Javonte Smart, considered the top point guard in the Class of 2018, has had a busy and productive summer as the video above from our friends at Courtside Films shows.

That included a gold medal with the USA Basketball U-17 team. He is scheduled to play in the Under Armour Elite 24 on Aug. 20 in Brooklyn.

“There is no pressure,” Smart told USA TODAY High School Sports in June. “You just fuel my fire because a lot of guards try to come at me and they’re coming at my head. I’ve just got to stay focused and keep working and just keep playing good.

“A lot of people are trying to come at me because I’m top. If I wasn’t top, I’d do the same. Since I’m supposed to be one of the best point guards, I’m going to keep working like I’ve never been one of the best point guards.”

Smart attends Scotlandville Magnet in Baton Rouge.

Just a few months ago, Collin Sexton was a relatively unknown recruit at Pebblebrook (Mableton, Ga.) High. That has changed quickly.

Sexton, now, is the 12th-ranked player in the class of 2017 according to the 247Sports Composite and holds a host of offers from powers across the country.

No. 3 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) at No. 5 Cedar Hill (Texas), Aug. 27

Two-time defending Super 25 champion Gorman heads to Texas for the highly anticipated and nationally televised season opener. There has been so much anticipation for this game that the trash talking was already going in March.

Gorman puts its 39-game winning streak on the line against a Cedar Hill team that returns 10 starters on offense, including Notre Dame quarterback commit Avery Davis.

“We’ll find out real quick what kind of team we are,” Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire said. “I know how good Bishop Gorman is. This is going to be a great game with great players for both teams. If you’ve won 39 in a row, you’ve done something special. It’s hard to win three in a row, much less 39.”

No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) at No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), Aug. 27

Grayson has been among the biggest stories of the offseason with a coaching change, a large number of transfers and a difficult schedule. We will find out quickly if the attention is warranted when Grayson hosts an IMG team that has elite recruits from around the nation all over the field.

IMG, now its fourth season of high school football, has the benefit of having coach Kevin Wright in his second season and players who have been on campus since July 18 after many took part in spring practice with the program.

No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) at No. 8 Booker T. Washington (Miami), Aug. 26

In last season’s opener, Aquinas ended BTW’s 41-game winning streak with a 35-3 victory on national television. Aquinas QB Jake Allen threw four touchdowns in the victory.

Aquinas would go on to win another Florida 7A title and Booker T. would equal the state record with a fourth consecutive title in 4A. The state champs meet again to open the season.

Tim “Ice” Harris is back on the sideline for BTW after working on the University of Miami coaching staff and he’s talking up a national title run.

“We want our kids to understand we are here to win a title – the national title, not just the state title,” Harris said. “We do the week-to-week thing, but the big picture never disappears because that’s the only purpose why we’re doing this.

MORE: Ice Harris has eyes on big prize in return to BTW

Deerfield Beach (Fla.) at No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), Sept. 16

Deerfield Beach is not ranked in the Preseason Super 25 but is brimming with confidence after a 10-2 season that ended in a regional semifinal loss to eventual 8A state champion Flanagan.

Grayson has some elite players on defense and a potential matchup between defensive back Deangelo Gibbs and Deerfield receiver Jerry Jeudy – an Under Armour All-American who recently committed to Alabama – could be awesome.

“This is my last year. I’m trying to win it all. I’m not playing no games,” Jeudy told the Sun-Sentinel in the spring.

No. 3 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) at No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Sept. 30

If both teams are undefeated by the end of September, this could be the “Game of the Year.”

VIDEO: Watch as St. Thomas Aquinas players learn they are facing Bishop Gorman

As you might recall, Gorman quarterback Tate Martell called out Aquinas among several national powers he wanted the Gaels to face. Aquinas receiver Trevon Grimes, who could end up being Martell’s teammate next year at Ohio State, answered.

Of course, the games are scheduled by the schools and not the players, but this should be a fantastic matchup.

Five other games of note

  • Aug. 27, No. 21 Warren Central (Indianapolis) vs. No. 7 Colerain (Cincinnati)
  • Sept. 2, No. 24 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) at No. 6 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)
  • Sept. 23, No. 15 DeSoto (Texas) at No. 5 Cedar Hill (Texas)
  • Oct. 16, No. 20 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) at No. 14 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
  • Oct. 21, No. 4 IMG Academy at Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville)

The specialists for the Under Armour All-American Game were recently announced by Kohl’s Kicking, which handles the selections. The Under Armour game is Jan. 1 in Orlando.

KICKERS

The kickers are Auburn commit Anders Carlson and Andrew Mevis.

Carlson plays for the Classical Academy in Pike National Forest, Colo., and is ranked as the No. 2 kicker in the Class of 2017 by 247Sports. His brother, Daniel, is the current kicker for Auburn.

Mevis from Warsaw (Ind.) earned his spot based on his showing at the National Scholarship Camp in July.

PUNTERS

The punters are Virginia commit Brian Delaney and Joseph Doyle.

Delaney from Westfield (Chantilly, Va.) is ranked as the No. 2 punter and No. 5 kicker in the class and also has shown a strong leg on kickoffs during Kohl’s camps.

Doyle from Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., charted the second-best in the Class of 2017 at the national scholarship camp in July.

Glennon from Lincolin in Tallahassee, Fla., had a strong showing at the camp with quick snap times and accuracy.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) running back Biaggio Ali Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali, has committed to Cal.

He announced his decision on Twitter on Sunday after a campus visit this weekend.

Ali Walsh, a 5-10, 18-pound running back, was named the Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year last fall, rushing for 2,451 rushing with 36 total touchdowns and an average of 12.1 yards per carry.

rushing for 2,200 yards and 30 touchdowns as a junior as Bishop Gorman won its seventh consecutive state title and a second consecutive Super 25 crown.

He has dedicated his senior season to the memory of his Poppy, who died in June.

Ali Walsh also has already struck up a text relationship with former Cal star Marshawn Lynch, who was among the first to get the news of Ali Walsh’s commitment.

Colin Lemieux from Rhode Island’s Warwick North Little League program absolutely crushed a ball in Saturday’s New England final. The ball left the yard in seconds after he viciously turned on the pitch as noted by our friends at For The Win.

And before he got too far into his trot, he went for the bat flip.

Warwick North won the game against Fairfield American 5-1 and now heads to Williamsport for the Little League World Series, which begins this week.

11 high school football players with big shoes to fill

With graduation comes the opportunity for a new group of high school football players to step into the spotlight left vacant on their teams. Here are several players projected to have some big shoes to fill.

Will Sherman (Photo: 247Sports)

Will Sherman (Photo: 247Sports)

Will Sherman, left tackle, Allen (Texas)

Sherman will move from right tackle to left in an effort to fill the void opened with the departure of Greg Little, now at Ole Miss. Little (6-5, 318) was ranked as the No. 2 player overall in the Class of 2016 by ESPN.com.

A Colorado commit who had 16 reported offers, Sherman is 6-3 and 295 pounds and will be an asset to Allen’s high-powered offense led by senior quarterback Mitchell Jonke and junior Kirby Bennett, one of the top running backs in the state.

The Eagles are ranked No. 18 in the Preseason Super 25.

Corey Bolds (Photo: 247Sports)

Corey Bolds (Photo: 247Sports)

Corey Bolds, defensive tackle, Paramus Catholic (New Jersey)

Bolds will be the key man in the defensive trenches for the Palladins following the graduation of Rashan Gary, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Defensive Player of the Year and the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit. Gary is now at Michigan.

Bolds, one of New Jersey’s most sought-after recruits, is 6-3, 276 and has 17 offers, including Penn State, Michigan, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama and in-state Rutgers. Bolds has said he hoped to announce on his birthday, Sept. 28.

PC, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 3-6 season, also features linebacker Drew Singleton, ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the state.

Conor Bardue and Tre’ Long, quarterback, Lake Stevens (Wash.)

Lake Stevens has not named a starting quarterback yet, but the winner of the competition between Bardue and Long will play the spot occupied by Jacob Eason, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year.

Eason, now at Georgia, led Lake Stevens to a state 4A runner-up finish, throwing for 3,585 yards and 43 touchdowns with a 70% completion rate and six interceptions.

Bardue, now a junior, played in nine games last season behind Eason and completed 11 of 16 passes with one touchdown. Long, a sophomore this season, saw limited action in five games.

Along with Eason, Lake Stevens also loses leading receiver Riley Krenz and leading rusher Andrew Grimes. Hunter Eckstrom, who had more than 1,000 yards rushing and 12 TDs as a junior, returns.

Chase Young, defensive end, DeMatha Catholic (Md.)

Young, the No. 1 recruit in the state of Maryland and an Ohio State commit, is far from an unknown commodity. He is ranked as the No. 3 weak-side defensive end and No. 30 player overall in the Class of 2017.

Young had 19 sacks last season for a DeMatha team that outscored its opponents by more than double last season in winning a third consecutive WCAC title.

He replaces Shane Simmons, who signed with Penn State and was ranked as the No. 14 recruit overall in the Class of 2016 by ESPN.com.

Simmons worked the strong side with Young on the weak side. Expect Young to work mainly on the strong side for DeMatha, ranked No. 9 in the Preseason Super 25.

Re-al Mitchell, quarterback, St. John’s Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.)

They know how to develop quarterbacks at Bosco, including current UCLA star Josh Rosen and Quentin Davis, who threw 40 touchdowns against four interceptions last season.

Next up is Mitchell, who saw plenty of action last season as a sophomore and showed his mettle one of the biggest games of the season in high school football nationally. Mitchell came in with second-ranked Bosco trailing Corona Centennial 34-10 when Davis was injured. He threw two long touchdown passes and scored on a long TD run in a game Bosco eventually lost 62-52, but had his first scholarship offer the next day.

Mitchell takes the reins of a high-powered attack but will be test early by a difficult schedule for the Braves, ranked No. 20 in the Preseason Super 25.

Kellen Mond (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Kellen Mond (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Kellen Mond, quarterback, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)

The Texas A&M commit transfers to IMG Academy in Florida where he will replace Shea Patterson, who was ranked as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback and No. 4 recruit nationally. Patterson is now at Ole Miss.

Mond is ranked as the No. 3 dual-threat QB entering the season and will be tested by one of the nation’s most difficult schedules, including a season-opening game at No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.). He should also benefit from the massive amount of talent around him for the fourth-ranked Ascenders.

Bubba Thompson 8) takes over at quarterback Photo: Jim Halley, USA TODAY Sports)

Bubba Thompson (8) takes over at quarterback Photo: Jim Halley, USA TODAY Sports)

Bubba Thompson, quarterback, McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.)

Thompson replaces Paris Chambers, who was a 7A All-State player, but Thompson looked ready while helping McGill-Toolen win the USA Football National 7on7 Championship last month.

McGill-Toolen is ranked No. 11 in the preseason rankings.

Breydon Boyd, linebacker, Katy (Texas)

Katy had one of the most dominant defenses in America last season and posted 10 shutouts. Boyd was a big part of that effort, but the team loses multiple three- and four- year starters on defense so he could expect a bigger role this season. Among the players lost is leading tackler Paddy Fisher. A Boise State commit, Boyd is 6-4 and 215 and especially potent against the run.

Katy’s defense is far from a one-man show with a group that includes DT Corey Bethley; DE Ryder Anderson, an Arkansas commit; LB Raymond Randle, a Connecticut commit; junior DE Michael Matus; and senior S Keegan Otte.

Katy is ranked No. 12 in the preseason rankings.

Jacob Harris and Justin Golembiowski, linebackers, Torrance (Calif.) North

Four-star starter and Army All-American Mique Juarez has moved on to UCLA, opening up a big hole in the defense. Juarez was ranked as the No. 1 outside linebacker recruit in the nation and No. 11 player overall, along with being the No. 1 recruit in talent-rich California.

And the news got worse when top returning linebacker Jacob Jurado tore his ACL.

That means the returning Harris and Golembiowski will be key in the middle of the defense. Harris certainly has speed as he was part of the 4×100 relay team that set a school record last March.

Back in April, USC offered Marvin Bagley III and younger brother Marcus on the same day.

It appears UCLA is also trying to see if it can reel in both brothers by offering Marcus a scholarship during Marvin’s unofficial campus visit this weekend.

Marvin Bagley, a 6-9 power forward is ranked as as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2018. Marcus, who is already 6-6, is a member of the Class of 2020. The offer to Marcus was confirmed by the Twitter feed of Pheonix Phamily, the Nike-sponsored AAU team Marvin Bagley Jr. runs.

The Bagley brothers began last school year at Hillcrest Prep in Arizona but left in early November.

After being home-schooled, Marvin moved to Southern California and enrolled at Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in January.

After Bagley was ruled ineligible and lost an appeal, the CIF stated that he wouldn’t be eligible until January 2017, which would make it a year from the date he enrolled. However, the CIF later ruled that Bagley can play at Sierra Canyon from the start of the season after the organization received updated transfer paperwork.

Marcus also is enrolled and eligible at Sierra Canyon.

Hunter Greene wins Perfect Game All-American home run derby, then throws 97

Hunter Greene had himself quite a weekend at the annual Perfect Game All-American Classic.

On Saturday, Greene was named the winner of the Jackie Robinson Award as the Perfect Game National Player of the Year. The honor was even more poetic because Greene has worn No. 42 since he was 6 years old and plans to attend UCLA, the same school that Robinson attended.

In the pregame home run derby Sunday, Greene of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) needed five swings to win the final round after Calvin Mitchell hit four. As the video below shows, Greene hit home runs on his first five swings at PETCO Park in San Diego to win the contest.

Greene hit 11 home runs in Saturday’s semifinals to lead the six contestants who advanced to the finals.

Once the game began, Greene was the starting pitcher for the West and touched 97 on the radar gun, the top fastball velocity of any pitcher in the game. Four other pitchers hit 96. He pitched one inning, giving up a hit with a walk and a strikeout.

He also scored a run as the West beat the East 13-0.

Royce Lewis of JSerra (Gardena, Calif.) was named the Most Valuable Player, going 2-for-3 with a two-run triple, a run scored, three stolen bases and a walk. Jacob Gonzalez, the son of former big-leaguer Luis Gonzalez, drove in two runs for the West; he plays for Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Cam Newton, on if he'll let his son play football amid safety concerns: 'Of course'

Much has been made recently about player safety in football. For Cam Newton, though, he’d rather focus on the other side of the proverbial coin.

In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Zach Baron asked Newton if he’d let his son, Chosen, play football, especially with many parents saying they would not allow their children into the sport.

Newton’s response was simple.

“Of course. Why wouldn’t they (other parents) let them play football?” Newton said.

Baron then prodded Newton, pointing out the controversy surrounding concussions and brain damage related to the game.

“But they don’t talk about the joy it brings,” he said. “Super Bowl Sunday trumps every TV rating known to man.”

Dylan McCaffrey, QB, Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.)

The Michigan commit is the son of former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and is ranked as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite rankings. His brother Christian is the Heisman Trophy favorite at Stanford.

While leading Valor Christian (12-2) to a state title last fall, Dylan completed 64.7% of his passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and four interceptions.

“He’s so impressive,” ESPN analyst and quarterback guru George Whitfield told Gannett partner The Detroit Free Press. “The biggest thing I look for in young quarterbacks that are highly touted and they come very decorated is, how well do they handle everything, can they stay on top of everything? Nothing ever seems too big for him. He’s got a no-flinch mentality. … He is always the alpha dog, with a natural organic method of arriving there. How he carries himself, the rest of the guys, no matter where he is, seem to turn and go with him.”

Adam Boselli, TE, Episcopal (Jacksonville, Fla.)

Pat Freiermuth, a four-star tight end in the class of 2018 from the Brooks School (North Andover, Mass.), committed Tuesday to Penn State.

Richard Midgley, who guided Modesto (Calif.) Christian to consecutive Northern California Regional finals in his two seasons, has resigned to accept a scouting position with the Atlanta Hawks, the school announced Monday.

Midgley, who will be responsible for scouting college players on the West Coast, posted a 62-6 record in his return to his alma mater.

Assistant coach Brice Fantazia, also a former Modesto Christian player, has been promoted to head coach. He was an NAIA All-American at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri and then played professionally in Europe for four seasons.

“It wasn’t difficult to accept the position. I’m very excited about the role,” Midgley said during a news conference, according to The Modesto Bee. “The hard bit for me was just thinking about the players I’ve worked with and how hard they’ve worked from April until now, and the improvement. We’re excited about the season and getting them ready, and then it’s like I’m kind of leaving them suddenly. That was the hard bit for me.”

Fantazia will be the school’s third head coach in four seasons. Gary Porter won two state titles and more than 500 games at the school from 1996 to 2014.
