Every team has a Team Mom, providing all the invaluable support that happens behind the scenes away from the field and keeps things running for the players and coaches.

But C.E. Murray (Greeleyville, S.C.) has Sonja Rush-Harvin, USA Football’s Team Mom of the Year.

According to a news release, she was selected from among more than 2,000 women nationwide who were nominated for the honor. Her video submission was chosen from among the 10 finalists as the grand prize winner by USA Football representatives.

Among her contributions: organizing pregame meals, coordinating fundraising events and ensuring practice and game uniforms were washed.

Rush-Harvin will receive a $5,000 grant for equipment and an AED and game day accessories for the school.

The other nine finalists received a $1,500 grant and prize pack. Those finalists were selected from the nominees in an online vote from among 20 weekly nominees over five weeks during the season.

Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) continues to flex its muscles in the USA TODAY/National High School Coaches Association Super wrestling rankings.

The Buccaneers rolled to the team championship at the Mount Madness Wrestling Tournament in Maryland last week.  Blair crowned 10 individual champions, scoring 354 points, which was 161.5 points more than runner-up and host Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore).

One of the biggest changes in the first Super 25 of 2017 is that Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) jumps two spots to No. 2.

The Bears’ rise is a result of their second consecutive championship at The Clash duals in Rochester, Minn..  In winning the championship, Buchanan beat former No. 2 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), which slips to No. 3 this week, and former No. 3 Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, FL), which also drops one spot this week to No. 4.

Breaking into the Top 10 are Olentangy Liberty (Powell, Ohio) at No. 9 and Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, Pa.) at No. 10.

SEM, which will wrestle No. 1 Blair on Jan. 13 in a dual match, jumped three spots after winning the POWERade Tournament in Pennsylvania.

New to the rankings are Park Hill (Kansas City) at No. 12, Kiski Area (Vandergrift, Pa.) at No. 23 and Kasson-Mantorville (Kasson, Minn.) at No. 24.

Shaping next week’s rankings will be the 73rd annual Geary Tournament, the nation’s oldest wrestling tournament, in Oklahoma.  No. 1 Blair will be challenged by Oklahoma powers No. 13 Tuttle, No. 19 Charles Page (Sand Springs) and No. 21 Choctaw in the individual format that also will crown a team champion.

As the countdown to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl continues in San Antonio, officials have revealed the yellow and gold adidas uniforms that the teams will wear.

The uniforms include some special touches to honor the military as noted in a news release from adidas.

Influenced by U.S. Army uniforms and field gear, the 2017 uniforms are centered around a ‘Badge of Honor’ camouflage jacquard pattern that was inspired by military ribbons and infused into the jersey and pants. The color palette features the traditional black and gold U.S. Army colors, black representing knowledge and gold signifying achievement and honor, in order to create a signature look for the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The West team will wear gold and the East team will be in black. …

As a tribute to U.S. Army helicopter pilots, each matte black and matte yellow helmet has been customized with individual player names on the back of the helmet. …

To complete the head-to-toe package, both squads will don special edition “Dipped” monochromatic cleats infused with a reflective digi-camo pattern that mirrors the ‘Badge of Honor’ pattern in the jerseys and pants.

Hamidou Diallo, the No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2017, will announce his college destination in a ceremony on Saturday.

Diallo, from Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut, will return to his hometown of Queens for the announcement.

He has a final six listed of Kentucyk, Arizona, Kansas, Indiana, Syracuse and UConn. Kentucky has long been considered the favorite, although he has visited Kentucky and UConn within the last two weeks. Kentucky coach John Calipari also followed up with an in-home visit.

Reports from 247Sports and ZagsBlog.com among others indicate Diallo intends to enroll in college for the second semester, which begins next week. It is unclear whether he intends to play this season, although UConn has a larger immediate need than the Wildcats.

The Hartford Courant reported that Diallo met with his teammates and packed his belongings Wednesday.

Because he already has graduated high school, Diallo is eligible for the 2017 NBA Draft, although he is expected to wait until 2018. He is rated by most analysts to be among top 10-12 players in the country, regardless of position.

“(Going pro) definitely is an option, but my focus is on getting better,” Diallo said at the City of Palms tournament two weeks ago. “(Recruiting has) been a tough experience and has its ups and downs. But I’m also blessed to have a lot of schools recruiting me who are at a high level.”

Hoop Scoop’s Clark Francis, who has covered high school basketball for more than 30 years, said while he ranks him as his No. 1 fifth-year player, he’s top 10, not top five, in his list of the country’s top seniors.

“I think he needs to go to college for a year. That would help confidence, give him more consistency, help his outside shooting. He can knock down the 3 but he doesn’t do it enough. He also needs to refine his skills and mature.”

Give recruit Aubrey Solomon credit for apologizing after disparaging Michigan remark

aubrey-solomon-repeat

Say this about Aubrey Solomon: He made a mistake, he owned every bit of it and he apologized.

The Army All-American defensive tackle issued a heartfelt apology titled, “I have some growing up to do,” after a Periscope video surfaced of him making a disparaging profane remark about Michigan.

A former Michigan commit, Solomon is down to Michigan, Georgia and Alabama. He has said he likely won’t make a decision until National Signing Day.

During Army Bowl week, the personable Solomon from Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.) has been answering questions — and having fun — about all three schools, including his revelation about Jim Harbaugh’s chocolate milk machine.

MORE: Everything you need to know about U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Sadly, some ardent Michigan followers are failing to recognize that Solomon is a teenager who made a mistake. His mentions on Twitter after the apology were brutal. Maybe he should get credit for standing up, ignoring the hate and moving forward. Isn’t that the type of maturity any fan would want from a player in his or her favorite program?

He told USA TODAY High School Sports after the apology, “In no way did I mean it, but it was said and cannot be undone. I just wanted to apologize for my actions, and by no means does what happened reflect my character.”

Solomon has been one of the top performers during practice and is a finalist for American Family Insurance Defensive Player of the Year and Anthony Munoz Lineman of the Year.

VIDEO: Cassius Stanley adds another crazy dunk to his highlight reel

Harvard Westlake basketball star Cassius Stanley may just be able to live up to the hype, and then some.

The star at Harvard-Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.) is ranked as the No. 9 sophomore basketball player in the country – including the second-best shooting guard and the second overall California recruit.

Stanley’s most dangerous soaring through the air, as he showed again Wednesday night as Harvard-Westlake beat Loyola. His latest was captured by former NBA player Jason Collins.

He’s lethal with the ball in his hands, a threat to pull up from almost anywhere beyond half court. Driving through the lane, once he leaves his feet, he’s a threat to dish to one of his teammates or find a seam for a layup.

When he doesn’t have the ball, make sure a man is tight on him. One nod of his head towards the basket, and teammates will toss it in the vicinity of the basket, trusting Stanley can catch it and slam the alley oop home.

The scary thing is, he rarely works on his dunking skills.

“It just came easy the summer going into sixth grade,” he said. “I just started dunking. My mom ran track, so I don’t really have to work much on my athleticism.”
