Under Armour All-American Myles Brennan still excited to be an LSU Tiger

It has been just over a week since LSU fired head coach Les Miles, but even with the current upheaval on the coaching staff, star quarterback commitment Myles Brennan still says he’s devoted to playing in Baton Rouge.

“Right now I’m still committed,” Brennan said Thursday. “I’m just waiting to see who they bring in and what type of offense that’s gonna be. I feel like I can fit most of the offenses pretty well. It would have to be Wing-T or triple option or some crazy offense for me to reconsider.

“I feel like I have the upper hand to wait and see what happens. If it’s good, great. If it’s bad, then I can pursue it and reopen my recruitment and go from there.

“Right now I’m just excited to be committed and be a Tiger.”

The St. Stanislaus QB was honored at his school as part of the American Family Insurance Selection Tour, as he received his Under Armour All-America jersey in front of friends, family, and teammates.

“The whole family was there, my coach and athletic director, and the whole student body was there. It was a real special occasion and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Brennan said.

The game, which will be played Jan. 1 in Orlando, will offer Brennan another chance to compete with the nation’s top players. He’s had that opportunity before, and he’s looking forward to having it again.

“It’s going to be great to be able to compete with the best of the best down in Orlando. It’s something that I looked forward to when I got chosen to go out to Oregon for The Opening,” he said. “I was just excited to go out and compete with the best athletes in the country, and I’ve been given another opportunity to do so, and I’m looking forward to that.

“I can’t wait to get down there and enjoy the process, and also see parts of the country I’ve never seen before, and at the same time doing what I love, and that’s playing football.”

Brennan still has a lot to think about, though, with regards to his college choice. He discussed his close relationship with Miles—he made him cry, after all—and how that is weighing on his decision.

“I did have a pretty strong relationship with Les and (assistant coach) Cam (Cameron), and we still talk,” he said. “But now it’s time to switch gears and build relationships with the rest of the coaching staff. It’s important from my perspective to have a good relationship with the coaches that I’ll be with for the next four or five years.”

But, given that relationship with Miles, would Brennan consider following the coach, should he end at a new school? Or is he more committed to being a Tiger?

“Probably more committed to LSU. When I committed I not only committed to Les and Cam, but I also committed to the school,” Brennan said. “That’s a big part of it. I just fell in love with not only the football aspect but the school itself.

“Being a Tiger excites me every time I think about it.”

Four-star defensive end Ryan Johnson receives Under Armour All-American jersey

It wasn’t just another day Friday for St. Paul’s Episcopal (Mobile, Ala.) defensive end Ryan Johnson. In fact, in his own words, it was a big day.

Johnson was presented an honorary Under Armour All-America Game jersey Friday at his school as part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance.

“It was great just to have everyone come and support me.,” he said afterward. “It has been a lot of hard work to get to where I am, and to have everyone at my school and my family there just means a lot.”

The game, which will be played Jan. 1 in Orlando, gives Johnson a chance to prove himself among the nation’s best, and he also hopes it will serve as a learning and growing opportunity.

“I just hope to better myself as a player, being around all these great athletes from across the country,” he said. “I just want to do the best I can and build on what I’ve done as a player and a person.”

And he has done quite a lot as a player. So much, in fact, that he has pulled in nearly 40 scholarship offers from schools across the country. He has pared that list down a bit, but he doesn’t plan on deciding on his future school quite yet.

“I’m probably down to six or seven teams,” Johnson said. “I plan to take my official visits sometime soon, so I’m kind of narrowing things down but I’m not really sure when I’ll commit, but it will probably be sometime in January.”

It’s plenty reasonable to assume, though, that Johnson will do a lot of thinking about Alabama and Auburn, given he’s from the state. He acknowledged this fact, though he insisted this is plenty more than a two-horse race.

“When you’re from Alabama, everybody dreams of playing for Alabama and Auburn, but I’m not just choosing between those two,” Johnson said. “They’re both high on my list, but I’m not going to say it’s just an in-state battle.

“I’m still open to a few schools, but (Alabama and Auburn) are great schools with great programs.”

Tadarian Moultry's journey from shooting victim to Army All-American

Linebacker has been a pivotal need for Auburn in the Class of 2017. After three senior starters departed due to graduation and the Tigers only signed on linebacker last February, Auburn needed to find the next wave of talent at the position.

That began with Tandarian Moultry’s commitment at the Jackson-Olin (Birmingham, Ala.) spring game. At the time, he was only the fourth commit for 2017 for the Tigers, who are now up to 14.

Moultry, an inside linebacker, will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Chandler Wooten, an outside linebacker from North Cobb (Kennesaw, Ga.), will play in the Under Armour All-America Game.

Moultry received his honorary jersey for the Army Bowl on Friday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

The Auburn commitment and the Army Bowl selection represent new chapter for Moultry, whose sophomore season ended before it even began after he was shot in the calf in July 2014.

“The only thing I was thinking about was just playing football,” Moultry recalled, according to AL.com. “I hadn’t even played a down of high school football yet.

“The only thing I was think about was could I still play football,” he added. “God, please let me still play football. Let me be able to run. I’d pray every night, and I still do. I’m still thankful that I’m still here today.”

The experience changed him and provided a new lease on life. He says he has a better attitude, he has stopped hanging out with a rough crowd and has made sure to serve as a role model for his younger brothers, who were in attendance for Friday’s ceremony.

Being an Army All-American also does seem likely to change his mindset. He is ranked as the No. 6 inside linebacker in the class and the No. 7 player in Alabama, according to 247Sports.com.

“I don’t consider myself a big-time linebacker,” he told SECCountry last spring. “If you say I’m good, well, then I just say I’m still working. But I never say I’m better than somebody else. I see somebody else’s technique and I say, OK, I need to work on my hips some more.”

The Jan. 7 Army Bowl is a chance for the best to play against the best. Expect Moultry to be looking forward to the opportunity.

Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly restrained in on-field brawl at brother's high school game

With Ole Miss off this weekend for the bye, quarterback Chad Kelly returned to Western New York to his high school alma mater to watch his younger brother play.

Casey Kelly took a late hit out of bounds, according to reports, and Chad headed on to the field. Chad Kelly, wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, was restrained in an effort to get him back to the sideline.

Casey is a sophomore quarterback at St. Joseph’s Collegiate, which was playing Bishop Timon on Friday night.

Timon was leading 2-0 with 6:30 left in second quarter at the time of the hit.

It does not appear Chad Kelly got all the way across the field to the other sideline before he was stopped and pushed back.

The game was suspended after the brawl and officials had to escorted off the field by Buffalo police, according to reports.

Police also helped the St. Joe’s team to its buses to leave the stadium. No arrests were made.

Chad led St. Joseph to a state title as a junior and the state title game as a senior. He threw for more than 3,000 yards and ran for nearly 1,000 with a combined 41 touchdowns in his final high school season.

Kendall Breland, a 5-foot-8 senior from Laurel, Miss., became the first female high school football player to score a touchdown in the state of Mississippi, according to LuckyShow.org, a site that tracks touchdowns by females.

Breland, usually a defensive tackle, scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. Laurel won the game, 61-14, against Wingfield (Jackson, Miss.).

“She is special,” coach Todd Breland told The Chronicle. “She’s been with us for three years now and she’s never asked for anything. I don’t think she has ever missed a practice. It’s something we planned to do if we had the opportunity.

“The rest of the team took a lot of pride in what we did,” Breland added. “I don’t think you could have put the Green Bay Packers’ defensive line in front of them and stop them from letting her get in the end zone.”

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Lamont Wade from Clairton, Pa.

As noted by For The Win, a bunch could have gone wrong here — starting with the juggled snap. But he avoids a would-be tackler with a spectacular hurdle and bounces off another, doesn’t step out of bounds and he’s off to the end zone for a 73-yard score.

Clairton pounded Aliquippa 52-16 to remain unbeaten at 6-0.

RELATED: 4-star Florida State commit goes hurdling on way to end zone

Wade ran for touchdowns of 73, 60, 70 and 46 yards and finished with 259 yards rushing on 11 carries on a muddy field. He also threw a touchdown and intercepted a pass on defense.

He has 25 scholarship offers and defense is where his future might be as he is ranked as the No. 9 cornerback recruit in the class by Rivals.com. An Under Armour All-American, he plans to announce his college choice on Dec. 17.

“I was just real pumped about this game,” Wade told PennLive.com. “The phrase big time players make big time plays in big times games hits home right now.”

Russell County (Seale, Ala.) is celebrating a football victory today for the first time in more than 1,000 days.

The Warriors snapped a 29-game losing streaks with a 20-17 victory against Northview (Dothan) on Friday night.

Russell County’s last win was Oct. 25, 2013 — a 35-0 victory against B.T. Washington. That’s a span of 1,074 days.

The team got close twice earlier this season with a pair of one-point losses to  Valley and Dothan earlier this season.

“We had two close losses earlier this year and maybe we learned from them,” Warriors coach Dwight Jones told AL.com. “We finished it. It wasn’t easy; they blocked a punt and could have gotten into it. But the kids played hard, and we didn’t turn the ball over.”

With LSU interim coach Ed Orgeron watching, Tigers quarterback commit Myles Brennan tied the Mississippi state high school record for career touchdowns and set the state career mark for total offense.

Brennan from St. Stanislaus (Bay Saint Louis) already had the record for career passing yards.

Brennan was 8-for-11 for five touchdowns in a 56-14 victory at Bay High. That gave him 144 touchdowns passes to equal the mark set by former St. Stanislaus quarterback Dylan Favre.

Favre also held the mark for total offense with 14,262. Brennan’s had 256 total yards Friday to eclipse that mark.

Brennan , who received his Under Armour All-America Game jersey Thursday, said he remains committed to LSU.

“Right now I’m still committed,” Brennan told USA TODAY High School Sports. “I’m just waiting to see who they bring in and what type of offense that’s gonna be. I feel like I can fit most of the offenses pretty well. It would have to be Wing-T or triple option or some crazy offense for me to reconsider.”

No. 14 Colerain (Cincinnati) notched the 500th win in the football program’s history Friday night with a 47-8 win against Middletown (Ohio).

The Cardinals move to 7-0 and 4-0 in the Greater Miami Conference. Colerain has won 56 consecutive games in the conference, dating back to 2008.

Colerain got the scoring started early with a 2-yard touchdown run by Monalo Caldwell just 57 seconds into the game. The play was setu p by a fumble recovery by Colerain linebacker Kyle Bolden on Middletown’s first play from scrimmage.

Caldwell added a 4-yard TD run with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter and Colerain cruised from there. A 14-0 lead after the first quarter turned into a 41-0 bulge by halftime.

The Cardinals were led by QB Deante Smith-Moore, who completed 9 of 14 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Caldwell added 99 yards on 13 carries.

Colerain’s defense held the Middies to 157 total yards and minus-16 yards rushing.
