Lauren Rain Williams put herself among the elite names in high school track and field Saturday.

The junior at Westlake Oaks Christian School won the California Southern Section Division 4 championship in the 200 meters in a wind-aided 22.44 seconds, which is No. 3 all-time nationally for a high school girl in all conditions.

The time ranks behind only Allyson Felix’s 22.11 and Candace Hill’s 22.43. Both of those were wind legal. The wind gauge was 2.5 meters per second during Williams’ race.

Of note, Williams is the fastest in the United States. Felix and Hill ran their times in international competition.

Williams was selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Girls Track and Field team.

“I knew it would be wind-aided, but that is OK,” Williams told the Ventura County Star. “I know I have it in me to do that now and I will do it legal in the future.”

She also won the 100 meters in 11.17 seconds, No. 4 all-time in California under all conditions. The gauge was 3.5 for the 100. Only Angela Williams, Marion Jones and Felix have run faster.

The Los Angeles Times has video highlights of the meet, including Williams.

The recruiting world took notice when eighth-grade linebacker Jesus Machado received an offer from Alabama, his fifth Football Bowl Subdivision offer.

He wasn’t the only eighth-grader to pick up a scholarship offer in the last few days. Running back Don Chaney Jr. from Belen Jesuit Prep in Miami received an offer from Syracuse, according to Scout.com.

Chaney played on the varsity football team last season at Belen.

The offers are non-binding because rules prohibit formal offers from being extended until a player’s junior year.

A high school runner in Alaska died a day after collapsing at the end of a 3,200 meter race in the Region VI meet.

Joseph Balko, a freshman for Monroe Catholic (Fairbacks) died at Providence Hospital in Anchorage, according to reports.

A cause of death has not been determined.

He crossed the finish line in 13:10.84 to finish ninth among the 11 runners in the Class 3A race. Shortly thereafter, he collapsed and was treated by those at the track before paramedics arrived, who continued CPR and used a defibrillator.

“When you first think of Joseph, you think of his faith. You think of the kindness with which he treated everyone around him,” Frank Ostanik, Monroe Catholic athletic director and boys basketball head coach, told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. “He was just an incredibly kind and nice young man. “You never heard him say anything negative. He was always looking out for other people.”

According to the News-Miner, meet officials suspended the meet after the incident and resumed the next morning. The meet had concluded by the time word came of his death. His teammates were told in the stands before a moment of silence.

The boy scout troop that Balko was a member of released a statement on Facebook on Sunday morning. Here is the statement from the Midnight Sun Council:

It is with heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Joseph Balko, 15, of Troop 38. After running a race at a track meet on Friday, he collapsed and was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. After being stabilized, he was sent to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Saturday, he passed away.

Joseph was an avid Scout and Order of the Arrow member. He started his Scouting career in December of 2007 and earned his Tiger badge in February of 2008. In July of 2014, and at the age of 13, he achieved the rank of Eagle. He earned a Bronze palm in February of 2015. Joseph’s family is very involved in Scouting.

Please keep the Balko family in your prayers as they work through this difficult time. Arrangements have not been set yet.

Friends and supporters took to social media to extend their prayers and condolences to the family.

Super 25 No. 1 Eagle (Idaho) completes perfect softball season

Eagle (Idaho), ranked No. 1 in Super 25 softball, completed a perfect season by winning the 5A state title over the weekend in grand style.

Pitchers Bradie Fillmore and Autumn Moffat combined for a no-hitter in a 5-2 victory against Rocky Mountain in the state championship game.

The title game came hours after Eagle completed its semifinal victory in extra innings in a game suspended the day before by rain. That was a pitcher’s duel between Fillmore and Coeur d’Alene ace and UNLV signee Bre Burke.

MORE: Full Super 25 softball rankings

According to the Idaho Statesman, the teams were scoreless after seven innings, but Moffat had an RBI single to break the deadlock in the top of the eighth and Fillmore worked out of trouble in the bottom of the inning to seal a spot in the title game. Coeur d’Alene had two on with two outs before Fillmore made a diving catch of a popup and got two ground ball outs.

“Phenomenal,” Eagle coach Nicole Rollins told the Idaho Statesman. “I knew these girls could do it all along. Top to bottom, their confidence is unreal.”

In the title game, Cal-bound Fillmore (13-0 on the season) was perfect through three before Rocky Mountain scored in the fifth on two walks and an error. Moffat threw two scoreless innings to secure Eagle’s second consecutive state title and a 29-0 season.

The Super 25 softball rankings are provided by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. There are three more rankings, which are released each Thursday during the season, with the Super 25 champion being determined by the June 9 rankings.

Four quarterbacks emerged from the Nike Opening Regional on Sunday with Elite 11 invitations, the most thus far from a single site.

The quarterback MVP at the event was Jack Sears from San Clemente, Calif., the top uncommitted pro style quarterback in the Class of 2017.

Sears visited Cal over the weekend and will visit Washington on Monday, he told our partners at Scout.com. He also has been to USC and UCLA and has a summer trip planned for Texas A&M.

Also receiving invitiations:

  • Lefty Tua Tagovailoa from St. Louis in Honolulu, who recently committed to Alabama.
  • Dylan McCaffery from Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), a Michigan commit who many consider to be the top pro style QB in this class. McCaffery is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ed and brother of Stanford Heisman Trophy finalist Christian.
  • Jake Heaner from Monte Vists (Danville, Calif.) is uncommitted and one of the top passers in Northern California.

The next round is June 3-5 in the Los Angeles area.

Just two weeks after five-star quarterback Tate Martell decommitted from Texas A&M, the Aggies received a pledge Friday from Pearland (Texas) quarterback Connor Blumrick.

“Their facilities are awesome. Coach (Noel) Mazzone (Texas A&M Offensive Coordinator) seems like a great guy to be around. Their whole staff seems like a great staff to be around. It’s a good place to be.

“I would like to stay in Texas so my family can see me play,” Blumrick told Scout.com. “I’ve always dreamed about playing quarterback for one of the big programs in Texas.”

Blumrick, a three-star prospect according to Scout, landed an offer just three days prior to his commitment.

At 6-foot-6, 203 pounds, Blumrick has the size to be a solid college quarterback. He chose the Aggies over Ole Miss, Memphis, and others. Below are his highlights from his junior year at Pearland.

USA TODAY Sports has assembled its first composite rankings for football recruits in the Class of 2017. The chart below will be updated frequently between now and National Signing Day next February.

RELATED: 2017 Composite Team Football Recruiting Rankings

The composite represents the average rankings of the four major recruiting services – 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout. The lower the average the better. For players who are not ranked by a particular service, the player receives a maximum number based on the way players are ranked for each site (247 for 247, 300 for ESPN, 250 for Rivals and 300 for Scout).

Antioch (Calif.) running back Najee Harris leads the initial composite fueled by the No. 1 overall ranking by 247 and Scout. Harris is an Alabama commit.

Texas defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, Rivals’ top-ranked player, comes in at No. 3 in the composite. ESPN’s top-ranked player, Tennessee offensive tackle Trey Smith, is at No. 47 because he is not listed in the Rivals 250.

In a strong year for offensive tackles, four are ranked in the top 12 spots.

This probably doesn’t happen all that often, at least at the same time.

Michael Porter Jr., ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPN 60, cut Duke, Kentucky and Kansas at one time when he announced his top five on his Instagram account Monday night.

The five that made the cut: Oklahoma, Missouri, Virginia, Indiana and Washington.

Many expect Porter to land at Washington, where his father recently took a job as an assistant coach. Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar is his godfather and his younger brother, Jontay, is a Huskies commit.

Porter told USA TODAY High School Sports after his father took the job that it wasn’t a “lock” that he would follow him to Washington.

“I’m definitely still looking at some schools very seriously and my dad told me he wants me to do what’s best for me,” Porter wrote in his monthly blog.

Porter led Father Tolton (Columbia, Mo.) but will be attending high school in the Seattle area with his father’s move. He has not determined which school that will be at this point.

ALL-USA second-teamer Daton Fix from Charles Page High (Sand Springs, Okla.) swept Austin Gomez with a pair of 10-0 technical falls to return to the World Junior Team. Fix was a bronze medalist at the 2015 WXX Cadet World Championships. In his prep career, Fix is 121-0.

White Idaho football players charged with raping black disabled teammate

Three Dietrich (Id.) High football players have been charged with the sexual assault of a disabled teammate stemming from an event last fall in the school locker room.

The three teens, all white, allegedly sexually assaulted a black disabled student with a coat hanger last October, according to authorities. The details of the event are grisly, involving a coat hangar being inserted into the victim’s rectum, but there are also claims that the assault was a culmination of months of racist abuse.

According to the victim’s testimony last month, one of the alleged attackers asked him for a hug, which was apparently a signal for the attack to begin.

“I screamed,” the victim testified, according to the Magic Valley Times-News. “I was pretty upset. I felt really bad. A little bit betrayed and confused at the same time. It was terrible — a pain I’ve never felt.”

Two of the three boys are being charged as adults, and could face life in prison. A third boy is being charged as a juvenile.

Further, a civil complaint was filed this month against Dietrich High in the U.S. District Court of Idaho, and a copy of the lawsuit was provided to the Washington Post by the alleged victim’s lawyer. The suit names the school and 11 school employees. The suit contends football coaches encouraged students to fight the boy, at one time knocking him unconscious.

The suit also alleges that one of the alleged assailants displayed a Confederate flag and made the victim recent a racist song called “Notorious KKK.”

The alleged victim’s family is seeking $10 million in damages. The school district did not respond to a request for comment from The Post.

Trials for the two students are set to begin later this year.
