DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) running back Anthony McFarland announced Friday he’d be staying home, as he committed to nearby Maryland.

McFarland was also considering Miami.

McFarland was planning to announce Wednesday, but he pushed his decision back after an in-home visit with the Maryland coaches. By staying at home, McFarland also gets to play with a number of former DeMatha players, including Tino Ellis, Terrance Davis and Lorenzo Harrison, who all were members of the DeMatha Class of 2016.

Previously one of the top remaining uncommitted players in the country, McFarland ranked 100th in the USA TODAY High School Sports Composite player rankings, and the seventh-best running back.

St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) will experience a unique distinction at the McDonald’s All American Game in Chicago.

It is lone school this year to have two girls players selected, something that has not happened often in McDonald’s All American Game history.

Kasiyahna Kushkituah, a 6-4 center, and Maya Dodson, a 6-3 wing, will represent the school, their families and community – many of whom were on hand Friday as the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance visited to present each player with her honorary jersey.

“It’s really hard for two people from the same school to make it out of 24,” Dodson said. “I’m really happy to go with my teammate. We’ve grown and become best friends throughout our high school careers. I can’t wait to share this moment with her.”

RELATED: See the full McDonald’s All American Game girls roster

Said Kushkituah: “It means a lot to me to go with Maya. She is one of my best friends. We work very hard. We train together, we practice together, we spend time together on and off the court. For both of us to achieve one of our goals that we had together has been amazing.”

Kushkituah, ranked as the No. 55 overall player and No. 6 post by espnW’s HoopGurlz, also will share the experience with her future college teammates. She is one of four Tennessee signess selected to the roster.

Kushkituah, Rennia Davis from Ribault (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Anastasia Hayes from Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) will play for the East. Evina Westbrook from South Salem (Ore.) will play for the West.

“When we all realized we were going, we texted each other to say congrats,” Kushkituah said. “To be able to play with each other before we actually go to Tennessee is amazing. …

“I want to make a statement and play my hardest. I’ve been training really hard, but this is making me train harder so I can perform well when I get there. I also want to have a great time.”

Dodson, ranked as the No. 11 player overall, also will get to spend time with future Stanford teammate Kiana Williams, a 5-7 guard from Karen Wagner High in Texas. Dodson will play for the East with Williams playing for the West.

“We went on the same official visit and I’m excited to build a relationship now before we get to Stanford,” Dodson said. “I want to just take everything in and have fun. It’s an all-star game so I don’t want to take it too seriously, but I also want to go out there and do what I do best —  attack and play good defense and rebound.”

The McDonald’s selection also brought the realization that their high school careers are almost coming to a close.

“I thought about how my high school senior year is almost over,” Kushkituah said, “but I’m happy to spend it in an event like this.”

Virginia Tech adds four-star in-state athlete TyJuan Garbutt

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente has reeled in another in-state star in four-star athlete TyJuan Garbutt.

Garbutt from Riverbend (Fredericksburg, Va.) committed to the Hokies in February but reopened his recruitment in July. An official visit last weekend sealed the deal and he publicly announced his re-commitment Friday on Twitter. He chose Virginia Tech over Pitt.

He used the tagline, “I’m staying Home” before providing more depth about his decision.

Garbutt’s commitment continues a flurry in the final week and a half before National Signing Day, beginning with safety Devon Hunter. Former Rutgers commit athlete Bryce Watts, four-star linebacker Dylan Rivers, who flipped from Penn State; and defensive end Robert Porcher IV, son of the former NFL player, followed.

With Garbutt in the fold, the next major target is massive offensive tackle Mekhi Becton.

“I committed again for the same reason I committed a little less than a year ago,” Garbutt told Fredericksburg.com. “Coach Fuente, [Defensive coordinator Bud Foster], they’re rebuilding. Virginia Tech was once a national power and I think they’re getting back to that level.”

According to the site, he had 78 tackles, nine sacks and six forced fumbles this season. He also had 545 receiving yards and 228 rushing yards with 10 total touchdowns as a receiver.

Army All-American receiver Jamire Calvin commits to Nebraska

The Southern California to Nebraska connection added another member Friday when U.S. Army All-American wide receiver Jamire Calvin committed to Huskers in a four-word tweet.

Calvin from Cathedral (Los Angeles) committed to Oregon State at the Army Bowl on Jan. 7 and then decommitted 10 days later. He then committed Friday, 10 days after his decommitment. Calvin acknowledged at the Army Bowl that he changed his mind midweek and decided on Oregon State. He initially was planning to commit to Nebraska and some reports indicated he had been a silent commit to the Huskers for months.

He told the Lincoln Journal Star that the last month was “stressful, confusing, difficult, but I’m just happy to be where I am now. …”Just a relief. Yeah, a relief. I’m going to rely on God no matter what my situation is. Just going from there, and make the best of my opportunity.”

As for why he chose Nebraska, he said, “The one answer that I’d say the most is it’s just where I felt most comfortable.”

He joins the Calabasas (Calif.) duo of receiver Keyshawn Johnson Jr. and quarterback Tristan Gebbia as Nebraska commits from Southern California. Both are already enrolled. Wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey is also from Southern California but played his high school football primarily at Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas).

Calvin has been timed at 4.49 in the 40 and posted 14 touchdowns and more than 1,300 receiving yards as a senior.

Gary Trent Jr. would be among the top basketball players in the nation no matter where he played.

Trent, a Duke signee ranked as the No. 8 player in the ESPN 100, moved from Apple Valley (Minn.) to Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.) at the start of the school year and has continued to dominate against Prolific’s national schedule.

Trent has become a more diversified player, not just scoring, but rebounding, passing and defending.

“The transition has been pretty smooth,” said Trent, a 6-5 shooting guard. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to come to Napa, Calif., and play for a fantastic program. It’s done nothing but prep me for college next year and that was the point of coming here. It’s really taught me time management and dealing with traveling every weekend and still putting up numbers. It has continued to prep me for everything I can look forward to in college.”

Before he gets to Duke, Trent is among the players selected for the McDonald’s All American Game on March 29 in Chicago. Trent received his honorary jersey Friday as part of the McDonald’s Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance before Prolific faces Aspire Academy (Phoenix) as part of the Grind Session’s Crush in the Valley.

“It’s a dream come true,” Trent said of being selected. “I’ve wanted this for a long, long time. It’s one of the accomplishments I’ve been working for since I was a little kid and watching the game every year. It’s a special feeling and I’m really thankful to have the opportunity to showcase my basketball talents on national television.”

Even though the McDonald’s game is essentially an all-star game with only days to prepare, Trent said he plans to treat it like “a championship game.”

“I’m not looking at it like an all-star game,” he said. “I want to have fun, but there are NBA scouts there and people watching on television. I want show how I can play with great players and how I’ve continued to develop my game and all the things I’ve been working on.”

While the long-discussed package deal with Trent and Michael Porter Jr. did not happen, the two will be on the same team against the McDonald’s game. Porter, who plays for Nathan Hale (Seattle), is committed to Washington.

“I’m looking forward to playing with Michael Porter,” Trent said. “I’ve known him since second grade and we were on the same AAU team in second, third, fourth grade, all the way through elementary school. It will be good to reconnect with a longtime good friend.”

As for Duke, Trent is keeping close watch on the Blue Devils, who are 15-5 and ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“I have their schedule and I’m keeping up with everything,” Trent said. “I see the losses and wins. I’ve been talking to the coaches and getting an idea of what’s going on. I can’t wait to get there. I’m really looking at it as if I have a magnifying glass to see everything I can and … taking it in.”

And the show goes on …

No. 5 Chino Hills (Calif.) jumped to an 18-2 lead, scoring 18 consecutive points after allowing the first basket, and rolled to a 124-102 victory against Damien (La Verne, Calif.) before a sold-out crowd.

The win was No. 22 in a row this season and No. 57 overall. That equals the fourth longest winning streak in California history with San Anselmo Drake (1980-82), according to CalHi Sports.

LiAngelo Ball had 52 points and made 10 threes to lead the Huskies. Ball was named an American Family Insurance Midseason ALL-USA Player of the Year candidate this week. Older brother, Lonzo, won the award last year.

He had 27 at halftime as Chino Hills led 64-46 before Eli Scott scored 13 points in the third quarter and the lead ballooned to 96-72. Scott finished with 29 points and 23 rebounds.

Chino Hills equaled the state record with 18 games of 100 or more points last season. The Huskies have 11 thus far, including the last four games.

Nathan Hale, the No. 1 team in the Super 25, won the Battle of Seattle on Friday night with a 69-65 nationally televised victory against Garfield in Hale coach Brandon Roy’s return to his alma mater.

Michael Porter Jr. had 34 points, including five three throws in the final 37 seconds, to help Hale seal the victory and remain undefeated (17-0).

Hale beat Garfield 87-64 at the Les Schwab Invitational in Portland in December, but this game was different. Fans lined up for hours beforehand to get into the Garfield gym where Roy’s No. 4 hangs in the rafters. Washington coach Lorenzo Romar was there to see several of his future players, including Porter, but Washington Gov. Jay Inslee was there as was rapper Macklemore.

“Games like these are the games you live for in an environment like this, in-town rivals,” Porter said. “This was a game we had to battle and and it didn’t come easy for us. I’m proud of our team.”

Jaylen Nowell, another Washington signee, scored six consecutive points for Garfield to cut the lead to 64-60 with 1:20 remaining. Garfield got a steal and then called a timeout.

Garfield thought it had another basket to cut the margin to two, but officials called a held ball on a block attempt as Porter extended his long arms. The arrow pointed to Hale, setting up Porter’s opportunity to close it out with free throws.

A Garfield three cut the margin to four, but Porter then finished with two free throws.

Nowell finished with 20 points for Garfield (15-3).

Hale has three regular season games remaining before the postseason begins.

“We have to keep working every day in practice and not get complacent,” Porter said. “We have big dreams and big goals and now it’s time to go get them.”

A four-star wide receiver recruit was cited last week during his official visit to Ohio State for marijuana possession, according to multiple reports, citing Franklin County Municipal Court records.

James Robinson, an Under Armour All-American from Lakeland, Fla., was charged with one count after being taken into custody at an off-campus apartment on Jan. 21. He was released that night. He is scheduled for arraignment on March 1.

Robinson objected to the characterization that he was arrested.

He must pay a court fee of $93 and the misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of $150.

Robinson, listed at 6-4 and 207 pounds, is ranked as the No. 14 wide receiver in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite. He was scheduled to take his last official visit to Ole Miss this weekend.

Robinson will announce his decision Wednesday on National Signing Day with Florida considered the favorite.

Sage Surratt from Lincolnton (N.C.) eclipsed 50 points for the second time this week, posting a career-high 57 in a 140-84 victory against Bandys, according to The Charlotte Observer.

The total is No. 7 for a game in NCHSAA state history.

He also tied a state record with four consecutive games of 40 or more points and has 191 points in that span.

Surratt continues to climb the state career scoring charts as well. With 2,619 points, he is fourth. The state record is 3,307, which could be possible with a deep postseason run.

The 6-4 Surratt is committed to Wake Forest to play football, but maybe Danny Manning’s squad could use a little help too.

Mac Jones plays his last high school football game days before he signs with Alabama and he’s proud he gets to do with the letters USA on his jersey.

Jones, from The Bolles School (Jacksonville, Fla.), is a quarterback for the USA Football Under-19 team that will face Team Canada on Sunday at the North American Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

“It’s really a privilege to get invited to an event like this when you can represent your country against another country,” Jones said. “To play your final game before you go to college and be able to put USA on your chest, that’s something you want to do for pride in representing your country and something you can tell your kids about.”

Jones, ranked as the No. 12 pro-style quarterback by the 247Sports, Composite, will sign his letter of intent Wednesday on National Signing Day, ending a process that saw him commit to Kentucky in July 2015, and then decommit and commit to Alabama last July.

He took an official visit to Alabama last weekend after an unofficial visit in September. That was before freshman Jalen Hurts established himself at quarterback and led the Crimson Tide to the national title game.

“It’s definitely a relief,” he said. “It’s been pretty crazy. I was committed somewhere else and then had to decommit and I learned a lot from that. I was fortunate to have 24 offers or something like that and I had a lot of options.

“I feel comfortable. It’s going to be exciting, but it’s going to be tough when I get there. Recruiting is fun and it’s different, but then you get put back into the real world when you sign the paper. You go back to being a freshman and you’re not that big fish in a small pond anymore. You have to earn your respect from your teammates and go back to the basics.”

Jones spoke with USA TODAY High School Sports on the eve of the North American Championships about Team USA, his legendary high school coach and his future at Alabama.

Q: What has this week been like?

A: It’s been an unbelievable experience so far — just meeting some of the players, and the coaches have done a great job of installing the plays and practice. I’m happy that I came. It’s been fun to learn a new offense and hopefully everything goes well and we can beat Team Canada.

Q: How did you get involved with USA Football?

A: I did a couple of regional camps when I was a sophomore, and I think they know me from there and that’s why I was selected. I know a lot of the people involved. Everything I’ve done with them, it always has been really organized and a fun experience throughout the whole deal.

Q: Your high school coach, Corky Rogers, is among the legends in Florida high school football. Most wins, most state titles, one of the few in the nation with 400 wins. What was your experience like playing for him?

A: I’ve known him since I was like 5. His grandson played with me and he watched me grow up. He sort of knew I was going to be his quarterback all along and I knew he was going to be my coach. One of my dreams was going to that school to play for him.

I got to see how everything works going to that school from pre-K. The high school players come to the lower school and say hi and I got to the do that this year. It was a really great experience to switch places — from being that little kid who wanted to play football and then doing it and coming back doing the reverse.

He’s been a great coach and a great person. He turned me into a much better person than I was when I started out at Bolles so I’m grateful for him. He’s struggling a bit with his health right now and he’s going to do what’s best for him, but regardless of that, he’s had a great career and it’s been a pleasure to play for him.

Q: You haven’t played since the state final in early December. Any trouble getting the pads on again this week with only a few days of practice to prepare?

A: I took a break after football season, and it’s been good to get back into it and start throwing again. Getting hit a little bit always helps. It’s not foreign, but it’s good to get the pads back on. Having done it for so long, it’s not that big of a deal.

Q: Jalen Hurts had a great freshman year at Alabama. How did that affect your decision or potentially changing your decision?

A: I knew going into my decision that he was going to be the guy. I’m sticking with my decision. He did a great job and Coach Saban was happy with him. I’m looking forward to getting there and the competition.

We’re different players. He’s more of a dual-threat guy and I’m more of a pocket passer pro-style. We bring different assets to the table. That’s something that I thought about in my decision. He’s a great guy and I’m looking forward to having him as my mentor for the first couple of years. I’m looking forward to competing and putting my head down and getting to work.

Q: The other quarterback in this recruiting class is Tua Tagovailoa from Hawaii. He’s already on campus as an early enrollee. Does that give him an advantage?

A: Not too much. It’s good he’s there early. He’s like Jalen as more of a dual-threat QB. Tua is a great kid and I’m looking forward to competing with him, too. He’s a good talented quarterback. I met him at the Elite 11 in Los Angeles. We got to spend some time together. I saw him throw the ball around, and I made my decision after that. I have some family in Hawaii so we talked about that.

Q: Alabama has a new offensive coordinator since you committed with Steve Sarkisian taking over for Lane Kiffin. Have you had a chance to get to know him?

A: I got to spend my time during my official and he came to my house for an in-home visit. He didn’t even really talk about football. He talked about his life, and that when I come to campus, how he’s going to help me out. He said it’s already stressful enough on being a QB and he will be there to give me advice. If I have any problems, just come to him and he’s going to serve as that father figure type role. I was excited to hear that.

No. 14 Hamilton Heights Christian (Chattanooga, Tenn.) beat Southwest Christian (Ark.) in the nightcap of the 26th annual New Albany (Miss.) Hotbed Classic.

The final was played in two gyms, and that was because of 6-10 Canadian junior center Kaosi Ezeagu.

That was because Ezeagu broke the backboard on dunk late in the third quarter, as captured in the video above from MaxPreps. The game was moved to another gym nearby where it resumed after a delay of three hours and two minutes — and there was another game to come.

Hamilton Heights was leading by 22 points at the time of the delay.

Ezeagu finished with four points and three rebounds, but also was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Game for Hamilton Height.
