Ohio State commit Tyjon Lindsey announces he'll undergo season-ending knee surgery

It has not been a particularly good month for five-star Ohio State-bound wide receivers.

First, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) wide receiver Trevon Grimes underwent season-ending knee surgery. Now, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) star Tyjon Lindsey has announced that his senior season, too, has come to an end.

“I got the news today (Thursday),” Lindsey told Steve Guiremand of MyLVSports.com. “If I played (the season) out I might hurt it even more and I might actually tear a ligament. I don’t want to risk anything right now so my decision is to try and get the surgery as soon as possible.”

Both Lindsey and Grimes expect to be fully recovered for next season in Columbus.

Lindsey returned to Bishop Gorman before the season after intending to play for Centennial (Corona, Calif.) in his native Southern California. He was not eligible to play early in the season while his transfer paperwork was processed, but he also broke a collarbone during a scrimmage that kept him sidelined.

Mill Creek (Ga.) QB Cameron Turley on perfect season, school records and baseball future

Cameron Turley set two Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) school records and equaled another in last week’s victory against Peachtree Ridge.

His 347 passing yards set the single-game record; his four passing touchdowns equaled the single-game record; and his 37 career passing touchdowns broke the school record of 35.

It’s been that kind of year for Turley and Mill Creek.

The Hawks are 8-0 and ranked No. 12 in the Super 25 heading into Friday night’s matchup with Mountain View (Lawrenceville), which is 7-1. Mill Creek won last year’s meeting 42-0, but this Mountain View team is having a breakthrough season and heading toward its first playoff berth.

Turley, 6-3 and 190 pounds, is in his second year as the full-time starter at quarterback. He threw for 2,200 yards and 16 touchdown last season and led the team to 13-1 record. The lone loss was to Colquitt County (Moultrie) in the state semifinals — a loss that Mill Creek avenged 34-27 in the season opener this season.

When this season ends, football likely will end for Turley, who is a Georgia Tech baseball commit.

USA TODAY High School Sports caught up with Turley this week to talk about the season so far, his success and balancing baseball and football.

Q: How would you describe how the season has gone so far?

A: This season has gone very well so far for our team obviously, but we always strive to get better. I feel like we’re just scratching our potential as a complete team and it will be very exciting once we put together all the key aspects of our team.

Q: Why do you think you’ve had so much success?

A: I think I’ve done well this year because I’m just having fun. I don’t have the pressure of recruiting lingering anymore so I can focus on my team of all things.

Q: Going back to the season opener, Colquitt County had a long winning streak and was two-time state champion. What was the significance of beating them and getting off to such a big start?

A: It meant a lot to our team to get the big win in the dome against a team like Colquitt. We were really excited to come into that game knowing their past success and had a chip on our shoulder from last year when they beat us in the semifinals. Overall, it was a great win for a program and definitely a confidence booster for the new season.

Q: Peachtree Ridge was a big game for you in terms of setting those school records. What do those marks mean to you?

A: The records are pretty cool to have now that I’ve broken them, but the only thing I’m really concerned about is winning games. If I do my job and help my team win games, regardless however many yards I put up in the game, I’m happy with the outcome.

Q: Your intention is to play baseball in college so how do you balance the demands of baseball and football, especially in the offseason for each sport?

A: In the offseason, especially now with baseball around the corner, I’ll stay after practice and hit at the high school field about three times a week. It’s sort of tough to balance them because they both take up so much time and energy, but you get used to a routine once you set one. Practicing football during baseball season is hard because baseball has games throughout the week so it’s hard to make time for football. I usually just throw a football occasionally throughout the baseball season, nothing too big.

In the history of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA selections, few players have been chosen more than once to either the first, second or third team.

But only one, according to USA TODAY research, was named Player of the Year in his or her sport twice.

That player is Candace Parker, who was the ALL-USA Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2002-03 and 2003-04 for Naperville (Ill.).

Parker added another chapter to her long list of basketball accolades on Thursday night when she won the WNBA Finals for the first time in her career and was named WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player. Parker led the Los Angeles Sparks with 28 points and 12 rebounds to a 77-76 victory in Game 5 against the Minnesota Lynx.

The championship — and Parker’s emotional response, dedicating the title to her former Tennessee coach Pat Summit — provides an opportunity to look back at just how dominant Parker was in high school in her two Player of the Year seasons.

Junior Year, 2002-03

She averaged 24.3 points, 14.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists and three assists, leading Naperville to the Class AA state title and was named Illinois’ Miss Basketball for the second time.

In her first three high school seasons, she posted a total of 2,175 points and 1,316 rebounds.

She discussed her future as part of a USA TODAY interview after being named Player of the Year:

Q: In 10 years I want to be where? Doing what?

A: “In graduate school either studying psychology or medicine. Of course, I’d be interested in the WNBA if I get the opportunity.”

Senior Year, 2003-04

She averaged 24.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 3.3 steals, leading Naperville to its second consecutive Class AA state title, despite missing 11 games with a torn knee ligament. She also was named Illinois Miss Basketball for the first time.

She finished with 2,758 career points, helping Naperville to a 95-4 record in her final 99 games.

Asked what car she drove at the time by USA TODAY, she said a 1990 Ford Topaz.

Q: What vanity plate would you choose?

A: PLJ. “Means peace, love and jump shot. I that’s how I sign autographs.”

When Scappoose High planned for a “Blackout” for its homecoming game against Astoria, this is probably not what it hand in mind.

Late in the first quarter with no score, the power went out.

As reported by The Oregonian, “a power outage, believed to be caused by a car accident in Scappoose, knocked out the field lights, scoreboard and any other source of light other than emergency vehicles and cell phones.”

After attempting to move the game to another location Friday night to finish, the game was suspended and will be played Saturday.

No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) raced to a 42-0 lead and finished with a 71-0 victory against Desert Oasis on Friday night to extend its winning streak to 48 games.

The seven-time Nevada state champions have not lost to a Nevada team since 2008 and that run could continue this season. Gorman is 4-0 against in-state competition with regular season games against Durango and Sierra Vista remaining before the playoffs.

Gorman posted its second consecutive lopsided shutout and has allowed only seven points in the last 11 quarters.

The Gaels improved to 9-0 on the season.

Gorman was without Ohio State wide receiver commit Tyjon Lindsey, who announced Thursday that he would undergo knee surgery.

No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 10 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) put on the matchup you would expect between Top 10 teams on Friday night.

While it lacked the high-scoring offensive fireworks that have been typical of Mater Dei games, the Monarchs earned a hard-fought 26-21 victory to remain unbeaten.

The victory broke Mater Dei’s six-game losing streak to St. John Bosco, its Trinity League rival.

Mater Dei (8-0) scored the game’s final points with 7:01 remaining on Shakobe Harper’s 1-yard run and the extra point. It was the first time the Monarchs led since 3-0.

Mater Dei had taken possession at the Bosco 43 as Jalen Cole picked off a pass.

After the teams traded punts, Bosco (6-2) took over at its own 8-yard line with 3:37 left after another fabulous punt by Mater Dei’s Ryan Stonehouse. The Braves got the ball to the Mater Dei 41 with just more than a minute left but a pair of incomplete passes urned the ball over on downs.

Mater Dei took over with 55 seconds left and was able to run out the clock for the win.

Mater Dei had cut the lead to 21-19 with 8:47 left in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard TD pass from Daniels to Osiris St. Brown, with St. Brown diving into the end zone for the score. It was Mater Dei’s first offensive touchdown of the night.

Bosco had extended its lead with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter on a 5-yard TD run from Demetrious Flowers. With the extra point, Bosco led 21-12.

Mater Dei had cut the lead to 14-12 on a 75-yard punt return from Amon-Ra St. Brown, but the two-point pass was incomplete.

The Braves had a 14-6 lead at halftime. Flowers scored on a 10-yard run and the PAT was good with 3:31 remaining in the second quarter.

Mater Dei’s Chase McGrath hit a pair of field goals in the first quarter while Bosco got a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Re-al Mitchell for a 7-6 lead.

Mater Dei was called for nine penalties and nearly 100 yards in the first half and had a touchdown called back.

Bosco’s two losses have come to teams now ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the Super 25. No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) earned a 35-20 win against the Braves on Sept. 9.

Corsicana (Texas) ties national record with fifth overtime game of season

Corsicana (Texas) apparently doesn’t mind doing a little extra when it comes to getting wins.

The Tigers set a Texas record and equaled the national record with their fifth overtime game of the season Friday night — and more amazingly — they have won them all. That includes Friday’s 21-20 overtime victory against Lindale.

Corsicana is 5-3 on the season — 5-0 in overtime games and 0-3 in games that end in regulation.

“I’ll play overtime all the time if we can win, but I would really like to win a game in regulation,” coach Steve Hoffman told the Corsicana Daily Sun. “It’s fun to win overtime, and it feels great to be 3-0 (in the district). It’s like five overtimes, believe it or not, it happened.

“But it’s making me old. I used to have red hair. Now its grey.”

According to the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations record book, three other teams have played five overtime games in a season: Rogersville Lauderdale County (Ala.) in 1986, Tremont (Ill.) in 1984 and Lake Linden-Hubbell (Mich.) in 1976.

Villa Park (Calif.) had a 6-foot-7 mascot sporting the Spartan head during Friday night’s football game — quite possibly the nation’s tallest mascot.

The Spartan is usually much shorter, but four-star basketball recruit Evan Battey donned the headgear.

Battey, a power forward who committed to Colorado last month, seemed to enjoy his time as the mascot (see the video below). Villa Park beat Canyon 25-14.

“I don’t usually put on the mascot head, but I like to dance in front of the crowd at football and volleyball games to get us hyped,” Battey told USA TODAY High School Sports. “But some guy had it and was like, ‘Do you want to put it on?’ and I said, ‘Sure!’ ”

Battey is ranked among the top 30 power forwards in the nation.

A high school football official in North Carolina is believed to be the first official to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem.

The official, who has not been identified, kneeled before the Southwest vs. Croatan High School game, according to the Jacksonville Daily News. It is unclear whether the official has taken a knee before previous games.

“I just think it’s not right to do that at a high school football game, especially for a official paid by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association,” N.C. General Assembly Representative Phil Shepard told the JDN on Saturday.

“Whether you agree with whats going on or not, he’s officiating a local ball game where young men and women are watching. Military men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country and I believe it’s disrespectful to the country, everybody in the country and what it stands for.”

A spokeswoman for the school district and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association did not respond to the JDN for comment.

The move sparked social media conversation with many criticizing the official.
