit.

USATHSS: What was it like for you to know that Coach Riley was at the game?

Gebbia: To have my future head coach watch me play was big, obviously, because I wanted to impress him but I just took it play by play and just focused on winning and everything took care of itself.

USATHSS: What are the areas you are focusing on between now and college that you want to work on?

Gebbia: I want to prepare myself mentally and be able to retain information and execute at an elite level.

Army All-American Cam Akers calls selection 'a tremendous honor'

As a freshman, Cam Akers played in the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl in San Antonio. It was then when he dreamed of making a trip back to the Alamodome years later for another game featuring many of the best football players in the country.

Akers’ vision was realized Wednesday.

The Clinton star received his honorary jersey for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played on Jan. 7 in San Antonio. Akers’ jersey presentation was part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance.

“It’s a tremendous honor for me and my family, and the town of Clinton,” Akers said. “This was always something I wanted to do and to able to accomplish it is truly a blessing.”

Akers joins fellow Mississippians Morton wide receiver D.D. Bowie, who received his jersey on Tuesday, and Starkville linebacker Willie Gay, who got his last week.

“It’s just going out and competing against the best 100 players in the nation,” Akers said. “That’s what it’s all about, being able to compete at the highest level. At this point, that’s the highest level and I am just ready to compete.”

Akers may commit at the Army Bowl — if he knows where he wants to go by then, he said.

There is no shortage of attractive choices for Akers, the No. 1 rated player in Mississippi and the state’s only five-star football prospect. Akers is also rated as the No. 8 overall 2017 player in the country by the 247Sports Composite.

Akers will attend the Alabama-Tennessee game Saturday in Knoxville. His first official visit is set for Alabama on Oct. 22 when the Crimson Tide hosts Texas A&M. That is the only official visit Akers has locked in at this point.

Along with Alabama and Tennessee, Akers has been linked to Ole Miss, Florida State, Ohio State, Georgia and LSU. He has not ruled out any of those options — or any others, for that matter.

In regards to Ole Miss, his home state option, Akers said the Rebels’ staff has told him they would feature him heavily in the offense and that they would like him as an elite running back in their high-powered offense. Ole Miss is still in the midst of an NCAA investigation into its football program, however, and Akers said he will have to see how that plays out.

For now, he is dominating at the high school level for the undefeated Arrows (7-0) while playing quarterback. He will play running back at the Army Bowl and at the next level.

Akers has completed 73 of 115 passes for 1,480 yards with 14 touchdowns against three interceptions. He has also rushed for 778 yards and 14 touchdowns on 86 carries.

Clinton, which is ranked No. 1 in the Super 10, will host No. 8 Northwest Rankin (6-2), in what should be a good Region 2-6A game.

“We just see another ballgame because that’s how we have to approach it to be successful,” Akers said. “We know everybody is out for us because we have the target on our back and we don’t shy away from it because we want to live up to what we have been doing and want to continue to do it.”

Juanita (Kirkland, Wash.) star Salvon Ahmed, the No. 64 overall recruit in the country received his honorary U.S. Army All-American Game jersey today. He is the No. 1 athlete prospect, according to 247Sports, and recently committed to Washington.

Ahmed and fellow Husky commit, Central (Independence, Ore.) defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu, at the Army Bowl.

Where he plays at the next level will be interesting to watch: He could play running back or cornerback.

His physical skills are obvious. He ran a 4.32 laser-timed 40-yard dash at The Opening Final in July, which equaled the fastest time at the event.

Score Predictor: Who wins the Texas showdown between Allen and Guyer?

No. 4 Allen (Texas) is the highest ranked team in the state according to the Super 25, and rightfully so. The Eagles have some impressive wins, including an opening victory over Alabama power Hoover. No one has come with a score of Allen, but the Eagles figure to get a challenge this week.

Guyer (Denton, Texas) has just a single loss, which came against No. 7 DeSoto.

Michigan commit Kai-Leon Herbert feels love from his school at Under Armour All-America Game event

When it came time to honor Kai-Leon Herbert as an Under Armour All-American, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) didn’t mess around.

“Our school did a great job with it,” Herbert said. “Mr. (William) Laurie, the founder of American Heritage loves these sorts of events. Everyone was all in — the football team, the band, everyone.”

Herbert, an offensive tackle committed to Michigan, received his honorary jersey during a visit from the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance on Thursday.

“It’s a really huge honor,” Herbert said of his selection to the Jan. 1 game in Orlando. “As a youth, you play in little league and you dream of playing in the Under Armour game or the Army game. Just to be selected is an honor.”

Herbert, who is 6-5 and 284 pounds, knows about doing things big. When it came to his college commitment, the expectation was that he would remain in state at Florida, but he chose the Wolverines. “It just felt like Michigan is my home,” he said.

Herbert is planning to take his official visit to Michigan next week. He said he is still talking with his family about whether he will take visits to any other schools.

He made his college announcement in partnership with Bleacher Report in a video based off “The Walking Dead.”

“I had only watched a couple of seasons but got hooked on it,” he said. “When they told me the idea, I thought it was kinda cool. No one had done that before so it was good.”

“The Walking Dead” beat out the other idea, which was based on “The Bachelor” and would have hand Herbert on dinner dates with mascots of his top schools.

“I really don’t know anything about that show,” he said.

Before he gets to Ann Arbor, though, he is hoping to lead American Heritage to the state title. The school won the 5A state title in 2013 and ’14, but was knocked off in the playoffs last year by Hallandale.

“We’re really coming together,” he said. “If we keep at it and keep the turnover ratio to a minimum, this is going to be a really good season. We’re undefeated in the regular season and I feel if we continue to play the way we’ve been playing and up the tempo, we’re going to get a state championship again.

“As for my year, I’m improving every week. I had one down week and I’ve learned from that to keep getting better and working on my technique.”
