No. 8 DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) has already suffered a major injury even before it opens the season Friday at Oscar C. Smith (Chesapeake, Va.).

Running back Anthony McFarland suffered a broken fibula in a scrimmage last week and is expected to have surgery, coach Elijah Brooks told The Washington Post. When he could return remains unknown.

McFarland is ranked as the No. 3 all-purpose back in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings and had 29 reported offers.

He posted more than 900 total yards last season as DeMatha won its third consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. He had 1,124 yards rushing as a sophomore.

Brooks told The Post that McFarland was expected to be the team’s featured back this season and also work out of the slot as well as play defense.
