Hawaii Baseball POY: Alex Oley

The Gatorade State Baseball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Alex Oley

THE BASICS

School: Mid-Pacific Institute (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Grade: Senior
Position: Outfielder and left-handed pitcher
Height: 5-foot-9
Weight: 160 pounds

Athletic achievement: He batted .406 with 16 runs scored and a .638 slugging percentage, leading the Owls (18-5) to the Division I quarterfinals this past season. The 2016 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year, Oley also posted a 5-1 record on the mound with a 2.35 ERA.

Academic excellence: Oley has maintained a 3.49 GPA.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and as a youth baseball coach.

THE PRAISE

“Alex Oley exemplifies everything we hope youth players to be,” said Keenan Sue, head coach at the Punahou School. “He is hard working and has a positive attitude but is a fierce competitor who rises to a challenge. He is genuinely confident, yet humble and just a plain, good player.”

THE FUTURE: Oley has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at New Mexico State University this fall.
