Nation's No. 1 recruit, Rashan Gary, to make final visit to Clemson, reports say

Defensive tackle Rashan Gary, the nation’s unanimous No. 1 recruit, will take his final visit to Clemson, according to reports.

Gary was trying to determine whether to visit Alabama or Clemson in the days before next Wednesday’s National Signing Day. Gary has been to both schools unofficially, but Clemson got the nod in part because a number of coaches were not on campus when he visited last spring during Easter.

Gary will announce his decision Wednesday during SportsCenter at 1 p.m. ET, one of 13 players expected to commit on the networks. However, he is expected to be in Bristol for the announcement rather than making his choice public at his school, Paramus Catholic in New Jersey.

His official visits have been to Michigan, Ole Miss, Auburn and Southern Cal, although he has visited a number of other schools unofficially. Before he heads to Clemson, he will stop in Atlanta for the Bobby Dodd Foundation event to receive its national high school lineman of the year honor. Georgia early enrollee quarterback Jacob Eason (Lake Stevens, Wash.) will receive the national high school back of the year honor.

Tim “Ice” Harris is returning to Booker T. Washington (Miami) as head coach for the third time, according to The Miami Herald.

Harris spent the last two years as running backs coach at the University of Miami but was not retained by new coach Mark Richt. It was his second stint with the Hurricanes. He also spent three years on Randy Shannon’s staff.

Harris had a record of 99-10 in eight seasons at Booker T. from 2003-07 and then 2011-13 and was named the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Coach of the Year after winning a state title in 2007. His teams won three state titles in all, including back-to-back 4A crowns in 2012 and ’13.

There’s a new No. 1 in the USA TODAY High School Sports/National High School Coaches Association Super 25 wrestling rankings.

Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) returns to the top spot after defeating former No. 1 Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, Pa.) 35-20 on Sunday in a dual meet that was postponed a day by the blizzard.

RELATED: Super 25 Wrestling Rankings

Blair was ranked No. 1 in the Preseason Super 25, but dropped to No. 2 after Seminary won the season-opening Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament.  Wyoming Seminary has held the No. 1 ranking for the last six weeks.

The two will get another shot at each other in the season-ending National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University at the end of February.

This Sunday, SEM will have a chance to rebound from the Blair loss when it hosts No. 5 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) in a dual meet.

Malvern Prep (Malvern, Pa.) returns to the rankings. Malvern’s only dual meet loss has been to Wyoming Seminary.  All of the other Super 25 teams held their spots this week.

Aside from the SEM/Bergen match, Thursday’s California showdown between No. 6 Buchanan (Clovis) and No. 9 Clovis will shape next week’s rankings.

A 17-year-old high school basketball player in California was arrested and charged with felony battery after going into the stands and striking a fan, police said.

According to CBSLA.com, the player for Golden Valley High School went into an area of the crowd at West Ranch High School (Santa Clarita) where fans were yelling taunts during the game. The player who, according to the report, previously attended West Ranch was booed during introductions.

The 17-year-old spectator received cuts to his face but was not taken to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Two girls who were caught in the brawl were not seriously injured.

Two deputies assigned to security attempted to gain control of the situation and additional police were called.

The sheriff’s department said the player was released to his parents after the incident. Administrators are both schools say they are investigating what sparked the brawl.

T.J. Leaf is always looking to add to his collection of moves on the court.

“Any good move I see, no matter who it is, I try to implement in my game,” he said.

Leaf’s game is plenty good and getting better. And it will be on display at the McDonald’s All American Game on March 30 in Chicago.

The 6-9 Leaf, a UCLA signee, received his honorary jersey this week during a ceremony at his school, Foothills Christian in El Cajon, Calif., as part of the McDonald’s All American Game Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance.

“I was thrilled,” Leaf said of his selection. “You grow up wanting an honor like this. It’s a huge blessing. Once I heard my name, it was a huge relief and knowing that my hard work has started to pay off.”

Leaf is ranked as the No. 9 player in the class by ESPN.com and will get to share the experience with one of his future teammates in Lonzo Ball from Chino Hills, Calif.

“I don’t think there’s one thing I’m looking forward to — the whole experience is going to be awesome,” he said. “With the game and all the stuff we’re doing, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Rayshad Lewis, son of Ray Lewis, commits to Utah State

Rayshad Lewis, the son of former All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis, has committed to Utah State days after he took an official visit.

Lewis is a cornerback for Bishop Moore (Orlando), but his recruitment was relatively slow in part because he stands 5-9 and 165 pounds. He also played offense.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, Lewis had seven other Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers — Appalachian State, Ball State, Florida Atlantic, Idaho, Old Dominion, Toledo and UMass. Utah was the first school to offer him last spring.

“It went great. I was surprised that the area was that beautiful and the facilities were that nice because you would never think that something in a small town like Logan, Utah, would be that impressive,” Lewis told The Orlando Sentinel of his visit to Logan, Utah. “The facilities were great and the fans really love the Aggies.”

Lewis had been interested in Central Florida, but the Knights did not make an offer because they were full at his position.

Top 10 player Derrick Brown tweets lyrics to Rocky Top after Tennessee visit

$
0
0

Derrick Brown, one of the top defensive tackles in the Class of 2016, has kept relatively quiet about his recruiting.

Named the American Family Insurance Defensive Player of the Year at the Army Bowl, Brown from Lanier (Buford, Ga.) has been steadfast with his five schools: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State and Tennessee.

Most consider it a three-school race among Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee with the home-state school possibly having the edge. Both his parents attended Mississippi State, but that has not swayed him.

Last week, Georgia coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker visited Brown via helicopter.

The Vols received his final official visit over the weekend and while he didn’t say anything about the visit, it seems like he had a good time. After all, he tweeted a number of photos and included the lyrics to Rocky Top.

And if you think he’s not counting the minutes, until he makes his announcement, well …

Brown is scheduled to make his announcement on ESPN2 during the 3 p.m. ET hour on National Signing Day.

DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) will open the season against Oscar Smith (Chesepeake, Va.) on Aug. 27, according to report from  NationalHSFootball.com.

DeMatha won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship, finished 11-1 and was ranked No. 12 in the final Super 25 rankings. Oscar Smith has been a perennial Virginia power and was 13-1 last season with the one loss coming to Westfield in the state 6A title game.

Both teams returns their quarterbacks: Beau English for DeMatha and four-year starter Shon Mitchell for Oscar Smith.

DeMatha will have a busy National Signing Day this week as it loses nearly a half-dozen four-star recruits such as Penn State-bound defensive end Shane Simmons and a trio headed for Maryland — offensive guard Terrance Davis, wide receiver/athlete D.J. Turner and wide receiver Tino Ellis.
