Under Armour All-American LB Christopher Allen sticking with Alabama

Under Armour All-American linebacker Chris Allen has shut down his recruitment and will remain committed to Alabama, despite a late push from LSU, he told 247Sports at the North American Championships in Florida.

Allen, from Southern Lab (Baton Rouge) is ranked as the No. 8 outside linebacker and No 106 player overall, according to the 247Sports Composite.

“It’s pretty much shut down,” Allen said, according to 247Sports. “I’m going to Alabama. “It was very hard decision to pass up my home school that’s five minutes away from my house. But you know, ‘Bama has some great coaching staff. Coach Tosh (linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi) and Coach Jeremy (defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt), I really like them. I feel like they’ll get me where I need to be.”

Allen went on an official visit to Alabama last weekend and also had an in-home visit last week with head coach Nick Saban, Pruitt and Lupoi.

He also after making his decision, he met with LSU coach Ed Orgeron to tell him the news. Allen had given LSU fans when he posted a Twitter photo wearing an LSU jersey. The photo took off and was taken as an indication that he was looking to flip from Alabama.

“I liked the picture,” Allen told 247Sports. “So I posted it. I didn’t think it would get that kind of attention that it did.”

Loretta Kakala wasn’t expecting to be named a McDonald’s All American. She actually says she wasn’t even expecting to be nominated.

“It was a blessing to be on the nominations list,” she said. “When I saw my name on the official team, that was really humbling. I wasn’t ranked until recently. Last summer was my first summer playing EYBL and playing on a bigger stage, so I didn’t think I had that much recognition.”

The recognition and praise from her school and community was overwhelming Tuesday when the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance came to her school, Manteca High in California to give her an honorary jersey.

RELATED: McDonald’s All American girls rosters

Manteca is about 75 miles east of San Francisco and she is the first McDonald’s All American from her school and the fourth from San Joaquin County.

The McDonald’s game is March 29 in Chicago.

“It was so exciting,” she said. “I had a lot of my main supporters with my family and from the school so I felt really happy about it.”

Kakala, a 6-3 Louisville signee, is ranked No. 25 overall in the espnW HoopGurlz rankings and No. 2 among post players. She said she had not yet spoken with Dana Evans, her future Louisville teammate from West Side Leadership (Gary, Ind.), who is playing for the East at the McDonald’s game.

After averaging 16 points and 8.5 rebounds as a junior while fighting through injuries, she said opting to play on the Nike EYBL circuit rather than for the smaller AAU program that she had been playing with upped her game.

“Switching was one of the best decisions I made,” she said.  “It helped my mental game a lot. I feel like I’ve become more of a leader than before.”

While she could have transferred to nearby national power St. Mary’s (Stockton), Kakala stuck with Manteca, where she goes to school with her brother.

“The original plan was to go to St. Mary’s, but we decided to stay in town because it became a transportation issue,” she said. “And my dad wanted me to make history in Manteca.”

Days after decommitting from Michigan, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) offensive lineman Kai-Leon Herbert announced he was shutting down his recruitment and remaining in his home state by committing to Miami.

A four-star prospect and the No. 28 offensive tackle in the class of 2017 on the 247Sports Composite ranking, he visited Miami over the weekend and then decided to decommit. The Under Armour All-American who is ranked No. 99 overall by ESPN had been committed to Michigan since July.

Herbert was scheduled to visit Florida this weekend with the potential to make a decision next Wednesday on National Signing Day, but he has canceled that trip.

He is the fifth offensive line recruit in Miami’s class with Navaughn Donaldson of Miami Central and Zach Dykstra of Spirit Lake (Iowa) already on campus.

Herbert’s commitment should continue to bolster a class that is surging in Mark Richt’s first full recruiting cycle.

Dylan Moses is already readying himself for his playing career at the University of Alabama, but he’s still being recognized for his play in high school.

The IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) star linebacker will be recognized Feb. 5 as the Parade Magazine national player of the year.

“If you look at recent history, one of the most highly acclaimed early, so to speak, kids that I had ever heard of,” Ascenders head coach Kevin Wright told Bradenton.com. “He’s had all these different accolades and I think that the first impression of Dylan, when you first meet him, is he’s just this quiet, very humble kid to the point where he’s one of those guys who seems a lot older than what he is, just in regards to maturity.”

Moses, who has already enrolled at Alabama, was named to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA first-team defense last month.

The tournament begins Thursday and features four national team and four teams from Florida. Each of the eight teams will play three games.

The four national teams are Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia), Rainier Beach (Seattle), Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.) and Lone Peak (Utah). Montverde is joined by Lehigh Senior (Lehigh Acres), Windermere Prep and Winter Park as the Florida schools.

The Eagles are 18-2 with both losses coming to No. 4 Memphis East in thrilling fashion.

“Our two losses to Memphis East were both in the last seconds,” coach Kevin Boyle told The Orlando Sentinel. “They’re obviously one of the top five teams in the country and beat us two out of three at the buzzer.  The race for No. 1 [in the nation] is a wide-open race.  We’re still learning and trying to get better as we go along and I think we still have a chance to be competitive in the remainder of the season.”

4 p.m.: Imhotep Charter vs. Rainier Beach

6 p.m.: Winter Park vs. Windermere Prep

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was an ALL-USA linebacker at Divine Child in Michigan (Photo: Bruce Kluckhohn, USA TODAY Sports)

Pat Shurmur is probably best known these days for his work as the Minnesota Vikings’ new offensive coordinator after having the interim tag removed last week.

Shurmur also has been the head coach of the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator and interim coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

But his playing career began as a linebacker at Divine Child in Dearborn, Mich. Shurmur was named to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA football team as a senior in 1982. That was the first ALL-USA team selected when USA TODAY was founded.

Other members of the first ALL-USA team were Rod Woodson, D.J. Dozier, Alonzo Highsmith, Tim McDonald and Doug Reisenberg.

Shurmur went from high school to Michigan State, where he played guard and linebacker as a freshman and started at center for his last three years. He was named All-Big Ten in 1987 and played in the Rose Bowl. Shurmur was actually George Perles’ first recruiting call when took over the Spartans.

“My dad went to medical school at Michigan, and then I was born on campus,” Shurmur told Ohio.com in 2011. “I knew a lot of the coaches there very well. At the time, it was probably a more popular choice to go to Michigan. Michigan State was coming off some sub-par seasons. Anyway, I ended up going to Michigan State, which some people thought was a little bit of an upset. I didn’t think that, though.”

After a brief stint in the corporate world at IBM, he began his coaching career with Michigan State after playing as a graduate student before a season at Stanford and then coming to the NFL.

Shurmur is the nephew of the late Fritz Shurmur, a former NFL defensive coordinator who helped Pat network with Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid when they were with the Green Bay Packers.

Last season, Shurmur was named the interim offensive coordinator before Week 9 for the Vikings. The Vikings average 20.9 points and 332 yards per game with Shurmur running the offense.

“I think Pat did a great job coming in under difficult circumstances,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told the team website Wednesday. “Pat and I have a good relationship, we’re able to communicate very easily.

“Pat is very open to suggestions and ideas, he’s not one of those guys where (he thinks) he kind of knows everything. It’s been good, and I think the relationship with Sam and Pat has been good as well.”

There’s little dispute that Raven Farley-Clark is one of the nation’s top girls basketball players.

The Queen of Peace (Elizabeth, N.J.) star is ranked by ESPN as the 19th best player in the country and has signed with LSU. Still, she said being named a McDonald’s All American was beyond her wildest dreams.

“It didn’t seem real at first,” Farley-Clark said. “It seemed unreal when I was nominated, so when I made it was just icing on the cake. I was shocked an honored. I didn’t think it was something that was going to happen.”

Farley-Clark was recognized Thursday when the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance came to her school to give her an honorary jersey.

“It was a nice experience,” Farley-Clark said. Everyone came out to support me and were happy for me as if they made it. They were probably happier than I was.”

The McDonald’s game is March 29 in Chicago, and Farley-Clark knows she’ll be up against the best of the best.

“Of course I’m looking forward to playing against the best competition,” she said. “I just want to see what I can do against them.”

Farley-Clark plans to use the game as a springboard to her future, as she’ll play next season at LSU.

“I’m just looking forward to playing in the SEC against good competition,” she said. “I want to see what I can do as a freshman and see how I can contribute to my team.”

Jacob Phillips, a four-star linebacker from East Nashville (Tenn.) Magnet School, announced Thursday his commitment to LSU.

Phillips had been committed to Oklahoma since October.

“I just felt comfortable with it,” Phillips said of Oklahoma when he committed. “It was my number one school, I love the coaches there, I love the tradition, so I feel like this is the right decision for me.

“I just woke up one day I knew I wanted to be a Sooner, and that’s what made it.”

Those feelings have since changed, obviously.

Phillips visited Baton Rouge over the weekend and was said to be very close to committing Sunday.

Tennessee’s Mr. Football in Class 3A, Phillips accounted for 123 tackles and three interceptions during his senior season.

Travis Etienne, ranked as the No. 16 running back in the Class of 2017, picked Clemson over LSU on Thursday night and didn’t hesitate to throw down some fighting words toward the school he didn’t pick.

Etienne said he is going to play at “the real Death Valley,” spurning his home state Tigers. He is from Jennings, La.

He made his decision after an official visit to Clemson last weekend and will cancel a scheduled visit to LSU for this weekend. National Signing Day is Wednesday.

Clemson’s offer came two weeks ago and was followed up by a visit from head coach Dabo Swinney. He is the only running back in Clemson’s class thus far. Clemson pursued Ettiene after Cordarrian Richardson decommitted on Dec. 23.

According to NOLA.com, he rushed for 2,952 yards and 43 rushing touchdowns with 251 receiving yards and three touchdowns as a senior.

He has been clocked at 4.43 in the 40-yard dash.
