No. 13 Lake Travis (Austin) closed a successful four days of state championship games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington with a dominating 41-13 victory against The Woodlands on Saturday night.
Lake Travis jumped to a 27-0 lead and rolled to its first 6A Division I title and sixth state title in school history. The previous five — from 2007 to 2011 — were in 4A.
The Cavaliers lost in the 6A Division II title game last year to Katy and opened this season with a 35-28 loss to Judson. Lake Travis won the next week against eventual state finalist Steele (Cibolo) 59-56 in overtime and rolled from there.
No team scored more than 21 points in Lake Travis’ last 14 victories and the closest any team got was 14.
“They worked their tails off,” coach Hank Carter said. “They sacrificed a lot to play football. Even practices are tough. It’s not like the other sports. The things they give up to come and do this. It makes it all worth it. What a feather in their cap as they go out.”
SMU quarterback commit Charlie Brewer was dominant on both the ground and in the air. He was efficient as a passer, dynamic as a runner, and even pulled down a one-handed grab.
Brewer was 27 of 37 for 361 yards with four touchdowns and an interception (only his third of the season). He finished the season 263 of 340 for a completion percentage of 77.35. That breaks the National Federation of State High School Associations record held by Dano Graves of Folsom (Calif.), who completed 75.2 percent in 2009.
“I grew up watching my brother have all that success,” Brewer said. “I wanted that. I finally joined the state championship club tonight. We got a really special group. Really just a brotherhood. We stuck together this season.”
Arkansas commit Maleek Barkley had six catches for 138 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown.
The Woodlands ended its season at 15-1 but regardless of the result, the support shown by the Texas High School football community at large in the wake of Grant Milton’s injury has been heartwarming.
