Following in the footsteps of 2016 first-round pick Thon Maker, star high school wing Hamidou Diallo says he is eligible for the NBA Draft in June and is giving it some consideration.
Like Maker — drafted No. 16 overall by the Milwaukee Bucks — Diallo will be a year removed from high school by the time the draft rolls around. Diallo told Scout.com on Thursday that he graduated from Putnam Science (Conn.) last spring and is doing a post-grad year at Putnam.
“It’s definitely something that I’m going to look into,” Diallo told Scout.com when asked about the draft. “It’s my ultimate goal and I don’t feel like it would hurt me looking into. But as of now I want to go to college.”
He later tweeted that he’s sticking with going to college.
A Queens native, the 6-5 Diallo is ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard and No. 10 player overall in the Class of 2017 by Scout.com. He is coming off a dominating summer with the NY Rens on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaging 19.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
Scout.com reported that since college coaches were allowed to attend open gym Sept. 8, Diallo has met with Arizona’s Sean Miller, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Indiana’s Tom Crean, Kansas’ Bill Self, Connecticut’s Kevin Ollie and UNLV’s Marvin Menzies.
