Stuff like this just doesn’t happen to Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and legendary coach Gary McKnight.
No. 1 Chino Hills (Calif.) thumped the No. 22 Monarchs 102-54 in what The Los Angeles Times described as “perhaps the worst defeat inflicted on a McKnight-coached team in 34 seasons.”
It was the 16th time the Huskies have reached at least 100 points this season, two away from the state record. Chino Hills advances to the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals next Saturday against No. 6 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth). Sierra Canyon downed No. 11 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance), 78-69.
Chino was up 12-0, 33-6 after the first quarter and ahead 89-40 after three quarters. The lopsided margin led to the running clock.
As always, the UCLA Ball Brothers were stars of the show for 30-0 Chino.
