No. 2 IMG Academy plays a national schedule, and the Ascenders have done just fine. IMG has defeated three teams ranked in the Super 25: Grayson (Ga.), No. 13 Centennial (Corona, Calif.), and No. 21 St. John’s College (Washington D.C.).

Oxbridge hasn’t lost yet, either, but the ThunderWolves’ schedule hasn’t been quite as stout.

A year ago, the choice was Rashard Lawrence, now at LSU.

This year, the honoree is Phidarian Mathis.

Mathis, ranked as the No. 3 defensive tackle and No. 20 prospect overall by ESPN.com, received his Under Armour All-America jersey Thursday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to high school.

Mathis was in the audience last year when the tour visited Neville. This time, he he was the focus as family, friends and teammates joined him.

“It’s a blessing,” Mathis told SEC Country on Thursday. “To see Rashard doing it, I had a feeling of how this was going to feel. Now I got my own taste of it and I’ve got to take it and run.”

Alabama, LSU and TCU are the schools pushing hardest for Mathis, who intends to make his choice after the high school season but won’t wait until the Jan. 1 game in Orlando.

No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) kept its perfect season alive in convincing fashion with a 38-0 victory against Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach) on Thursday.

With three touchdowns, IMG quarterback Kellen Mond set the school record for total touchdowns in a season. Mond has 15 passing scores and eight rushing touchdowns, which is a program record for rushing scores by a quarterback. Shea Patterson set the school record last season with 21 total touchdowns (18 passing and three rushing).

The Ascenders (6-0) scored on their first possession on a 9-yard run by Mond and added touchdowns in the second quarter on a Mond 50-yard pass to Emmanuel Greene and a 21-yard run by Asa Martin. Backup quarterback Zach Annexstad capped the scoring with a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.

VIDEO: Okla. team's wild, game-winning two-point conversion may be the play of the year

This is probably not how the Charles Page (Okla.) Sandites drew up their game-winning play.

As seen in the video above from MaxPreps, the Sandites, down 25-24 (ignore the score graphic) to Muskogee (Okla.), decided to go for two in the game’s closing seconds.

That’s when the magic started.

Hunter Greathouse’s pass was batted down, but he had the presence of mind to 1) gather the ball and keep the play alive, 2) not throw it, as that would be a penalty, and 3) lateral the ball to Josh Taber, who pinballs his way into the endzone.

“My guys don’t ever quit,” Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard told the Tulsa World. “That’s what I told them at halftime. They don’t ever quit, no matter what the score is.”

Or, apparently, no matter how dead a play appears to be.

Gulliver Prep (Miami) standout running back Robert Burns was awarded his Under Armour All-American jersey Friday at his school.

The ceremony was held as part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance.

Burns, a Miami commit, is the second player selected to the Under Armour All-American Game from Gulliver Prep in as many years. Dionte Mullins made the squad last year.

“The part of the game I’m looking forward to the most is all the gear of course, but more importantly the players and building those relationships that will last over the next few years.”

For his part, Burns seems pretty stoked.

Defense propels No. 14 Colerain to victory

Autumn announced its arrival with the first chilly Friday night of the season, and Fairfield (Ohio) figured it would give unbeaten Colerain (Cincinnati) a tough test to ensure the Cardinals were still paying attention.

Despite four turnovers, No. 14 Colerain passed the test, 28-0, and captured its 57th consecutive Greater Miami Conference victory.

A battle between the top-two defenses in the GMC lived up to the billing, but Colerain pulled away behind its defense which held the Indians without a first down in the second half until the two-minute mark. Colerain held Fairfield to 147 total yards and forced four turnovers of its own.

“It was the No. 1 and 2 defenses,” said Colerain coach Tom Bolden. “No disrespect to Fairfield, but you clearly saw who the No. 1 defense was. Our kids fly around, they get after it and they play with some vicious intentions. We were getting after it. It got a little chippy at times but that’s what football is all about. Hats off to coach Krause and Fairfield, they’ve got a lot of great players.”

Possessions were at a premium all night as both teams were happy to play defense and work their respective ground games.

It was an Amir Riep interception, diving to secure a deflected pass over the middle, that setup Colerain’s first scoring drive. Sophomore quarterback Deante Smith-Moore – who got the start but alternated with junior Gunnar Leyendecker in his first action since Week 3 after injury – led the Cardinals on a 60-yard drive, capped by a 6-yard touchdown run by J.J. Davis.

Behind a 7-0 lead at the break, Colerain stormed out of the locker room to start the second half with a quarterback sneak from Smith-Moore to cap a 9-play, 70-yard drive.

Fairfield did little offensively to threaten Colerain. Every time the Indians faced third-and-long, which was often, Colerain dialed up pressure and made a play.

“This place is ecstatic – the energy here is amazing. When you come out and play like we did it shows the work we put in and we’ve put in a lot of work,” said senior linebacker Kyle Bolden. “It boosts your confidence to shut a team out. Fairfield has some dudes.”

Colerain senior workhorse Monalo Caldwell got going in the second half. He made it 21-0 with a 7-yard run and finished with 141 yards on 21 carries. The Cardinals racked up 256 yards on the ground.

“We can close our eyes and think about (how Week 1 felt like yesterday),” said coach Bolden. “It’s been that long. Finally the weather’s changed, it feels like Week 8. It’s getting wild. We’re getting to the point where we’re getting everyone healthy.

“Gunnar came back and played a little bit. He’s still not 100 percent but it was good to see him get some work. He’ll be better next week. Deante kept doing what he’s doing. Our wing backs keep getting better. Defensively, we’re gonna be there. These kids have a lot of games under their belt. We’re physical, we’re fast and we’re gonna keep getting better offensively.”

Senior safety Keontae Jones made it 28-0 when he returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

“It felt great to shut a team out. Our defense plays hard and we play smart,” said Keontae Jones. “I just had to follow my blockers (on punt return). I saw Amir in front of me and I knew he had my back; Javon (Hicks) had my back, I just had to trust them.”

Kyle Bolden actually secured his first career interception and took a healthy hit from Fairfield’s Jack Carman after a big return.

“I wasn’t gonna go down – that’s just not my style,” said Kyle. “It was worth it. First pick of my career here. It was special to do it here in front of the home fans.”

Coach Bolden said, “I’m thinking the whole time, ‘Oh my god, just go down … that’s a big man (in Carman) and he can move.”

Because of a Mason loss to Lakota East, Colerain actually clinched a share of its 17th consecutive GMC title Friday night. A win next Friday at Lakota West would give it to the Cardinals outright.

“I wanna make sure we’re taking care of the football and we’re 100 percent healthy,” Bolden said of his hopes for the final two weeks of the regular season. “I want the defense to keep doing what they’re doing.”

The record holder for most consecutive 8-man football victories has reached another remarkable feat: 100 straight wins. But it probably did not come as Pahranagat Valley, from tiny Alamo, Nev. had hoped.

Indian Springs opted to forfeit. The result was likely to be lopsided had the teams played with Indian Springs winless on the season.

The Panthers already had the longest 8-man streak for consecutive victories in football history.

By reaching triple digits,Pahranagat Valley joins only Northern California power De La Salle (151) and Charlotte Independence (109) with a streak to have stretched to at least 100 games.

Arizona commit Braxton Burmeister set the career record for passing yards in the CIF San Diego section on Friday night, adding to his list of section record.

Burmeister from La Jolla Country Day threw for 224 yards in a 63-3 victory over Francis Parker  (San Diego) to give him 9,164 passing yards. The previous record was held by Grossmont’s Anthony Lawrence (2011-13).

“I looked up some of the top passers down through the years and it’s a cool thing to be mentioned with them,” Burmeister told the San Diego Union Tribune. “I grew up at this school, so we just decided to stay here. I’m trying not to think about all these records, just concentrate on winning.”

Burmeister, ranked as the No. 10 dual threat quarterback in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite, also owns the section record for total offense with 11,744 and touchdown passes with 103. He is 19 shy of the record for career completions, a mark that could fall in next week’s game against Bishop’s (La Jolla).

La Jolla is 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Coastal League.

Katy (Texas) running back Deondrick Glass might not have had eye-popping numbers in yards that he’s often had this season, given that Katy beat Morton Ranch 68-9, including a school-record 61 first-half points.

But you can’t be much more efficient than this: His last five carries all resulted in touchdowns.

That’s right, the last five times he touched the ball finished in the end zone.

Glass, who also was celebrating his birthday, finished with 149 yards total on eight carries with five touchdowns.

He also received his sixth FBS offer in the last few days, this one from Michigan, and took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M.

The Great Barrington (Mass.) Police Department announced that it had closed its investigation into an alleged racial incident at Monument Mountain Regional High and released its findings, according to WWLP.

Police Chief William Walsh said “the remarks and language used during this incident are reprehensible” but said the police determined the speech did not  “constitute a prosecutable offense.” He said the remarks are “not condoned by the police department or the community of Great Barrington,” WWLP reported.

Walsh said a verbal altercation between two students on Sept. 26 began after a varsity football player took a knee during the national anthem before the Sept. 23 game.  Authorities say another student reportedly made hateful, threatening comments to the player that referenced lynching. The player reported the incident to school authorities.

“The altercation did not rise to a physical level, though the alleged words used were very concerning and prompted the police department to open an investigation,” Walsh said.

State and federal agencies were involved and the determination was made not to prosecute.
