Miami gets another key recruit in No. 3 tight end Brevin Jordan

A day after attending Michigan’s spring game, tight end Brevin Jordan has committed to Miami. He made the announcement Sunday on Twitter.

Jordan, from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) is ranked as the No. 3 tight end in the Class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite.

His commitment continues a strong spring for coach Mark Richt and Miami, which is ranked as having the No. 1 recruiting class thus far. Jordan is the first of 16 commitment in the class who is not a Florida native or attending a high school in the state.

Jordan’s mother tweeted after her son’s commitment, “Just feels right!!!!! So proud of you baby boy!!!!!” And he responded:

Jordan chose Miami over Michiga and UCLA. He visited Michigan with teammate Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the nation’s top uncommitted QB. The players posed for photos with coach Jim Harbaugh and were sitting in a prominent spot for the game.

Jordan has said that he wanted to go to a school with an ability to get tight ends to the NFL. Miami’s David Njoku could be a first-round pick this year.

Jordan initially tweeted that he would be releasing his top schools, before seemingly shifted to make the decision.

“Miami was just a home thing,” Jordan told Scout.com. “Me and my mom both felt it. It’s just home. It’s a smaller school and just a beautiful area.

“My mom, to be honest, was for UCLA. She wanted me to go to UCLA so bad. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to do what’s best for me. I want to play in the NFL and Miami will get me there. I know they will if I play hard.”

Jordan had nine receiving TDs last season as Gorman won its third consecutive Super 25 titles.

Report: Elite recruit Kevin Knox turned down offer to play in China

Tampa Catholic (Fla.) small forward Kevin Knox is ranked as the No. 7 player in the ESPN 100 for the Class of 2017 and remains uncommitted as the signing period began last Wednesday.

At the McDonald’s All America Game in Chicago, Knox initially pegged this week as the time he’ll decide among North Carolina, Duke, Florida State, Missouri and Kentucky because that’s Tampa Catholic’s spring break.

That is not set in stone, and a story in the Tampa Bay Times indicated a decision won’t come until at least next week after being on the road extensively for McDonald’s, the Nike Hoop Summit and the Jordan Brand Classic.

Since the McDonald’s game, Knox has added Missouri to the mix and took a visit there last weekend with No. 1 overall player Michael Porter Jr. and four-star guard Blake Harris.

Knox’s goal has been to be a one-and-done, but that one will come at college.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Knox and his family have turned down an offer to play in China for $1.4 million for next season before he becomes eligible for the NBA Draft.

The family has taken out a $1 million insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London to safeguard against potential injury in college.

“I didn’t put much stock into the offer,” Kevin Knox Sr. told The Times. “We politely said thanks but no thanks. He’s going to college.”

Which college that will be is the question.

From high school ALL-USA to NFL Draft: Leonard Fournette, LSU

As the NFL draft nears, USA TODAY High School Sports will look back at the high school careers and draft prospects for former American Family Insurance ALL-USA selections. Today’s installment features LSU running back Leonard Fournette.

PLAYER PROFILE:

Position: Running back

High school: St. Augustine (New Orleans)

ALL-USA history: Named ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 and to the ALL-USA First Team in 2012 as a junior.

College: LSU

Height, weight: 6-1, 228 pounds

Leonard Fournette, the ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 at St. Augustine High in New Orleans (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)

By the numbers: Fournette ran for 1,953 yards in 2015 with 22 rushing touchdowns after 1,034 yards and 10 rushing TDs as a freshman. Last season, he missed five games with injuries but still managed 843 yards and eight TDs on 129 carries. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry as a sophomore and junior. As a freshman, he also returned 24 kicks for a 26 yards per return average before he stopped playing special teams, given his enhanced role on offense.

Draft projection: Round 1

Draft positives: An absolute bulldozer when running downhill. Rare combination of power and speed. Can knock any defender in to tomorrow when he has a full head of steam. Pushes the pile, consistently falls forward. Functionally strong and powerful. Excellent pad level. Will surprise with speed in the open field, can get away from defensive backs in pursuit downfield. Can break off the long runs when space is there.

Draft negatives: Comes in to the league with some damaged tires. Has taken a lot of hits to his lower body. Missed five games due to nagging injuries in 2016. Often found limping off the field. Lacks wiggle and takes too long to turn his hips and alter his direction. Slow to react to clogged running lanes. Needs better patience.

What he says, on losing 12 pounds between Scouting Combine and Pro Day: “I didn’t really do anything different. My mom has been on me a little bit about what I’m eating, I just wanted to show everyone that I could lose the weight. But it really doesn’t matter. I’m a player, I’m good at any weight I want to. Some people had concerns about me at 240. They said at the next level it was different so I might be playing closer to 250. So I just wanted to show I could stay on course and be disciplined and get my business in order.”

Tate Martell got his first taste of action at Ohio State during Saturday’s spring game, and he scored the first time he touched the ball.

Martell, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), is an early enrollee with the Buckeyes. He also was the only quarterback not wearing a black non-contact jersey.

Martell entered Ohio State as the No. 2 dual threat quarterback in the Class of 2017, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Caylin Newton, Cam's brother, shows off fashion sense at prom

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is noted for his unique fashion sense that was on display again this weekend at Coachella.

Younger brother Caylin has his own sense of style too.

As posted on Twitter by his date, Caylin donned a patterned gold jacket, pink shit and reddish bowtie for the prom.

Caylin is an early enrollee at Howard University after graduating from Grady High in Atlanta. He threw for 3,322 yards and 33 touchdowns and ran for 1,036 yards and another 13 touchdowns as a senior.

He is expected to compete for the quarterback job, but the coaches have not ruled out the possibility of playing another position, especially since Howard has two veteran quarterbacks on the roster.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) linebacker takes five-day unofficial visit to Michigan

Anthony Solomon, a highly-touted linebacker in the Class of 2019, wanted to learn more about Michigan after visiting in February.

With St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) heading toward Easter break, Solomon arranged for a unique unofficial visit – one that lasted five days.

“It was my idea,” Solomon said. “I wanted to see how they practice and perform on game day, and I wanted to explore Ann Arbor and get a feel for the environment.”

Solomon’s visit led into Saturday’s spring game, which was attended by more than 57,000 people at Michigan Stadium. Solomon was among a star-studded lineup of recruits in Ann Arbor.

RELATED: Nebraska, Ohio State have big football recruiting weekends

“A lot of fans showed up for the spring game,” Solomon said. “It felt like a real game.”

A lengthy unofficial visit is uncommon, but not unprecedented, Rivals.com national recruiting director Mike Farrell said. He said it happens “probably a couple of times each spring or summer every year to different schools.”

Because this was an unofficial visit, Solomon said his family paid for his time in Ann Arbor.

“The greatest value was that Anthony got an opportunity to really immerse himself with the team to get the day-to-day feel,” Solomon’s mom, Kaleith said. “As parents, my husband and I like to know that we provided Anthony with the tools to make a solid decision for his future.

“With that, we are thankful that The University of Michigan staff are innovative enough to grant him this level of access. That made him feel right at home on an unofficial visit.”

Solomon, who plays for his uncle Roger Harriott at Aquinas, has an impressive list of reported offers, including Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Auburn, Michigan State and Tennessee among others.

He has previously indicated that Michigan was his top choice at this early point in the process, leading to the extended visit. Solomon also visited Junior Day at Clemson in early March, despite being a sophomore.

He also got to spend time with a number of south Florida players on the Michigan roster, and posted a Snapchat image with Jabril Peppers.

“I have a healthy relationship with the coaches and they seemed to be impressed with me,” he said. “I went to the practices (during the week) and hung out at the practice facility.”

Solomon does not currently have other visits planned and said he does not expect to attend camps this summer, but expect him to continue to look closely at his options.

Destiny Littleton, nation's leading scorer, takes official visit to Texas

McDonald’s All American guard Destiny Littleton, the nation’s leading scorer in girls basketball, is taking an official visit to the University of Texas, she told USA TODAY High School Sports on Monday.

Littleton, ranked as the No. 33 player in the espnW HoopGurlz rankings and the all-time leading scorer in California, received her release from USC after coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke resigned last month.

“Texas is the only place I’ve been to,” Littleton said. “I’ve been talking to a lot of others, though.” Littleton said she has not scheduled her final visit.

USC has not hired a replacement for Cooper-Dyke, although Littleton has said she will still consider the Trojans. She also has interest in a number of other Pac-12 programs such as Oregon, Arizona State, Washington and Oregon.

GIRLS SPORTS MONTH: Destiny Littleton, basketball has ‘transformed my life’

Littleton, who averaged 48.1 points per game for The Bishop’s School (La Jolla, Calif.), said she was not expecting to have to reopen her recruitment, but now will deal with the circumstances.

“I’m going to choose a school based on what fits my playing style, where can I go to make an impact, who is going to win, that kind of stuff,” Littleton said. “The relationships are going to be there. I’m not going to choose a school when I don’t know the coaches.”

How to use social media — and the perils of its use — is always among key topics in recruiting. Most coaches monitor social media or have someone who does and use what they see to make judgments about potential prospects.

While programs will eliminate recruits for for social media ills, rarely do they come out and publicly note that.

Without using a name, Iowa State cornerbacks coach DK McDonald tweeted that the school “rejected a recruit” because of a tweet.

From high school ALL-USA to NFL Draft: Dalvin Cook, Florida State

As the NFL draft nears, USA TODAY High School Sports will look back at the high school careers and draft prospects for former American Family Insurance ALL-USA selections. Today’s installment features Florida State running back Dalvin Cook.

PLAYER PROFILE:

Position: Running back

High school: Miami Central

ALL-USA history: Named ALL-USA First Team in 2013 as a senior.

College: Florida State

Height, weight: 5-11, 213 pounds

By the numbers:  Ran for at least 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons at Florida State, including a career-high 1,765 as a junior last fall. Finished his college career with 4,464 yards to become the school’s career leading rusher and 46 rushing touchdowns.

Draft projection: Round 1

Draft positives: Do-it-all, every down back that can wear every hat possible from the backfield. Elite-level foot speed and quickness. Balance and body control as he changes direction is always there. Gains a ton of yards after contact. Shows burst to and out of the action to break off big runs. Creates something out of the smallest of creases. Physical, aggressive, hard runner that will not hesitate to lower his shoulder and create heavy contact.

Draft negatives: Needs to continue to add bulk to his frame if he is going to take a full slate of NFL hits every week. Needs to add strength to his lower body and learn to use his legs to push the pile more. Did not have a lot of blocking responsibilities.

What he says, on draft preparation: “I’m just working hard so my name can be called pretty early. I got to put the work in right now, and just give everyone a good impression of Dalvin.”

Ken Higbee, who led Pahranagat Valley (Nev.) to a national eight-man football record 104 consecutive victories, has been charged with 225 counts in a criminal complaint that includes forgery, misconduct and one count of theft, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday.

Higbee was charged with 76 felony counts and 149 gross misdemeanor counts and is accused of moving sports equipment from C.O. Bastian High School in Caliente – the school where he is the principal – to the Pahranagat Valley football program.“At the end of the day, he never put a dollar in his pocket,” Higbee’s attorney, Bret Whipple, told the Review-Journal. “They’re really making a mountain out of a molehill here. It’s truly outrageous.”

“He should probably not have transferred some of the equipment from one school to the other …  Everything that he did was not for him personally, but for the community.”

Pahranagat Valley principal Mike Strong said Higbee remains the school’s football coach. He has been on administrative leave. He said the school is not expected to take immediate action.

After waiving his initial appearance, Higbee will face a yet to be scheduled preliminary hearing.

Higbee’s team won nine consecutive state titles before losing the Class 1A state title game to Spring Mountain in November, snapping the long winning streak.

Five UCLA signees and three players headed to Kentucky are scheduled to take part in the annual BallIsLife All-American Game on May 6 in Long Beach, Calif.

The game is annually among the most fun all-star events and brings in players from around the country along with many of Southern California’s best.

The UCLA contingent includes Jaylen Hands, Kris Wilkes, LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill. Kentucky is scheduled to be represented by PJ Washington, Quade Green and Jared Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt could be unlikely after suffering an ankle injury in the Jordan Brand Classic last week. Green did not play in that game following a concussion.

Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.) is the only high school with two players expected in Arizona signee Brandolph Randolph and uncommitted Top 3 overall player Mo Bamba.

Hunter Greene, considered the potential No. 1 overall pick in June’s Major League Baseball Draft, could be done pitching for the season at Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), The Los Angeles Times reported.

Coach Tom Dill has promised to protect Greene’s arm and will make the decision on Greene’s availability. He is not scheduled to pitch in this week’s Boras Classic.

Greene, an American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Baseball selection, was 3-0 with a .075 ERA in five appearances and 43 strikeouts in 28 innings.

The Times notes that Notre Dame has found added pitching depth, making it less of a necessity for Greene to take the mound. He is the team’s shortstop when not pitching and among their best hitters.

Greene drove in three runs Tuesday in a 6-0 victory against Aliso Niguel in the opening round of the Boras Classic. He is hitting .308 with five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI thus far.

A UCLA commit should he not turn pro after the draft, Greene hit .419 with 20 runs, 20 RBI and five homers last season and also had a 1.63 ERA and 5-3 record in 55.2 innings.
