Major Tennisson, a tight end from Bullard (Texas), has committed to Alabama following his official visit over the weekend, he announced on Twitter.

The 6-6 Tennison is ranked as the No. 11 tight end prospect in the nation and the No. 44 overall prospect in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite, which lists him as a three-star recruit.

A former Texas commit, he is the second tight end to commit to Alabama for the Class of 2017, joining Kedrick James of  La Vegas (Waco, Texas), who is listed as the No. 12 tight end.

The home plate umpire for an Arizona Junior Fall Classic game in Peoria heard the sounds of the national anthem coming from the adjacent main stadium at the San Diego Padres complex.

So he stopped the game and stepped from behind the plate and removed his hat. The catcher and batters removed their helmets and then everyone followed as well.

For Under Armour All-American Cyrus Fagan, family matters

During the course of the interview, he used the word family often — speaking about his own family, how the Seminoles players seem like family and how the coaches are like “the fathers” of the family keeping everyone straight.

On Tuesday at Mainland High (Daytona Beach, Fla.), the four-star safety again referenced family — both his teammates and his parents and siblings — as he accepted his honorary jersey for the Under Armour All-America Game during the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance.

In a tweet with photos from the event, Fagan wrote “My Familia” and a thankful emojoi.

Fagan, a Florida State commit ranked No. 5 at his position by ESPN.com, will end his high school career in the Jan. 1 game in Orlando.

He is a big reason why Mainland is 8-0 heading into the regular season finale. The Buccaneers have allowed only seven points in their last three games and 80 points total in eight games.

Tadarrell Slaton was always bigger than the other kids. He was 6 feet tall coming out of elementary school.

Now he’s 6-5, 350 pounds and the No. 2 offensive guard prospect in the nation with more than 20 offers and a U.S. Army All-American.

With the next level looming, Slaton is looking to get smaller. His goal is to get down to 280-290 pounds.

“I’m trying to get as low as I can before I get to college,” he said. “Some coaches have given me a number of like 280-290. I got a lot of work to do. It will help with my speed, strength, make my footwork quicker.”

Slaton continues to be dominant at the high school level, helping lead unbeaten American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.).

He celebrated his selection to the Army Bowl on Monday with family, friends and teammates when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

“I feel like we have a big chance to go undefeated because of the coaching staff and how they’re working us hard every day in the weight room, doing a lot of field work and all the motivational stuff. The way they push us is good.”

Heritage has won three state titles and been to the title game seven times in the last decade, but has a new coach this season in former NFL defensive back Patrick Surtain, who was the team’s defensive coordinator.

“There hasn’t really been a change because he was here before,” Slaton said. “We knew him. Coach Pat just moved to a different role, but he’s the same guy, running the same schemes and getting the job done.”

Aside from the stability that his massive frame provides, Slaton has gotten a reputation for being good with his hands to fend off the defensive lineman.

“My coach always tells me: Focus on the timing and punching it and grabbing. My coach has been big on that in being effective with the punch, being on time with it and don’t lean forward when you do it.”

Slaton’s next step will be to make official visits. He has visits planned to Michigan and Virginia Tech and said he is working on Tennessee. He also hopes to visit Ole Miss and Florida and said he has “no leader” at this point.

He also is looking forward to the Army Bowl on Jan. 7 in San Antonio and the practices that go beforehand.

“I just want to get the experience or being around all the other top athletes and coaches who will be there,” he said.

Michigan commit Dylan McCaffrey adds to family Army All-American Bowl legacy

Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) quarterback Dylan McCaffrey is the son of former NFL receiver Ed McCaffrey, younger brother of Stanford All-American running back Christian McCaffrey and older brother of elite sophomore quarterback Luke McCaffrey, which means spots in the family’s trophy case are hard to come by.

“It’s pretty tough,” said Dylan, a four-star recruit who is committed to Michigan. “We’ve definitely got some talent.”
Monday’s achievement should easily earn him another spot.
McCaffrey, a Michigan commit, was presented with his honorary jersey for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as part of the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance. The game is Jan. 7 in San Antonio’s Alamodome at 1 p.m. (ET).
“Oh yeah, getting the jersey will help,” McCaffrey said with a laugh. “This is such an honor, it’s been a dream of mine to play in this game for years; to be playing in it now is such a blessing. It’s perfect timing, too.”
McCaffrey is ranked as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Colorado.

Christian played in the Army Bowl in January 2014 and is noted for a punt return from the game that has been viewed thousands of times.
As for Valor Christian, after “a rough start”, McCaffrey has led the Eagles (5-3) to an undefeated record in league play.
It’s precisely the type of momentum they’ll need in order to repeat as state champs.
“I’d heard people talk about how hard it is to win back-to-back,” McCaffrey said. “It’s very hard now that I’m trying to do that. I feel like we’ve got what it takes, we just have to get tougher and continue to take it to the next level every week. All the pieces we need are here, it’s up to us to put to together and execute.”

A great weekend for Toneil Carter kept on going when the Langham Creek (Houston) running back received his honorary jersey for the Under Armour All-America Game on Monday.

Carter, a Georgia commit, ran for five touchdowns with 282 yards on 32 carries in a 62-38 victory against Cypress Creek (Cypress) over the weekend. The effort came in front of Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee, who traveled to Texas for the game.

Carter is ranked as the No. 10 running back and No. 96 player overall by ESPN.

Carter celebrated his selection to the Jan. 1 Under Armour game with family and teammates as the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to high school.

On the season, Carter has 15 touchdowns for a Langham Creek team that is 6-2 and has posted more than 500 yards in total offense in each of the last four games.

Alabama commit VanDarius Cowan off HS team, appealing Army Bowl suspension

Alabama commit VanDarius Cowan has been “indefinitely suspended” pending appeal from participating in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the game’s national recruiting director Erik Richards told USA TODAY Sports on Monday.

Cowan was scheduled to receive his honorary jersey Tuesday in a ceremony at the school. The ceremony has been canceled, according to a spokesman.

The cancellation comes after Cowan, ranked as the No. 4 outside linebacker according to the 247Sports Composite, was removed from the team at Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High, according to the Palm Beach Post. His dismissal from the team is believed to be related to an incident in last Thursday’s game.

According to the Post, coach Rob Freeman took Cowan out of the game after he got two penalties in the first quarter, including an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

After he was benched, Cowan “ate on the sidelines, was seen talking to fans through the fence behind the bench and paid little attention to the game,” according to the Post. The game was on local television and Cowan was seen dancing and eatingg a hotdog, the Post said.

On Twitter, Cowan said, “I ate a pack of skittles An talked to my mother during the game an I paid attention the whole game even talked An helped my teammates.”

Palm Beach Gardens lost to Wellington 12-10.

The Army Bowl bylaws require a player to complete the last game of high school season in order to be eligible.

“Ninety percent of the time it’s because of an injury,” Richards said. “A player doesn’t finish the season and then wants to play in the Army Game and puts himself in jeopardy of getting hurt again. Ten percent of the time it’s  for situations like this.”

“There are two sides to every story and he has an appeal process that we have been told he and his family are planing to take advantage of. The selection committee and management team will look at the situation after that.”

Richards said the process could take up to two weeks.

In a message to USA TODAY High School Sports after the ceremony was canceled, Cowan said, “I talked to my U.S. Army coach and he said I’m still fine to play in the Army game.” He declined further comment and later issued statement on Twitter:

Cowan spent last weekend in Tuscaloosa on his official visit. In several messages on Twitter, he said the situation will not impact his scholarship and wished his teammates luck.

“Talked to Bama Staff My Scholarship still stands 150% now just going to finish strong with my grades An get back lifting weights …  Wish my team the best of luck stayed all four years wish I could’ve finished the last right but everything has a meaning  … Definitely going to miss going to war with them boys

Jonah Melton passed the one-year anniversary of his commitment to North Carolina last week.

Melton, a guard from Eastern Alamance (Mebane, N.C.), grew up a Tar Heels fan and made a strong commitment that he never wavered from.

He will be with the Tar Heels when he returns to the field after tearing an ACL in April, forcing him to miss his senior season.

While he won’t play, Melton was invited to the Under Armour All-America Game and received his honorary jersey Tuesday when the Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance came to his school.

The Under Armour game is Jan. 1 in Orlando.

“My dream on the field is to be the best I can and play every play like its my last,” Melton said.

Melton is ranked as the No. 16 guard and No. 5 player overall in the state of North Carolina, according to ESPN.

Melton, 6-4 and 290, is a dominant blocker and strong at the point of attack. He expects to come back stronger than ever.

D1Gridiron is a partner of USA TODAY High School Sports

Redlands East Valley (Calif.) defensive end Jaelen Phillips was a member of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Team and one of 10 midseason candidates for ALL-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

Ranked as the No. 1 weakside defensive end in the nation and the No. 5 player overall by the 247Sports Composite, Phillips has led Redlands Valley to a 6-2 record and has been the leader of the defense after turnover from last season.

“Being a senior, I’ve really had to step up and lead the defense,” he told D1Gridiron.com. “I call the majority of the defenses during the game, so acting as an on-field Captain has been a fun responsibility but I believe that I’ve handled it well so far.”

An Army All-American, Phillips committed to UCLA in April, although he intends to visit Washington.

As for what he loves about playing defense, Phillips said it’s “the ability to make big plays on every play, and also how it’s more team oriented; all 11 players need to do their job to be successful. Sacks are fun, too.”

A year after a 6-6 season that ended with a disappointing one-point loss to Allen in the playoffs, DeSoto (Texas) is 8-0 and ranked No. 7 in the Super 25.

DeSoto is outscoring its opponents 372-139 and has scored more than 40 points in all but one game heading into Friday’s game against Nimitz (Irving). The offense has been bolstered by the arrival of transfer Shawn Robinson, a TCU commit four-star quarterback from Guyer (Denton).

Wide receiver KD Nixon has been among the beneficiaries with a career-high six touchdowns thus far and a whopping average of 23.1 yards per catch.

Nixon, a four-star recruit who was a one-time Tennessee pledge, committed to Colorado on Oct. 18, joining teammate Xavier Newman in the Buffaloes’ recruiting class.

And in case you are wondering, his given first name is Kaddarian, hence KD.

USA TODAY High School Sports caught with Nixon for our weekly Twitter Q&A to talk DeSoto’s season, Robinson’s impact and more.

Q: Why do you think the team has been so successful this season?

A: This team has been special since middle school. We’ve been wanting this for a long time now and we all a family … This team has a bond nobody understands.

Q: What impact has Shawn Robinson’s arrival had as the quarterback?

A: He has made every player on the team better, not just him but everyone. The best thing he has brought to the table is excitement.

Q: Figure you’ve been asked before about your size. How have you been successful given your stature and what are your strengths that allow you to make plays at your size?

A: I don’t think like I’m 5-8. I feel like I’m 6-3 and can do everything just like those guys. My route running is what I worked on for these past two years and it’s working.

Q: You recently committed to Colorado. How has that changed your mindset to have that decision out of the way?

A: I’m only worried about Desoto right now and winning that state championship.

Q: What are your goals for the next level?

A: My goal is to be the best wide receiver in the nation and be an All-American.
